Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser
Mrs. Lena Mary Hamacher, 81, Mary's Home, died Saturday, April 10, 1982,
at Lincoln Manor Nursing Home in Jefferson City. She lived in the
Mary's Home community 58 years.
She was born Dec. 28, 1900, at Hickory Hill to Edward and Anna Thomas
Frank. On Sept. 20, 1921, she was married at Hickory Hill to Fritz
Rudolph Hamacher, who died Jan. 19, 1958. She was a member of Our Lady
of Snows Catholic Church and its Ladies Altar Sodality.
Surviving are two sons, Carlos Hamacher, Jefferson City; and Bill
Hamacher, Holts Summit; a brother, Clarence Frank, Eldon; five sisters,
Mrs. Rose Graham and Mrs. Gertrude Leuthen, both of Eldon, Mrs. Lillian
Miller, Wichita, Kan., Mrs. Cleo Peace, Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. Myrtle
Curty, Eugene; and four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Charley Frank.
The rosary was prayed at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the
Rev. Don Antweiler officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Gunn, 84, Eldon, died Tuesday, April 13, 1982, at Memorial
Hospital in Jefferson City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stuart Schulz
officiating. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial Gardens at Barnett,
under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home.
She was born Aug. 1, 1897, at Ulman to William and Martha Pierce Myers.
In 1962 she was married to Edward G. Gunn, who died Aug 15, 1970. Mrs.
Gunn had lived in Eldon for about 25 years. She was a member of the
Eldon Garden Club and was a charter member of the Bethany Lutheran
Church.
Surviving are one son, Jack Jones, Russellville; two daughters, Mrs. Ed
(Billie) Martin, Sedonia, Ariz.; and Mrs. Eugene (Artie) Lewison, Long
Beach, Calif.; two step-sons, Ed Gunn, Rochester, N.Y. and Greg Gunn,
St. Louis; and eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren.

Wayne Edward Graham, 55, Rte. 4, Eldon, died Monday July 20, 1981, at
Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City. Mr. Graham spent most of his life
in the Etterville community. He was born Aug 18, 1925, at Etterville to
Edgar U. and Birtie Myrtle (Mitchell) Graham. Dec. 20, 1947, he was
married in Jefferson City to Ada Kroeger, who survives at the home.
Mr. Graham farmed and also drove a truck for Prison Industries at
Jefferson City. HE was a member of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church, Eldon
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles at Jefferson
City.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Graham is survived by six sons, Mitchell W.
Graham and Dennis N. Graham, both of Jefferson City, Kerry L. Graham,
Alden, N.Y., Jerry M. Graham, Henley, Randall K. Graham, Etterville, and
Kevin A. Graham, Eldon; two daughters, Mrs. Debra K. Bailey and Sandra
J. Graham, both of Eldon; two brothers, Laddie Graham, Etterville and
Marvin Graham, Thibodaux, La.; six sisters, Mrs. Nellie Henley, Eldon,
Mrs. Margaret Canon, Bakersfiled, Calif., Mrs. Irene Binkley, Eugene,
Mrs. Leda Mathis and Mrs. Jewell Vaden, both of Las Vegas, Nev., and
Mrs. Wilma Luadzers, Cedar City; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon
with the Rev. Robin Sigars officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Mrs. Cora Wetzel, 102 years old of Santa Ana, Calif., a native of Miller
County, died Saturday morning, July 18, 1981. Funeral services were
held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Colonial Chapel, 204 W. 17th St.
Santa Ana, with burial in Melrose Abbey there.
She was born June 5, 1879 at Olean, a daughter of Elijah and Mary
(Atkinson) Miller. Her father was a double cousin of Pinkney Miller,
first male white child born in what is now Miller County. She was
married Oct. 10, 1904 to Arthur Wetzel. They lived in the Mt. Pleasant
community and later operated a dairy in Jefferson City before moving to
California in 1944. Her husband died in 1956.
Mrs. Wetzel leaves three daughters, Mrs. Leona Pearcy of Anaheim,
Calif., and Miss Nellie Wetzel and Miss Maxine Wetzel of the home; one
grandson; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Dollie Taylor
and Mrs. Beulah Eaton of Independence, Missouri

Mrs. Bertie Myrtle Graham, 90, Eugene, died Wednesday, May 6, 1981, at
St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City. She was born Jan. 17, 1891,
in Cole County to Charles Mitchell and Lou Ann Spalding. April 1, 1911,
she was married at Tuscumbia to Edgar V. Graham, who died Jan. 2, 1977.
Mrs. Graham lived in Miller and Cole counties all of her life. She was
a member of the Etterville Christian Church.
Surviving her are six daughters, Mrs. Nellie Henley, Eldon, Mrs.
Margaret Canon, Bakersfield, Calif., Mrs. Irene Binkley, Eugene, Mrs.
Leda Mathis and Mrs. Jewell Vaden, both of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mrs.
Wilma Luadzers, Cedar City; three sons, Wayne Graham and Laddie Graham,
both of Etterville, and Marvin Graham, Thibodaux, La.; and 35
grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Saturday at the Eugene Christian
Church with burial in Eugene Cemetery under the direction of Phillips
Funeral Home. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Mildred E. Bittle, 76, Eugene, died Sunday at her home. She was
born Nov. 5, 1904, at Etterville, a daughter of Jim and Manie Hicks
Bond. Her mother survives at Kansas City. On Dec. 24, 1922, Mrs.
Bittle was married at Etterville to Archie Earl Bittle, who died April
5, 1973. A lifelong resident of Miller County, Mrs. Bittle was a member
of the Eugene Christian Church.
Other survivors include: four sons, Wendell Bittle, Mountain Home,
Ark., Kenneth Bittle, Cabool, Wayne Bittle, New Bloomfield, and Sammy
Bittle, Eldon; two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Jenkins, Tuscumbia, and Mrs.
Ruby Jeffries, Eldon.
A brother, Ivy Bond, Kansas City, Kan.; two sisters, Mrs. Gert Myers,
Lee’s Summit, and Mrs. Leila Stevens, Kansas City; 12 grandchildren, two
great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home,
Eldon, with the Rev. Gilbert Pearson officiating. Burial will be at
Eugene Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Eugene Christian
Church for Mir. Minnie Angeline Henley, 88 of Eugene who died Saturday
night, Oct. 12, 1974, at her home. She was the widow of Jasper Luke
Henley.
Mrs. Henley was a lifelong resident of the Eugene community, and was a
member of the Eugene Christian church and a charter member of the Eugene
Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
She was born Feb. 5, 1886, at Eugene, the daughter of the late Andrew
James and Louisiana A. (Blackburn) Buster. She and Mr. Henley were
married Dec. 21, 1902 near Eugene. He died Jan. 26, 1973.
Mrs. Henley is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Pearl Thompson of Eugene;
two sons, James Earl Henley of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Roy W. Henley
of Jefferson City; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five
great-great-grandchildren.
Officiating ministers at the services Tuesday were the Rev. A. L.
Alexander and Dennis Lewis. Burial was in the Eugene cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon.

Jasper “Luke?Henley, 88, Eugene, died Friday, Jan. 26, 1973, in his
home. Mr. Henley was born March 15, 1844, in Spring Garden to Thomas W.
and Malinda Josephine (Norfleet) Henley. He married Minnie Angeline
Buster on Dec. 12, 1902, near Eugene.
Mr. Henley was a retired farmer and prison guard, and he was a member of
Hickory Hill Lodge 211, AF and AM, and Order of Eastern Star Chapter
386. He lived in the Eugene and Spring Garden community all of his
married life.
Surviving Mr. Henley are: his wife; daughter, Pearl Thompson, Eugene;
sons, James Earl Henley, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Roy W. Henley,
Jefferson City; brothers, Doc Henley and Les Henley, Eugene, and Jim
Henley, Etterville; sister Gertrude Coffman, Springfield, Ore.; six
grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at Eugene Christian Church,
the Rev. A. L. Alexander and the Rev. Dennis Lewis presiding.
Pallbearers included nephews. Burial was in Eugene Cemetery under the
direction of Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon.

Wilda Alma Henley, 82, Rte. 1 Eugene, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1976, at
Charles E. Still Hospital, Jefferson City. Funeral services for Mrs.
Henley were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Spring Garden Baptist Church.
Mrs. Henley, a lifetime resident of the Eugene area, was born Aug. 14,
1893 at Mary’s Home to George Taylor Loveall and Nancy Jane (Johnston)
Loveall. She was married Dec. 8, 1912 at Spring Garden to Lester Wilburn
Henley who survives. Mrs. Henley was a member of the Spring Garden
Church.
In addition to her husband, she leaves two sons, Wilburn Henley, Rolla
and James Paul Henley, Fulton; three daughters, Mrs. Freeman (Sylvia)
Farmer, Jefferson City, Mrs. Robert (Wanda) Davenport, Eldon, and Mrs.
C.E. (Pat) Murphy, Houston, Tex.; a brother, John Loveall, Santa Ana,
Calif.; and 19 grandchildren.
The Rev. Kenneth Carpenter and the Rev. Ferry Cole officiated at the
services. Burial was in the Spring Garden Cemetery. Grandsons were
pallbearers.

Funeral services were held Saturday for Mrs. Homer C. Wright, 66, of
Tuscumbia who died Wednesday, Aug 11, 1976, at the family home there.
She was secretary of the Anchor Milling Co.
Mrs. Wright, the former Lois B. Larson, was born Nov. 17, 1909, at
Highland Park, Ill., the daughter of the late Albert and Francis (Kirby)
Larson. In 1930 she was married to J.W. Kent who died in 1953. On Feb.
25, 1958 she was married to Homer Clay Wright who survives at the home
in Tuscumbia.
Mrs. Wright was a member of the P.E.O., Eldon Chapter 210, Order of the Eastern
Star, and had served as a member of the Thomas Jefferson Library System board. She
also was a member of the Tuscumbia First Christian Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband, are two sons, the Rev. J Bradford Kent,
Hutchison, Kan., and Dr. Calvin A. Kent, Vermillion, S.D.; a brother, Bradford
Larson, Belont, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Wright were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the
Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Eldon. Dr. Ray H. Baker officiated.
Burial was at Maplepark Cemetery, Springfield.

Mrs. Marble Lura Graham, 84, of Eldon died Saturday at St. Mary’s Health
Center. Mrs. Graham was born on Sept. 22, 1894, at Eugene, daughter of
Samuel H. and Lockie Jones Bell. On Feb. 2, 1913, she was married to
E.E. Graham, who died April 14, 1962. She was a member of the White
Church Baptist Church at Kansas City, Kan.
Survivors include: Two daughters, Mrs. Broox M. Means, Eldon, and Mrs.
Bonnie Collet, Kansas City; four sons, Homer Graham, Independence,
Curtis Graham, Kansas City, Kan., S. G. “Jack?Graham, Eldon, and Donald
Graham, Rolla; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Eldon First Baptist
Church, the Rev. Leland Heriford and the Rev. Selby Graham officiating.
Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery under the direction of Phillips
Funeral Home, Eldon.

John Harold Baysinger, 64, Rte. 1, Olean, died Thursday, May 31, 1979,
at his home. Mr. Baysinger, a lifetime resident of the Olean community,
was born Nov. 1, 1914, in Moniteau County to Daniel D. and Elsie Effie
(Hader) Baysinger. Nov. 1, 1941, he was married at DeSoto to Ruby L.
Smith who survives.
Mr. Baysinger worked at the Olean Livestock Co. for 37 years, starting
in 1939 and retiring in July 1978. Mr. Baysinger also farmed.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Larry J. Baysinger,
Russellville; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Perkins, Olean, and Mrs. Martha
Beard, Wichita, Ks.; a granddaughter; and three nephews and a niece.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. Charles Cox officiating. Burial was in the Olean
Cemetery.

John Edgar Dooley, 90, Eldon, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1976. Mr. Dooley
formerly operated a store in Eugene. He was born Sept. 22, 1885, at
Spring Garden to James Nelson and Melinda (Bond) Dooley. He was married
Dec. 15, 1907 at Olean to Elma Ellen Franklin who died June 19, 1964.
After leaving the store at Eugene Mr. Dooley lived on a farm southeast
of Eldon. In 1959 he and his wife moved into Eldon. He was a member of
the Ninth Street Christian Church and a 50-year member of Hickory Hill
Lodge 211, AF & AM. Several nieces and nephews, including Mrs B. H.
Cole of Sedalia, survive him.
Masonic services were conducted by the Hickory Hill Lodge at 8 p.m.
Friday at the Phillips funeral Home of Eldon. Funeral services were
held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Roy Weece will
officiate. Burial was in the Spring Garden Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maude E. Melton, 87, of Rte. 1, Eldon, were
held at 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon. Mrs. Melton
died Friday, Dec. 5, 1975, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Versailles.
She was born Aug. 11, 1888, at Mt. Sterling in Gasconade County, to
Andrew J. and Lula Carver Holloway. She was married Aug. 24, 1905 at
Mt. Sterling to John Edgar Melton who died May 30, 1964.
Mrs. Melton had lived in the Olean, Spring Garden and Eldon communities
during the past 60 years. She was a member of the Christian Church.
Surviving her are a six sons, Carl Melton and Leland Melton, Eldon,
Norman Melton, Olean, Blanton Melton, Jefferson City, Clifford Melton,
Port Angeles, Wash., Lee Melton, Lawrence, Kan., and Claude Melton,
Kearney; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Treva) Ramel, Blue Springs, and Mrs.
Vincent (Reba) Koester, Jefferson City; two brothers, Lloyd Holloway,
Miami, and Delbert Holloway, Great Bend, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. Val
Kallenbach, Tuscumbia, Mrs. Charles Fishburn, Alden, Kan., and Mrs.
Pearl Twyman, Kansas City; and 21 grandchildren and 29
great-grandchildren. The Rev. Roy Weece officiated at the services.
Burial was in the Eldon Cemetery.

Frank Edward Sears, 68, Rte. 3, Eldon, was found dead at his home
Sunday, March 28, 1976. Mr. Sears had lived all his life in the county
and was a farmer. He was born Nov. 19, 1907, at Tuscumbia, to Louis and
Esther Wright Sears. He was not married. Flatwood Baptist Church near
Tuscumbia held his membership.
Surviving him are three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Rohr, Eldon, Mrs. Opal
Palmateer, Montibello, Calif., and Mrs. Essie Peeler, Roseburg, Ore.;
and many nieces and nephews. Five brothers and five sisters preceded
him in death.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Flatwood Baptist
Church with the Rev. Everett Cotton officiating. Burial was in the
Tuscumbia Cemetery under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home of
Eldon.

W. E. Waddell, 88, a lifetime resident of the central Missouri area,
died Sunday, March 18, 1979, at Huntington Beach Convalescent Hospital,
Huntington Beach, Ca. Mr. Waddell and his wife had moved from Eldon in
February.
Mrs. Waddell, the former Florence Slote, survives at Huntington Beach.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Violet Tabor, Mt. Valley, Cal.,
and Mrs. Mildred Martino, West Orange, N.J.; a sister, Mrs. Emma Hunter,
Eldon; and five children and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were conducted by the Rev. Tom Overton at 2 p.m.
Tuesday at the Dilgay Brothers Funeral Home of Huntington Beach. Burial
was in Good Shepherd Cemetery at Huntington Beach.

Mrs. Icie Lee Thompson, 83, Tuscumbia, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 1977, while
at Charles Still Hospital, Jefferson City. She was born Dec. 21, 1893,
in Miller County to Riley and Susann June Burns. June 24, 1917, she was
married at Eldon to Frank L. Thompson, who died Dec. 4, 1946.
In 1947 Mrs. Thompson became Miller County’s first woman deputy sheriff.
She was a member of the Tuscumbia Christian Church and Eldon Chapter
210, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a daughter, Francis Snodgrass, Tuscumbia; and three
grandsons, Thomas, Michael and Kenneth Snodgrass, all of Tuscumbia.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Tuscumbia
Christian Church with the Rev. David Geruin officiating. Burial was in
the Tuscumbia Cemetery under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home.

Word has been received here of the death of a former Eldon resident,
Mrs. Roy Lumpkin, 91 of San Jose, Calif., on Monday, March 12, 1979.
Funeral services and burial were Wednesday, March 14, in San Jose.
Mrs. Lumpkin, the former Birdie Haynes, was a daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. J. J. Haynes of Eldon, and was the last of a family of eight
children in the family. She and Mr. Lumpkin, a clerk with the Rock
Island here, were married in Eldon. They later lived in Kansas City and
Des Moines as well as other points as he was transferred with the
railroad. They moved to the west coast following his retirement. Mr.
Lumpkin preceded his wife in death.
Mrs. Lumpkin leaves two children, Warren Lumpkin and Mrs. Marian
Kershner, both in the state of California. Among other relatives are a
niece, Mrs. Curtis G. Weeks and a nephew, Joel J. Haynes, both of Eldon.

A longtime area resident and former teacher, Amy Ruth Thomson, 81 of
Rte. 1, Barnett, died Friday, Sept. 21, 1984, at Regional Hospital in
Columbia. She was born Nov. 7, 1902, at Stoutland to Henry Francis and
Edna Elizabeth Kissinger. She was married June 14, 1931, in Stoutland
to John Ralph Thomson, who survives at the home.
Mrs. Thomson was a 1921 graduate of Drury College in Springfield. She
taught in the Eldon High School during World War II and also taught at
Stoutland for seven years. She moved to Eldon in 1933 from Fayette.
She and her husband moved to a farm north of Barnett in 1951.
Mrs. Thomson was a member of the Eldon First Christian Church and taught
the Cornerstone Class of that church for more than 40 years. She also
was a member of Chapter CH, P.E.O. In addition to her husband, Mrs.
Thomson is survived by her sister, Goldie Lee Kissinger of Barnett.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. O.D. Johnson officiating, assisted by Rev. Hartford C.
Inlow. Burial was in the Eldon Cemetery.

Ray Peter Wetzel, 66, a former Eldon resident, died suddenly of a heart
attack Saturday afternoon, Jan. 3, 1976, at his home in Salem. He was a
retired Rock Island Railroad engineer, retiring in 19?? After 35 years
with the railroad. Mr. Wetzel was born Oct. 11, 1909, the son of the
late Albert and Lula (Bacon) Wetzel.
Survivors include his wife, Lela of the home in Salem; one daughter,
Mrs. Carl Revens of Kansas City; one granddaughter; two sisters, Mrs.
Carl Graham, Tipton and Mrs. Leo Jones, Eldon; three stepsons and four
stepdaughters.
Funeral services were conducted at the Spencer Funeral Chapel in Salem
at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial was in Cedar Groves Cemetery there.

Gene Burdette Simpson, 52, of Eldon, died early Friday at the Harry S.
Truman Veterans Hospital at Columbia. Mr. Simpson was born Oct. 10,
1923, at Eugene, son of Dolph and Golda Agee Simpson. On April 11,
1953, he was married at Mary’s Home to Patricia Pletzer, who survives at
the home.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Sacred Heart Catholic
Church at Eldon and was the owner and operator of Simpson Radio and TV
at Eldon.
Other survivors include: his mother of Eldon; two sons, Dale Simpson
and Curtiss Simpson, both of the home; four brothers, J.R. Simpson,
Independence, Jewell Simpson, Parkville, Maurice Simpson and Donald
Simpson, both of Eldon; two sisters, Mrs. Wanda Wright, Kansas City
Kan., Mrs. JoAnn Jarrett, Eldon.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Phillips Funeral Home
Chapel at Eldon with Msgr. John Dreisoerner and the Rev. Roy Weece
officiating. Burial will be in the Eldon City Cemetery.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Griswold-Kays
Funeral Home, Eldon, for Mrs. Marjorie Etter, 78, a former resident of
Eldon. Mrs. Etter died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1973, at a nursing home in
Wentzville where she had been for four months. She had been living with
her daughter in O’Fallon since 1971.
Born Oct. 13, 1894, to William and Christina (Findly) Birdsong at
Tuscumbia, she was married to Priest Etter March 28, 1920, at Eldon. He
died Jan. 13, 1972. She spent most of her adult life in the Mt.
Pleasant community.
Surviving Mrs. Etter are a daughter, Mrs. Betty Ann Ferguson, O’Fallon,
a sister, Mrs. Lucy Christison, Santa Paula, Calif.; and five
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with Mr. Raymond Bond officiating.
Pallbearers were Jack Johnston, Cecil Haynes, Clyde Carrender, Richard Dolby, Jack
Dorl and Louis Gerhart.

Samuel H. Wall, 79, of Blacksburg, died Friday, May 19, 2000 at Roanoke
Memorial Hospital. He was born in Blacksburg, Va. on June 18, 1920 to
the late Ivan Cecil and Zora Mae Slusser Wall.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Edna Wall. He is survived by his two
daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis Mae Wall and Phillip Peachey of Blacksburg,
Sandra Wall and James Givens of Lynchburg, two sons and daughter-in-law, Marvin and
Delores B. Wall and Dennis Wall, all of Blacksburg, seven grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 21, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the McCoy
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.C. Wagner officiating. Interment will follow in
Westview Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 1 p.m. and the family will
receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home,

Mrs. Marjorie M. Houston, 73, of 3?8 N. Oak St., Eldon. Mrs. Houston
died Friday, Nov. 16, 1973, at Charles E. Still Hospital, Jefferson
City.
She was born March 9, 1900, in Eugene to John S. and Emma Eksten
Spalding. She was married in 1935 to Robert Roy Houston who died April
23, 1960.
Mrs. Houston had lived in Eldon since 1960. Before coming to Eldon she
lived a number of years in St. Louis. She was a member of the First
Christian Church, Eldon, and the Eldon Royal Neighbors.
Surviving Mrs. Houston are two sisters, Mrs. Marie Crum, Eldon, and Mrs.
Opal Larkin, Jonesboro, Ark.
Burial was in the Eldon Cemetery with the Rev. Walter Simpson
officiating. Pallbearers were Jimmy Jones, Pud Crum, Albert Crum, Jim
Eckenberger, Jim Simpson and Fred Thornbrugh.

Dr. Edward Olney Shelton, 78, of 104 W. Newton St., Eldon, died Monday,
Jan. 18, 1982, at his home. Dr. Shelton had practiced medicine in Eldon
from 1945 until 1977, when he retired.
He was born July 26, 1903, at Gladstone to Edward C. and Wilda
Sydebotham Shelton. March 1, 1933, he was married at Edwardsville,
Ill., to Alberta Downes, who survives.
In 1926 he was graduated from William Jewell College at Liberty. He
attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine, graduating in
1932. Dr. Shelton served an internship at St. John’s Hospital in St.
Louis in1933. From 1942 until 1945, Dr. Shelton was in the U.S. Army
Medical Corps as a major, serving two years overseas in the Pacific
Theater.
Dr. Shelton had been a member of the staff of both ST. Mary’s Health
Center and Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City. He was a member of the
Eldon First Baptist Church, Ionia Lodge 381, AF & AM, the Shrine at
Springfield and the Missouri Medical Association and the American
Medical Association.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Shelton is survived by a daughter, Mrs.
Winston (Cathy) Rutledge, Jefferson City; a son, David E. Shelton,
Rolla; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Catherine) Caldwell, Warrensburg; a
brother, John Shelton, Columbia; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services for Dr. Shelton were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the
Eldon First Baptist Church. Dr. Thomas W. Nelson officiated. Burial
was in the Eldon Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of
Phillips Funeral Home of Eldon.

Webster Valentine Matheis, 84, lifelong resident of the Enon community,
died at Osage Manor Nursing Home, Eldon, on Wednesday, March 3, 1982.
He was born at Enon on Jan. 23, 1898, son of the late Valentine and
Catherine (Huffman) Matheis.
Mr. Matheis was married on Feb. 19, 1925 to the former Miss Florence E.
Lehr, who preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 1968. He had lived and
farmed in the Enon community his entire life, until entering Osage Manor
three years ago. He was a lifelong member of the Enon Baptist Church.
Mr. Matheis leaves three sons, Charles, Larry and Wayne Matheis, all of
Russellville, and six grandsons. He was also preceded in death by six
brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the
Enon Baptist Church with the Rev. William Skelton officiating.
Pallbearers were Herschel Payne, Harold Matheis, Virgil Farris, Venon
Farris, Freeman Kraus, and Gerold Shikles. Interment was in the Enloe

Glover H. Busick, 77, of 611 N. Oak St., Eldon, a lifetime resident of
Miller County, died Monday, April 5, 1982, at the University of Missouri
Medical Center in Columbia. He was born April 8, 1904, near Rocky Mount
to Clinton Leroy and Mollie Ellen (Jobe) Busick.
A retired farmer, he moved to Eldon in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army
during World War II. Mr. Busick was a member of the Eldon IOOF Lodge
and attended the Rocky Mount Baptist Church.
Surviving are a sister, Miss Vera Busick, Eldon, and a foster brother,
Ralph Jobe, Hallsville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at Phillips
Funeral Home in Eldon with the Rev. Daniel M. Duckworth officiating.

Mrs. Gladys Ladene Taylor, 75, of Rte. 1, Barnett, died Thursday, April
1, 1982, at Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City. She was a resident of
t he Barnett area all of her life. She was born March 28, 1907, at
Excelsior, daughter of Hugh Denmer and Gertrude Irene Thompkins Kelsay.
On Jan. 7, 1923, she was married to Thomas Elisha Taylor, who died June
16, 1976.
Mrs. Taylor was a member of the Barnett Union Church, where she attended
services for the past 56 years. As a young girl she was active in the
Hopewell Union church.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Benton Taylor, Barnett, Carl Herbert
Taylor, Sedalia and Myron Leamon Taylor, Springfield; six daughters,
Mrs. Erma Ladean Rains, Gallatin, Mrs. Evelyn Irene Bellamy, Raytown,
Mrs. Carol Sue Enloe and Mrs. Mary Arlene Jones, both of Eldon, Mrs.
Elizabeth Ann Edwards, Clinton, and Mrs. Martha Darlene Stover,
Independence; four sisters, Mrs. Ruby Walker, St. Louis, Mrs. Myrtle
Bennett and Mrs. Bessie Howser, both of Versailles and Mrs. Hazel
Bennett, Smithville; and 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A
granddaughter and a brother preceded her in death.

Mrs. Wilma L. Harbison, 78 Lee’s Summit, a longtime Miller County
resident, died Wednesday, March 31, 1982, at the Independence
Sanitorium. She was born July 23, 1903, at Tuscumbia to James Claude
and Louie Clark Lawson. She was married in 1920 at Tuscumbia to Frank
Harbison, who died Feb. 12, 1982.
Mrs. Harbison was a member of the Tuscumbia Christian Church. For many
years she worked at Glaser Brothers factory in Eldon. She later worked
for many years at Hunphrey’s Hospital in Tuscumbia. She lived in Miller
County until six years ago when she moved to Lee’s Summit.
Surviving are two sons, Lloyd R. (Rex) Harbison, Liberty, and Harley H.
(Hoyt) Harbison, Independence; a sister, Mrs. Jo Louise Pfeifer,
Grandview; and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A son,
Bob Frank Harbison, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Cle Stevens, 93, Olean, died Friday, April 2, 1982, at Convalacare
Nursing Home in California, Mo. She was born Oct. 21, 1888 in High
Point, daughter of John and Florence Smith Robertson. On April 11,
1911, she was married at Spring Garden to Benjamin A. Stevens, who died
Feb. 22, 1957. She was a member of the Spring Garden Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Henry F. Stevens, Santa Barbara, Calif.; Roy
O. Stevens, Clark, and Thomas Edward Stevens, Olean; two daughters, Miss
Alpha Dean Stevens and Mrs. Edna M. Henley, Walnut, Ill.; and four

Mrs. Marion Maude Rush, 86, Fairview Trailer Court, Eldon, died Friday,
June 19, 1981, in Jefferson City. She was born Oct. 14, 1894, at Eugene
to William and Marion Maude Hill. On April 2, 1912, she was married at
Spring Garden to Clarence Henry Rush, who died Nov. 12, 1959.
Mrs. Rush had lived at Eldon since 1918. She was a member of the Eldon
First Christian Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of
Locomotive Train Engineers.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Helen Kilbourn, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.,
and Mrs. Evelyn Kehr, Mansfield, Ohio; a sister, Mrs.Ruth Morman,
Stockman, Calif.; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A son, Earl C. Rush, died Nov. 26, 1980, and a grandson, Richard
Kilbourn, died in 1977.

Mrs. Ella Pearl Schick, 84, of 412 N. Spruce St., Eldon, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1982,
her home. She was born Dec. 226, 1897, at St. Louis, daughter of John A. and Maude
Williams Thompson. On May 17, 1916, she was married in St. Louis to Joseph Arthur
Schick, who died March 4, 1965.
Mrs. Schick moved to Eldon from St. Louis in February 1917. She was a past member
of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees and the Ladies
Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers. She also was a
member of the Eldon First Christian Church.
Surviving are a son, Joseph A. Schick, Eldon; a daughter, Mrs. Irma Burris, Eldon;
two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Lucy Jane Miller Shatzer.
Mrs. Wright was first married to Joseph Ray Vansandt on May 4, 1915. He
preceded her in death on May 8, 1968. She was married to Paul Pittman
(P.P.) Wright on June 16, 1968. He survives at the home.

Mrs. Lela Jane Courtright, 81, Jefferson City, a former Eldon resident,
died Monday, Jan. 4, 1982, at St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson
City. She was born April 14, 1900, at Enon to William and Edna
Thompson. In 1930 she was married to Charles Courtright, who died March
7, 1977.
Mrs. Courtright moved to Eldon in 1959 after living many years in Kansas
City. She moved to Jefferson City in 1978.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Genevieve Mills, Independence, and
Mrs. Violet Gueutal, Osage City; two sons, William Scott, Kansas City,
and Charles Courtright, Highland, Calif.; a step-daughter, Geneva
Courtright, Belle; a step-son, Frank Courtright, Elmwood, Ill.; and nine
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

George Kellious Wright Jr., 43, Rte 1, Tuscumbia, died unexpectedly
Monday, April 13, 1981, at Tuscumbia. HE was born June 26, 1937, at
Kansas City, Kan., to George Kellious and Madeline Reeder Wright. His
mother survives. On Nov. 15, 1969, he was married at Jefferson City to
Marilyn Nichols, who survives at the home.
Mr. Wright worked as a pressman. He had been with the News Tribune in
Jefferson City for 18 years and was a member of the pressman’s union.

In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves two daughters, Debra Diann
Wright and Christine Elaine Wright, both of the home; a son, Douglas

Former area resident, Lee Norfleet, 60 Raytown, died Friday at Research
Hospital, Kansas City, after a month-long illness. He was born Feb. 19,
1920, at Henley, the son of Ralph and Pearl Henley Norfleet. He was
married in August 1954 at Jefferson City to Barbara Dawson, who survives
at the home.
A graduate of Eugene High School, Mr. Norfleet served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II. After leaving the service in 1946, he moved to
Kansas City. At the time of his death, Mr. Norfleet was employed as a
furniture refinisher with Macy’s at Kansas City.
Other survivors include: a son, Don Norfleet, of the home; a daughter,
Miss Lauren Norfleet of the home. Two brothers, Lloyd Norfleet,
Grandview, and Marcus Norfleet, Henley; and three sisters, Mrs. Ann
Ferguson, Jefferson City, Mrs. Hazel Martin, Fort Worth, Texas, and Mrs.
Myrene Benteman, Concordia.
Services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Houser Chapel with

John W. Miller, 79, a native of the Eldon area, died Friday, Sept 25,
1981, at Menorah Medical Center in Kansas City, Mr. Miller had lived in
the Kansas City area for about 30 years. HE was a member of the Mt.
Pleasant Christian Church here. Before retiring he was a bus driver for
the Public Service Bus Co. for more than 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Selma E. Miller of the home, a
daughter, Mrs. Dorothy J. Steele, Independence; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie
Bacon, Eldon and Mrs. Alice Weaver, Sedalia, three grandsons and two
great-granddaughters.

John Thomas Wright, 82, of 319 W. Third St. Eldon, died Saturday, Aug 2,
1980, at Memorial Community Hospital in Jefferson City. Mr. Wright was
born Feb. 15, 1898, in Camden County to George Henry and Katherine Stout
Wright. March 13, 1921, he was married to Alpha Abbot at Brumley. She
survives at the home.
He lived in the Eldon area until 1943 when he moved to Kansas City. He
was in Kansas City until 1953, when he moved to St. Clair County for 20
years. In 1973 he returned to Eldon. Mr. Wright was retired from
Kansas City Structural Steel. He was a member of the Ninth Street
Christian Church in Eldon.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are five daughters, Mrs. Wilford
(Ailene) Currence, Barnett, Mrs. Tom (Glena) Ewing, Spring Hill, Kan.,
Mrs. James (Rosalie) Bradford, Belton, Mrs. Harold (Leta) Grogan,
Dillon, Mont., and Mrs. Jack (Beverly) Cobb, Grandview; a son, John
Thomas Wright, Alameda, Calif.; a brother, George Wright, Eldon; and 21
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Annetta Binkley, 72, Eugene, died Tuesday, April 15, 1980, at the
family home there. She was born Aug. 28, 1907, at Eugene, daughter of
Charley M. and Edna (Jackson) Jenkins. She was married in Jefferson
City to John Logan Binkley who survives at the home.
Mrs. Binkley was a member of the Eugene Christian Church. She had lived
in St. Louis for many years before moving back to Eugene 16 years ago.
In addition to her husband, she also leaves one daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann
Mund of St. Louis; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lucille
Jenkins of Eugene; and Mrs. Myrtle Hartman and Mrs. Georgia Stigall,

City, Kan.

Ezekiel Menzo “E.M.?Sullens, 88, Eldon, died Thursday at Charles E.
Still Hospital. He was born in Olean, Aug. 8, 1892, son of George
Washington and Belle Wright Sullens. On Jan. 12, 1924, at Cottonplant,
Ark., he married Myrtle Marie Starwick , who survives at the home.
Mr. Sullens had been a member of the East Side Assembly of God Church,
Eldon, and was a retired carpenter.
Other survivors include: three daughters, Mrs. Ruby Baysinger, Eldon,
Mrs. Candy Ruiz, Eldon, and Mrs. Marie Belben, Basehor, Kan.; three
sons, Lloyd Sullens, Clifford Sullens, and Dale Sullens, all of Eldon;
nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Fred J. Pryor, 65, Tuscumbia, a businessman in Miller County for more
than 40 years, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1982, at Charles E. Still Hospital
in Jefferson City. Mr. Pryor operated Pryor Novelty, a manufacturer of
wooden novelties, from 1937 until Jan. 1, 1981, when he retired.
He was born Jan. 13, 1916, at Hartville to John N. and Emma Jones Pryor.
His mother survives at Tuscumbia. On Aug. 5, 1939, he was married at
Jefferson City to Lucille H. Whitaker, who survives at the home.
Other survivors include three sons, Max Pryor, Jim Pryor and Tim Pryor,
all of Tuscumbia; a daughter, Mrs. Linda Dinkins, Tuscumbia; a brother,
Harold Pryor, Eldon; and nine grandchildren.

Missouri Medical Center in Columbia after an illness of six months.

Mr. Smith was born Nov. 11, 1914, at Iberia to Henry F. and Sarah E.
(Boyd) Smith. Jan. 31, 1935, he was married at Iberia to Verlie A.
Wyrick, who survives.
He was a retired mechanic, having worked at Fort Leonard Wood. Mr.
Smith was a lifelong member of the Iberia community and attended the
Iberia First Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, Bill Smith, Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter, Mrs.
Peggy Warman, Iberia; a brother, James Smith, Wichita, Kan.; a sister,
Mrs. Idolia Cameron, Killeen, Tex.; and seven grandchildren and three

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First
Christian Church of Eldon for Jack A. Crane, 56, Eldon. Mr. Crane died
at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 1980, at Memorial Hospital, Jefferson City,
after a lengthy illness due to a heart condition. He was born June 28,
1923, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Crane of Eldon.
He graduated from Eldon High School and attended the University of
Missouri-Columbia. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr.
Crane lived in Las Vegas, Nev., for 13 years and in Huntington Beach, Calif., for
four years before returning to Eldon to make his home.
On December 29, 1956, he was married in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Barbara Whaley who
survives at the home in Eldon. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Deborah Humphrey of
Brazito; a son, David Crane, Houma, La.; a stepson, David Whaley, Long Beach,
Calif.; a brother, Charles Crane, and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Simpson, both of Eldon,
and two grandchildren.
Mr. Crane was a member of the First Christian Church of Eldon and of the Eldon Lions
Club. He was formerly project manager, security, at the Atomic Test Site, Las
Vegas, Nev. He returned to Eldon to make his home in 1969; and was employed in the
office of the Missouri Secretary of State in Jefferson City until his retirement
three years ago due to ill health.
At Mr. Crane’s request, his body was donated to the University Medical
Center, Columbia, for medical research. Pastor O.D. Johnson will
conduct the memorial services Saturday morning.

Funeral services for Mrs. Christina F. Jarrett, 69, of 1206 Krauss
Drive, Eldon, will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Mt. Zion
Christian Church near Tuscumbia. Mrs. Jarrett died Saturday, Dec. 27,
1980, at Windsor Estates Nursing Home in Camdenton. She was born May 18,
1911, at Ulman to John Nicholas and Nellie Sooter (Fischer) Jarrett. On
Oct. 27, 1934, she was married to Earl Clarence Jarrett, who died Aug.
1, 1957.
She moved to Eldon from Granite City, Ill., in 1946. Before retiring
she was a cook for the Eldon public schools. She was a member of the
Mt. Zion Christian Church.
Surviving are three sons, Carl Jarrett, Camdenton, Larry Jarrett, Eldon,
and Barry Jarrett, who is with the U.S. Marine Corps in Japan; a
brother, Bryce Fisher, Tuscumbia; a sister, Mrs. Ray (Ialeen) Scott,
Jefferson City; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Jess Knepper will officiate at the services. Nephews will serve as
pallbearers. Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction

Dewey Edward Kallenbach, 82, Tuscumbia, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1981, at
his home. Mr. Kallenbach was a lifelong resident of the Tuscumbia
community. He was born April 4, 1898, at Tuscumbia to J.E. and Hattie
Maylee Kallenbach. On June 5, 1918, he was married at Ulman to Ina
McCommons, who died May 27, 1977.
Mr. Kallenbach attended Tuscumbia High School. For a number of years he
operated an appliance business in Tuscumbia. He was a member of the
board of directors of the Bank of Tuscumbia and was a charter member of
the Tuscumbia Lions Club. He was a member of the Tuscumbia Presbyterian

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. Wayne Cole officiating. Burial was in the Tuscumbia

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home in
Eldon for Walter Rice Harris, 98, of Olean, who died Friday, June 19,
1981, at Columbia. Mr. Harris was born Feb. 21, 1883, at Enon, son of
Southwick S. and Margaret Roark Harris. On Nov. 4, 1933, he was married
to Esta May McMillin, who died Dec. 13, 1960.
For several years Mr. Harris lived in Colorado but he had lived in Olean
since 1933. HE worked as a custodian and farmer and was a member of the
Olean Baptist church.
Nieces and nephews survive.

William Harold Smith, 74 of Versailles, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1980, at
his home. He was born at Tuscumbia on April 1, 1906 a son of Roy and
Ida (Wright) Smith.
Mr. Smith was retired from the Rock Island Railroad Co. He was a member
of the Brotherhood of Railway, Airline & Steamship Clerks, and of the
Versailles First Baptist Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Betty Thiedke, of O’Fallon, Mo.,
three brothers, Walter Smith, Paul Smith and Bryce Smith, all of
Tuscumbia; three sisters, Mrs. Essie Baldwin, Seymour, Mrs. Dean
Thompson, St. Louis, and Mrs. Vivian Carlson, Fallon, Nev.; four
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the First
Baptist Church in Versailles, with the Rev. Joe W. Acuff officiating.
Pallbearers were the Rev. Gerald Hamlett, Lawrence Admire, Kelly Small,
George Bradshaw, John Strouhal, and Forrest Bowling. Interment was in
the Tuscumbia Cemetery under the direction of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral
Home of Versailles.

Mrs. Janet Marlene Salisbury, 43, Rte. 2, Eldon died Wednesday, Feb. 6,
1980, at her home. Her death was attributed to pneumonia. She was born
Aug. 18, 1936, at Jefferson City to Jack and Anna Spalding Myers who
survive at Eldon. On Nov. 20, 1954, she was married at the Eldon First
Christian Church to Howard R. Salisbury, who survives at the home.
Mrs. Salisbury was a graduate of Eldon High School and was a member of
the Eldon First Christian Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by three sons,
Tom Salisbury, Tim Salisbury and Terry Salisbury, all of Eldon; and a
granddaughter, Kristy Lynn Salisbury.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Griswold-Kays Funeral
Home with the Rev. Calvin St. Clair officiating. Burial was in Dooley
Cemetery.

George Kellis Wright, 68, Tuscumbia, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1980 at
Tuscumbia. He was born Jan. 18, 1912, at Tuscumbia to William H. and
Anna Bell (Roach) Wright. July 25, 1936, he was married at Olathe, Ks.,
to Madeline Reeder, who survives.
Mr. Wright worked as a lab technician for Kraft for many years, retiring
in 1974. HE moved to Tuscumbia from Kansas City in 1948.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Wright is survived by a son, George K.
Wright Jr., Tuscumbia; three brothers, Ed Wright, Stover, and Isaac
Wright and Floyd Wright, both of Tuscumbia; a sister, Mrs. Beulah Berry,
Yates Center, Ks.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon with the Rev. Jerry Frye officiating Burial was in the
Tuscumbia Cemetery.

Kenneth Arnold Henley, 59, Jefferson City, died Saturday, Sept. 26,
1981, at Charles E. Still Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr.
Henley was a native of Eugene. He was born March 28, 1922, the son of
the late Arnold Robert (On) and Gladys Buster Henley. Dec. 26, 1944, he
was married at Altus, Okla., to Stella Schulte, who survives at the
home.
During World War II Mr. Henley served with the U.S. Army. He was a
member of St. Peters Catholic Church and the Missouri State Highway
Association. For more than 29 years he was employed by the Missouri
Department of Highway and Transportation District 5 Office. HE was a
senior computer draftsman.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gary Kenneth
Henley, Jefferson City, and Roger Dale Henley, Henley; four
grandchildren; and his father-in-law, Lawrence A. Schulte, Osage Manor,
Eldon.
The rosary was said at Buescher Memorial Home in Jefferson City Monday
evening. Funeral services were held at St. Peters Church at 10 a.m.
Tuesday with the Rev. Kevin Gormley and the Rev. Tom McGrath
officiating. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.

James Earl Thompson, 87, Rte. 1, Tuscumbia, died Sunday, May 18, 1980,
at the Miller County Nursing Home at Tuscumbia. Mr. Thompson was born
April 8, 1893, at Tuscumbia to James Downing and Isabelle Wyckoff
Thompson.
He first was married to Mamie Agnus Roberts on March 26, 1921, at Kansas
City, Kan. She died Nov. 25, 1972. On Oct. 5, 1975, he was married to
Mable Jones, who survives.
In 1927 Mr. Thompson moved back to Tuscumbia from Kansas City. He was a
member of the Saline Valley Church of Christ and Miller County Barracks
1442, Veterans of World War I. He was also a past member of the
American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Mable Jones Thompson, Keokuk, Iowa; five
daughters, Mrs. Elnora Sears, Mrs. Grace Dake and Mrs. Marjorie Bell
Jordan, all of Eldon, Lenora Thompson, Tuscumbia, and Mrs. Francis
Earline Caldwell, Brumley; two sons, Wayne E. Thompson, Eldon , and
Donald Lowell Thompson, Tuscumbia; and 17 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home in
Eldon with Bro. Murl Nash officiating. Burial was in the Tuscumbia
Cemetery. Men from the church served as pallbearers and members of
Barracks 1442 were honorary pallbearers.

A native of Eldon, Clarence M. Plummer, 90, died Wednesday, May 14,
1980, at a Scottsbluff, Neb., nursing home. Funeral services were held
Saturday at Torrington, Wyo. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery at
Torrington with military rites performed by the Travis Snow Post 5 of
the American Legion and the Wyoming National Guard.
He was born Jan. 20, 1890, at Eldon. He grew up and attended school at
Spring Garden before moving to Salina, Kan. in 1915. Mr. Plummer served
the U.S. Navy during World War I and was a member of the Last Man Club,
a World War veterans?group. He was also a member of the Travis Snow
Post. He returned to Salina after the war and then moved to a homestead
southwest of Torrington in 1922. In 1925 he started a tire and battery
shop at Torrington and in 1930 operated a Mobil Oil service station.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Morgan, Grand Junction,
Colo.; brother, Tandy Plummer, Los Angeles; and two grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren

Relatives here received word of the death of Mrs. Helen Swanson, 61, the
wife of a former Miller countian, O. B. Swanson of Fort Worth, Texas.
Mrs. Swanson died in a Fort Worth hospital Thursday, May 22, 1980, five
days after suffering a massive cerebral hemorrhage. She and Mr. Swanson
had observed their ninth wedding anniversary on May 16. Mrs. Swanson
was a member of the Riverside Christian Church in Fort Worth.
In addition to her husband of the home in Fort Worth, she leaves her
mother, Mrs. Reba Earnest of Arlington, Tex., and two aunts in
Grapeland, Tex., and Anaheim, Calif. Relatives in Miller County include
a brother-in-law, Hannis Swanson of Tuscumbia, and a sister-in-law, Mrs.
Eliza Artz of Eldon.
Funeral services were held in Fort Worth on Saturday, May 24, and
services and burial on Sunday, May 25, at Grapeland, her former home.
Missouri relatives were unable to attend the services, but Mr. Swanson’s
sisters, Mrs. Artz and Mrs. Clarice Shaw of Kansas City, and a niece,
Mrs. Geraldine Thomason of Springfield, plan to go to Fort Worth to
visit him in July.

Oliver O. Henley, 82, Kansas City, Kan., died Saturday, May 17, 1980, at
the University of Kansas Medical Center. He was born in Eugene and had
lived in the Kansas City, Kan. area for the past 39 years. Mr. Henley
was a machine operator for the Simmons Mattress Co. for 17 years before
retiring in 1963.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Sylvia E. Henley of the home; three sons,
Vernon Henley, Delmar Henley and Otto Henley, all of Kansas City, Kan.;
two daughters, Mrs. Victoria P. Schreimann and Mrs. Hazel P. Conner,
both of Kansas City, Kan.; three sisters, Mrs. Orpha Buster, Eugene,
Mrs. Ruby Ballard and Miss Jewell Henley, both of Mayflower, Ark.; and
eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Simmons Chapel. Burial was in
Maple Hill Cemetery.

Mary Frances (Francie) Braun, the oldest Miller County resident at age
106, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1982, at Osage Manor Nursing Home in Eldon
where she had been a resident since 1977. She was born Dec. 2, 1875, at
Wardsville to Bernard and Rosena Bruemmer Braun. Most of her life was
spent in the Mary’s Home community. She was a member of Our Lady of
Snows Catholic Church.
Surviving Miss Braun are two nieces, Mrs. Gertrude Schwaller, Mary’s
Home, and Mrs. Rosa Adrian, Jefferson City.
The rosary was prayed at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home in
Eldon. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with
the Rev. Don Antweiler officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Frank James Whittle, 73, of Wichita, Kan., died Oct. 29, 1982, at the
St. Joseph Hospital in Wichita of a heart attack. He was born in Miller
County and was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wright.
His mother died in childbirth.
He attended Tuscumbia schools. Mr. Wright was married to Helen Rodden,
who survives at the home.
Other survivors include one daughter, Betty Dunlap of Wichita; two
half-brothers, Bill Whittle of Senora, Calif., and Bobby Whittle of
Wichita; three half-sisters, Opal Richardson and Lorene Miller of
Blackburn, Okla., and Bethel MacIntosh of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and three
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A son, Donald Whittle and a
daughter, Katherine Mounts, preceded him in death.
Services were held Nov. 1 at the Old Mission Mortuary. Burial was in
the Park Cemetery in Wichita.

Mrs. Carrie Edna Farris, 82, a lifetime resident of the Eldon area, died
Wednesday, April 8, 1981, at Lake of the Ozarks General Hospital in
Osage Beach. She was a resident of Osage Manor Nursing Home in Eldon.
She was born May 25, 1898, at Etterville to Jim and Belle E?? Russell.
Aug. 29, 1916, she was married to Chester Farris who died in 1954. Mrs.
Farris was a member of the Ninth Street Christian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Darlene Palmer, Columbia; a son,
Harry L. Farris, Sedalia; a sister, Mrs. Mable B???, Eldon; and five
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home
with grandsons as pallbearers. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruby Irene McMillin, 73, Olean, died Monday, May 11, 1981, at
Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City where she was being treated fro
injuries she suffered in a traffic accident in Jefferson City last
Thursday.
She was born July 25, 1907, at Olean to John and Kate Slatter Shikles.
June 11, 1933, she was married at Union to Howard McMillin, who
survives.
Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Sowka, Kildeer, Ill., and two
grandchildren. Mrs. McMillin had spent her life in the Olean community.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Phillips
Funeral Home in Eldon with the Rev. David McDowell officiating. Burial
will be in the Olean Cemetery.

Mrs. Clara McComb, 74, a former resident of Iberia, died Tuesday at the
Baptist Home for the Aged in Ironton. She had been a resident of the
home for five years.
Mrs. McComb was born at Eugene on Sept. 26, 1906, daughter of Hansford
O. and Florence Chandler Burks. On April 5, 1959, she was married to
Perry McComb, who died April 14, 1968. She was a member of a Baptist
church and was formerly employed as a switchboard operator.
Survivors include: one step-son, Ray McComb, Tyler, Texas; three
sisters, Mrs. Bessie McComb, Kansas City, Mrs. Dale Hale, Henley, and
Mrs. Opal Sundermeyer, Holts Summit; two brothers, Jason Burks, Iberia,
and Samuel O. Burks, Kansas City, Kan.
The funeral will be conducted ath the Baptist Home for the Aged in
Ironton at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Gayford Lowarance will officiate
with burial in the Baptist Home Cemetery at Ironton.

Robert Lee Keeran, 80, Rte. 2, Eldon, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1982, at
Charles E. Still Hospital in Jefferson City after a long illness. He
was born June 4, 1902, at Sibley to James E. and Nora Meeks Keeran. On
March 8, 1930, he was married at Independence to Pearl Simpson, who
survives.
Mr. Keeran was a retired farmer and had lived in Miller County the past
50 years. He served in the U.S. Army in the 1920s.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Mary Lee
Claypool and Mrs. Elwanda Holloway, both of Eldon; two sons, William E.
Keeran and James G. Keeran, both of Independence; four sisters, Mrs.
Nora Graham, San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Mary Campbell, Oak Grove, Mrs.
Frances McDowell, Roscoe, Mo., and Mrs. Sarah Stanbrough, Oakdale, Ill.;
two brothers, Joe Keeran, Glendale, Calif., and Sam Keeran,
Independence; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Gwendolyn Olivia Gunn Shoemaker, 68, of Rte. 1, Eldon, died Monday, Aug.
18, 1986, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia. She was born Dec. 30,
1917, in Eldon to Sumpter E. and Grace Ella Miller Gunn. On Aug 14,
1937, she was married in Lebanon to Merrel Crane Shoemaker, who died
Jan. 12, 1974.
A lifetime resident of Miller County, Mrs. Shoemaker retired in 1979
from the Miller County office of the Division of Family Services. She
was a lifetime member of the Eldon First Baptist Church and also was a
member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American
Association of Retired Persons. She was one of the founders of the
Meals on Wheels program in Eldon. For the past 20 years she had been
involved in genealogical research.
Surviving her are two daughters, Judy Abbett of Springfield and Nita
Morris of Dalhart, Tex.; a son, Robert Shoemaker of Torrington, Wyo.;
and eight grandchildren.

Leland Otis Mills, 81, of 208 N. Locust St., Eldon, died Thursday, Aug.
14, 1986, at the University of Missouri Health Sciences Center in
Columbia. Mr. Mills was superintendent of School of the Osage for 35
years. He moved to Eldon in 1977.
He was born Oct. 5, 1904, in Edmund, Wisc., to Daniel and Viola Kolb
Mills. On July 7, 1938, he was married in Eldon to Lenah Alice Becker,
who survives at the home.
The Mills family moved from Wisconsin to Bois D’Arc in Greene County in
1910. Mr. Mills was superintendent of schools in Bois D’Arc for eight
years before moving to Lake Ozark in 1935.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State
University and his master’s degree from the University of Missouri. In
1963 he received a Distinguished Service in Education award from Central
Missouri State University in Warrensburg. In 1961 Mr. Mills was
president of the School Administrators of Missouri.
Mr. Mills was a charter member of the Lake Ozark Lions Club but at the
time of his death was a member of the Eldon Lions Club. He also was a
member of the Eldon United Methodist Church, the Jefferson City Masonic
Lodge and the Miller County Historical Society.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two brothers, Orran Mills and
Delbert Mills, both of Bois D’Arc. Funeral services were held at 11
a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Solver
officiating. Burial was in the Eldon.

Eldon, for Mrs. Irene Reid, 66, of 504 E. Fourth ST., Eldon, who died
Saturday, April 13, 1974, at a Kansas City nursing home where she had
been a patient for a month.
She was born July 14, 1907, at Eugene to Isaac A. and Cora Bond Jenkins.
She was married in 1923 to Robert Roy Gosney, who died in January 1953.
On Aug 6, 1953, she was married to Albert John Reid. He died July 6,
1970.
Mrs. Reid was a member of the Eldon Baptist Church and the Auxiliary of
Veterans of World War I Post 1442. She also was a Gold Star War Mother.
She moved to Eldon two years ago from Kansas City where she had lived
for 17 years.
Surviving her are two sons, Robert Gosney, Waterloo, Iowa, and Ralph
Gosney, Walnut Creek, Calif., three daughters, Mrs. Alice Turner and
Mrs. Edith Warren, both of Kansas City, and Mrs. Peggy Wilson,
Independence; three sisters, Mrs. S.W. Roberts, Eugene, Mrs. Edgar
Allen, Eldon, and Mrs. James Albertson, Kansas City; five brothers,
Basil E. Jenkins, Coffeyville, Kan., Tandy A. Jenkins, Pratt, Kan., Earl
A. Jenkins, Kansas City, Kan., Hershel I. Jenkins, Etterville and Robie
G. Jenkins, Kansas City; and 12 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Burial was in the Eugene Cemetery with the Rev. Don Wainwright officiating.

John L. (Jack) Holzhauser, 77, of Jefferson City died Thursday, June 14,
1984, at his home following a lengthy illness. HE was born Feb. 7,
1907, in Miller County, the son of John and Ruby (Norwood) Holzhauser.
He was married Oct. 20, 1932, at Jefferson City to Marie Bell, who
survives of the home.
A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, he graduated from
Eugene High School in 1927. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during
World War II. He was employed as director of food services for the
Missouri Department of Corrections from 1946 until his retirement in
1973. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jefferson City;
the pastors Sunday School Class; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roy
Sone Post 1003.
Other survivors include: one son, James L. Holzhauser of Houston, Tex.;
one sister, Mrs. Lois Sullens of Eugene; two grandchildren, two nieces
and great nephew.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Freeman Chapel in
Jefferson City with the Rev. Donald Gundy officiating. Burial was in
the Spring Garden Cemetery near Eugene. Memorial contributions are
suggested to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
