Obituary:
Mrs. Dorcas C. (Shelton) Ferguson was born in McMinn County, Tenn., June
11, 1884, came to Missouri with her parents when only eight years old.
Was married to John Ferguson June 4, 1862, died at her home in Iberia
January 18, 1920 at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 8 days. To this
union were born fourteen children, twelve of whom are living, two having
died in infancy and preceded her to the Glory Land.
She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church thirty years ago, during
which time she lived a consecrated Christian life, and when death came
it was only a good-by to her aged companion, children and earthly
friends and a happy awakening into a life of a new and a more perfect
day, with the Saints who have gone on before.
Her long, continued sickness did not destroy the charm of a kind
indulgent disposition, nor old age diminish her unselfish solicitude of
her friends and loved ones. "God touched her with His finger, and she
slept," the poet wrote. So may we say of this life--"God touched her
with His finger, and she slept," but not until a beautiful life was
lived, a noble example of patience, fidelity to truth and faith were
given. Not until visions of a heavenly life in Christ Jesus had cheered
and illuminated the valley of the shadow, and not that she sleeps,
memory tunes up the harp of life, and smiting the strings, finds that
its virtues melt into music. So it ever is, when a life is nobly and
divinely lived.
Rev. A.O. Laney conducted the funeral services at the M.E. Church
Tuesday morning in an impressive manner, in the presence of a large
gathering of sorrowing relatives and friends after which the remains
were taken to the family burying ground near Madden church where it was
peacefully laid to rest. Brief services were also conducted at the
grave by Rev. Laney.

Mrs. Mary Flaugher, widow of James Flaugher, and a resident of Tuscumbia
and community all her life, passed away at her home here at 8:15 O’clock
Monday night following only a few days’ illness. Mrs. Flaugher became
ill last Friday night and by Saturday afternoon her illness was so acute
that she did not recognize anyone. Her illness was thought to have been
intestinal flu.
She was born in Miller County April 14, 1865, and had she lived until
next April would have been 80 years of age.
At about the age of 23 she was united in marriage to James Flaugher and
to this union seven children were born, two of whom Mrs. Manley Renfrow,
who died in 1936, and Everett, who died in infancy, preceded her in
death. Her husband passed away July 28, 1930.
Surviving Mrs. Flaugher are five children, Mrs. Rector Wilson of the
Wilson School community, Willie Flaugher of Kansas City, Kansas, Mrs.
Alva Rook of Iberia, Elmer and Charlie Flaugher of Tuscumbia; 26
grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and a
great host of friends.
In early girlhood Mrs. Flaugher united with the Mt. Zion Church and
during the last several years had been a faithful attendant at the
Assembly of God Church at Tuscumbia. Mrs. Flaugher was very sincere in
her Christian belief and was a regular attendant at church services.
She rarely missed a service at the Assembly of God Church and even at
her advanced age walked the distance from her home to the church in
order to attend.
In spite of her advanced years Mrs. Flaugher had enjoyed very good
health and was very active in mind and body. She was a familiar figure
at Tuscumbia and will be missed by her loved ones and friends. She was
a good wife, mother and neighbor. She was a lover of flowers and made a
collection of seeds from the flower beds of neighbors to plant in flower
beds at her own home. The beautiful floral wreath presented by her
neighbors attested to the esteem in which “Aunt Mary” was held.

Wednesday afternoon of this week at 2 O’clock. Interment was in the

This community was shocked last Saturday night when the sad news came
that Mrs. Loran Adams had passed away. Mrs. Adams, the former Miss
Grethel Casey, gave birth to a daughter about ten months ago and since
that time her health condition grew from bad to worse. About two months
ago she submitted to a major operation at the Burge Hospital in

Saturday night. She is said to have been feeling as well as usual up to
within a short time of the attack when she took to vomiting. Her
condition immediately became alarming and Dr. Gould and the Adams &
Casey ambulance service were called from Iberia to rush her to St.
Mary'!
s Hospital in Jefferson City. She died enroute to the hospital before reaching
Tuscumbia.

Wednesday afternoon, at 2:00 O'clock, conducted principally by Dr. G.

Larry J. Parkhurst
News Article, Miller County Autogram Sentinel, July 9, 1992
Lake of the Ozarks Major Case Squad members were called together early
Monday following the fatal shooting of a rural Eldon man at his home at
about 2 a.m. Monday. Since that time, more than 100 leads have been
investigated by officers, Miller County Sheriff Alan Strope said.
Dead is Larry J. Parkhurst, 43, of Rte. 4, Eldon. He and his family
lived at the end of Route M near where County Road 17-10 M-20 crosses
Saline Creek.
Strope said Parkhurst died of a single gunshot wound to the head and
upper body. The gunman was outside the residence and fired at Parkhurst
through a window, the sheriff said. “We believe there was just one
shot,” the sheriff said. A 12-guage shotgun is believed to have been
used.
Miller County Coroner Doug Griswold said Parkhurst died instantly. Nine
pellets were removed from his body, including those that pierced his
right temple, Griswold said.
Preliminary autopsy results were given to Strope verbally on Tuesday
afternoon. Dr. Jay Dix of Columbia, a forensic pathologist, performed
the autopsy.
“The family was there,” Strope said. He said they were sleeping but
that Parkhurst was awake and in another part of the house when the
shooting occurred. None of them were injured.
Parkhurst and his wife Brenda have three sons. An older son, Sonny
James Parkhurst, and his wife and child, also live at the home. They
were awakened by the shot and found Parkhurst on the floor in the living
area of the house. The gun blast came through a living room window but
the kitchen, where Parkhurst fell, is visible from that window,
investigators said.
On Tuesday Missouri Water Patrol officers searched the Osage River for a
weapon but found nothing.
Gunpowder residue tests have been done on the hands of a number of
people, Strope said. Widespread reports that a 13-year-old boy was a
suspect are not true, the sheriff said. However, the youth was tested
for gunpowder residue, Strope said.
Strope said many rumors have surrounded the investigation and the number
of them may have clouded it. Those rumors were treated as leads and it
took officers time to investigate them, Strope said.
One of the rumors was that Parkhurst was to testify in a federal trial
this week. Federal agencies have told the sheriff that was not true.
Federal agencies have been involved to some extent with the probe, the
sheriff went on to say.
“We haven’t narrowed it down a whole lot,” the sheriff said Tuesday
afternoon, obviously tired and frustrated. “We’re still plodding
along.”
Many of the major case squad officers were sent back to their home
jurisdictions Tuesday as much of the leg work in the case was completed
after they worked late into the night on Monday.
In the fall of 1988 Parkhurst and his parents, James and Betty Parkhurst
of Eldon, were charged in Miller County with cultivating marijuana on a
farm in Miller and Morgan counties. That case has never gone to trial,
however, even though it remained open. A “les pendens” was attached to
the farm with the intent of seizing the farm if criminal charges were
proved.
At the time of his death, Parkhurst was a member of a country band.
Fire Station No. 2 at Grand Avenue and 10th Street was used as a command
center for the major case squad because none of the law enforcement
agencies in the county have offices large enough to handle the extra
officers.
Major case squad members include Miller, Morgan and Camden county
sheriff departments and police departments at Eldon, Lake Ozark, Osage
Beach, Camdenton, Versailles, Iberia, Stover and Laurie. Missouri State
Highway Patrol officers also assisted and the patrol provided lab
services for the investigation.
