An eight year old Eldon boy was fatally injured late Sunday night in
the collision of his father’s truck and a car near Fort Madison, Iowa.
Roger Alton Wickham, son of Alton Wickham, was thrown from the truck
upon the impact, the Iowa Highway Patrol at Fairfield, Iowa reported.
The accident occurred at 11:07 p.m. Sunday, six miles north of Fort
Madison on U.S. Hwy. 61. The Patrol reported Fort Madison is on the
Mississippi River in extreme southeastern Iowa.
The boy was pinned beneath the semi-trailer unit when it overturned.
The two occupants of the car were also killed the Patrol said. Wickham
was injured in the accident, and hospitalized at Fort Madison.
Wickham was transferred Tuesday to Charles E. Still Hospital in
Jefferson City, where he was reported in satisfactory condition. The
Patrol said Wickham and his son were northbound from Fort Madison
toward Burlington, Iowa in a semi-trailer unit loaded with turkeys.
The car, southbound, rounded a curve at a high rate of speed, swerved
into the truck’s lane of traffic, and collided head-on with the truck,
the Patrol said.
Wickham was driving a truck owned by Central Missouri Turkey Hatchery,
Inc., of Eldon. His destination was Burlington, about 13 miles north
of the accident scene. The car was driven by Miss Peggy Ann Smith, 15,
of Burlington, the Patrol said. Raymond Albert Monson, 17, of Mount
Pleasant, Iowa, the passenger, was owner of the car, the Patrol
reported.
The Patrol said the girl was not authorized to drive unless her
parents were with her as she had only a driver’s permit.
Roger A. Wickham was born April 12, 1955, to Alton and Gwendolyn Slote
Wickham. He was a third grade student at South Elementary School. His
mother died Sept. 13, 1962.

A 58-year-old Tuscumbia farmer was killed Sunday (Oct. 6, 1963) in a
tractor accident as he worked on his farm west of Tuscumbia. The body
of Aubrey W. Vaughan was found about 2 p.m. Monday after he failed to
report for work that morning at the Pryor Novelty Co. in Tuscumbia
where he was a machine operator.
Dr. L. Stanley Humphreys, Miller County coroner, said Vaughan’s chest
was crushed by the tractor. He estimated the accident occurred about
noon Sunday. It was believed that Vaughan was gathering firewood
Sunday morning. An empty wagon—which did not overturn—was hooked onto
the tractor. The tractor apparently overturned on a sharp incline.
Fred Pryor, an owner of the Pryor Company, and two employees—Morris
Patterson and Russell Burks—started searching for Vaughan after he
failed to report Monday. They were joined in the search by Bill Anson
and Ralph Wilkerson.
The men found Vaughn’s body about 200 feet from the overturned
tractor. Vaughan had apparently walked or crawled from the tractor and
had crossed a low fence, apparently trying to reach the home of Anson,
a neighbor. Vaughan’s wife, Mrs. Artie Vaughan, is employed at Lake
Ozark through the week and had not been at the farm since Sunday
morning, it was reported.
A native of the Tuscumbia area, Mr. Vaughan was born March 11, 1905,
to Wilson M. and Deska Lee Dobson Vaughan. He married the former Artie
Shackleford. He had been employed with Pryors 17 years.
Also surviving are two sons, James Aubrey Vaughan and Robert L.
Vaughan and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Louise Kelly, and Mrs. Lois Dean
Duncan, all of Kansas City, Kan. Three brothers, Oval Vaughan of
Eldon, Robert Vaughan of Tuscumbia, and Harold Vaughan of Versailles;
three sisters, Mrs. Goldia McDowell and Mrs. Dean Musick, both of
Tuscumbia, and Mrs. Pauline Hessefort of Warsaw; two half-brothers,
Theron Vaughan and Floyd Vaughan, both of Eldon; a half-sister, Mrs.
Tressie Boswell of Vinita, Okla., and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Flatwoods
Baptist Church, with the Rev. Everett Cotton officiating. Burial was

Ronnie Luttrell, 17-year-old resident of the Brumley community, drowned
Sunday (August 19, 1963) while swimming in the Glaize arm of the Lake
of the Ozarks. The accident occurred about 2 to 2:30 p.m., some 50
yards below the big swinging bridge southwest of Brumley, the State
Highway Patrol said.
The youth had gone in swimming with his brother, Terry and some other
boys, the Patrol said. Several feet from shore, he started going down.
Others at the scene made vain attempts to rescue the youth.
The body was recovered an estimated one and a half to two hours later
by Conservation Agent, Paul Plank of Eldon and State Trooper Ralph
Rider of Camdenton. Plank was in Lake Ozark when State Trooper Louis
Rohls, who investigated the drowning, stopped him and asked him to
accompany him to the scene to assist in recovery operations. The body
was recovered in an estimated 10 to 12 feet of water while he and Rider
were dragging with grappling hooks, Plank said. Ronnie reportedly could
swim, Rohls said.
The youth, son of Mrs. Zelphia Luttrell of Rte. 1, Brumley, and the
late Hamen Luttrell, had lived in the Brumley community all of his
life. His father passed away March 29, 1958. Ronnie was employed with a
fish hatchery at Brumley.

News Article/Obituary: Miller County Autogram-Sentinel, March 27, 1975
Tracy G. Luttrell, Jan. 30, 1963-March 14, 1975
Thursday morning, Marcy 13, fire struck the home of Mr. and Mrs. Okie
Luttrell living on the north edge of Ulman. The family had been away
until about midnight when they returned and completed some late chores.
They retired about 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning and at 2:00 they
discovered the house completely enveloped in flames. At this time no
one can be sure what happened. Several ideas have been advanced but the
fact of the matter is no one knows just how the fire started. But it
did consume rapidly.
Two daughters, Debbie age 17 and Dixie, age 16, were sleeping in the
south bedrooms. It is stated the son, Tracy age 12, was sleeping in a
sleeping bag on the living room floor. Mr. and Mrs. Okie Luttrell were
sleeping in the north bedroom. Mrs. Luttrell seemed to be the first to
become aware that the house was burning. Already she was badly burned.
Her husband and son appeared to be overcome with smoke and heat
inhalation. It is said she dragged them through double glass doors to
the outside. In the meantime the two girls were awakened by the
conflagration. One of them attempting to open the bedroom door into the
living room sustained bad burns on her hands. The mother rushed around
to the window outside of the girls’ rooms and with their help broke out
the glass through which the girls escaped further injuries.
Mrs. Luttrell so badly burned and bleeding from the burns finally
staggered barefoot through the snow and darkness to the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Herbert Nixdorf a quarter mile south down the road. Immediately
telephone calls were put through for help and ambulances called.
Some people who were at the wake of Rev. Mark Sooter at the Mt. Zion
Church beheld the flames and smoke and thought it might be their homes,
who rushed to discover what was happening. They immediately began to
round up quilts and blankets to protect the burned and night-clothes-
clad people. While awaiting help they sat on a curb around their drive-
way and when daylight dawned, the places where they sat was splattered
with blood. They had suffered terribly.
As quickly as the three Miller Co. ambulances could arrive, the family
members were rushed to hospitals. The two girls were treated at a
Jefferson City hospital and released. The parents and the 12 year old
boy were taken to the University Medical Center in Columbia.
Tracy succumbed to his burns the next morning, Friday, and his body was
transferred to the Stevinson Funeral Home in Iberia. Funeral services
for Tracy were held Monday afternoon, March 17, at 2:00 at the Ulman
Baptist Church with burial in the Hawkins Cemetery at Brumley.
As we get ready to go to press with this issue, we understand Mrs.
Luttrell is much improved but the condition of her husband remains
critical. A benefit show to raise money in behalf of the Luttrell
family’s needs, will be held this Friday night at the Iberia High
School There will be two hours of old-time country and modern country
songs and sounds.
