Edward Lee Maddux, age 42 of Springfield, Mo., died at 6:20 p.m. Sunday,
December 3, 2006, in his home. He was a Real Estate Broker with Century 21
Maddux Realty in Buffalo for 21 years. He was a member of the Buffalo
Rotary Club and was a GSBOR member since 1994 and with the M.L.S. He
served as Director and Secretary/Treasurer and on the Finance Committee in
2006. He served as a Director from 2002 until 2005. He was a past
president of the Ozark Board of Realtors, served as a State Director, and
held nearly every office at some time. Ed is survived by his mother and
stepfather, Wanda Maddux and Albert Brock of Buffalo; brother, John and
wife Brigitte Maddux of Buffalo; grandmother, Dorothy Tyler of Buffalo;
one nephew, Nathan Maddux; and four nieces, Ella, Mollie, Allie, and
Anthea Maddux. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, December 7, 2006,
at 2 p.m. in the First Christian Church. Burial will be in New Hope
Cemetery, under direction of the Montgomery -Viets Funeral Home.
Visitation will be Wednesday, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to
the New Hope Cemetery Fund.

Betty R. Boller, 75
HERMITAGE - Mrs. Betty R. Boller, Hermitage, a homemaker, died at 11:15 a.m.
Friday in her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home, Wheatland.
Cremation will follow services with private burial at a later date in Hermitage
Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

James J. "Jim" Allen, 75, Bolivar, died at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, March 7,
1999, in Cox Medical Center South, Springfield. He was born Oct. 12, 1923,
in Galloway, the son of Leonard and Virgie Ann Stewart Allen. Jim was
retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after serving from 1941 to 1971. He
served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Cuban Bay of Pigs. After
retiring from the military, Jim worked as a cook in Bolivar area
restaurants. He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church and of the Fleet
Reserve Association, Branch 316, Springfield. He was preceded in death by
his wife, Aleatha; his parents; four brothers and two sisters. He is
survived by one son, Randy Allen and his wife, Donna, Bolivar; one
daughter, Dawn Blake and her husband, Tim, Lebanon; one brother, Jack
Allen, Aldrich; and four sisters, Joann Cook, Ft. Worth, Texas, Beverly
Roberts and Pauline Woods, both of Springfield, and Bonnie Hackett,
Brighton. Also surviving are five grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) in
Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dave Barger officiating. Burial
will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Springfield. Casketbearers
will be Larry Collins, Dick Henderson, Bob Brown, Bob Julian, Troy Powers
and Joe Randel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berean Baptist
Church. Jim will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved him, but we
shall meet again where there will be no separation.

Dr. M. Michael Awad, 60, Bolivar, died at 1:25 p.m. Thursday, March 11,
1999, at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield. He was a
professor at Southwest Missouri State University for 18 years, chairman of
the math department and associate vice-president of academic affairs. For
the past six years he has been provost at Southwest Baptist University. He
was a member of Bolivar First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife,
Linda, of the home; two sons, Matthew Awad and his wife, Angie, of
Springfield and Luke Awad, Bolivar; four sisters, Hanny Bacheit, Nuha
Zreikboth and Alice Benjamin, all of Haifa, Israel, and Afaf Tourky of
Queensland, Australia; two brothers, Hanna Awad and Naji Awad, both of
Haifa, Israel; numerous nieces, nephews and many other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Sada Awad; a
brother, Elias; and a sister, Anissi. Services were Monday, March 15, at
University Heights Baptist Church, Springfield, with burial in Greenlawn
Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the M. Michael
Awad Scholarship Fund, Southwest Baptist University.

Lena "Mae" Batchelder, 74, Bolivar, died Friday, March 26, 1999, in
Weslaco, Texas. She was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Polk, the youngest daughter
of the late G.B. and Elsie Inglis. Mae was baptized at Mt. View Missionary
Baptist Church at Polk. She graduated from Goodson High School and retired
from Bendix in Kansas City after 19 1/2 years. Mae married the "love of
her life," Ray Batchelder, on April 22, 1959. Mae, who always put her
family first, is survived by her husband, Ray Batchelder, Bolivar; a son,
Johnny Emory and his wife, Linda, Olathe, Kan.; and a daughter, Lena Mae
Steele and her husband, Art, Independence. She passed on more love and
guidance to her four grandchildren, Brian, Jennifer, Sonya and Stephanie,
and one great-grandson, Connor. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother,
grandmoterh, sister, aunt and friend who will be sadly and greatly missed
by all whose lives she so dearly touched. Services will be at 10 a.m.
Thursday, April 1, in Pitts Chapel. Burial will follow in Payne Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the funeral home.

Mildred Vote Bigler, 77, Bolivar, died Monday, March 1, 1999, in her home
following a long illness. She was born April 12, 1921, in Ash Grove to
William R. and Maggie Mae Metcalf Long. She had accepted Christ as her
Savior at the age of 16. She was united in marriage to John William Vote
on Nov. 10, 1939, and to this union seven boys and one girl were born. He
preceded her in death in March 1971. On Aug. 28, 1976, she was married to
Ray Bigler, who also preceded her in death. This union added a stepson and
stepdaughter. She is survived by seven sons and daughters-in-law, John and
Bonnie Vote of Morrisville, Ronald and Sue Vote and Roger and Sharon Vote,
all of Bolivar, James and Loretta Vote of Judsonia, Ark., Richard and
Brenda Vote of Independence, Earl and Emma Vote of Greenbrier, Ark., and
David and Beverly Vote of Lebanon; a daughter, Mary Wytroval, Bolivar; a
stepson, Dale Bigler, state of Arkansas; a brother, Willis Long,
Springfield; a sister, Zue Westendorf, state of Michigan; 34 grandchildren
and 41 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her
two husbands, a stepdaughter, Thelma Wright, one brother, two
half-brothers and one half-sister. Services will be at 10 a.m. today
(Wednesday) in Pitts Chapel with the Rev. Scotty Burrell, a grandson,
officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Aldrich.
Pallbearers will be her seven sons and a grandson. Honorary pallbearers
will be grandsons John Joseph Vote, Michael Kurt Vote, Roger Vote Jr.,
Anthony Vote, Bryan Earl Vote and Brad Vote.

Don Buckley, 64, Bolivar, died Thursday morning, March 18, 1999, in St.
John's Regional Health Center after a battle with cancer. A lifelong
resident of Springfield, he drove a bus for the Springfield School Systems
for 10 years and recently retired from Dayco\Mark IV after 32 years, where
he served as tour guide coordinator for the last 10 years. He was preceded
in death by his parents, Ed and Novella Buckley; two brothers, Daniel
Edward Jr. and Ray Buckley; and a sister, Carolyn Lisenby. Survivors
include his wife of 43 years, Kay; a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and
Eric Jones; a son, Mark; three granddaughters, Heather and Cody Nave and
Kristyna Buckley; a brother, J.W. "Dub" Buckley; and a sister, Dorothy
Brumley, all from the Springfield area; a brother-in-law, Bob Lisenby;
four sisters-in-law, Phyllis Buckley of Springfield, Bernice Buckley of
Tulsa, Okla., and Sandy Lyles and Brenda McClelland, both of Kimberling
City; parents-in-law, Jack and Cathy Brotherton, Kimberling City; and many
nieces, nephews and friends. Graveside services were Sunday, March 21, in
Brookline Cemetery with James Batten officiating. Arrangements were under
the direction of Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home, Springfield. A memorial
service was held Saturday afternoon in the funeral home. Memorial

Horace Cecil Chittenden, 98, Springfield, formerly of the Schofield
community, died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, in Balanced Care
West, Springfield, following a lingering illness. He was born Jan. 29,
1901, in Iowa to Frank and Nora Chittenden. He was a retired farmer. He
was a former member of Schofield Missionary Baptist Church and a current
member of Freedom Missionary Baptist Church. He was united in marriage
with Fay Marie Clark, and to this union three children were born, Cecil,
Dean and Fern. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Cecil and
Ruth Chittenden of Springfield and Dean and Donna Chittenden of San
Antonio, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Fern and Charles Collins of
Springfield; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services
were Thursday, April 1, in Pitts Chapel with Bro. Junior Ingram and Bro.
Chester Viles officiating. Burial was in Schofield Cemetery. Music was
provided by the Schofield and Freedom Missionary Baptist Church choirs.
Pallbearers were Gene Grant, Ray Collins, Bille Sanders Owensby, Shelby
Jones, Bill Bennett and Jim Chittenden.

Mary Colvard, 85, Bolivar, formerly of Pleasant Hope, died Wednesday,
March 10, 1999, at Citizens Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 2, 1914,
in Ash Grove. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her 10 children and
their families, Henry and Elaine Colvard and their family, Cindy Colvard,
Ted and Julie Manuel, June Colvard, Joan and John Ford, Donna Colvard,
Donald and Shelly Colvard; Mack Jr. and Alice Colvard and their family,
Jerry and Serena Colvard and Vicki and Jerry Mau; Flora Gray and her

Oren Leon "Junior" Cowden, 60, Bolivar, died Monday, March 15, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Health Care Facility. The son of Oren Leon Sr. and Ruby
Esther Standley Cowden, he was born Aug. 3, 1938, in Polk County.
Survivors include his two sisters, Shirley McCormick of Bolivar and Debra
Barton of Fordland; his five brothers, Robert Cowden of Springfield,
Richard Cowden of Lee's Summit, Roger Cowden of Belton, Jimmie Cowden of
Flemington and Mike Cowden of Bolivar; also many nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at
10 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.
Harold Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge
Cemetery south of Aldrich.

Genivee Coy, 81, Lee's Summit, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Lee's
Summit Hospital. She was born Sept. 17, 1917, in Cedar County and lived in
Lee's Summit for more than 30 years. She was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Lee's Summit and had volunteered for the Red Cross for 30 years.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Elmer P. Coy, of the home; one
son and daughter-in-law, Dale E. and Judy Coy of Santa Fe, N.M.; two
grandchildren, James Robert Coy and Karen Hudson; and two
great-grandchildren, Gavin Coy and Mitchell Hudson. Services were
Saturday, April 3, at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee's Summit, with burial
following in Lee's Summit Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to
the First Baptist Church of Lee's Summit.

John Junior Crawford, 76, Cross Timbers, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999,
at Citizens Memorial Hospital. He was born May 26, 1922, at Fristoe, the
seventh child of John Anderson and Maud McClaren Crawford. He was united
in marriage to Marietta Burton on March 29, 1953, at Wheatland. Following
their marriage, they made their home on the family farm near Cross
Timbers. He was a well-known auctioneer in Hickory and surrounding
counties for more than 55 years. He was a member of the Cross Timbers
United Methodist Church and the Hermitage Masonic Lodge No. 288. He was
preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ralph; and three sisters,
Ola, Ula and Opal. Survivors include his wife, Marietta, of the home; two
sons, Ricky Lee Snider and his wife, Kathy, Excelsior Springs, and Sam
Crawford, Osceola; four daughters, Cheryl Foltz and her husband, Ben, of
Lebanon, Cindy Phillips of Warsaw, Janie Wooldridge and her husband, Gary,
of Fox River Grove, Ill., and Becky Taylor and her husband, Neal, of
Bolivar; and 11 grandchildren, Samantha Snider of Excelsior Springs, Chase
and Chance Crawford of Osceola, Jennifer and Jordan Foltz of Lebanon, Cody
and Jody Phillips of Warsaw, Caitlyn and Paige Wooldridge of Fox River
Grove, Ill., and Serena and Jared Taylor of Bolivar. Also surviving are
two brothers, Carl Crawford of Peculiar and Lloyd Crawford of Van Nuys,
Calif., and a sister, May Stover of Cross Timbers. Services were Sunday,
March 28, at the Cross Timbers United Methodist Church with the Rev.
Walter Admire and Wayne Doll officiating. Burial was in Cross Timbers
Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Reser Funeral Home,
Warsaw. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cross Timbers United
Methodist Church in care of the funeral home.

Margaret P. Davis, 80, Pittsburg, died Friday, March 12, 1999, in Citizens
Memorial Hospital following a short illness. A longtime resident of
Hickory and Polk counties, she was born June 14, 1918, in Brewster, Neb.,
to Wallace Ernest and Christina Peal Huwalkt Ahrens. She was united in
marriage to Joe R. Davis on Sept. 25, 1937, in Nebraska. To this union
were born three sons. She and her husband owned and operated a grocery
store and gas station in Pittsburg for many years. She was a member of
Antioch Christian Church. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law,
Emery and Paula Davis of Pittsburg and Wallace and Mabel Davis of
Wheatland; two grandchildren, JoAnne Thompson of Springfield and Joseph
Lloyd Davis of Pittsburg; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was
preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jerry Ray Davis in September
1969; her husband in October 1989; three brothers, Roy W. Ahrens, John L.
Ahrens and Ward W. Ahrens; and a sister, Ella M. McBride. Services were
Monday, March 15, in Pitts Chapel with the Rev. Donald Hart officiating.
Music was provided by Lyla Jenkins and Ruth Williams. Burial followed in
Greenwood Cemetery.

William C. "Bill" Derossett, 79, Kansas City, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999,
at his home. He was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Bolivar to Effie and Floyd
Derossett. He was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church and
American Legion Post No. 596. He worked for Unisys (formerly Sperry-Rand)
for 39 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers,
Robert and Eugene, who were killed while serving in the Pacific Theater
during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Derossett, of the
home; a daughter and son-law, Carolyn and Ed Jones, Kansas City; two
grandsons, Brian and Eric Jones, Kansas City; a granddaughter, Michelle
Glassinger, Kansas City; three brothers, Carl Derossett of Camarillo,
Calif., Jim Derossett of Albuquerque, N.M., and John Derossett of Little
Rock, Ark.; and two sisters, Betty Bushnell of Sequin, Texas, and Marjorie
Popejoy of Marshfield. Services were Friday, March 5, at Hinton-Gibson
Funeral Home, Raytown. Burial followed in Green Lawn Cemetery, Kansas
City.

Roy Lafayette Dillard, 94, Willard, died at 7:02 p.m. Saturday, March 20,
1999, at Cox Medical Center South from the effects of congestive heart
failure, pneumonia and leukemia. The oldest of eight children, he was the
son of Edmund Wesley and Minnie Leatitia Chrisman Dillard. He grew up in
the Ebenezer community and lived his entire life there except for a few
years in the Flemington-Weaubleau area and two years in Milwaukee, Wis.,
working for International Harvester. He worked for many years at Swift and
Co., Springfield. He and his wife, Ruby, owned and operated a store and
gas station on Mo. 13 near their home and later had a store at Ebenezer.
He was employed at Southwest Baptist College for a few years and also
worked as a carpenter, building houses in the Bolivar, Willard and
Springfield area. He was a member of the Robberson Prairie Baptist Church.
His first wife and the mother of his four children, Ruby Mabry Nunn
Dillard, died of cancer 39 years after their marriage. He then married Eva
Piper Dillard, who died of cancer four years later. His third wife of 28
years, Malinda Robertson Dillard, survives him. Besides his wife, he is
survived by three sons and their wives, Wayne and Wanda Dillard of
Brighton, Jim and Betty Dillard of Springfield and Dwight and Shirley
Dillard of Venice, Fla.; a daughter and her husband, Carol and Vernon
Keltner of Strafford; and seven grandchildren, Bruce Dillard and Phillip
Dillard and his wife, Kay, all of Brighton, James Keith Dillard and Brenda
Bolin and her husband, Mark, Springfield, Cindy Keltner of Strafford,
Michael Dillard with the U.S. Navy in Hawaii and Michelle Arciaga and her
husband, David, of Layton, Utah. Also surviving are 10
great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene Dillard of Springfield; two
sisters, Helen Robertson and Annalea York and her husband, Clyde, Spokane,
Wash.; three brothers-in-law, Glen Robertson, Jerry Robertson and his
wife, Pauline, Springfield, and Virgil Robertson and hiw wife, Myrtle,
Highlandville; 11 nieces, nine nephews and many friends. He was preceded
in death by a grandson, Kenneth Doyle Dillard, due to an automobile
accident three years ago. Services were Tuesday, March 23, at the
Robberson Prairie Baptist Church with the Rev. Joel Childers officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were his grandsons and
great-grandsons. Arrangements were under the direction of Klingner
Mortuary, Springfield.

Arthur Ezra Esther was born Feb. 17, 1948, in Columbia, Boone County, the
second of three children born to Calvin Dean Esther and Melba Lee
Schneider Esther. He passed away in Springfield on March 10, 1999, being
51 years and 21 days of age. Arthur graduated from Bolivar High School in
1966, going on to graduate from Central Missouri State University at
Warrensburg in 1971. He worked as a bank teller and an insurance salesman
and helped his dad with farming operations as long as his health
permitted. Arthur made friends easily and had a good sense of humor. He
had a fantastic memory and, being an avid sports fan, could quote plays
outstanding from long-ago games. He played baseball on an independent team
for a number of years. He enjoyed playing the piano. Arthur was saved at
an early age during a revival meeting at Lebanon and was baptized and
joined th Bolivar First Baptist Church. On. Nov. 20, 1980, he was married
to Buena Ann Merryboy. One daughter, Audrey, was born to this union. He
was preceded in death by his mother, Melba Lee Schneider Esther, in
February 1987. Survivors include his daughter, Audrey Esther, Springfield;
his father and stepmother, Dean and Harlene Esther, Bolivar; one sister,
Deanna Burns, Bolivar; one brother, Robert Esther, Springfield; a
stepsister, Roberta Doke, Brighton; one nephew, three nieces, and several
aunts, uncles and cousins. Arthur is at peace, free from illness and pain.
He will be missed by all. Graveside services were Friday, March 12, in
Lebanon Cemetery, Lebanon, with the Rev. Ray Leininger officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Butler Funeral Home. Memorial
contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Arthur Esther, 51, Springfield, formerly of Bolivar, died Tuesday, March
9, 1999, in his home after a brief illness. He was a laborer and a member
of the First Baptist Church, Bolivar. Survivors include his father and
step-mother, Dean and Harlene Esther, Bolivar; one daughter, Audrey
Esther, Springfield; one brother, Robert Esther, Springfield; and one
sister, Deanna Burns, Bolivar. Graveside services were Friday, March 12,
in Lebanon Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Leininger officiating. Arrangements
were under the direction of Butler Funeral Home. Memorial contributions
may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Harold James "Jim" Garretson, 54, Bolivar, passed away peacefully with his
family around him at 3:45 p.m Thursday, March 25, 1999, at St. John's
Regional Health Center after a couragous fight with cancer. He was born
Sept. 15, 1944, in Cliquot to Harold L. and Mary Lee Dunn Garretson. In
1961 Jim was united in marriage to Sharon Phillips. He attended Cliquot
and Mitchell elementary schools and graduated from Bolivar High School in
1962. He attended Southwest Baptist College and Southwest MIssouri State
College, graduating in 1968. Jim was a grain merchandiser. He started his
career with MFA and was among the youngest to trade grain on the floor of
the Kansas City Board of Trade. He also worked for Central Soya, Farmers
Export, Farmland and Central States Grain. He played baseball, football
and basketball through high school. He was on Bolivar High School's Class
M state championship basketball team. He continued with a lifelong
interest in sports. He coached youth soccer and baseball in Johnson
County, Kan. Jim and his brother coached an AAU basketball team that went
to the National Junior Olympic Tournament in South Bend, Ind. He was
preceded in death by his father, Harold L. Garretson, and his stepfather,
Virgil Engleman. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his mother, Mary Lee
Garretson Engleman; his three sons, Jim Garretson and his wife, Tammy,
John Garretson and Joe Garretson; a grandson Rob Garretson and his
fiancee, Stephanie Sneed; a granddaughter Tanya Garretson; a sister,
Millie McCain and her husband, Bob; Two brothers, Lyle "Buster Garretson
and his wife, Kay, and Fred "Bud" Garretson and his wife, Jenna; a
stepsister, Mary Ellen Chapman; a stepbrother, Wayne Engleman; his father-
and mother-in-law, Max and Lillie Phillips; a sister-in-law, Dorothy
Farmer and her husband, Claude; aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and
great-nieces and nephews whose antics he so enjoyed. He is also survived
by some very special people whom he thought of as his children and

Olive Lorene Gorden, 83, Springfield, formerly of Polk, died Thursday,
March 4, 1999, at Cox Medical Center South. She was born in Polk on August
24, 1915, to William and Effie Pope Payne. She was saved in August 1927 at
Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized and became a member of
Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church on Nov. 27, 1927, making her a
71-year member of that church. After moving to Springfield, she attended
True Hope Misisonary Baptist Church. She was united in marriage to Bernell
Gorden, who preceded her in death. To this union were born three children,
Wanda, Janice and Eddie. AFter raising her children and caring for her
ailing parents on their farm, she attended Draughn's Business College and
worked as a bookkeeper for MFA MIlling Company in Springfield until her
retirement. In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded
in death by her brothers, Noel and Russell Payne, and her sisters, Beulah
and Zella Payne and Alene Bridges. Survivors include her children, Wanda
Lorence and her husband, Rex, of Rogers, Ark.; Janice Pendergast and her
husband, Fred, of Cuppertino, Calif.; and Eddie Groden and his wife,
Glada, of Goodson. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Rick Lorence and
his wife, Kim, Brad Lorence and his wife, Tina, Tammy Lorence, Brian
Gorden and Jason Gorden; four great-grandchidlren; two sisters-in-law,
Clara Payne and Felicia Gorden; four brothers-in-law, Lyle Gorden, Okell
Gorden, Marlyn Gorden and Ray Ragsdale; and several nieces, nephews and
cousins. Lorene lived and portrayed the fruit of the spirit, which is
love, joy, peace, long-suffering (humility) and temperance (self-control).
Jesus says, "Seek peace." Lorene was consistently a true, godly peacemaker
to all. Services were Sunday, March 7, in Pitts Chapel with Bro. Paul
Cofer and Bro. Jerry Crain officiating. Music will be provided by the
Mountain View and Goodson Missionary Baptist Church choirs and the Parsons
family. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Leonard Harvey Hanson, 82, Humansville, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Hospital. The son of Julius and Ella Fisher Hanson, he
was born Nov. 26, 1916, at Wallingford, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army
during Word War II and was a retired salesman. He was married to Dorothy
Louise Lowe. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of the home; two sons,
Leonard Hanson, Humansville, and Ronald Hanson, Plattsburg; a brother,
Edward Hanson, Topeka, Kan.; a sister, Betty Greenwood, Humansville; six
grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The body has been donated to the
University of Missouri-Columbia Medial School. Arrangements were under the
direction of Murray Funeral Home, Humansville.

Carl Kinzie Hayden, 94, Bolivar, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at
Citizens Memorial Health Care Facility after a lingering illness. He was
born April 7, 1904, in Polk County, the son of William Dan and Cora
Reynolds Hayden. He and his wife lived for many years in Raytown, where he
was a retired automobile salesman. He was a member of the Evangel Temple
Assembly of God Church in Kansas City. He and his wife, Lela, moved to
Bolivar two years ago when their health began to fail. Surviving are his
wife, Lela P. Hayden, Bolivar; a sister, Alice Grant, Springfield; and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other relatives and friends.
Services were Monday, March 22, in Butler Funeral Home with Pastor John
Krans, the Rev. John R. Goss and the Rev. Stewart Robinson officiating.
Music was provided by Danny Hitchcock with Betty Cribbs as the pianist.
Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Casketbearers were Claude Satterfield,
Thomas M. Taylor, Frank Keith, Bobby Gene Seiner, Clifton Stepp and Mike
Cribbs. Honorary casketbearers were Robert Davidson, John R. Goss, Lee

Dollie Caroline Jarman, 93, Bolivar, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in
Parkview Health Care Facility. She was born June 5, 1905, near
Morrisville, one of eight children of John and Annie Zora Hickman Hurd.
She was raised in the Morrisville area where she attended the Hill String
School. In 1925 she married Ora Jarman and moved to Bolivar, where she
gave birth to 11 children, eight of whom survived. Three died in
childhood. She was baptised into the Baptist church in Morrisville. She
was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ora; three children,
four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Survivors include four sons,
Ora R. Jarman of Dunnegan, Willie Jarman of Kansas City, Ed Jarman and Oby
Jarman, both of Bolivar; four daughters, Cora Lee Smith of Hampton, Va.,
Wilma Wickham of Wichita Falls, Texas, Louetta Bryan of Atmore, Ala., and
Sharon Kay Duncan of Jefferson City; two sisters, Lena and Etta May; and
23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren. Services were Friday, April 2, in Butler
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Hendrickson officiating. Burial
was in Greenwood Cemetery. Casketbearers were Oby Jarman, Willie Jarman,
Ora Jarman, Ed Jarman, Dale Duncan and John Ora Jarman.

Wallace Jones, 83, Pleasant Hope, died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 23,
1999, at his home after a lingering illness. He was born Oct. 8, 1915, in
Greenfield, the son of Clarence C. Sr. and Lennie B. Smith Jones. He was a
member of the Pleasant Hope First Baptist Church and was retired from the
Missouri Department of Transportation. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World
War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in August 1998, his
parents and a brother, Kyle Jones. Surviving are his daughter, Patricia
Murray of Pleasant Hope; two sons, Tom A. Jones and his wife, Wanda, of
Springfield and Richard A. Jones and his wife, Linda, of Clinton; one
brother, Clarence Jones Jr. and his wife, Wilda, of Springfield; nine
grandchildren, Robert and Annita Snyder, Dennis and Jennifer Murray,
Stephanie and Amanda Murray, Tamitha and Jeff Gott, Tom Jones II and Amy,
Stacie Jones Worth, Hollie and Annie Jones; and six great-grandchildren,
Alexa, Sydney, Devin, Christopher, Allie and Jordan, Raia and Kendra.
Services were Friday, March 26, in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Charles Hufft officiating. Musical soloist was Kraig Jones. Burial

Dorothy Gayle Madison, 59, Dunnegan, died Thursday, March 4, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Hospital. The daughter of Luther and Myrtie
Hollingsworth Van Bebber, she was born in Kansas City, Kan., on June 29,
1939. She was married on Nov. 27, 1961, to Russell K. Madison, and they
lived on a farm west of Humansville where she was a homemaker. She was of
the Methodist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents; two
brothers, Jack and Bob Van Bebber; two sisters, Peggy Enochs and Betty
Cousin; and a child who died in infancy. Survivors include her husband,
Russell, of the home; four children, Connie Roehrs and Rhonda Sweeney,
both of Lamar, Russell Madison Jr. and Gene Madison, both of Dunnegan; a
brother, Jim Van Bebber of Kansas City; and seven grandchildren. Graveside
services were Saturday, March 6, in Alder Cemetery west of Humansville
with the Rev. Don Covington officiating. Pallbearers were John Wesley,
Willie Dodson, Joe Nottingham, Ron Roehrs, Jerry Cook, Leonard Baker, Roy
Scott and Jason Neal. Arrangements were under the direction of Murray

B. Ruth Martin, 76, Topeka, Kan., died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, in
Colmery-O'Neil Veterans Medical Center, Topeka, Kan., following an
extended illness. She was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Polk County, the daughter
of J.W. and Hattie C. Robbins Martin. She attended public schools in
Missouri and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of
Kansas City, where she majored in English language and literature and
minored in speech and radio. Her career in journalism began in general
news reporting at the Bartlesville, Okla., Daily Examiner-Enterprise. She
then did general reporting for the Columbia Tribune before becoming an
on-the-air newscaster for radio station WONE in Dayton, Ohio. She also
served as a staff writer and editor for the Joplin Globe before moving to
Topeka, Kan., as a staff writer and editor for the Topeka Capital-Journal,
where she won state and national awards. After semi-retirement, she did
free-lance writing and editing. Survivors include several cousins.
Graveside services were Friday, April 2, in Humansville Cemetery. Services
were under the direction of Murray Funeral Home, Humansville.

Joanna McKnight, 72, Morrisville, died Monday, March 15, 1999, in Cox
Medical Center South, Springfield, following a short illness. She was a
lifelong resident of Polk County, being born in Wishart on April 3, 1926,
to Joe and Edna Ingram Lane. She was a homemaker and a member of
Morrisville United Methodist Church. She was also a charter member of the
Morrisville Lioness Club. Survivors include her husband, Bob, of the home;
two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Linda McKnight of Morrisville and
Jim and Lisa McKnight of Pleasant Hope; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie
and Larry Robertson of Fair Grove; five brothers, Ingram Lane and Charlie
Lane, both of Springfield, Bill Lane of Fair Play, James Lane of Wichita,
Kan., and Kenneth Lane of Kansas City; a sister, Sarah Elson of Ash Grove;

Leona Maxine Presley, 83, Walnut Grove, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at
St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, following a lengthy
illness. The daughter of Willard W. and Rhoda Mae Edmisson Doke, she was
born Oct. 24, 1915 in Greene County near Walnut Grove. She was a lifelong
resident of the Walnut Grove and Willard areas. She was a homemaker and a
member of the Northside Assembly of God Church, Springfield. She was
united in marriage with E.B. Presley on Jan. 31, 1934, and they were
together for more than 65 years. To this union two daughters were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Millard and Galen
Doke; and three sisters, Irene Rose, Louise Presley and Joanna Jackson.
Survivors include her husband, E.B. Presley, of the home; two daughters
and sons-in-law, Bernice and Jim Hawk, Walnut Grove, and Reva and Gene
Quick, Morrisville; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are four sisters, Velma Smith and
Lucille Lane, both of Springfield, Vaundia Presley, Willard, and Mona
Sappington, Walnut Grove, and several nieces and nephews. Services were
Friday, March 26, in Rose Hill Baptist Church, Willard, with the Revs.

Jean Ethelyn Green Proffitt, 55, Norco, Calif., died at 6:50 p.m. Monday,
March 29, 1999, in her home. She was born May 22, 1943, in Wilmar, Calif.,
to William Floyd and Ethel Baker Green. In 1946, the family moved to
Stockton and raised their girls on the family farm. She attended one-room
rural schools until high school. In 1958 the family moved to Fresno,
Calif., where she finished her education, graduating from McClane High
Shcool. On June 30, 1961, she was united in marriage to Navy Radioman
Charles Michael Proffitt in Honolulu, Hawaii. To this union two children
were born, Mark and Pamela. In 1968, she and her family moved to Norco,
Calif., where they have resided since. She is survived by her husband,
Charles, of the home; her mother, Ethel Green, Humansville; a son, Mark
Proffitt, Norco, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Henry
Aguilar, Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Frances Altman, Chester W.V.; and one
grandchild, Crispin Aguilar. Crispin has given her untold hours of love
and enjoyment, and their relationship is unique. She was preceded in death
by her father, William Floyd Green. Services were Tuesday, April 6, in
Pitts Chapel with Dr. Russell Adams officiating. Burial followed in
Hickory Grove Cemetery near Arcola.

Beulah Mae Putnam, 91, Humansville, died Monday, March 29, 1999, in
Sac-Osage Hopsital, Osceola. The daughter of Albert and Carrie May Leffler
Green, she was born Feb. 22, 1908, in Tuttle, Okla. She was married to
John Putnam Oct. 12, 1931. To this union a daughter, Frances Darlene, was
born. She spent nearly 35 years working in business in Humansville, from
1945 to 1959 at Putnam and Green Grocery Store, then at Branham Hardware
Store and later at Camey Dry Goods, Payne Dry Goods and Ireland Dry Goods.
She was a member of the Humansville Christian Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband, John Putnam, on Sept. 24, 1951. Survivors include
her daughter, Darlene, of the home; three cousins; dear friends Tom and
Ruthellen Heitman; and many other friends and acquaintances. Graveside
services will be at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Humansville Cemetery with
the Rev. Bill Vernon and the Rev. Paul Brock officiating. Pallbearers will
be Tom Heitman, Freddie Martin, Pat Kennedy, Roger Culbertson, Ross Vaughn
and Bob Butcher. Arrangements are under the direction of Murray Funeral

Iona Ruth Valentine Steely, 83, died Friday, March 12, at Citizens
Memorial Hospital. She was born Dec. 21, 1915, in Ildora, Iowa. She
attended grade school in Butler County, Iowa, and graduated from
Greenville High School in 1934. She was married to Leonard McDonald on
Feb. 14, 1937. To this union four daughters were born, who survive her:
Jane Passi of McCoysville, Ga., Dixie Baetsle of Altoona, Iowa, Sally
Anderson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Karen Kingsley of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Also surviving are four sons-in-law, Leo, Jim, Ed and Harold; 14
grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Her
husband, Leonard, passed away in 1971. On June 30, 1972, she married John
Mitchell of Bolivar, where she lived until his death in 1987. Surviving
stepchildren are Joyce, Bertha, Albert and Linda. On March 25, 1991, she
married Lawrence Steely of Stockton, where she lived until his death in
1993. Surviving stepchildren are Carole, Shirley, Jane, Linda and Frank.
She then moved to Bolivar, where she has resided until her death. Besides
her children and grandchildren, she is survived by two brothers and four
sisters, Ray Valentine of Des Moines, Iowa, Jim Valentine of Bradenton,
Fla., Maureen Neesen of Waterloo, Iowa, Glennis Fallica of Boston, Mass.,
Neva Moravec of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Marjorie Roy of Ogden, Iowa, as well
as many nieces, nephews and stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death
by her parents, three husbands, one granddaughter, three brothers and two
sisters. She was a faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene in
Bolivar. She will be deeply missed by her two special friends, Helen Reed
and Faye Hughes, and many others. Services were Tuesday, March 16, in the
Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rod Campbell officiating. Burial
was in the Mitchell Campground Cemetery southwest of Bolivar.
Casketbearers were Robert Baetsle, David Anderson, Danny Dimmen, Bill

Aleen L. Stephens, 92, Bolivar, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, in Citizens
Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was born Oct. 28, 1906,
in Aldrich to C.C. and Jeanie DeGraffenreid. On Feb.15, 1928, she was
united in marriage to William Drew Stephens, and to this union four
children were born, Morris Eugene, Joyce Ellen, Gladys Fay and Georgia
Ann. She was converted at an early age and united with Pleasant Ridge
Missionary Baptist Church in Aldrich. In later years, she moved her
membership to Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a
member until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband, Drew; one son, Morris Stephens; two daughters, Joyce Rowan and
Georgia Rogers; one grandson, Bradley Epperson; two brothers, Paul and
Billy DeGraffenreid; and three sisters, Adrian Hickman, Lucille Moyer and
Nellie DeGraffenreid. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law,
Gladys and Johnny Epperson, Springfield; a daughter-in-law, Wilma
Stephens, Bolivar; two sons-in-law and their wives, Clinton and Rayetta
Rowan, Aldrich, and Carl and Ann Rogers, Morrisville; three sisters and
two brothers, Faye Miller, Doris Manuel, Florence Cloyd, Charles
DeGraffenreid, all of Bolivar, and Lee DeGraffenreid, Clinton; 10
grandchildren, Susan Gravatt, Stephen Rowan, Gayla Hancock, Carol Ann
Kahler, Ruth Medley, Ken Stephens, Alan Rogers, Anita Wilson, Jill Rosell
and Beth Rogers; 22 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services were Friday, March 19 in Pitts Chapel with Elder Doug Skinner and
the Rev. Lon Killingsworth officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Ridge
Cemetery, Aldrich. Music was provided by Lon Killingsworth and the Calvary

Mildred Irene Stevenson, 78, Bolivar, died Sunday, March 14, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Health Care Facility. The daughter of Lloyd and Bess
Bilyeu Warren, she was born Jan. 15, 1921, at Scooterville, Texas. A
homemaker, she had been a resident of Bolivar since 1985, formerly living
at Warrensburg and in the state of California. Her husband, Elmer L.
Stevenson, preceded her in death March 5, 1994. Survivors include six
children, Kirby Stevenson and Doris Walsh, both of Bolivar, Boyd Stevenson
of Warrensburg, Richard Stevenson of South San Francisco, Calif., Ronney
Stevenson of Redwood City, Calif., and Don Stevenson of Moscow, Idaho; a
brother, A.J. Warren, Citrus Heights, Calif.; a sister, Bertha Williams,
state of Alabama; 21 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren. Cremation was under the direction of Murray

Arthur Edwin Stringberg, 72, Humansville, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at
his home. The son of Arthur E. and Mildred Dudley Stringberg, he was born
Dec. 27, 1926, at Kansas City. During World War II he served in the U.S.
Navy from 1943 to 1948. On July 29, 1949, he was married to Naomi Cooper.
He was a carpenter working out of Union Local 61 in Kansas City. He was
active for 14 years in the Boy Scouts, serving 11 years as scoutmaster. He
was a member of the Humansville VFW Post, American Legion, Eastgate
Masonic Lodge, Independence and Ruskin Heights Baptist Church. Survivors
include his wife, Naomi, of the home; three children, David Stringberg of
Kansas City, Debi Yeager of Peculiar and Diana Schrock of Garden City; a
sister, Florence Simpson of Kansas City, Kan.; nine grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. Cremation was under the direction of Murray Funeral
Home, Humansville, with burial Thursday, March 18, in Springfield National
Cemetery.

Floyd C. Thomas, 94, Bolivar, died Friday, March 19, 1999, in his home. He
was born June 27, 1904, in Bates County, the son of Oliver and Annie
Genevieve Ferguson Thomas. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the
Fairview United Methodist Church at Huron. In October 1927, he was united
in marriage to Velma B. Losey, who preceded him in death in 1992. Also
preceding him in death were two infant sons, Floyd Jr. and Troy, his
parents and a son-in-law, Gail Smith. Survivors include five children,
Betty Jump and her husband, Marion, and Roy Thomas and his wife, Elaine,
all of Bolivar; Paul Thomas and his wife, Ann, Raytown; LaVonne Smith,
Roach; and Sharon Coffey and her husband, Richard, Bolivar; a sister,
Hazel Edwards, state of California; 13 grandchildren, 19
great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of other
relatives and friends. Graveside services were Monday, March 22, in
Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Harold Hendrickson officiating.

Robert Tyrone Varnado, 23, Jackson, Miss., died as a result of a traffic
accident. A 1994 graduate of Clinton High School, Clinton, Miss., he was a
senior sports management major at Southwest Baptist University. He was an
offensive lineman for the SBU Bearcat football team and a member of the
track team. He is survived by his fiancee, Allison Williams, Bolivar; his
mother, Joyce Marshall, Jackson, Miss.; his father, Bobby Bell Sr.,
Brookhaven, Miss.; his brothers, Stanley Douglas Smith, Jackson, Miss.,
and Bobby Bell Jr., Brookhaven, Miss.; his grandmothers, Georgia Bell and
Hannah Smith, both of Jackson, Miss.; and an uncle, Cecil Varnado,
Jackson, Miss. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, in the
Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kurt Caddy officiating. Steve
Morrow and students from Southwest Baptist University will deliver the
eulogy. The body is being sent to the Peoples Funeral Home in Jackson,
Miss., for burial on Saturday at the Garden Memorial Park Cemetery.

Roy Hadley Vincent, 90, Bolivar, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, in his
home. He was born Oct. 3, 1908, at Polk to William L. and Maggie Cowden
Vincent. A lifelong resident of Polk County, he was an active farmer until
his death and had worked for the state and county road departments. He was
united in marriage to Pearl Barnes on March 18, 1933, and to this union
two children were born. He was saved as a young married man during a
revival at Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church at Polk and united with
the church and was baptized. Later, moving to Goodson, he united with
Goodson Missionary Baptist Church where he remained a faithful member,
attending as health permitted. Survivors include his wife of 65 years,

several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two
sisters, Jean Huckaby and Pauline Byrum; and a brother, Ray Vincent, who
died as a young child. Roy was blessed with a very kind nature, loved his
family dearly and was a joy to know and be around. He will be greatly
missed by his family and friends. Services were Sunday, March 14, in Pitts
Chapel with Bro. Mike McCurry officiating. Music was provided by the
Goodson Missionary Baptist Church choir. Burial followed in Crestview
Memorial Garden Cemetery.

Jewell Mae Vire, 84, Buffalo, died at 2:54 a.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. She was born Jan.
6, 1915, in Greene County to John Samuel and Martha Buckner Butts. On Oct.
11, 1935, she was united in marriage to Jesse M. Vire, and to this union
two sons were born, Valdon and Vern. Survivors include her husband, Jesse,
of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Valdon Vire of Hannibal and
Vern and Angie Vire of Springfield; and two grandchildren, Denise Hall and
her husband, Scott, of Monett and Gerry Vire of Springfield. Services will
be at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Pitts Chapel with the Rev. Harold
Hendrickson officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hope Cemetery.

1, 1999, in Cox Medical Center North. She was born March 8, 1912, in
Bolivar to Joachym and Anna Sindelar Skalicky. She was preceded in death
by her parents; her first husband, Charles LeHar; her second husband, Art
Washburn; five sisters, Anna, Helen, Magdeline and Clara Skalicky and
Adela Piercy; two brothers, Jimmie and Frank Skalicky; and a niece,
Marianne Skalicky. She is survived by two brothers, Albert Skalicky and
his wife, Mary, of Bolivar and Joseph Skalicky of Spokane, Wash.; four
nephews, Francis Skalicky of Springfield, Albert Skalicky of Bolivar,
Jimmie Skalicky of La Verne, Calif., and Johnny Skalicky of Los Angeles,
Calif.; two nieces, Alta Cohen Hunt, St. Charles, and Carol Kearny,

Kathleen Sue Witt, 56, Stockton, died at 9:45 p.m. Monday, March 8, 1999,
in St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield. She was born Sept. 18,
1942, in Cedar County, the daughter of Charlie and Eva Hamby McQuirk. A
1960 graduate of Stockton High School, she was married to David Gene Witt
March 27, 1970. She was a licensed practical nurse. She worked at Citizens
Memorial Hospital and more recently for CMH Home Health Care and CMH
Hospice. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kenneth
McQuirk. Survivors include her husband, David, of the home, and a son,
James, of Springfield. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 11, in
Murray Chapel with Bro. Kenneth Turner officiating, Interment will be in
Lindley Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today

Fred Leroy "Bill" Wright, 84, Pittsburg, died Saturday, March 27, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Hospital. He was born in Oklahoma on May 23, 1914. On
Oct. 25, 1931, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Crisler, who
preceded him in death Dec. 28, 1998. He had lived in Pittsburg for 27
years, and before his retirement had owned his own wholesale food
brokerage business. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Forrest
L. and ? Wright of Sun City, Ariz., and two grandchildren. Graveside
services were Monday, March 29, at Crestview Memorial Gardens Cemetery
with the Rev. Harold Hendrickson officiating. Arrangements were under the

Shirley Harper Zukovich, 63, Gladstone, died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at
Truman Medical Center, Kansas City. A longtime Kansas City area resident,
she was born near Quincy. She worked for AT&T in Lee's Summit for 31
years, retiring in 1989. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law,
Joseph and Carol Zukovich, Gladstone; her mother, Anna Harper Warren,
Kansas City; and four sisters, Peggy Baldwin of Lee's Summit, Patsy
Tumlinson of Galena, Kan., and Beverly Stillson and Betty Marks, both of
Kansas City. Services will be at noon today (Wednesday) at the
Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel, Osceola. Burial will be in the Harper Cemetery
near Quincy. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon today at the funeral

Lucile E. Danielson, 86, Bolivar, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at
Citizens Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. The daughter of John and
Mattie Kirksey, she was born Aug. 17, 1912, and grew up at Jerico Springs.
After college she lived in Kansas City while employed by Sears Roebuck &
Co. She married Kenneth Danielson of Lander, Wyo., and they lived there
until their retirement, when they moved to Sun City, Ariz., in 1963. She
was a retired music teacher. When her health failed in 1995, she moved to
Bolivar, where she lived in the home of her nephew and his wife, Jerry and
Barbara Kirksey. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Kenneth; and her brother and sister, Bernard Kirksey and Beulah
Wooldridge. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sandra Walker, of Lander,
Wyo.; two grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-grandson. Also
surviving are five nephews, two nieces, three cousins and many other
relatives and friends. Graveside services were Sunday, Feb. 28, in the
Stockton Cemetery with Elder Don Mick officiating. Burial was under the
direction of Butler Funeral Home. Honorary casketbearers were nephews and
nieces Jerry Kirksey, Floyd Wooldridge, Bernie Wooldridge, J.A.
Wooldridge, Jimmy Wooldridge, Ellen Dean Ewing and Judy Turner.

Willene Ann Hudson, 73, Humansville, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at the
Sac-Osage Hospital. She was born in the Bolivar area, the daughter of
Claude and Susan Baldwin Ryan. She was a homemaker. She had been a
resident of the Country Villa Care Center in Humansville for the past four
years. Previously she had resided in Osceola. She was preceded in death by
her parents; two sons, Timothy in infancy and Gary Lee in Vietnam; and
three brothers, Darrell, Ted and Bob Ryan, all of Bolivar. She is survived
by two sons, Larry Hudson and his wife, Donna, Osceola, and Ricky Hudson,
address unknown; one daughter, Debra Hamp, Clinton; seven grandchildren,
Jim Hudson and his wife, Jean, of St. Louis, Mike and Michele Hudson
Ijames and Jeff and Betty Hudson Ijames, all of Mountain Grove, Tony,
Arlis and Amy Hamp of Clinton, Melissa Hudson of Springfield; two
great-grandchildren, Tanner Elisabeth and Garren Kieth Ijames, Mountain
Grove; two sisters, Claudine McCracken and her husband, Howard, Lee's

Audrey V. Hutchison, 95, Bolivar, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at
Citizens Memorial Health Care Facility following a brief illness. She was
born Feb. 14, 1903, near Bona, the daughter of Thomas and Jan Birch Akins.
She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Polk County. She was a
member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church at the time of her death.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Norman and Betty Hutchison,
Springfield; one granddaughter and her husband, Connie and Mike Henderson,
Marchall, Ill.; two great-granddaughters, Rebecca Henderson, Marshall,
Ill., and Michelle Mull and her husband, Steven, Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; a
sister, Cloa Hopkins, state of Kansas, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron Hutchison, in Aug. 1985; a
great-granddaughter, Jodi Henderson-Suber; two brothers and four sisters.
Services were Friday, Feb. 5, in Pitts Chapel with Elder Keith Frieze
officiating. Music was provided by Freda Payne and Betty Lee; pianist was
Mary Childress. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Robert Waits Johnson, 70, Bolivar, died at 2:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26,
1999, in the Cox Walnut Lawn Recovery Center, Springfield, the result of a
stroke. He was born Sept. 15, 1928, five miles southeast of Bolivar in the
Mt. Gilead community. He was the fourth child of Luther J. and Annalee
Graham Johnson, a pioneer Polk County family. Robert attended Leith Rural
School and Bolivar High School. He was inducted into the U.S. ARmy in
March 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He spent nine months near the front
lines in Korea taking supplies to the fron lines, earning the rank of
staff seargent. Upon release from the army, he was employed at Erwin &
Blue Funeral Home in Bolivar, later working at Borden's Dairy in Kansas
City. On Feb. 12, 1955, he was married to Harlene Stewart. One daughter
was born to this union. In 1956, he purchased a local dry cleaners and
also introduced the community to the first coin-operated laundry, which he
operated until his retirement. Robert loved to fish, and the day before he
became ill, he had been trying his luck at the lake. He also enjoyed
restoring antique tractors. He grew up attending the Bolivar First
Christian Church and received several pins for yearly attendance. Robert
had been a member of the Howard S. Keeling American Legion Post No. 138
since release from the service. He was preceded in death by his parents; a
sister and her husband, Dorothy Lee and Lloyd Nease; and a sister-in-law,
Virginia Johnson. Surviving are his daughter and her husband, Roberta and
Jim Doke, and their children, Jamie, Jennifer and Jay Robert Doke, all of
Brighton; two brothers, Farrel Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth, and
Charles E. Johnson, all of Bolivar; two nieces, Sharon Nease Black of
Portland, Ore., and Cynthia Nease Goefft of San Francisco, Calif.; two
great-nieces and two great-nephews; an aunt, Helen Phillips of Bolivar;
and a close firend, Ann Gamble of Dunnegan. Robert was loved by his
family, and he delighted in his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed
by family and friends. Services were Sunday, Feb. 28, in the Butler
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Hendrickson officiating. Musical
soloist was Cheryl Bowers with Wanda Short as pianist. Burial was in the
Greenwood Cemetery. Casketbearers were Jerry Divin, Buck Armstrong, J.W.
Ball, Johnny Gifford, Charles Robert Johnson and Bud Glendenning. Memorial
contributions may be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund.

Russell Madison Murdock Jr. , 64, Weaubleau, died Feb. 10, 1999, at his
home. He was born July 15, 1934, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Russell
Murdock Sr. and Olivia Welch Murdock. He was married July 13, 1952, to
Gladys Pauline Trowbridge. He was a career soldier in the U.S. Army. He
entered the service in 1954 and retired in 1979 as a Sergeant First Class.
He received many medals, and he was the most decorated soldier in the
state of Kansas after the Vietnam War. After retirement from the Army, he
worked as a prison guard at Lansing State Prison, Lansing, Kan. He was
preceded in death by his praents and a brother, Robert Geffs Murdock, in
1937. Survivors include his wife, Gladys, of the home; a son and
daughter-in-law, Paul and Cheree Murdock of Humansville; twin daughters
and their husbands, Jeannie and Wesley Jeter of Collins and Jannie and
John Thompson of Leavenworth, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Ruth
Conrad of Weaubleau; a niece and two nephews, Kelly Conrad, Dan and Larry
Randall, all of Weaubleau; and several nieces and nephews living out of
state. Services were Saturday, Feb. 13, in Murray Chapel, Humansville,
with David McQuown officiating. Cremation was under the direction of
Murray Funeral Home.

Winona Mae Kilpatrick, 95, went to be with the Lord at 1:10 a.m. on Feb.
3, 1999, at Maranatha Manor. She had made her home in Springfield since
1958 and before that lived in Bolivar. Nona was born on May 19, 1903, near
Spencer, Ind., to James and Caroline Davis. The family moved to western
Oklahoma, where she grew up. She attended Goodwell Normal School and then
taught in a country school for three years before she married Barney
Kilpatrick on June 24, 1924. Survivors include a daughter, Venita Bridger,
Springfield, and her four children and spouses, 13 grandchildren, and four
great-grandchildren; daughter Norma Lou Allen and her husband, Arthur, of
Belton, their three children and spouses, and eight grandchildren;
daughter Carolyn Roberts and her husband, Bill, of Bolivar, their six
children, five spouses, and 10 grandchildren; and daughter Shirley
Borgstadt and her husband, Gareld, of Springfield, their six children,
five spouses, and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving are sister, Marjorie
Williams, of Tulsa, Okla., and a brother, Lawrence Davis, 101 years of
age, Beaver, Okla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Barney; a
son, Kenneth Allen, who died as a child; three sisters, Bura Shepherd,
Myra Kilpatrick, and Esther Jenkins; a brother, Jess Davis; and her
parents, James and Caroline Davis. Being raised in a Christian home, Nona
was a faithful member of the Church of Christ all of her life. Many
benefited from her loving, giving nature and saw the love of God expressed
through her life. Services were Saturday, Feb. 6, in Murray Chapel with
Dennis Smith and Gary Brock officiating. Music was by Von and Barbara
Morgan. Pallbearers were her 10 grandsons, Patrick, Michael and Gregory
Bridger, Kent Allen, Bill, Matt and Mark Roberts, Dan, Ted and Josh
Borgstadt. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may

Shelly May Lightfoot, 30, Columbus, Ga., formerly of Polk, died Sunday,
Feb. 7, 1999, in Columbus Medical Center following a sudden illness. She
was born Aug. 9, 1968, in Springfield to O.E. "Gene" and Carolyn
Kimberling Lightfoot. She had served in the U.S. Army and was employed by
Wal-Mart. She was a member of Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her parents, Gene and Carolyn Lightfoot, Polk; her
fiance, Carl Boyd, Columbus, Ga.; a son, Carl J. Boyd; two daughters,
Candace N. Lightfoot and Colleen Boyd, all of Columbus, Ga.; two brothers,
Carl A. Wilken, Urbana, and Oral E. Lightfoot Jr., Polk; a sister, Sheila
Shaff, Harker Heights, Texas; a grandmother, Stella Lightfoot, Polk; and

John Monroe Mead, 86, went to be with the Lord at 1:50 p.m. Friday, Feb.
26, 1999, at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield. John was born
Dec. 28, 1912, near Fair Play, the oldest child of James Conway Mead and
Bertie Susan Manuel Mead. He was educated in the schools of Polk County,
and after the death of his father on Oct. 25, 1936, he took over the
duties of the farm with his mother and younger sister. He was inducted
into the armed services Nov. 2, 1942, and joined the 96th infantry
division at Camp Adair, Ore. He saw service in the South Pacific and was
decorated three times. He was wounded in the fierce battle for Chocolate
Drop Hill on the island of Okinawa. He returned from the service to a
position with the Bear Creek Lime Quarry, where he served as plant
superintendent for five years. He moved to Stockton, where he worked for
Hammons Products Co. in the industrial electronics department as chief
sorting machine operator for 15 years. Then, due to his mother's ill
health, he retired and bought a home and dedicated his time to caring for
his aging mother. It was then that he met his bride-to-be and on June 5,
1982, he and Etha Marie Sayre were married. This was a very close
relationship, and her death was felt very deeply. John was a lover of
nature and the outdoors. One of his favorite pastimes was hunting for
Indian artifacts, and much of his spare time was given to this hobby. He
was an avid coon hunter and was known throughout the area as a trainer and
handler of fine coonhounds. At the time of his death he was a member of
the Bismont Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie
Mead, his parents and one sister, Fern Pickering of Tulare, Calif.
Survivors include four stepdaughters and their husbands, Beverly Sellers
of Fair Play, Linda Furwalt of Lee's Summit, Jeanie and Gene Lovewell of
Osceola and Elaine and Ed Cler of Gifford, Ill.; and one sister, Helen
Copeland of Lindsay, Calif. Also surviving are 12 stepgrandchildren, 18
step-great-grandchildren, a host of nephews and nieces and many friends.
Services were Sunday, Feb. 28, in Pitts Chapel with the Rev. Joe Rouse
officiating. Music was provided by Erin Mashburn and Laverne Mashburn,
accompanied by Lucinda Crouch. Burial followed in Humansville Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gary Sellers, Mike Murphy, Scott Dobson, Jody Garretson,
Kevin Lovewell and Trent Lovewell.

Octavian Molin, 57, Bolivar, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in Citizens
Memorial Hospital. The son of Molin and Ghizela Petru, he was born Oct.
18, 1941, in Cacova, Romania. A retired machinist for General Eelctric
Co., he had been a resident of the Bolivar area for the past three months,
coming here from Dallas, Texas. He was a member of Eben-Ezer Romanian
Pentecostal Church in Springfield. Surviving is his wife, Lidia, of the
home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in Murray Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Joseph Frinck officiating. Interment will be in
Slagle Cemetery. Prayer service and visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Friday in the funeral home.

Zelma Murray, 93, Bolivar, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, in Citizens
Memorial Health Care Facility following a lingering illness. She was a
lifelong resident of Polk County, being born in Wishart on Oct. 5, 1905,
to William Henry Harrison Euliss and Nora Hensley . She was saved July 21,
1920, and joined Enon Baptist Church. She later moved her membership to
Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. On August 20, 1922, she was united in
marriage to Tom Oliver Murray, and to this union two children were born, a
daughter, Wilma, and a son, Floyd. Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, Floyd and Connie Murray of Springfield; a daughter and
son-in-law, Wilma and Jim Howell of Bolivar; three sisters, Pauline
Hensley and her husband, Wilbur, and twins Ina Ahart and Inez Wilson, all
of Bolivar; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband on Nov. 15, 1976; a grandson; three brothers and three sisters.
Services were Sunday, Feb. 14, in Pitts Chapel with Bro. Doug Skinner
officiating. Burial followed in Enon Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jeff
Murray, Jerry Wells, Mike Sawyer, Charles Cross, Charles (Bub) Cross and

Mabel Grace Peterson, 93, Kansas City, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23,
1999, at the Parklane Medical Center in Raytown after a brief illness. She
was born in Polk County near Pleasant Hope on Oct. 20, 1905, the daughter
of Jerome and Annie Fowler Alley, and had lived in Polk County for many
years. She was also a longtime resident of Springfield, moving to Kansas
City about five years ago to live with her daughter. She was a retired
schoolteacher and a member of the Schofield Missionary Baptist Church
southeast of Half Way. Surviving are her daughter, Ina Jarman, and her
husband, George, Kansas City; one brother, C.C. Alley, and his wife,
Thelma, Pleasant Hope; and two grandchildren. Services were Friday, Feb.
26, in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carroll "Red" Ankrom
and the Rev. Michael R. Ankrom officiating. Burial was in the Schofield
Cemetery. Casketbearers were Jeffrey Jarman, Wesley Jarman, Kenneth
Fisher, Gary Drake, Randy Ankrom and Michael Ankrom.

Regis J. Phillips, 67, Dunnegan, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at Citizens
Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack. He was born May 1, 1931, at
Seneca, Kan., the son of Joseph and Clara C. Vondemkamp Phillips. He
attended Sts. Peter and Paul School in Seneca. At age 17 he joined the
U.S. Air Force, where he served more than 20 years. After his discharge,
he lived in the Kansas City area where he owned and operated auto parts
stores in Kansas City, Gladstone and Platte City. In 1984 he moved to
Springfield, where he owned and operated auto parts stores there and in
Rogersville. He also had an electrical company in Springfield. He had
recently moved to a new home in Dunnegan. He was married to Mary Theresa
Nadeau in 1952 at Caribou, Maine. They were later divorced. Survivors
include a daughter, Sahron Rhynerson, Ballwin; four brothers, Fr. Walter
Phillips of Ogallala, Neb., Leonard Phillips of Bankston, Iowa, Arthur
Phillips of New Vienna, Iowa, and Lyle Phillips of Leawood, Kan.; three
sisters, Vera Knudson and Zita Bergman, both of Seneca, Kan., and Elda Mae
Haverkamp of Wetmore, Kan.; and two grandchildren. The Mass of Christian
burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church,
Seneca, Kan. Burial was in the church cemetery with full military honors.
The rosary was said Monday evening at the Lauer Funeral Home, Seneca, Kan.

Mildred Fay Reynolds, 87, Humansville, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Hospital. The daughter of Curtis and Lavern Pearl
Blackwell, she was born March 28, 1911, at Benton, Ill. She married
William E. Reynolds March 16, 1929. He preceded her in death in May 1988.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Delores DeFoer, two
granddaughters, her parents, four sisters and one brother. She had moved
to Humansville from Redding, Calif., seven years ago to make her home with
her daughter and son-in-law, Billie and Gene Willcutt. She was a homemaker
and a member of the Humansville Full Gospel Church. Surviving are three
daughters, Ruby Almond of Anderson, Calif., Billie Willcutt of Humansville

Lingle Arnold Rife, 68, Bolivar, formerly of Marshall, died at 4:48 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, in St. John's Regional Health Center,
Springfield, following a year-long illness. He was born Dec. 18, 1930, in
Cross Timbers to Ulus and Hazel Arnold Rife. He was retired from Marshall
Shoe Factory and had served in the U.S Air Force. He was of the Assembly
of God faith. On April 30, 1954, he was united in marriage with Janice
Lindell. Survivors include his wife, Janice, of the home; a son and
daughter-in-law, Steven and Beth Rife, Marshall; two daughters and a
son-in-law, Karen and James Bays and Linda Nease, all of Bolivar; three
sisters, Treva Miller of Bakersfield, Calif., Marie Foote of Kansas City,
Kan., and Erma Philbert of Preston; and nine grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Timothy Rife and Lingle A.
Rife Jr.; and a daughter, Hazel Rife. Services will be at 1 p.m. today
(Wednesday) at Bolivar First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Mark
Summers officiating. Burial will follow in Hermitage City Cemetery,
Hermitage. Arrangements are under the direction of Pitts Chapel.

The Rev. Merlin Francis Shively was born Feb. 22, 1927, in Queen City. He
was the son of George Shively and Edna Epperson Shively, both of whom
preceded him in death. He departed this life Feb. 13, 1999, in Cox Medical
Center South, Springfield, after a short illness at the age of 71 years,
11 months and 21 days. On May 1, 1976, he was married to Bonnie Hulston of
Pittsburg. She survives at their home. He is also survived by two
children, Beckie Conard, Monett, and Dan Shively and his wife, Shelly,
Chillicothe; five grandchildren, Jessica Conard, Kelsy Conard, Brooklynn
Shively, Caleb Shively and Phillip J. Stanley; three brothers, Richard
Shively and his wife, Helen, Toledo, Ohio, Rex Shively and his wife, Faye,
Ottumwa, Iowa, and Max Shively and his wife, Neva, Lancaster; and two
sisters, Deloris Carpenter, Lancaster, and Mary Jackson, Ottumwa, Iowa. A
sister, Neva Summerville, preceded him in death. Merlin served his country
during World War II on the USS Holland in the Pacific war zone. Some 40
plus years ago he surrendered to the gospel ministry. After pastoring a
few small churches in north Missouri, he moved to Osceola, where he
pastored the First Baptist Church for eight years. He later pastored the
Highview Baptist Church in Chillicothe for 21 years. In October 1993 he
and Bonnie moved to their home on Lake Pomme de Terre. He was called as
pastor of the Pomme de Terre Baptist Church in October 1994, where he
served faithfully until his passing. Merlin spent many hours raising a
large garden and sharing the vegetables with others. He was known for his
generous heart and love for children. Most of all he was a devoted
husband, father and grandfather. Services were Feb. 16 in the Pomme de
Terre Baptist Church with the Rev. Alan Thompson and Dr. G.H. Surrette
officiating. Music was provided by Jim Suiter and Marti Buckner,
vocalists, and Mary Gatewood, pianist, and included "The Old Rugged Cross
Made the Difference" and "Till the Storm Passes By." Burial was in the
Pittsburg Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Butler Funeral Home,
Bolivar. Casketbearers were L.D. Dunavin, Charles Orndorff, Ronnie
Brannon, Blackie Bonenbaugh, Art Smith and Ora McVey. Honorary
casketbearers were the Rev. Don Hogan, the Rev. Dan Good, the Rev. Robert
Sisney, the Rev. Donald Hart, Dr. Bill Hooper and the Rev. Norman Noble.

John Clifton Johnson Sr., 82, Bolivar, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in his
home. He was born in Laclede County near Orla on Oct. 26, 1916, to Van
Doren and Rebecca Vermillion Johnson. He was united in marriage to Louise
L. Scarborough on Nov. 26, 1938, in Lufkin, Texas. To this union three
daughters and a son were born. He served in the U.S. Army during World War
II and had been a heavy equipment operator for the highway department. He
was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. Survivors include three
daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and Jack Vest of Bolivar, Susan
James of Independence and Carol and Clint Ellingsworth of HIghlandville; a
son and daughter-in-law, John C. Jr. and Patsy Johnson of Bolivar; three
sisters, Loucille DiStasio, state of Illinois, Madeline Bannon, state of
Kansas, and Verna Stake, state of Arkansas; 10 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, on Dec. 11, 1998, after 60
years of marriage. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, in Pitts
Chapel with J.D. Stake officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olive
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the
funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Citizens Memorial

Thelma Marie Steinke, 77, Bolivar, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999 at the
Parkview Health Care Facility after a lingering illness. SHe was born July
30, 1921, in Polk County, the daughter of Albert and Ethel Irene Hook
Wilson. She moved to Milwaukee, Wis., in her early years where she met and
married her husband, Albert Steinke. They returned to Bolivar several
years ago. She was saved in her early childhood and attended First Baptist
Church as long as her health permitted. Survivors include her husband,
Albert C. Steinke, of the home; a stepson, Tom Steinke and his wife, Lynn,
of San Diego, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Mary Insco and her husband, Billy
Ray, of Melbourne, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Coffey, Morrisville; two
sisters-in-law, Lois Wilson and Deloris Wilson, both of Bolivar; six
stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by her parents; two brothers, Homer Wilson and Glen Wilson; and one
stepdaughter, Sandy Johnson. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb.
4, in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Leininger
officiating. Burial will be in the Enon Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery

Rice County, Kan., the son of John and Nettie Thompson. He was a longtime
resident of Great Bend, Kan.; and moved to the Fair Play area in 1985. He
and his wife moved to Bolivar about two years ago. He was a heavy

Mary Theresa Benedetto Jacopetti Vignola, 97, Dunnegan, died Saturday,
Feb. 27, 1999, in Parkview Health Care Facility. The daughter of Joseph
and Theresa Cipriano Benedetto, she was born March 2, 1901, in Torino,
Italy. She came to the U.S. with her family at the age of 5 1/2 on the
ship LaGosgne and remembered seeing the Statue of Liberty as they entered
the harbor. On April 10, 1961, she became a naturalized citizen of the
U.S. Most of her life was lived in Jackson and Sutter Creek, Calif., until
she moved to Dunnegan 20 years ago to live with her daughter and
son-in-law, Elinor and Roy Smith. She was of the Roman Catholic faith. She
was preceded in death by a son, Gy Jacopetti; three brothers, Tony
Benedetto, Joseph Benedetto and Frank Benedetto; and two sisters, Theresa
Del Bono and Doris Paganuci. Survivors include her daughter and
son-in-law, Elinor and Roy Smith, Dunnegan; three nephews, Ed Benedetto,
Clayton, Calif., Alton Benedetto, Northridge, Calif., and Joseph
Benedetto, Jackson, Calif.; and a god-daughter, Annie Ghisue, Oakland,
Calif. Graveside services were Tuesday, March 2, at Plum Grove Cemetery
south of Humansville with the Rev. Charles Costello Sr. officiating.

Carl Thomas Warson, 63, Humansville, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at his
home. The son of Jesse and Mary Groves Warson, he was born Aug. 14, 1935,
at Kansas City, Kan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1963. On May
16, 1964, he was married to Margaret Ellen Tye at Harrisonville. They were
the parents of three children, William Joseph, Bacil Eugene and Tamela
Elaine. He was a retired truck driver and a member of the Strasburg
Baptist Church. He moved to Humansville in 1996 from Lee's Summit. He was
preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Herbert Warson and
Basil Warson. Surviving are his wife, Margaret, of the home; three
children, William Warson of League City, Texas, Bacil Warson of
Humansville and Tamela Martinez of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren,
Laura, William and Christopher Warson of League City, Texas, Samuel and
Jessica Warson of Humansville; three brothers, Eugene Warson and Donald
Warson, both of Collins, and Charles Warson of Kansas City. Services were
Sunday, Feb. 7, in Murray Chapel, Humansville, with the Rev. Robert Harris

Calif., city school district. She was a member of Delta Phi chapter of
Delta Kappa Lamma, Kern City and Sundale Golf Club and Kern City Community
Church. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Foster, Riverside, Calif.;
a granddaughter, Lorraine Bagwell; a grandson, Dan Foster; two
great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Breshears, and his wife, Faye,
DeSoto, Texas; a sister-in-law, Helen Breshears, Bolivar; a niece, Janet

David Randy Wynkoop, 47, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in his home
following an extended illness. The son of Vernon Dale and Alice Thornburg
Wynkoop, he was born April 27, 1951, in Springfield. He was a lifelong
resident of the Aldrich and Walnut Grove areas. He was a truck driver with
Associated Grocers for 23 years, with a 20-year, more than 2 million miles
safe driving record with AG. He was a member of the Teamsters Local Union
No. 245, a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, Aldrich, and attended
Calvary Assembly of God Church, Walnut Grove. He belonged to the Walnut
Grove Boosters and was a 1969 graduate of Morrisville High School. On Oct.
21, 1987, he was united in marriage to Diane Daniel, and they shared 11
years together. He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon "Bill"
Wynkoop, and a brother, Gary Wynkoop. Survivors include his wife, Diane,
three sons, David Dale Wynkoop and his fiancee, Lacey Hughes, Ash Grove,
Bruce Wynkoop and his wife, Lavonne, Springfield, and Jason Carter and his
fiancee, Kim Nagel, Ash Grove; two daughters, Kiley Carter and Sunny
Wynkoop, both of the home; his mother, Alice Wynkoop, Aldrich; one niece,

Brobisky. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years and saw service during
World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. Survivors include a sister
and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Walter Gott, Springfield, and a brother,
James A. Brobisky, Arcadia, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Harriet Elizabeth "Sally" Stalker Brobisky on Aug. 22, 1994. Burial will

United Methodist Church. Frankie is survived by his wife, Shirley, of the
home; his only son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Cristi Van Camp of
Monett; two grandchildren, Spencer and Morgan Van Camp, Monett; a brother,
Fred and his wife Mosel Van Camp, Jefferson City; their daughter, Michelle
and her husband, Tommy Lee, and their children, Megan, Ryan and Tevon of
Miller; Fred and Mosel's sons, John Van Camp of Springfield; Campt. Bret

grandpa and especially loved spending time with his grandson, whether it
was just sitting and talking or watching him play soccer, he was always
there. He was a loving son, husband, dad and grandpa and will be deeply
missed. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 22, in the Butler Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hayes, the Rev. Harold Hendrickson and the
Rev. Wesley Ummel officiating. Musical soloists were Bill Jones and Molly

On June 30, 1946, he was united in marriage to Irene M. Stewart. He was a
member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by
his parents; his wife, Irene, in May 1998; four brothers and two sisters.

Aldrich; three brothers, Donald Carneal of Lowry City, Glen Carneal of

Humansville since 1986, he was a retired farmer. He served in the U.S. Air
Force during World War II, spending two and a half years as a prisoner of
war in Germany. Survivors include five children, Pat Vasser, Enid, Okla.;
Marleen Eastin, Goltry, Okla.; Pam Black, Yuma, Colo.; Dennis Devine,
Sanderson, Fla.; and David Devine, Mesa, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren and 11

Elsie B. Erwin, 87, Bolivar, died late Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at Citizens
Memorial Health Care Facility, where she had been a resident for the past
three and a half years. She was born Feb. 3, 1911, in Long Lane, the
daughter of Nellie Octavia Bradley and James Lewis Howser. On June 1,
1938, she married Willard B. 'Buck' Erwin. They owned and operated the
Erwin Funeral Home from the 30's until 1958. For four years, 1965-1969,
she was part owner and operated the Stuckey's Store at Republic. She
served as Polk County Treasurer from 1970-1978. Upon retirement, she was a
homemaker and a dedicated member of the First Christian Church in Bolivar.
She was also a supporter and member of the original board of the Bolivar
Nursing Home. She was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge in Bolivar, the
Christian Women's Fellowship and the Republican Women's Club. She was a
devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She had a great love of family and
friends and always helped others as long as she was able. She was preceded
in death by her parents, her husband Willard B. 'Buck' Erwin, her
daughter, Evelyn Sue, three sisters, Daisy Alford, Earlie Blankenship and
Dorothy Vincent, and three brothers, Vernon Howser, Victor Howser and Guy
Howser. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Willard B. Erwin
Jr. and Kim Calder of Ashburn, Va.; Kent Erwin and Jeanie Cowan Erwin of
Topeka, Kan.; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Charles Pirkle of
Overland Park, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Tom Goslar, Germany; Missy,
Kristina, and Kent, all of Ashburn, Va.; Lauren and Andrea Pirkle, both of
Overland Park, Kan. and Kellie and Paul Cowan of Topeka, Kan. Also
surviving are several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and

Glen Robert Gannaway, 89, Humansville, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in
Big Spring Care Center, Humansville. The son of Allen and Stella Ray
Gannaway, he was born March 21, 1909, in Cedar County. On July 3, 1942, he
was married to Irene Clifford. They were the parents of two sons, Douglas
and Scott. He was employed at Hammons Products in Stockton for several
years, retiring because of failing health. He was a member of the Dunnegan
Community Bible Church. He had resided at Jolley's Shady Rest in
Humansville since 1991, until going to Big Spring Care Center nine months
ago. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Irene; and his
son, Douglas. Surviving are his son, Scott, Humansville; two brothers and
their wives, Warren and Peggy Gannaway of Leslie and Shelton and Phyllis
Gannaway, Nehawka, Neb.; a sister and her husband, Clara and Nealie Fox of
Stockton; three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Halstead of Kansas City, Doris
John of Weaubleau and Opal Maxwell of Kansas City; two brothers-in-law,
Howard Clifford of Des Moines, Iowa, and Calvin Clifford of Kansas City;
and several nieces and nephews. Services were Friday, Jan. 15, in Murray
Chapel, Humansville, with the Rev. Leon Smith officiating. Music was by
J.R. and Natalie Oldham. Pallbearers were Marvin Fox, J.R. Oldham, Mark
Gannaway, Lonnie Peck, Mark Childs and Wayne John. Interment was in Alder
Cemetery west of Humansville.

Tina Lee Gazaway, 29, St. Louis, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at St.
John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, of complications from breast
cancer. She was born Jan. 12, 1970, in Fort Scott, Kan. Her family lived
in Nevada until 1983 when they moved to Carthage. She graduated from
Carthage High School in 1988. After her graduation from the University of
Missouri-Rolla in 1992, she worked as a chemical engineer for ABB Nuclear
Engineering in Herculaneum. Survivors include her parents, Glen and Judy
Gazaway of Springfield; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rick and Debbie
Gazaway of Fair Play and Danny and Candace Gazaway of Carthage; a sister,
Toni Gazaway, Strafford, Va.; five nephews and one niece; maternal
grandparents, Verner and Mildred Franks, Nevada; and close friends
Jennifer Ward of St. Louis and Kathy Stryker of Wheatland. A memorial
service was held Sunday, Jan. 24, at Pleasant View (Large) Cemetery, Fort
Scott, Kan. Her ashes will be placed around a tree planted at her parents'

Glen Overton Harris, 80, Stockton, died at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20,
1999, at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield. He was born Dec.
9, 1918, near Caplinger Mills to Charles A. and Edith Caldwell Harris and
attended school at West Union, two years at Caplinger Mills High School,
and two years at Stockton High School, graduating in the class of 1937. He
served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and was a member of the Stockton
Masonic Lodge No. 283, Bolivar Chapter No. 5, St. Elmos Commandry, Zabud
Council, Abou Ben Adhem Temple and American Legion Post No. 230. He was
married in the 1940s to Veda Lorton Steward, and they had one son, Donald
Glen Harris. Then on May 2, 1953, he married Beulah Sortors Mitzner, and
they had one daughter, Vickey Elaine Harris. He owned and operated a feed
and farm supply business in Stockton for 25 years. He was a substitute and
regular rural route mail carrier for 28 years before retiring in 1986. He
was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond Harris; and two
sisters, Irene Phipps and Ruth Harris. Survivors include his wife, Beulah,
of the home; one son, Donald Harris, and his wife, Sharon, Lee's Summit;
one daughter, Vickey Davis and her husband, Terry, Bolivar; two
stepdaughters, Anita Krummel and her husband, Charles, Odessa, and Linda
Steward, Dallas, Texas; one stepson, Max Steward and his wife, Sally,
Lee's Summit; five grandchildren, two nieces, two nephews and other
relatives. Services were Saturday, Jan. 23, in Brumback Funeral Home,
Stockton, with burial following in Pankey Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gene
D. Bryant, Ralph E. Clayton, Todd Clayton, Bradley Davis, Earl Johnson and
Chad Krummel. Honorary pallbearers were Lewis Rosenbaum and Eldon Neill.

Marilou Houser, 81, Bolivar, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, in Citizens
Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was born Sept. 15, 1917,
in Kansas City, Kan., to Jess Larkin and Lilly Belle Bigler Miller. She
graduated from Wheatland High School in 1935. On Oct. 6, 1934, she was
united in marriage to Frank William Houser. She had been a clerk for Bruce
Dodson Insurance Agency and a PTA president in the Kansas City, Kan.,
area. She was formerly of the church family from First Christian Church of
Bolivar and was active in the CWF and Lydia's Circle. She was most
recently a member of Antioch Christian Church. Survivors include two
daughters and sons-in-law, Frankie and John Walker of Bolivar and Carol
and Ron Rohrer of Topeka, Kan.; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and
John Robertson, Houston, Texas; one aunt, Alice Hicks of Bolivar; three
grandchildren, John W. Walker and his wife, Kathy, Overland Park, Kan.,
Debbie Srna and her husband, Jon, Manhattan, Kan., and Darin Rohrer,
Topeka, Kan.; six great-grandchildren, Brian, Johnny and Christie Walker
and Ashley, Joshua and Megan Srna, as well as numerous nieces, nephews,
family and friends that she loved very much. She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband, Frank, on April 2, 1981; a brother, James Larkin
Miller; an infant daughter, Judith Belle Houser; and a granddaughter,
Karen Lee Rohrer. Services were Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Antioch Christian
Church with the Rev. Don Hart and the Rev. Scott Carlton officiating.
Music was provided by Tom and Pat Arnold and Lila Jenkins. Burial followed
in Antioch Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and a nephew, John W. Walker, Jon Srna, Darin Rohrer, Brian Walker, John
Michael Walker and Jim Robertson. Honorary pallbearers were Debbie Srna,
Christie Walker, Josh Srna, Kathy Walker, Ashley Srna and Megan Srna.

Gladys I. Hull, 83, Collins, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at her home. The
daughter of James Nelson and Addie Elizabeth Brown Holder, she was born
Oct. 9, 1915, in Cedar County. She was married to Walter Hull June 8,
1941. She was a homemaker and teacher, teaching in several rural schools
at Collins, Weaubleau and Humansville. She was a member of Coon Creek
Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 30, Osceola.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant children and a
brother, Glenn Holder. Survivors include her husband, Walter, of the home;
a daughter, Charlotte Johnson, Stockton; two sisters-in-law and a
brother-in-law, Dorothy Holder and Wilma and Allen Broyles; two
grandchildren, Vanessa Underwood and Chris Johnson; five nieces and
nephews; 14 great-nieces and nephews; seven great-great-nieces and
nephews; and a cousin, Florence Carter. Services were Monday, Jan. 25, in
Murray Chapel, Humansville, with Bro. David Keller officiating. Music was
by Lisa Avery and Kerry Coffel accompanied by Regina Broyles. Pallbearers
were Bud Keller, Don DeShazo, David Baker, Howard Ball, Tim Tadlock and
Clayton Hughes. Interment was in Robinson Cemetery, Collins.

Lee Roy Johnson, 69, Stockton, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in Cox Medical
Center South following a long illness. He was born Aug. 30, 1929, in
Flemington to George and Mary Johnson. He was united in marriage to Joyce
M. Higginbotham on April 8, 1950, in Harrison, Ark. He was a retired stone
mason and a member of Berean Baptist Church in Bolivar. Survivors include
his wife, Joyce, of the home; two daughters, Vera Roach, Sedalia, and
Janie Gwin, Little Rock, Ark.; two sons, Earl Johnson and Clifford
Johnson, both of Stockton; his mother, Mary Johnson, Butler; two sisters,
Mabel Irene Henry, Rich Hill, and Betty Ridley, Stockton; a brother,
Howard Johnson, Belton; six granddaughters, six grandsons and two
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and two
brothers, George W. Johnson and Kenny Johnson. Services will be at 1 p.m.
today (Wednesday) in Pitts Chapel with Bro. Bill Dollinger officiating.
Burial will follow in Lindley Prairie Cemetery at Bear Creek. Pallbearers
will be his grandsons and nephews, Brian Pritchard, Brent Pritchard, Kevin
Johnson, Dustin Roach, Mike Johnson, Steve Cox, Tim Ridley and Howard
Johnson Jr. Honorary pallbearer will be grandson Garrett Johnson. He was a
loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He will be

William E. "Bill" Jones, 95, Springfield, formerly of Polk County, died
Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in Cox Medical Center South following a short
illness. He was born June 6, 1903, the oldest of five children of John
Calvin and Dessie Dell Faulkner Jones. He lived and farmed in Polk County
most of his life before moving to Springfield in 1978. On Nov. 16, 1929,
he was united in marriage with Alma I. Cobb, and to this union six
children wer born. He was a member of Schofield Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, Calvin and Emma
Lee Jones of Lamar, Dr. Harold and Geraldine Jones of Springfield, Shelby
and Frances Jones of Rogersville and Harlan Jones of Springfield; two
daughters and a son-in-law, Maxine and Herbert Lawson of Ashford, W.Va.,
and Joye Sumner of Springfield; a sister, Laura Eagon, Lebanon; 13
grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma, on Jan. 3, 1994;
two brothers, one sister and one grandson. Services were Tuesday, Jan. 12,
at Rock Prairie Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Dennis Spear and Bro.
Doyle Mayfield officiating. Music was provided by the Schofield and Rock
Prairie Missionary Baptist Church choirs. Burial was in Rock Prairie
Cemetery under the direction of Pitts Chapel.

Harley A. Boaz Jr., 83, Kansas City, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at
Beverly Health Center, Smithville. He was born May 15, 1915, in Polk
County. He was retired after 25 years as a mechanic for TWA. Survivors
include his wife, Winifred Boaz, of the home; one daughter, Bernice
Bradley, Gladstone; one brother, Dennis Boaz, Arlington, Texas; seven
grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Services were Monday, Jan. 25, at D.W. Newcomer's White Chapel Funeral
Home, Gladstone. Graveside services and burial were later that afternoon
at Slagle Cemetery south of Bolivar.

Ken Luce, 70, Bolivar, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in his home. He was
born July 23, 1928, in Milano, Texas, to Herbert William and Nellie
Elizabeth Stovall Luce. On Oct. 3, 1953, he was united in marriage to
Katherine Henley Norris. He was a career military man who had served in
the Air Force. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra
and Ron Thomas, Bolivar, and Debbie Luce, Austin, Texas; two brothers, one
sister, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews. Requiem mass will be at noon Friday, Jan. 22, in St. Luke's
Anglican Church, Springfield, with Father Charles Bennett presiding.
Burial will follow in Springfield National Cemetery with military rites by
the Honor Guard Detail from Whiteman Air Force Base. Arrangements are
under the direction of Pitts Chapel.

Joseph Willard Mabary, 77, Humansville, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at his
home north of Humansville. The son of George and Grace Hollingsworth
Mabary, he was born June 15, 1921, at Fairfield in Benton County. A
longtime resident of Humansville, he was a farmer. He was married to
Thelma Louise Maberry, who preceded him in death April 15, 1981. He was
also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Faye Phillips; and a
brother, Clinton Mabary. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law,
Connie and Vernon Lee Myers Jr., Flemington; a son, Ronald Lee Mabary,
state of Texas; two grandchildren, Jenniefer Lee Myers, Bolivar, and Jared
Michael Myers, Flemington; two sisters and their husbands, Arlene and
Virgil Phillips, Cross Timbers, and Pauline and Harv Shelton, state of
Texas; a brother, Kenneth Mabary, Pittsburg; and a sister-in-law, Faye

Murray Chapel, Humansville, with the Rev. Mike Brixey officiating. Burial

Thomas S. McGee, 90, Flemington, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at
Parkview Health Care Facility. He was born March 22, 1908, in Quincy, the
son of James and Anna Brown McGee. He and his wife of 66 years, Doris, had
resided in Kansas City for 40 years before retiring to Hickory County in
1974. He had worked for an architectural construction firm as an
electrical inspector. He was a member of the Bolivar United Methodist
Church and of the Hogles Creek Masonic Lodge No. 279 of Wheatland, where
he had received his 50-year pin. He was preceded in death by his parents
and a daughter, Joyce McGee Barton. Survivors include his wife, Doris
McGee, of the home; two daughters, Judy McGee, Wichita, Kan., and Jane
Cudahy and her husband, Champ, Kansas City; a son-in-law, Keith Barton,
Kalamazoo, Mich.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services
were Saturday, Jan. 23, at Hathaway-Peterman Funeral Home Chapel,
Wheatland, with the Rev. Wes Ummel, the Rev. J.R. Earsom and Tommy Lynn
officiating. Burial was in Bowers Chapel, Urbana. Masonic rites by Hogles

Mary Joan Millam, 60, Collins, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at Golden
Valley Memorial Hospital, Collins. She was born Nov. 21, 1938, near
Dunnegan. At the age of 10 she moved with her family to Kansas City and
later to Leavenworth, Kan., where she graduated from high school and
became lifelong friends with Joe and Athena Phillips and Pat Brown Logan.
On Aug. 16, 1957, she was married to James Millam, and to this union were
born four sons, Daniel, Douglas, David and Darren. She had worked for
Unitog and for Wal-Mart and also owned and operated the Maple Leaf Quilt
Shop in Quarles. She served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and
treasurer for Quarles Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
mother, Chloe Rountree. Survivors include her husband, Jim Millam, of the
home; four sons and their families, Dan Millam, Kansas City, Kan., and his
children, Jordan and Jill; Douglas Millam of Springfield; David Millam,
his wife, Anne, and their children, Katie and Michael, Lee's Summit; and
Darren Millam and his wife, Janet, Kansas City; a sister, Dorothy (Dot)
Espy, and her husband, Dick, Linwood, Kan., and their children, Matt Espy
and Valerie Elliott; and one uncle, Robert Smith, Xenia, Ohio. Also
surviving are a foster daughter, Dee Weathers, and her family of
Murfreesboro, Tenn., and close friends Sharon and Bernie Henehan. After
cremation, memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at
Quarles Baptist Church, north of Clinton, followed by a private burial
service at Memorial Gardens, Clinton.

Nola Ellen Beatrice Mitchell Moore, 82, Olathe, Kan., died Friday, Jan.
29, 1999, at Villa St. Francis Nursing Home. She was born in Fairfield and
lived in Cedar and Polk counties for a short time. Most of her life was
spent in the Kansas City area. She was a cook and baker at Bethany Medical
Center in Kansas City, Kan., prior to her retirement. She is survived by
three sons, Harry G. Moore and wife, Jolene, Kansas City, Kan.; Donald R.
Moore and wife, Mary Jo, Prairie Village, Kan.; and Boyd A. Moore and
wife, Mary Helen, Ft. Worth, Texas; one daughter, Frances E. Donley of
Kansas City, Kan.; one brother, Victor H. Mitchell and his wife, Frances,
of Clinton; and one sister, Gladys Mae Brown and her husband, Raymond, of
Fair Play; 13 grandchidlren, 12 great-grandchildren, one
great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Services were
Saturday, Jan. 30, at Highland Park Funeral Home in Kansas City, Kan.

Roy Daniel Payne, 73, Springfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in his
home after suffering a massive heart attack. He was born July 23, 1925,
near Van, the son of Richard R. Payne and Rosie Mae Cornelius Payne. Roy
was united in marriage to Erma Faye Manes to July 23, 1942, in Bolivar,
and to this union was born three children, Linda, Bill and James. Roy was
a former stock car driver and loved sports. He retired from MFA in 1981
where he had been employed as a truck driver since the early 1960s.
Suriving are his wife, Erma, of the home; his daughter, Linda Stokes,
Bolivar; two sons, Billy Payne and James R. Payne, both of Springfield;
two sisters, Nina Thirion, Bolivar, and Susie Walks, Minot, N.D; and four
brothers, Bobby Joe Payne and Sindey Payne, both of Bolivar, Ray Gene
Payne, Springfield, and Lyle Dale Payne, Flemington. Also surviving are 15
grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
"Pappy" will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services were
held Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in the Butler Funeral Home Chapel in Bolivar
with the Rev. Neil Graham officiating. Musical soloist was Kimberly
Costello with Rose Roweton as the pianist. Burial was in the Payne
Cemetery at Polk under the direction of the Butler Funeral Home of
Bolivar. Casketbearers were: Doug Marshall, James Endrizzi, Dennis Gaddy,
Jerry Ross, Jody Payne, J.W. Price, Robin Manes, George Smith and Danny
Ross.

Amos Cleo Roberts, 79, Polk, died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in his home
following a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of Polk and Polk
County, born Jan. 8, 1920, to Amos Hall and Martha Pearl Payne Roberts. He
was saved during a revival in September 1933 and joined Mountain View
Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained a member until his death. On
Nov. 16, 1946, he was united in marriage to Willa Mae Kelley, and to this
union three children were born, Leonard Cleo, Linda Vee and Kelley Ray. He
had been a farmer and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He
is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Leonard and Lisa Roberts of
Pittsburg and Kelley and Marla Roberts of Polk; a daughter and son-in-law,
Linda and Jim Collins of Republic; four brothers and three sisters-in-law,
Clifford Roberts of Bolivar, Albert and Jewell Roberts, Leslie and Elta
Roberts and Ester and Nadine Roberts, all of Polk; three sisters, Annie
Walker and Ada Jump, both of Bolivar, and Atha Ragsdale of Kearney; seven
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were Sunday, Jan. 17,
in Pitts Chapel with Bro. Donnie Lightfoot officiating. Burial was in
Payne Cemetery. Music was provided by Shannon Haralson, Darren Haralson
and Jim Collins, accompanied by Craig Sifferman. Pallbearers were Durward
Walker, Denzil Roberts, Donald Jump, Denton Roberts, Glen Roberts and
Garland Roberts.

Michael L. Robison, 59, Humansville, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, in
Citizens Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 19, 1939, in the state of
Indiana. He had been a resident of the Big Spring Care Center in
Humansville since December 1998. There are no known survivors. No services
are planned. Cremation was under the direction of Murray Funeral Home,
Humansville.

Mavourneen Hook Locke Sims, 87, Springfield, went to be with the Lord
Saturday morning, Jan. 30, 1999, at St. John's Regional Health Center
emergency room following a long illness. She was born Oct. 14, 1911, in
Bolivar to Walter and Pearl Brundage Hook. She was united in marriage to
Coy Locke April 8, 1931. He went to be with the Lord Oct. 13, 1976, after
45 years of marriage. To this union were born three daughters who all
survive her. On Feb. 15, 1979, she married Chester Sims, who preceded her
in death April 1, 1988. She lived her entire life in Polk and Greene
counties. She was saved at an early age and was a member of Hamlin
Memorial Baptist Church of Springfield since 1956. She served in many
ministries both at Hamlin and previous churches in Polk County. She worked
as a bookkeeper for many years, including the Polk County Clerk's office,
Bolivar, and 7-Up Bottling Company, Springfield. She is survived by three
daughters and sons-in-law, Leita and Joe Keith of Bolivar, Betty and
Robert Bacon of Hermitage, Carol of the home in Springfield and Bob Cook
of Ozark; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Kathren Keith Jaeger and her
husband, Robert, of Canaan, Conn.; Gary Keith and his wife, Jackie, of
Austin, Texas; Karen Keith Stevens and her husband, Bob, Farmington, N.M.;
Don Keith and his wife, Talva, Broken Arrow, Okla.; Ron Keith and his
wife, Patti, of Frisco, Texas; J.C. Keith and his wife, Elizabeth, Buhler,
Kan.; Roberta Bacon Richey and her husband, Kim, Overland Park, Kan.; Dale

home. The son of Irl and Opal Hicks Snipes, he was born Sept. 2, 1925, at
Woodson, Ark. He joined the U.S. Navy Seabees at the age of 21 years and
served as a petty officer first class carpenter's mate. Following his
discharge, he joined Asbestos Workers Local No. 10 in Little Rock,
retiring in 1987 after 41 years. He was of the Baptist faith. He was
married to Hetty Leona Powell, and they were the parents of two daughters,
Betty Patricia and Donna Jean. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hetty
Leona; a daughter, Donna Jean Jones; and a grandson, Charles Lyndal
Garnett II. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Betty Patricia
and William Charles Garnett; two grandchildren, William Charles Garnett II
and Heather Dawn Jones; and two stepchildren, Bill Henry and Judi Wells.
Graveside services were Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Humansville Cemetery.
Military rites were conducted by Amvets Post No. 114 Honor Guard.

Rosalea Margurette Tuck, 76, Fair Play, passed away at 10:10 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, in her home after a long battle with cancer. She
was born to Richard Earl and Dovey Surface Sargent on Oct. 5, 1922, in
Neck City. She was married to James Charles Tuck on Nov. 19, 1938, in
Pineville. They had four children: Emma Lee, Rosebeth Ludora (Ludy), James
Charles Tuck Jr. and Cletus Margurette. The moved to Arizona in 1946 and
lived there for 42 years. They moved to Fair Play in 1989. She joined the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1957 and had a strong
testimony of the gospel. She always said that joining the church was the
smartest thing she ever did besides marrying Papa. She was a member of the
Bolivar Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is
survived by her husband, James, of the home; three daughters, Emma Lee
Pearce and her husband, James, of Globe, Ariz., Rosebeth (Ludy) Vrondos
and Cletus Vann, both of Fair Play; one son, James Tuck Jr. and his wife,
JoAnne, of Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandsons, James Pearce and James Tuck, both
of the state of Arizona; Jody Tuck Rose, state of Alabama; Lee Vann,
Springfield; Jarrett Vann, state of Idaho; Joe Vann and his wife, Trisha,
Columbia; James, Jason and Justin Vann, all of Fair Play; and four
granddaughters, Tracy Sandoval and her husband, Chuck, state of Arizona;
Jamie Vann, Joplin; Jency Vann and Lara Vann, both of Fair Play. Also
surviving are one step-granddaughter, four step-grandsons, three
great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren and three
step-great-great-grandchildren. She has three surviving brothers, Gene
Sargent and his wife, Georgeann, and Ernest Sargent and his wife, Ailene,
all of Mesa, Ariz., and Carroll Sargent and his wife, Martha, Columbia.
She was greatly loved by her family and friends. She richly blessed the
lives of all those she came in contact with and will be greatly missed.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) in the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bolivar with Bishop Dale Sargent
officiating. Burial will be in Lindley Prairie Cemetery under the
direction of Butler Funeral Home.
