Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Tuesday, November 4, 1997
Mattie B. Jones, 96, Eldon, died Sunday at Eldon Healthcare Center. She
was born Sept. 18, 1901, in Olean, the daughter of Willis M. and Martha
Bowlin Burris.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Eldon. She worked at the
Eldon Transfer Storage Company and was a postal clerk for 25 years prior
to her retirement in 1966.
Survivors include: one son, Dr. Lloyd Jones, Independence, Kan.; one
sister, Tamar Hunter, Jefferson City; and one grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. Randall Bunch will officiate. The remains were cremated.
Private burial will be in Eldon City Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to
first Baptist Church of Eldon.

Carl D. Bond, 81, Russellville, died Sunday at his home. He was born
Dec. 13, 1915, in Olean, a son of Eugene and Maude Sadie Miller Bond.
He was married Dec. 11, 1935, in Jefferson City, to Gladys Scott, who
survives at the home.
He attended Bond School in Miller County. He retired from the
Department of Corrections in 1968. He was a farmer. He was a member of
Spring Garden Baptist Church and the Black Angus Association.
Other survivors include: three daughters, Rita Casten, Russellville;
Shirely Looten, Henley; and Betty Ward, Russellville; one brother,
Miller Bond, Garland, Texas; two sisters, Mary Fiene, Jefferson City,
and Venita Enowski, Eldon; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
One daughter, Deloris Weber, died in 1991.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Weber and Sons Funeral Home,
Russellville. The Rev. Farrie L. Cole will officiate. Burial will be
in Enloe Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Weber and
Sons Funeral Home, Russellville. Memorials are suggested to Camp
Wonderland, Rocky Mount, or Hospice of Jefferson City.

Nell Ruth Melton, 76, Eldon, died Sunday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Southwest. She was born April 13, 1921, at Shell City, a
daughter of the Rev. Henry W. and Edith Armstrong Allee. She was
married April 1, 1941, in Kansas City, to Leland Melton, who survives at
the home.
She was a doctor’s office manager in Eldon for many years. She was a
member of First Baptist Church of Eldon, where she was director of the
Sunday school department and a former assistant pianist. She was a
member of the Sorosis Club.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Barbara Tartar, Springfield,
and Mary Kay Ziegler, Merriam, Kan.; six grandchildren, and two
great-grandchildren. Her stepmother, Blanch Allee, preceded her in
death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Eldon.
The Rev. Randall Bunch and the Rev. Greg Bunn will officiate. Burial
will be in Eldon City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m.
Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. Memorials are suggested to

Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Tuesday, September 16, 1997
Eula Steen, 84, Eldon, died Sunday at St. Marys Health Center. She was
born Sept. 26, 1912, in Brumley, a daughter of James I. and Mary
Margaret “Molly” Meredith Popplewell. She was married April 17, 1932,
in Brumley, to Waldo A. Steen, who died April 6, 1995.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Eldon, where she taught the
T.T.T. Sunday school class for 23 years. She moved to Eldon from Iberia
in 1972, and was a seamstress.
Other survivors include: two sons, Sherril Steen, Mt. Laurel, N.J., and
James Steen Eldon; five daughters, Carol Eselman, Barnett, Janet Steen,
San Antonio, Texas, Alice Tyler, College Park, Md., Marilyn Whitaker,
Iberia, and Eula Maye Bond, California; two brothers, Curtis Popplewell
and Tennyson Popplewell, both of Independence; 22 grandchildren and 43
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Roger Steen, in 1951, and by one
daughter, Geraldine Atwell, in 1995.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church. The Rev.
Randall Bunch will officiate. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m.
Thursday at Hickory Point Cemetery, Iberia. Visitation will be from
5-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. Memorials are
suggested to First Baptist Church.

Howard Eugene “Gene” Bond, 70, Linn Creek, died Monday at his home. He
was born April 8, 1925, in High Point, a son of Oscar and Mary Denny
Bond. He was married to Evelyn Fay Buster, who died April 4, 1978. He
was married Jan 3, 1986, in Melbourne, Fla., to Deloris Darst Garrett,
who survives at the home.
He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He was employed
as a corrections officer with the Missouri Department of Corrections for
30 years until his retirement.
He attended Harper Chapel Methodist Church, Osage Beach. He was a
member of the Elks Lodge, Osage Beach, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 2442, Eldon, and was a member and past president of the Eldon
Saddle Club. He was a member of the Foxtrotters Association, and was
Missouri/Arkansas champion in 1968-1969.
Other survivors include: two sons, Ronald Bond, Melbourne, and Marvin
Bond, Eldon; two stepsons, Tim Garrett, St. Charles, and Todd Garrett,
Eldon; two stepdaughters, Judy Garrett, Eddyville, Ky., and Dana
Garrett, Lake City, Iowa; two brothers, Jack Bond, Kearney, Kan., and
Bill Bond, Hemet, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. Cellis Crum will officiate. Burial will be in Greenridge Cemetery,
Olean. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today.

Eula J. Goff, 87, Iberia, died Monday at Eldon Family Helath Center.
She was born Oct. 20, 1907, in Iberia, a daughter of Gordon and Sarah
Madden Groves. She was married March 1, 1951, in Reno, Nev., to Clayton
S. Goff, who died Oct 17, 1981. She was a member of Iberia First
Baptist Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Gerald Bort, South Gate, Calif., and
Donald Bort, Newman, Calif.; three grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated. Interment will be in Skylawn Memorial Park in
San Mateo, Calif. at a later date.

Grace Templeton Cotton, 71, Porter, Texas, formerly of Eldon, died
Monday in Porter. She was born Feb. 28, 1926, in Miller County, a
daughter of Arthur and Alice Keeney Templeton. She was married Aug. 12,
1939, in Eldon, to John Edward Cotton, who died in 1963.
Survivors include: one daughter, Margaret Gampher, Porter; one son,
Edward Cotton, Eldon; four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Union Cemetery, Rocky
Mount. The Rev. Gene Cain will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-8
p.m. Friday at Griswold-Kays Funeral Home, Eldon.

Betty J. Hickey, 57, Eldon, died Friday at her home. She was born Nov.
27, 1939, in Grinnell, Iowa, a daughter of William E. Reynolds and
Nellie Karr. She was married March 4, 1961, in Miller County to Mitchel
D. Hickey, who survives at the home.
A 1957 graduate of Eldon High School, she had been a salesperson with
Orscheln Farm and Home Supply since 1989. She previously worked for
International Shoe Co. in Eldon and in Jefferson City and for Kel-Am in
Eldon. She was a member of Aurora Springs Baptist Church, where she
taught Sunday school for several years.
Other survivors include: one son, Ryan Hickey, of the home; two
daughters, Dianne M. Jackson, Coral Springs, Fla., and Lisa R. Homan,
Eldon; one brother, Bill Reynolds, Mountain View; one sister, Shirley
Scrivner, Olean; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Aurora Springs Baptist Church.
The Rev. Ernie Buscher will officiate. Burial will be in High Point
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral

Harley Craig, 81, Osage Beach, died Thursday at Lake of the Ozarks
General Hospital, Osage Beach. He was born July 15, 1916, in
Etterville, a son of Ben and Mary Rebecca Stark Craig. He was married
Jan. 8, 1940, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Ruth Zelpha Long, who survives at
the home.
An Army veteran of World War II, he owned and operated the Fountain
Motel in Eldon from 1950-1960. He owned and operated the Missouri
Aquarium from 1958-1979. He was a member of First Baptist Church,
Eldon.
He was past master of the Ionia Lodge 381 AF & AM. He was a member of
the Royal Arch Masonic Lodge, Jefferson City. He was a noble in the Abu
Ben Adhem Temple, Springfield, and was past patron of the Eastern Star,
Eldon. He was a former member of the Eldon Chamber of Commerce board.
He was on the board of the Lake of the Ozarks Association, and was on
the board of the Missouri Motel and Hotel Association. He lived most of
his life in the Lake area.
Other survivors include: one son, Michael B. Craig, Osage Beach; two
sisters, “Beavean” George, Chatsworth, Calif., and Helen Quig,
Sacramento, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. Randall Bunch will officiate. Burial will be in Dooley
Cemetery, Eldon. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today, with a Masonic

Mabel Lena Winters, 85, Eldon, died Friday at Osage Beach Health Care
Center, Osage Beach. She was born May 30, 1912, in Freedom, a daughter
of James Wright and Malinda Matthews. She was married Dec. 8, 1928, in
Jefferson City to Clarence E. Winters, who died Sept. 15, 1966. She was
a homemaker and a lifelong resident of the Eldon area.
Survivors include: three sons, James Winters, Jefferson City, Loren
Winters, Eldon, and Bobby Wood, Holts Summit; two daughters, Christina
Winters, Tuscumbia, and Faye Bopp, Eldon; 19 grandchildren and 31
great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. Tom Mustain will officiate. Burial will be in Eugene Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. today. Memorials are suggested to

Herschel A. Amos, 72, Enon, died Monday at the Good Shepherd Care
Center, Versailles. He was born May 10, 1925, in Enon, a son of Rado
and Orpha Dawson Scott Amos. He was married in 1944 at Sherman Texas,
to Mildred Shikles, who died Dec. 13, 1984.
He was an Army veteran of World War II. A lifelong resident of Enon, he
was a livestock farmer. He retired as a supervisor with the Cole County
Public Works Department, where he worked for more than 20 years.
He was a member of American Legion Post 5; VFW Post 2442 Eldon; the
Fraternal Order of the Eagles; and the Enon Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son, Duane Amos, Russellville; one brother,
Dorsey Amos, Jefferson City; one sister, Ruby Shikles, Eldon; and two
grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Enon Baptist Church. The
Rev. Guy Thomas and the Rev. Randy Trumbo will officiate. Burial, with
military honors, will be in Enloe Cemetery, near Russellville.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Scrivner-Morrow Funeral
Home, Russellville. Memorials are suggested to the Lee House, Eldon;

Walter F. Vaughan, 46, of Overland, formerly of Maries County, died
Thursday at the St. Louis County Hospital. Mr. Vaughan was born August
15, 1924, in Maries County, the son of Rainey and Florence Conner
Vaughan. He was married on July 22, 1944, at Dixon to Beatrice Renfrow,
who survives.
He had been employed as a machinist for the Wagner Electric Co. since he
moved to St. Louis in 1946. He was a World War II veteran, and a member
of the Overland Christian Church.
Other survivors include: two sons, Michael Vaughan, Berkeley, and
Patrick Vaughan, Overland; his parents, of Meta; three brothers, Wayne
Vaughan, Iberia, Wesley Vaughan, O’Fallon, and Kenneth Vaughan,
Jefferson City; and one sister, Mrs. Faye Branson, Bland.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today, at the Stevinson
Funeral Chapel, Iberia with the Rev. John Boaz officiating. Burial will
be in the Lawson Cemetery, Maries County.

Wanda Lee Diedriech, 70, Eldon, died Friday at Osage Beach Health Care
Center. She was born Jan. 28, 1927, in Brumley, a daughter of Oliver F.
and Marie Hutsler Wall. Her mother survives in Brumley. She was
married Nov. 11, 1951, at Lake Ozark, to Clarence Diedriech, who
survives at the home.
She was director of Helping Hand Day Care Center in St. Louis for 20
years, prior to retirement. She moved back to the Lake area in 1990.
She was a member of Lake Ozark Christian Church.
Other survivors include: one son, Daniel C. Diedriech, Holts Summit;
one daughter, Linda L. Lay, St. Louis; one sister, Thelma Meredith,
Iberia; three brothers, Clark Wall, Iberia, Nyle Wall, Stoutland, and
Larry Wall, Brumley; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lake Ozark Christian Church. The
Rev. Stanley Duncan will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore
Memorial Gardens, Barnett. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at
the church. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Thomas Lee Patterson, 31, Eldon, died Monday at his home. He was born
July 21, 1966, in Jefferson City, a son of Warren and Lois Jeffries
Patterson. His father survives in Tuscumbia. He was married Sept. 24,
1988, in Lake Ozark, to Lesa Wood, who survives at the home.
He was a member of Highway 54 Church of Christ in Eldon. He lived most
of his life in the Tuscumbia and Ulman area, spending the last eight
years in Eldon. He was a production line worker.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Patterson, of the
home; one son, Kenton Thomas Patterson of the home; two sisters, Bobby
Jo Patterson, Iberia, and Misty Patterson, Tuscumbia; and one brother,
Andy Patterson, Tuscumbia.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Highway 54 Church of Christ.
Doug Hawkins will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Union Cemetery,

Mrs. Fannye Marie Denny, 64, Eldon, died Friday at Charles E. Still
Hospital (Jefferson City). She was born May 4, 1907, at Barnett, the
daughter of John and Albertine Smith Imler. On Dec. 9, 1928, she
married Samuel Ernest Denny in Eldon. He survives.
Mrs. Denny was a member of the First Christian Church and the Rebecca
Lodge, both in Eldon.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Wilson, Eldon, and
Mrs. Marolyn Nichols, Lebanon; a son, Dr. E. N. Denny, Cameron; two
brothers Layte Imler, Jefferson City, and Howard Imler, Eldon; and six
grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Eldon.

Center. He was born Dec. 23, 1909, in Miller County, a son of John and
Stella Pendleton Hicks. He was married Sept. 5, 1959, in St. Anthony,
to Regina E. Schulte, who died Feb 9, 1984.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Iberia Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 6167, and St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony.
Survivors include one sister, Emma Ponder, Iberia.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church.
The Rev. Clarence Wiederholt will officiate. Burial, with military
honors, will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8
p.m. Friday at ST. Anthony parish hall with a Christian wake service at

Hazel J. Forrest, 91, Eldon, died Friday at Lake of the Ozarks General
Hospital, Osage Beach. She was born Feb. 7, 1904, in Dade County, the
daughter of William and Josephine Wilkinson. She was married June 29,
1947, in Lake Ozark to Randolph B. Forrest, who died Aug 14, 1970.
She was a graduate of Golden City Public Schools, and Southwest Missouri
State University. She was a teacher at schools in Barton County, Golden
City, Quapaw, Okla., and School of the Osage, where she retired in 1970.
She was a member of the Miller County Retired Teachers Association, the
Missouri State Teachers Association, the Osage Teachers Association and
AAUW. She was a charter member of Lake Ozark Christian Church and
current member of First Christian Church of Eldon.
Survivors include: two sisters, Wilma John, Eldon, and Lois Laughlin,
Collinsville, Ill.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. David E. Grousnick will officiate. Burial will be at Greenmore
Memorial Gardens, Barnett. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today.

Dorothy Mae Skaggs, 86, Iberia, died Saturday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Memorial Campus. She was born June 3, 1909, in Crocker, a
daughter of Cordo and Lula McMillan Crews. She was married March 30,
1931, in St. Louis, to Walter Freeman Skaggs, who died Nov. 2, 1978.
She taught school, and worked as a seamstress at Ft. Leonard Wood and
L.B. Manufacturing, Iberia, for 16 years. She was a member of Iberia
Congregational Christian Church and Eastern Star Lodge 537, Iberia.
Survivors include: One daughter, Helen Colvin, Iberia; four brothers,
Lee Crews, Crestwood, Stanley Crews, St. Louis, Ransom Crews, Plato, and
John Crews, Koshkonong; two sisters, Patsy Braiser, Plato, and Fern
Gann, St. Louis; two grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The
Rev. Jack McCann and Dr. Ellis Livingston will officiate. Burial will
be in Union Cemetery, near Iberia. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m.

Dessie A. Sestak, 98, Russellville, died Monday at Eldon Health Care
Center. She was born Feb. 24, 1897, in Marys Home, a daughter of
Cornelius and Mary Eva Morgan Honiker. She was married May 30, 1915, in
Eugene, to James Sestak, who died Nov. 5, 1985.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Dover Place Christian Church,
St. Louis, and a past member of the Russellville Order of the Eastern
Star.
Survivors include: one son, Bert Sestak, Russellville; two daughters,
Virginia Spencer, Northglenn, Colo., and Fern Winkler, Russellville; 16
grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Two infant daughters preceded
her in death, and one son, Joseph Sestak, died Feb 25, 1992.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Weber and Sons Funeral Home,
Russellville. The Rev David Grausnick will officiate. Burial will be
in Enloe Cemetery, Russellville. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m.

Vurden O. Rook, 78, Iberia, died Wednesday at Waynesville Nursing
Center. He was born Sept 4, 1916, in Miller County, a son of Alvia and
Fannie Flaugher Rook. He was married June 1, 1946, in Iberia, to Zella
G. Tallman, who died Aug 17, 1988.
He received a master’s degree in education from the University of
Missouri in 1957. He taught school in Madden, Honey Springs, Barton and
Brown. He retired in 1971 as an elementary principal in Linn.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he received the Distinguished
Service Medal. He is survived by nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia.
Burial will be in Iberia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m.
Friday. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Jewel A. Long, 85, Iberia, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Care Center.
She was born Sept. 13, 1909, in Tuscumbia, a daughter of John and Macie
Fancher Burks. She was married to Walter Zehender. She later was
married in 1951 in Kansas City, to Woodrow L. Long, who died Nov. 19,
1976. She was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church near Tuscumbia.
Survivors include: one daughter, Alberta Johns, Richland; two sisters,
Fern Huddleston, LaMonte, and Virginia Wilson, Iberia; seven
grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and nine
great-great-grandchildren.

of Larkin and Helen Huene Deadmond. His mother survives in St. Louis.
He was married Dec. 18, 1964, in Iberia to Veronica Faye Helm, who
survives at the home.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Army until his
retirement in 1985. He was employed as a driver trainer at Greenfield
Trucking Co., Ft. Dodge, Iowa, from 1986 to 1990. He worked for J.H.
Ware Trucking, Fulton, from 1990 to 1991, and was a truck driver for
Creech Brothers Trucking, Troy, since 1991. He was a member of St.
Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony.
Other survivors include: two sons, Ronald E. Deadmond Jr., Leasburg,
and Floyd C. Deadmond, Missouri; two daughters, Tammy Jo Deadmond,
Iberia, and Barbara Jean Deadmond, St. Louis; one brother, Robert E.
Deadmond, Fenton; and grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Community Hospital. He was born Jan 23, 1927, in Iberia, a son of
Rector and Lola Andrews Pemberton. His mother, Lola McDonald survives
in Richland.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a truck driver. He lived in
Chicago for many years where he owned a Standard Oil service station
before retiring. He was a life member of the Royal Moose Heart Lodge in
Chicago.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he owned and operated a garage in
Marys Home from 1946 to 1963. He was employed as a carpenter from 1963
until his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Knights of
Columbus 3267, both in Marys Home, and Carpenters Local 945, Jefferson
City.

He farmed in the Hallsville area and retired as a security guard from
the University of Missouri in 1980. He worked at Vista Marketing in

A resident of Eldon for the past seven years, she was employed as
manager of Mattingly’s, Fulton, until her retirement. She was a member
of Ninth Street Christian Church, Eldon.

Kathleen Tompkins, 91, Eldon, died Friday at her home. She was born
Feb. 20, 1904, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Homer and Nancy Owens
Riley. She was married Feb. 17, 1928, in Parsons, Kan., to Harry
Tompkins, who died Jan 23, 1975.
She and her husband owned and operated Tompkins Chevrolet & Oldsmobile
in Eldon for many years. She was a member of First Christian Church,
Eldon, and a 50-year member of Chapter CH, PEO. She was a former member
of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Shelton and Marjorie Vernon, both
of Eldon, and eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. One son,
Claude Richard Tompkins, preceded her in death.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The

He served in the Navy from 1931 to 1957, including ship duty during
World War II. He was employed for 19 years by Bausch & Lomb Inc., as an
optical technician. He was a member of the Madonna del Sasso Catholic
Church, Salinas, Calif.

and Clinics, Columbia. He was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Koeltztown, a son

Apple Creek, to Nora A. Ruch, who survives of the home.
He worked for Mack Electric in St. Louis for 27 years, retiring in 1978.
He mobbed back to St. Elizabeth in 1979. He was a member of Teamsters
Local 682 in St. Louis, St. Joseph’s Sodality and St. Lawrence Catholic
Church in St. Elizabeth.

He was born April 17, 1902, in Bonner Springs, Kan., a son of George P.

Thelma E. Rains, who died March 6, 1984.
He moved as a child from Kansas to a farm north of Eldon, where he lived
for 90 years. He owned and operated three feed and produce stores for
18 years. He also farmed. He was a member of the Methodist Church.

Nursing Home, Tuscumbia. He was born March 2, 1917, in Brumley, a son

Shreveport, La., to Margaret J. Smith, who died Sept. 23, 1987.
He was educated in the Brumley public school. He was an Army Air Corps
veteran of World War II and remained with the U.S. Air Force for 23
years before retiring. He later worked as a maintenance man around the
Lake of the Ozarks.
Survivors include: two sons, Ronnie Robinett and Duwayne Robinett, both
of Kansas City; three daughters, Linda, Wanda and Elaine; four brothers,

Home, Tuscumbia. He was born April 17, 1913, in Miller County, a son of

in Ulman, to Rayma Buruley, who died July 1, 1994.
He had lived in Iberia and worked for the MFA Exchange. He moved to
Granite City, Ill., where he was a firefighter with the Granite City
Fire Department until he retired in 1958. He then moved to Eldon. He
was a member of the Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Alfred Livingston, Oquawka, Ill.; one
brother, John William Livingston, Westphalia; and three grandchildren.

Ruth Jean Fleer, 75, Eldon, died Sunday at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center,
Columbia. She was born April 19, 1920, in Lamar, a daughter of Guy M.
and Bertha Jeanette Burton Keyes. She was married May 16, 1944, in
Columbia, to Melvin Fleer who survives.
A resident of the Lake area since 1962, she worked as an office manager
in real estate. She was active in school activities, and was an
honorary life member and past local and state office-holder in the PTA.
She was a 50-year member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, holding the Order
of the Rose. She was active in the Ha Ha Tonka Society.
She was a member of the Niangua Chapter DAR, and was a senior leader,
local and state officeholder in Children of the American Revolution.
She was a 1994 graduate of Columbia College Lake Campus. She attended
Ulman Baptist Church and was a member of Eldon United Methodist Church,
and past member of Union Methodist Church, St. Louis.
Other survivors include: three daughters, Theresa Fleer Godat, Ft.
Wayne, Ind., Marti Fleer Farthing, Atlanta, and Mary Melissa Fleer
McDowell, Brumley; one son, Mark Fred Fleer, Ft. Wayne; one sister,
Kathleen Keyes Karlowski, Wichita, Kan.; one brother, Tom B. Keyes,
Cincinnati; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ulman Baptist Church. The Rev.
Mark Kessler will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial

Rosa Luetta Rowden, 61, Iberia, died Tuesday at her home. She was born
Nov. 12, 1933, in Miller County, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Jane
Duncan Dake. Her parents survive in Iberia. She was married Dec. 31,
1951, in Harrison, Ark., to Carl Glen Rowden, who died April 23, 1988.
She was a homemaker and a member of Faith Tabernacle Church, near
Iberia.
Survivors include: two sons, Rick Rowden, Meta, and Kerry Rowden,
Iberia; three daughters, Diana Neal, Meta, Glenda Roark, Jefferson City,
and Carla Maylee, Iberia; five brothers, Myrel Dake, Robert Dake and

Thressa Lourane Bond, 85, Versailles, died Saturday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Memorial Campus. She was born Dec. 14, 1909, in Miller
County, a daughter of Columbus G. and Fanny Sconce Buchanan. She was
married Aug. 30, 1930, in Kansas City, to Lloyd Malcolm “Boots” Bond,
who died May 19, 1985.
A resident of Versailles for most of her life, she worked at Tweedie War
Plant during World War II, and served as a sabotage investigator. She
was employed by Kansas City Bifocal Co. and the Fashion Shop, both in
Versailles.
She was a member of Versailles United Methodist Church, a life member of
Morgan County Historical Society, and a 50-year member of the Women’s
Civic Club. A member of the Versailles Senior Citizens and Senior
Citizens Senate, she was a charter member of the Alzheimers support
group at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Versailles, and served as a nursing
home ombudsman. She is survived by nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home,
Versailles. The Rev. Steve Burbee will officiate. Burial will be in
Versailles Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. today.

James J. Ahart, 73, Eldon, died Sunday at his home. He was born Nov.
10, 1921, in Miller County, a son of William N. and Ida M. Barnhart
Ahart. He was married May 20, 1972, in Eldon, to Josephine Stickney,
who survives at the home.
A lifelong resident of Miller County, he was employed as a machinist by
Chesebrough-Ponds, Inc. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Other survivors include: two sons, Ronald Ahart and LeRoy Ahart, both
of Eldon; two daughters, Linda Salem, Independence, Kan., and Brenda
Ash, Summerville, S.C.; one stepson, Ronnie Carroll, Bloomington,

Willa S. Kure, 89, Eldon, died Tuesday at her home. She was born March
25, 1906, in Eldon, a daughter of Frank and Ethel Crane Shoemaker. She
was married April 27, 1935, in Kansas City, to Leo N. Kure, who died
March 28, 1993.
A graduate of Eldon High School and Felt and Tarrant Comptometer School,
Kansas City, she attended Justas Business College. She co-owned and
operated Kure Distributing Co., Eldon for 40 years.
She was a member of Eldon United Methodist Church, and a 45-year member
of the 50-50 Class. She was a member of the 5th District Sorosis Club,
the Miller County Historical Society and a 20-year member of Ozark
Twirlers Square Dance Group. Survivors include one sister, Frances S.
Cockrell, Eldon.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The

Versailles, to Clara E. Admire, who died Aug. 12, 1990.
He lived in Eldon for 60 years. He worked for the city of Eldon as a
water technician. He was a member of the 9th Street Christian Church,
and IOOF Lodge 462 and Rebecca Lodge 324.

home. She was born April 16, 1904, in Holytown, Scotland, a daughter of
John and Mary Ann Harper Forster. She was married April 28, 1926, in
Wellburg, W. Va., to Ernest E. Keeling, who died Oct. 20, 1962.
She was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Hooverson Heights
Church of Christ, Fallansbee, W. Va., and served as treasurer. A
resident of Etterville since 1962, she was a member of Etterville
Christian Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Robert E. Keeling, Mannington, W. Va., and
James T. Keeling, Yuma, Ariz.; one daughter, Mary Ann Boyuk, Etterville;
21 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald Keeling and John Keeling,
and two daughters, Jeanne Thompson and Dorothy McGowan.

Center. He was born Oct. 9, 1905, in Tuscumbia, the son of Eugene and

Kan., to Maudie Martin, who died Dec. 16, 1983.
He lived in Kansas City, Kan., for 45 years, the state of California for
five years, and Overland Park, Kan., for seven years, moving to Eldon in
1977. He worked as a building contractor.
Survivors include two sisters, Grace Buchanan, Sedalia, and Lyn Beck,
Atlanta. One daughter, Doris Jean Alexander, died Feb. 11, 1993.

Center. He was born Oct. 23, 1913, in Eldon, a son of Joe R. and Mary

County, Ark., to Irene Jarret, who died May 28, 1988.
He lived in Miller County all his life. He attended the Christian and
Nazarene churches. He worked for two years in the CCC Camps during the
1930s. He was employed for several years at Glazer Brothers Pants
Factory in Eldon.
He is survived by one daughter, Maxine Carrender, Eldon. Two sons
preceded him in death.

married June 22, 1975, in Manchester, to Louis Strothkamp, who died
April 14, 1977.
She was a member of Brays Advent Christian Church, Iberia. She worked
as a nurse’s aid at Ft. Leonard Wood Hospital, and in a nursing home.
She had also worked in a Dixon clothing store.
Survivors include: one son, Wilbur Warman, Dixon; one step-daughter,
Mildred Hoehne, Florissant; three brothers, Clark Jones, Iberia, Raymond
Jones, Edwardsville, Ill., and Vernon Jones, Rolla; eight grandchildren,
five step-grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and nine
step-great-grandchildren. One son, Kenneth Warman, preceded her in
death in May 1986.

Coleman Ira Wilson, 77, Topeka, Kan., formerly of Eldon, died Friday at
Colmery-O’Neil Veterans Administration Medical Center, Topeka. He was
born April 8, 1917, in Eldon, the son of Edgar and Mary Beard Wilson.
He was married to Ina Fay Buchanan. He was married Oct. 10, 1937, in
Eldon, to Janie Howser, who died Feb. 28, 1978. He was married to
Pauline E. Prigmore, who survives at the home.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, and lived in western Kansas
before moving to Topeka in 1956. He owned and operated Wilson Brothers
Trucking and was an operating engineer for Local 101, Topeka.
Other survivors include: one son, John E. Wilson, Grantville, Kan.; two
brothers, Hershel Wilson, Wichita, Kan., and Truman Wilson, Topeka; two
sisters, Margie Graff, Barnett, and Ruby Haggerman, Eldon; three

Dec 24, 1959.

Ind., a daughter of Jonas and Lydia Lockhart Burns. Shewas married April 16,
1927, in Flint, Mich., to Ernest Uhlmann, who preceded her in death.
She helped operate Gambles Hardware Store, Ava, then retired in 1970 and moved
to Springfield. She was a longtime member of the Ava United Methodist Church
and the Amite Club of Ava. She was active in King's Way United Methodist Women,
Springfield.
Survivors include: one son, Jerry Uhlmann, Jefferson City; two daughters,
Mildrend Hawkins and Doris Smith, both of Springfield; one sister, Louise

Emmett Shikles, 84, Eldon, died Friday at his home. He was born Oct.
18, 1910, in Enon, the son of William Shikles and Sally Enloe. He was
married Dec. 21, 1929, in Tuscumbia, to Lelia Irene McDowell, who died
March 5, 1991.
He was employed as a milk tester for Kraft Foods for 33 years. He was
employed with Benson Lumber Co., Eldon, and with Eldon City Cemetery for
10 years as groundskeeper. He was a lifetime resident of the Eldon
community, and a member of the Oak Street Church of Christ, Eldon.
Survivors include: two daughters, Bonnie Reed, Springfield, and Serena
Uber, Eldon; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

Rufus Bunch, 83, Eldon, died Thursday at Lake of the Ozarks General
Hospital, Osage Beach. He was born March 7, 1912, in Armstrong, the son
of Sterling P. and Carrie Kirby Bunch. He was married May 18, 1935, in
Fayette, to Neda R. Hammons, who survives at the home.
He was owner and operator of a retail convenience store in Paris, Mo.,
for 30 years. He retired in 1978 and moved to Rocky Mount. He was a
member of the Baptist Church.
Other survivors include: one son, Glenn E. Bunch, Kansas City; one
daughter, Donna K. Sharkey, Charlotte, N.C.; one sister, Thelma Wells,
Slater; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Armstrong Baptist Church,
Armstrong. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Armstrong.

Warren C. Ash, 74, Brumley, died Saturday at Ellis Fischel Cancer
Center, Columbia. He was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Brumley, a son of Jacob
and Lola Phillips Ash. He was married Feb. 22, 1942, to Dessie D. Moss,
who died Oct. 30 1978. He was married June 4, 1982, in Miller County,
to Faye P. Rowell, who survives at the home.
A lifelong resident of Miller County, he was employed as a school Bus
driver by the Brumley School District and School of the Osage for 34
years until his retirement. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was
a member of Kaiser Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6514 and the Rodden
Church of Christ, near Brumley.
Other survivors include: two sons, Bobby Moss, Iberia, and Jackie Ash,
Brumley; two daughters, Sharon Jeffries and Evelyn Williams, both of
Brumley; three stepdaughters, Marian Hess and Myrna Luttrell, both of
Olathe, Kansas, and Mona Elam, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three brothers, Tom
Ash, Webb Ash and Curtis Ash, all of Brumley; 12 grandchildren, four
step grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. One daughter, Debbie
Ash, died in 1955.

Center. She was born Nov. 16, 1902, in California, a daughter of H.A.

H. Bodamer, who died March 6, 1981.
A resident of Olean for most of her life, she had lived in Liberty since
1987. She was a homemaker and a member of Eldon United Methodist
Church.

She was a homemaker and a longtime resident of Eldon. She moved to
Jefferson City in 1987. She was a member of First Christian Church in
Eldon.

was born May 16, 1901, in Miller County, the daughter of James and Alpha

Reed, who died May 15, 1979.
She attended China Country School, Miller County, Tuscumbia High School,
and Eldon High School. She owned and operated Reeds Store with her
husband and son until 1984. She was a member of First Christian Church,
California, Jobe-Elliott American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 17, and
Barnett and California Order of Eastern Star No. 521. She also worked
with the Girl Scouts, Red Cross, and Lioness Club.
Survivors include: one son, James A. Reed, California; two daughters,
Lyle R. Koch, Columbia, and Alice R. Beckmeyer, Nashville; and eight
grandchildren.

in Eldon the past 13 years. During World War II, he worked for Wagner
Electric Company in St. Louis. Survivors include 12 nieces and nephews.

preceded him in death.
He was a farmer and moved to Tuscumbia from Centralia in 1962. He

Tuscumbia, to Mable Ramsey, who survives at the home.
He was employed as an aircraft assembler in Baltimore during World War
II. A resident of Tuscumbia for 16 years, he was a farmer until 1962
when he moved to Edwardsville. He worked as a Pinkerton guard in St.
Louis for four years, and was employed at American Steel for 14 years.
He was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church, Tuscumbia.

clerk at The Purple Shoppe, and did volunteer work for the Salvation
Army.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars

Henry L. Ault, 84, Eldon, died Saturday at Eldon Healthcare Center. He
was born June 5, 1910, in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Thomas O. and Hyla
L. Dearinger Ault. He was married March 1, 1946, in Rock Island, Ill.,
to Dorothy M. Mier, who died Jan 11, 1972.
He was an antenna installer and repairman with Osage TV & Appliance
before he retired. He was a former operator of the Aulden Propane Gas
Co., Eldon. He was a member of Ninth Street Christian Church, Eldon.
Survivors include one daughter, Gayla Dwyer, Eldon; one son, Dencil
Ault, Eldon; one brother, George Ault, Washaugal, Wash.; two sisters,
Lovenna Thomas and Virginia Powell, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and 10
grandchildren. One daughter, Saundra Hahn, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
Minister Donald E. Renken will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore
Memorial Gardens, Barnett. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today.

Opal Crouch, 68, Eldon, died Sunday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Still Campus. She was born May 12, 1926, in Miller County, the
daughter of James W. and Emma Frances Rush. She was married June 16,
1943, in Eugene, to James M. Crouch, who died April 2, 1968.
She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Miller County. She was a
former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Eldon VFW Post 2442 and a
member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors include: four sons, Harold Crouch, Tuscumbia, John Crouch,
Larry Crouch and Kenneth Crouch, all of Olean; six daughters, Roberta
Thorson, Republic, Patricia Duncan, High Point, Patsy Buchanan,
Bloomington, Ill., Becky Bertz, Lexington, Dianna Fitzpatrick, Olean,
and Darlene Crouch, Columbia; four sisters, Elizabeth Bittle, Eldon,
Arcinia Phillips, Kansas City, Goldie Wood, Marion, Kan., and Louise
Jeffries, Camdenton; 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. Jay Quinn will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery, Eldon. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today. Memorials are

Bert Dewayne Clark, 71, Dixon, died Wednesday at Phelps County Regional
Medical Center, Rolla. He was born Jan 11, 1924, near Iberia, a son of
John and Lottie Green Clark. He was married Feb. 12, 1942, in
Waynesville, to Hazel Mae Murray. He was married Nov. 25, 1978, in
Hartville, to Geraldine Margaret Zimmerman, who died Dec. 14, 1991.
He worked at Brown Shoe Company, Dixon for more than 20 years, retiring
in 1984. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Church
of Christ, Dixon.
Survivors include: two sons, John Clark, Elberton, Ga., and Gary Clark,
Dripping Springs, Texas; one daughter, Connie Gould, Willard; two
sisters, Lola Tharp, Salem, and Geneva Shelton, LaPort, Iowa; nine
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren.
One daughter, Donna Fay Clark, died in1949. One son, Billy Dewayne
Clark, also preceded him in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home, Dixon. Bro.
Doug Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery. Visitation will be
from 5-8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Raymond Lee Wallis, 80, Eldon, died Saturday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Memorial Campus. He was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Kaiser, a son of
Arthur B. and Settie Jeffries Wallis. He was married Jan. 29, 1936, in
Lebanon, to Freida Bernice Wallace, who survives at the home.
He was a lifelong resident of Miller, Camden and Morgan counties. A
carpenter in the lake area for many years, he was a member of the Ninth
Street Christian Church, Eldon.
Survivors include: four sons, Jerry Wallis, Ottawa, Kan., George
Wallis, Faucett, Larry Wallis, Rocky Mount, and Curt Wallis, Eldon;
three daughters, Phyllis Wallis and Connie Henley, both of Lake Ozark,
and Debbie Smith, Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Carl Wallis,
Chillicothe, and Dean Wallis, Baldwin, Kan.; three sisters, Flossie
Forles, Eldon, Roma Wilson, Tuscumbia, and Evelyn Binkley, Eugene; 22
grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Nellie M. Hartman, 87, Jefferson City, died Monday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Memorial Campus. She was born Dec. 31, 1907, in Miller
County, a daughter of Lee and Vina Blankenship Howser. She was married
Feb 26, 1927, to Jake Hartman, who died April 11, 1982.
A lifelong resident of Central Missouri, she was a homemaker. She was a
member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Haulenbeek, Jefferson City, seven
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Two sons, John R. Hartman Sr.
and Kenneth L. Hartman Sr., preceded her in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. J.W.
Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

Patricia J. Michelson, 62, Jefferson City, died Friday at St. Marys
Health Center. She was born Aug. 17, 1932, in Miller County, the
daughter of James and Lelia “Chloe” Dawson Dickson.
A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, she attended school in
Iberia and graduated from Jefferson City High School. She was employed
by the State of Missouri for more than 40 years, serving as an
administrative assistant with Sen. Richard Webster for 25 years and then
with Sen. Marvin Singleton. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of
the Eagles, Aerie 2693.
Survivors include: one son, Michael Michelson, Jefferson City; one
sister, Helen Trees, Jefferson City; one brother, James Dickson,
Jefferson City; and two grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Freeman Mortuary. The Rev. E. Gene
Rooney will officiate. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday. Memorials are suggested to the

Nathan M. Calhoon, 85, Eldon, died Thursday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Still Campus. He was born March 26, 1909, in Midland, S.D., the
son of Frank and Mary Fostina Moore Calhoon. He was married Sept. 24,
1936, in California to Olivia Cleo Hite, who survives at the home.
He was a graduate of Midland, S.D. public schools. He was employed with
Cierra DePasco Copper Corp., in Peru for seven years. He was a mining
shift boss with The Homestake Gold Mine, Lead, S.D., and a furniture
dealer in Bellville, Kan., before moving to Eldon in 1951. He owned and
operated Calhoon Furnture from 1951 until his retirement in 1973.
He served one term as mayor of Eldon. He served on the Planning &
Zoning Board several years and served as chairman of the Eldon Park
Board for five years. He was a charter member of the Eldon Gun Club and
charter and past member of Miller County Historical Society’s board of
directors. He was a 50 year member of Lions Club and a charter member
of Volunteers for Youth Development. He was a member of Roof of the
World Lodge 1094 AF&AM, Laoroya, Peru. He served as Boy Scouts
treasurer and on the scouting board of directors. He held the scout
rank of Silver Beaver.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Audra May Gier, Kansas City,
and Barbara Jame Stephens, Macon, Ga.; one son, Frank H. Calhoon,
Chilhowee; three sisters, Evelyn Carroll, Greenwood, Miss., Eunice
Underwood, Silver Springs Md., and Virginia Ruth Gerritsen, San
Francisco; and two grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Eldon. The Rev. David
Grousnick will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City Cemetery. Visitation will

Josephine A. Herx, 77, St. Anthony, died Saturday at Boone Hospital
Center, Columbia. She was born Feb. 24, 1918, in Miller County, a
daughter of Henry and Veronica Otto Buechter. She was married Oct. 6,
1936, in St. Anthony, to Lawrence P. Herx, who died Sept 26, 1986.
She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony. She
worked for many years at L.B. Manufacturing in Iberia until her
retirement in 1975.
Survivors include: four sons, Ralph Herx, Jerry Herx and Larry Herx,
all of St. Anhthony, and Tom Herx, Eldon; four daughters, Gernevieve
Voss, Patricia Voss and Mary Herx, all of St. Anthony, and Louise
Hagenhoff, Russellville; one brother, John Buechter, Brinktown; two
sisters, Cecillia Luebbert and Bonita Kleffner, both of Brinktown; 21
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. One son, Donald Herx, died
March 22, 1992.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. The
Rev. Clarence Wiederholt will officiate. Burial will be in the St.

John R. Wiley, 77, Ulman, died Monday at his home. He was born June 27,
1917, in Belgrade, a son of Robert and Mae Moser Wiley. He was married
Nov. 1, 1958, in Camdenton, to Ethel G. Wyrick, who survives of the
home.
He moved to Ulman in 1979 from Lafayette, Ind., after retiring from the
Anheuser-Busch Brewery. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

brothers, Tim Wiley, Bismarck, and Russel Wiley, Desloge; four sisters,

Oliver Dean Carrender, 76, Henley, died Wednesday at his home. He was
born Feb. 28, 1918, in Miller County, a son of James and Lydia Jukes
Carrender. He was married Jan. 26, 1949, in Spartansburg, S.C., to
Dorothy Gates who died March 20, 1988.
He farmed for many years in Henley, and was employed as a custodian with
the Missouri Highway Department until he retired in 1982. He was a Navy
veteran, retiring in 1954 as a chief petty officer after 13 years of
service. He was a member of the United States Naval Fleet Reserve,
Eldon VFW Post 2442, and Disabled American Veterans, Oliver-Buehrle
Chapter 17, Jefferson City.
Survivors include: three sons, James Carrender, Houston, Allen
Carrender, Henley, and Jerry Carrender, Russellville; one daughter,
Marsha Brunk, Henley; five brothers, Gilbert Carrender, Manhattan, Kan.,

was married Jan. 17, 1926, in Bagnell, to Walter L. Prewitt Sr., who
survives at the home.
A lifelong resident of Miller County, she was a homemaker. She was
employed for 16 years as a postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church, Osage Beach, and the
community social club.

Walter L. Prewitt Sr., 89, Lake Ozark, died Thursday at Miller County
Nursing Home, Tuscumbia. He was born Jan. 14, 1906, in Linn Creek, a
son of William A. and Olive Rosalie Patterson Prewitt. Hew was married
Jan 17, 1926, in Bagnell, to Reva Glea Lupardus, who died Feb. 4, 1995.
He worked as a construction supervisor during the construction of
Bagnell Dam, early Lake roads, Ft. Leonard Wood and Camp Crowder. He
was a postal carrier in the Lake Ozark area for 16 years, and co-owned
and operated a general store at Prewitt’s Corner, Osage Beach.
Survivors include: two daughters, Helen L. Vernon, Eldon, and Maxine
Costello, Lake Ozark; one son, Walter L. Prewitt Jr., Lake Ozark; five
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

veteran, he worked as a carpenter until his retirement.

Eugene J. “Gene” Benedict, 69, Eldon, died Tuesday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Memorial Campus. He was born Nov. 13, 1925, in
Springfield, a son of George and Mary Slovinski Benedict. He was
married Feb. 14, 1955, in Springfield, to Wanda Renken, who survives at
the home.
He was employed as a switchman with Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for
32 years until his retirement. He then operated a wholesale bait and
catfish farm near Eldon.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Telephone
Pioneers and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eldon.
Other survivors include: one son, John Benedict, Lebanon; two
daughters, Jeanie Benedict-Yates, Kansas City, and Geri Benedict-Lowery,
Aurora, Colo.; and one brother, George Benedict, Amory, Miss.

born June 30, 1912, in Wichita, Kan., a daughter of George E. and Audra
Nell McClure Hite. She was married April 19, 1930, at Olathe, Kan, to
Hugh R. “June” Wright, who died in 1947. She was married June 15, 1959,
in Las Vegas, to Durwood W. Price, who died Sept. 29, 1979.
An accountant, she was associated with Wright-Price Accounting and Tax
Service in Camdenton for a number of years. She was a member of the
First Christian Church of Eldon and the Niangua Chapter, Daughters of
the American Revolution.
Survivors include: one son, Britton Wright, Winter Park, Fla.; one
sister, Cleo Calhoon, Eldon; two stepsons, D.L. Price, Camdenton, and
George Price, Des Moines, Iowa; and two grandchildren.

Martha T. Rehagen, 87, St. Anthony, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Care
Center. She was born May 17, 1907, in St. Anthony, a daughter of
William and Anna Lueckenotto Herx. She was married Feb. 9, 1926, in St.
Anthony, to Joseph H. Rehagen, who died March 5, 1982.
A resident of St. Anthony since 1977, she was a resident of Jefferson
City for 35 years. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St.
Anthony.
Survivors include: one son, Dan Rehagen, Warsaw; three daughters, Anna
Marie Brand, Warsaw, Rosemary Little, Satsuma, Fla., and LaVerne
Reinkemeyer, Lee’s Summit; two brothers, August Herx, St. Elizabeth, and
Alvis Herx, Raytown; three sisters, Hedwig Holtmeyer and Pauline
Doerhoff, both of St. Elizabeth, and Marie Gudeman, Tuscumbia; 17
grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Three sons, Joseph H. Rehagen Jr., William Rehagen and Robert Rehagen,
preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church.
The Rev. Clarence Wiederholt will officiate. Burial will be in St.
Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at St.
Anthony Parish Hall, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m.

Mary M. Reed, 66, Eldon, died Friday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Still Campus. She was born March 17, 1928, in St. Elizabeth, the
daughter of Ilda and Dora Bear Wickham. She was married July 6, 1946,
in Jefferson City, to Harry C. Reed, who survives at the home.
She was a homemaker, and along with her husband, co-owned Reedville
Subdivision on Highway Y near Eldon. She was a lifetime resident of
Miller County, and a member of Aurora Springs Baptist Church.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Helen Rising, Eldon, and Susan
Brune, Bonnots Mill; three sons, Junior Reed, Yorktown, Va., and Robert
Reed and Michael Reed, both of Eldon; two brothers, Alton Wickham and
Wayne Wickham, both of Eldon; one sister, Alfreda Medley, Columbus, Ga.;
and 12 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. Ernie Buscher and the Rev Randall Bunch will officiate. Burial
will be in Eldon City Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. today.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Eldon
Community Center.

Lillian B. McDowell, 87, Kaiser, died Thursday at Miller County Nursing
Home, Tuscumbia. She was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Tuscumbia, the daughter
of Thomas E. and Pearl Vernon Lake. She was married Aug 16, 1928, in
Kansas City, to Charley McDowell, who died Aug 31, 1985.
She was the oldest member of Riverview Baptist Church, Osage Beach, and
was a member of the Social Circle Club, Kaiser.
Survivors include: two sons, Charles Mancel McDowell, Kaiser, and
Michael Earl McDowell; one daughter, Desta Bernice McDowell, Alexandria,
Va.; three brothers, Clarence “Curly” Lake, Leonard “Bill” Lake and
Lawrence Lake, all of Carrollton; four sisters, Martha Tompkins and
Dorothy Watsky, both of Carrollton, Faye Morrison, Jefferson City, and
Ruby Riecke, Lincoln; and one granddaughter.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverview Baptist Church. The Rev.
Michael Parris will officiate. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery near
Kaiser. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at Hedges Funeral Home, Osage

Martha G. Meisel, 85, Jefferson City, died Sunday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Still Campus. She was born Dec 4, 1909, in St.
Elizabeth, a daughter of Herman and Sophia Hollenbeck Gerling. She was
married April 12, 1937, in Jefferson City to Emil J. Meisel, who died
Feb 15, 1982.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jefferson
City; the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Meta; and the St. Ann’s
Sodality in Meta. She worked at Oberman Manufacturing and International
Shoe Company in Jefferson City; at Iberia Manufacturing; at Champion
Canvas Company in Meta; and Meta Uniform, where she retired in 1975.
She had lived in Jefferson City since 1984.
Survivors include: two sons, Harold Meisel, Jefferson City, and Herman
Meisel, Blue Springs; two daughters, Dolores Litsch and Louise Branson,
both of Holts Summit; four sisters, Regina Sanning and Anna Sanning,
both of Jefferson City, Christine Allison, Florida, and Elizabeth Crall,
Eugene; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

Lucille Crider, 72, Eldon, died Saturday at St. Marys Health Center
(Jefferson City). She was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Wallsburg, Kan., a
daughter of Leroy and Clara Peterson Smithart. She was married in 1948,
in Junction City, Kan., to Elmer Crider, who died in 1984.
She was employed as an LPN at St. Marys Hospital, Manhattan, Kan., until
her retirement. A resident of Eldon since 1984, she was a member of the
Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Manhattan.
Survivors include: two daughters, Linda Ahart and Lynn Hagerman, both
of Eldon; one sister, Maurine Hughey, Eldon; four grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. George O. Flora will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City

James A. Hendley, 83, Eldon, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Care Center.
He was born April 15, 1909, in Kentucky, the son of Sanford and Gemima
Strong Hendley. He was married Feb. 6, 1933, to C. Eleanor Fancher, who
died July 25, 1980. He was married March 2, 1981, to Mona Flaugher
Setser, who survives at the home.
He farmed in the Iberia Community until 1958, then was employed as a
corrections officer with the Missouri Department of Corrections from
1958-1962. He served as warden of St. Louis County Corrections Facility
from 1962-1970, the moved to Iberia where he was associated with Hendley
Farm Supply. He moved to Eldon in 1982, where he was a member of First
Church of the Nazarene. He also was a member of American Association of
Retired Persons.
Other survivors include: one son, Ralph E. Hendley, Iberia; one
daughter, Catherine A. Hull, Swartz Creek, Mich.; two step-sons, Chester
W. Setser, Eldon, and Kenneth L. Setser, Versailles, Ky.; one
step-daughter, Lorene Whittington, Granite City, Ill.; three brothers,
Ezra Hendley, Vicksburg, Mich., Aaron Hendley, Bernie and Dees Hendley,
Pontiac, Mich.; five sisters, Mary Minor, Rogers, Ark., Martha Burdett,
Hemet, Calif., Esther Reed, Warsaw, Harriett Prock, Eugene, and Wilma
Ingram, Portsmouth, Va.; and eight grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Raymond L. Mathews, 79, Olean, died Monday at his home. He was born
Jan. 13, 1916, in Cherryville, N.M., a son of Abner N.F. and Ethel
Leeming Mathews. He was married May 25, 1941, in Tuscumbia, to Fern
Marie Denton, who survives at the home.
A resident of Olean since 1994, he was employed as a mechanic with
Greyhound Coach Lines, St. Louis, for 33 years until his retirement.
He was an outdoorsman and fisherman.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Sandra Litchfield, Mission,
Kan.; one brother, Roy E. Mathews, Sulphur Springs, Ark.; one sister,
Rowena Pezeley, Columbus, Ohio; and one grandson.

Tolivar H. Franklin, 73, Eldon, died Saturday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Memorial Campus. He was born June 12, 1921, in Olean, a son of
William T. and Faye Augusta Thompson Franklin.
After high school, he worked for the Kraft Cheese factory, Eldon. He
attended business college in Sedalia, and graduated from Central
Missouri State University, Warrensburg, with a bachelor’s degree.
He was employed by Citizens Bank of Eldon for more than 30 years until
his retirement as a senior vice-president. A U.S. Army veteran of World
War II, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2442 and the
I.O.O.F., both in Eldon. He was a member of Oak Street Church of
Christ, Eldon.
Survivors include: three brothers, William C. Franklin, Stover, James
L. Franklin, Eldon, and Dan Franklin, Smithville; and two sisters,
Carrie Marie Johns, Hamlet, N.C., and Wanda Fay Franklin, Marshall.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. Jasper Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant

William Doran Jennings, 78, Fulton, died Friday at Callaway Community
Hospital. He was born June 12, 1916, in Elk Park, N.C., the son of John
M. and Cora Ivalee Moody Jennings. He was married Sept 18, 1945, in
Tuscumbia, to Dorothy Lucille Dees, who survives at the home.
He attended Readsville School, and was a World War II veteran. He was a
member of Bethel Methodist Church, Readsville.

Henry P. Lepper, 71, Marys Home, died Tuesday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Still Campus. He was born Nov. 15, 1923, a son of Frank H. and
Rosa J. Lueckenhoff Lepper. He was married Jan 29, 1946, in Eldon, to
Betty L. Berendzen, who survives of the home.
He served in the Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart.
He retired from the Missouri Department of Corrections as a canteen
manager in 1988. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic
Church; Eldon VFW Post 2442; Disabled American Veterans of Jefferson
City; and the Knights of Columbus in Marys Home.
Other survivors include: five sons, David Lepper, Daniel Lepper, James
Lepper and John Lepper, all of Eugene, and Mark Lepper, Jefferson City;
five brothers, Al Lepper, Olean, Jake Lepper and William Lepper, both of

Raymond Lerory Green Sr., 59, Fulton, died Sunday at his home. He was
born Nov. 18, 1935, in Tuscumbia, the son of Raymond E. and Ann Cain
Green. His mother, Ann Cain Jackson, survives in Fulton. He was
married Dec. 18, 1965, in Fulton, to Rose M. Hall, who survives of the
home.
He worked as an electrician for the Fulton State Hospital for 13 years.

Hospital, Osage Beach. She was born Aug 2, 1933, in Chicago, a daughter
of Louis and Mary Brainwine Schroeder. She was married Dec. 23, 1952,
in Chicago, to Albert F. May, who survives of the home.
She moved to Iberia 16 years ago. She worked at Phase V Beauty Salon in
Osage Beach and was a member of the Christian Womens Club in Osage
Beach.

Thomas May, Jefferson City; one daughter, Jayne Anthony, Iberia; one

Frankie Wilson, 91, Iberia, died Friday at her son’s home near Iberia.
She was born Oct. 15, 1903, in Brays, the daughter of William and
Abagill Humphrey Dake. She was married Aug 8, 1920, to Leonard Wilson,
who died May 29, 1963.
She worked for the Fort Leonard Wood Hospital and PX, and at L.B.
Manufacturing, Iberia. She also worked with her husband on their farm
for many years. She was a member of Brays Advent Christian Church near
Iberia, and the Freemont Watkins American Legion Auxiliary Post 105,
Iberia.
Survivors include: five sons, Spurgeon Wilson, Leonard Wilson Jr.,
Bobby Wilson and Kenneth Wilson, all of Iberia, and George Wilson,
Manistique, Mich.; three daughters, Edna Humphrey and Margaret Cochran,
both of Iberia, and Ruby Mees, Chandler, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren, 33
great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. One son, Jewel
Wilson, died Aug 24, 1983.

A homemaker, she lived in St. Louis for five years. She was a member of
the First Christian Church, Eldon.

Monroe Buster, 77, Eldon, died Monday at the University of
Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics. He was born May 18, 1917, in
Eugene, the son of James E. and Aurie Leona Henley Buster. He was
married Oct. 8, 1938, in Jefferson City to Ardis Ethel Connell, who
survives of the home.
An Army veteran of World War II, he farmed in the Eugene area most of
his life, moving to Eldon 18 years ago. He was employed with Interco in
Jefferson City for 24 years. He was a member of Aurora Springs Baptist
Church, where he was a deacon.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Sharon Gray, Eugene, and Patsy
Jobe, Brazito; two sisters, Brooxe Kallenbach, Tuscumbia, and Marcella
Matthews, Independence; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He worked as a switchboard operator for Union Electric for 33 years, and
was a member of First Christian Church, Eldon.

Thomas E. Brown, 92, Eldon, died Wednesday at Eldon Family Health
Center. He was born Feb. 22, 1902, in Johnsonville, Okla., a son of Joe
and Emma Bryant Brown. He was married March 10, 1938, in Yuma, Ariz.,
to Grace Ellen Moneymaker, who died July 3, 1992.
He owned and operated Crocker Auction Barn, Brown Furniture Store and
Brown’s Trading Post, all in Crocker, and Dixon Auction Barn, Dixon.
Survivors include: three step-sons, Hadley Lee Strutton, Project City,
Calif., Kenneth Strutton, state of Rhode Island, and Morley Lester
Strutton, Leesville, La.; 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and
nine great-great-grandchildren. One son, J. B. Brown, and three
stepsons, John Edward Strutton, Cecil Struton and Hershel Strutton,
preceded him in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday
at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. Brother Duncan Skiles will officiate.
Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, near Iberia. Visitation will
be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday.

Patricia Sue Woodside, 57, Jefferson City, a former Eldon resident, died
Thursday at Capital Region Medical Center-Still Campus. She was born
July 19, 1937, at Hubbell, Neb., a daughter of Howard and Margaret Evers
Icenogle. Her mother, Margaret Howser, survives in California. She was
married June 12, 1955, to Kenneth D. Woodside, who died June 19, 1989.
She was a homemaker. She lived in Eldon from 1970-1992, when she moved
to Jefferson City.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Vicki Melton, Eldon; one
brother, Jerry Icenogle, Bear, Del.; four sisters, Janet Weibel,
Jefferson City, Joyce Baird, Norwood, Minn., Sharilyn Koch, Ovid, Mich.,
and Beth Ball, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one granddaughter and two
step-grandsons.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon,
with the Rev. Donald E. Renken officiating. Burial will be in the Eldon
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday.

Clarke “Big Dad” Payne, 75, Eldon, died Thursday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Memorial Campus. He was born Dec. 15, 1919, in Brumley,
a son of Noah and Alice Wall Payne. He was married April 9, 1941, in
Eldon to Pauline Hinds, who survives at the home.
He was a 1938 graduate of Eldon High School, and attended Drury College
in Springfield and the University of Chicago. He was a World War II
U.S. Navy veteran, and a carpet salesman. He was a member of the Eldon
Country Club, and founded the annual “Big Dad” Open New Years Day Golf
Tournament at the club. He was a member of the first Christian Church,
Eldon.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Kay Oliver, Redlands, Calif.,
and Tricia Drinkard, Jefferson City; one brother, Clay H. Payne,
Springfield; one sister, Lois Dean Brunsky, Clinton; three grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. David Grousnick will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today. Memorials are
suggested to First Christian Church, Eldon.

Benjamin F. Beeson, 73, Eldon, died Friday in Splendora, Texas. He was
born Sept. 2, 1921, in Warren County, Iowa, a son of Ival and Zola
Dodson Beeson. He was married Jan. 7, 1938, in Warren County to
Catherine Chamberlain, who died Aug 18, 1992.
A resident of Eldon since 1969, he was employed by the Rock Island
Railroad until his retirement as an engineer in 1982. He was a member
of Church of God International.
Survivors include: two sons, Merle Beeson, state of Iowa, and Marvin
Beeson, state of Illinois; one daughter, Cathy Gasaway, state of Texas;
one brother, Marvin Beeson, state of Iowa; one sister, Theresa
Paridiasoe, state of Connecticut; 12 grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Eldon City Cemetery.
James Ingle will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of
Griswold-Kays Funeral Home, Eldon.

Sam W. Robinett, 84, Eldon, died Sunday at his home. He was born July
8, 1910, in Tuscumbia, a son of Merrill and Stella Workman Robinett. He
was married March 7, 1935, in Eldon to Ellen Richardson, who died Dec.
17, 1986. He was married Aug. 3, 1987, in Eldon to Wilma Williams, who
survives in Eldon.
A lifelong resident of Miller County, he was employed for more than 40
years as a supervisor for Waite’s Turkey Hatchery, Eldon. He was a
member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Eldon.
Other survivors include: three stepdaughters, Wanda Wright and Judi
Harwood, both of Tuscumbia, and Mary Graves, Eldon; one stepson, John
Warren, San Clemente, Calif.; five brothers, Sherman Robinett and Ted
Robinett, both of Eldon, Gerald Robinett, Barnett, Basil Robinett,
Kaiser, and Milo Robinett, Green Forest, Ark.; six sisters, Nellie
Helton, Jefferson City, and Eula Gorg, Eunice Baucom, J. Pauline
Currence, Ruby Shepherd, and Sue DeGraffenreid, all of Eldon; 11
step-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren. An infant daughter
preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. Jasper Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in New Hope
Cemetery, Kaiser. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today.

Jessie H. Nixdorf, 86, Ulman, died Thursday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Memorial Campus. She was born Dec. 14, 1908, near Ulman, a
daughter of Carroll and Josephine Burks Nixdorf.
She taught junior high school at Tuscumbia for 12 years and at School of
the Osage for 17 years. She also taught at many rural schools and was a
member of Ulman Christian Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Louise Nixdorf, Ulman and Cleo Carnes,
Camdenton.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. Bro.
Larry Young will officiate. Burial will be in Nixdorf Pleasant Farm
Cemetery near Ulman. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Saturday.

Norris Lee Campbell Sr., 57, Iberia, died Monday at his home. He was
born Jan 30, 1937, at Dixon, a son of Edgar and Emmaline Pankey
Campbell. On April 9, 1966, he was married at Tuscumbia to Janette Kay
Humphrey, who survives of the home.
He had owned and operated Campbell Auto Sales near Iberia since 1987.
He was a member of Iberia First Baptist Church.
Other survivors include: a son, Norris Lee Campbell Jr., Iberia; a
daughter, Brenda Lee Duncan, Iberia; three other children by a previous
marriage; three brothers, Willis Dean Campbell, Salem, Dorsey Jay
Campbell, Ownesville, and William Clay Campbell, Benton, Ky.; four
sisters, Ruby Faye Koepke, Waynesville, Mary Sue McClain, Stanton, Sally
Marie Loughridge, Bland, and Joyce Kay Campbell, Evansville, Ind., and
five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Tabernacle Church near
Iberia. Brother Duncan Skiles will officiate. Burial will be in Union
Cemetery near Iberia. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at Rekus
Funeral Home, Iberia. Memorial contributions are suggested to the
charity of the donor’s choice.
