Obituary: The Eldon Advertiser
Alma D. Smith, 77, of Kaiser died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1987 at her home.
She was born Oct. 10, 1909 in Harrison County, Iowa to George and Mamie
Smith Eledge. She was married on Dec. 23, 1931 to Clarence Carlock, who
died May 22, 1963. On July 16, 1978 she was married in Tuscumbia to Roy
W. Smith who survives at the home.
Mrs. Smith had lived in Miller County for more than 50 years. She was a
member of the Riverview Baptist Church.
Other survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Henson of Galesburg, Ill.,
and Sandra Duncan of Eldon; a son Jerry Carlock of Eldon; 10
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. Jerry Frye officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery
in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Otto E. Whittle, 87, of Brumley died Friday, Dec. 18, 1987 at his home.
He was born Jan 7, 1900 in Iberia to Joseph and Letha Loveall Whittle.
On July 31, 1920 he was married in Tuscumbia to Sarah Ann Stone, who
survives at the home.
Mr. Whittle was owner-operator of the Brumley Tavern for the past 14
years. HE also had owned and operated Long Branch and Hilltop taverns
in the past. HE was a retired carpenter and was a member of the Brumley
Christian Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Elmer Whittle of
Tuscumbia and Bill Whittle of Eldon; three daughters, Vivian Whittle of
Iberia and Pearl Wood and Edna Fletcher, both of Tuscumbia; 18
grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Stevinson-Mossman Funeral Home in
Ieria with the Rev. Jim McGowin officiating. Burial was in Gott
Cemetery.

Homer L. Witt, 70, of 523 E. Fourth St., Eldon, died Tuesday, Nov. 24,
1987 near Eldon. He was born Dec. 15, 1916 in Tuscumbia to William and
Emma Wright Witt. On Nov. 19, 1945 he was married in Aurora Springs to
Edna M. Porter, who survives at the home.
Mr. Witt was a carpenter. He was a lifetime resident of Miller County
and was a member of the Ninth Street Christian church in Eldon. An Army
veteran of World War II, he also was a member of AMVETS, the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Witt is survived by two sons, Gary Lee Witt
of Eldon and Ronald Dale Witt of Kansas City; a daughter, Carolyn Sue
Hager of Eldon; a brother, James Dewey Witt of Sacramento, Calif.; two
sisters, Francis Simpson of Eldon and Mamie Bilyeu of Kaiser; and six
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home in
Eldon wit the Rev. Jim McGowan officiating. Burial was in Greenmore
Memorial Park at Barnett.

Willis A. “Dick” Hamacher, 68, of Eugene died Monday, Oct. 26, 1987 at
the University Hospital and Clinics in Columbia. He was born Oct. 24,
1919 in Mary’s Home to William Otto and Gertrude Matilda Ley Hamacher.
On Dec. 22, 1945 he was married in Eldon to Virginia Mae Spalding, who
died Nov. 27, 1984. On June 28, 1986 he was married in Eldon to Frances
R. Flaugher, who survives.
Mr. Hamacher was a member of the Eastside Assembly of God Church in
Eldon. HE was with the Missouri Department of Corrections for 35 years
prior to his retirement in 1984. He was a lifetime resident of the
Eugene-Mary’s Home area. During World War II Mr. Hamacher served with
the U.S. Army in France, Italy, Sicily, Spain, Morocco, Algeria and
Tunisia.
Surviving in addition to his wife are five daughters, Shirley Hawk of
Ponte Verda Beach, Fla., Ronda Lewis of Tipton, Linda Pletzer and Joyce
Bonnott of Eldon and Gayla Thompson of Jefferson City; a son, Willis
Duane Hamacher of Holts Summit; two brothers, John Hamacher of Olathe,
Kan., and Jim Hamacher of Holts Sjmmit; a sister, Dorothy Mankin of
Holts Summit; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Eastside
Assembly of God in Eldon with the Rev. Buena Alexander officiating.
Burial will be in the Eugene Cemetery under the direction of Philips
Funeral Home of Eldon.

Clarence Shackleford, 72, of Eldon died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1987 at his
home. He was born Aug 17, 1915 in Iberia to Roscoe and Lizzie (Slone)
Shackleford. On Sept. 14, 1972 he was married to Etta Spencer, who
survives at the home. Mr. Shackleford had lived in Eldon since 1972,
moving here from Clarksburg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Sharon Rose of
Marshall and Janet Hardey of Syracuse; a step-daughter, Jean Burnett of
Eldon; three step-sons, Gail Spencer and David Spencer of Eldon and Dale
Spencer of Jefferson City; a sister, Lena Shelton of Iberia; three
brothers, Roy Shackleford and Raymond Shackleford, both of Iberia, and
Withrow Shackleford of Indianapolis, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Griswold-Kays Funeral
Home in Eldon with th Rev. Marvin Witt officiating. Burial was in
Hickman Cemetery near Clarksburg.

Elbert Whittle, 59, Olean, died Tuesday, May 15, 1979, at his home. Mr.
Whittle was a lifetime resident of Olean.
He was born July 7, 1919, at Olean to Lee and Evelonia Selix Whittle.
May 8, 1971, he was married at Lake Ozark to Melba Jenkins, who survives
at the home. Mr. Whittle was self-employed. He was a member of the
Olean Baptist Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Larry Whittle,
Kirksville and Leroy Whittle, Jefferson City; three step-daughters, Mrs.
Freda Garrett, Independence, Mrs. Sandra Luman, Houston, Tex., and Miss
Katherine Jenkins, Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Belleville, Kansas
City, and Mrs. Phyllis Korneman, Independence; two brothers, Lloyd
Whittle, Clinton and Clarence Whittle, Henley; and 17 grand children and
one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Church with the
Rev. David McDowell officiating. Burial will be in Allen Cemetery under
the direction of Griswold Funeral Home of Eldon.

Arthur Joseph Bruns, 82, of Rte. 1, Eldon, died Friday, May 16, 1986, at
St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City. HE was born Sept. 9, 1903,
to Benjamin H. and Mary Catherine Moeller Bruns. On July 15, 1927, he
was married in Tuscumbia to Dorthea D. Bell, who survives.
Mr. Bruns moved to Eldon in 1970. He had been a lead foreman at the
McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft plant in Long Beach, Calif., and retired with
14 years tenure with the company.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bruns is survived by a daughter, Kathryn
Bruns of Eldon; a brother, Clarence A. Bruns of St. Louis; a sister,
Bernadine Kroll of Maryland Heights; three grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev.
Mark Hawkinson officiating. Burial was in the Eldon Cemetery.

Pearl Julia Graham, 80, of Tuscumbia died Sunday, May 11, 1986, at Lake
of the Ozarks General Hospital in Osage Beach of injuries she suffered
in an auto accident earlier in the day. She was born Feb. 13, 1906, in
Eugene to Elmer and Audrie Henley Buster. On Sept. 21, 1921, she was
married in Eugene to John Alexander Graham who died Feb. 8, 1972.
Mrs. Graham lived most of her life in Tuscumbia. She was a member of
the Mt. Zion Christian Church. She had been postmaster at Ulman and for
20 years she was employed with Glaser Brothers in Eldon.
Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Homer (Jerry) Abbett of Eldon and
Mrs. Tom (Nancy) Graves of Iberia; a brother, Monroe Buster of Eldon;
two sisters, Brooks Kallenbach of Eldon and Marcella Matthews of
Independence; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. Charles Worstell and the Rev. Gene Edwards officiating.
Burial was in the Eugene Cemetery.

James Herbert Henley, 62, of Rte. 1, Russellville died Saturday, Aug. 2,
1986, at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Administration Hospital in
Columbia. He was born Dec. 14, 1923, at Eugene to James Alva and Myrtle
Hattie Pierce Henley. He was first married to Nina Helen Vernon, April
7, 1945, in Kansas City, Kan. She died on Sept. 30, 1970. On May 20,
1973, Mr. Henley was married to Alvina “Ollie” Wedwick Smith, who
survives.
Mr. Henley lived in Kansas City for many years, returning to Eldon in
1969. He was a farmer and was a member of the Eldon First Baptist
Church and the American Legion.
In addition to his wife, those surviving include a son, James H. “Happy”
Henley of Eldon; a daughter, Melinda Sue Yeokum of Eldon; three
stepsons, Gerry G. Smith and Ronald L. Smith, both of Russellville, and
Thomas G. Smith of California, Mo.; two step-daughters, Cheryl Eileen
McClintock of O’Fallon and Laurel Ann Fulks of Latham; a brother, Lester
Arnold Henley of Spring Hill, Kan.; two grandchildren and 19
step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home
with R.V. Williams Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Eldon Cemetery
with military graveside rites performed by the VFW-American Legion
mortuary team.

Dean Stone, 63, of Eldon died Friday, Aug. 18, 1989 at his home. He was born June
28, 1926 in Richland to Willis and May Lawrence Stone. On Nov. 12, 1949 he was
married in Tuscumbia to Erma Hicks who survives.
Mr. Stone owned and operated Dean’s Eldon Fina at the corner of Missouri 87 and
Business 54 from 1972 until 1989. He was employed at Wymer Jones Service Station
from 1952 until 1972.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kathy Lupardus of Ulman; two
brothers, Junior Stone of Eldon and Donald Stone of La Bell, Fla.; four sisters,
Mabel Fisk of Pomona, Calif., Bertha Bacon of Versailles and JoAnn Jones and Annie
Lee Stone, both of Eldon.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev.
Jim McGowin officiating. Burial was at Dooley Cemetery near Eldon.

Buell McCubbin, 69, of 500 Dunstan Drive, died Aug 27, 1989 at the VA
Hospital in Columbia. He was born Oct 13, 1919 in Passover, Mo., a son
of James O. and Alta P. Jeffries McCubbin. He married Virginia R. Ray
on May 31, 1949 in Fort Smith, Ark.
Mr. McCubbin was retired from the U.S. Army and the Missouri State
Corrections Department. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a
prisoner of war, and an SFC-E VI. He moved to Eldon in 1963 from Fort
Mead, Md. He was a member of VFW Post No. 2442 and was also a disabled
American war veteran.
Survivors include: his wife, Virginia, of the home; two daughters,
Cheryl Combs of Richmond, Ky., and Carol Carlson of California; one
brother, Burnell McCubbin of Eldon; one sister, June Ahart of Eldon; and
five grandchildren.
A memorial service took place at 1 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist
Church in Eldon with the Rev. Randall Bunch officiating.
The body was cremated. Arrangements were made through the Griswold-Kays Funeral
Home of Eldon.

Wanda Lou Davenport, 64, of Eldon died June 30, 1989 at the Charles E.
Still Hospital in Jefferson City. She was born Aug 7, 1924 in Cole
County, the daughter of Lester and Wilda Loveall Henley. On March 25,
1942, she was married to Robert A. Davenport in Eldon.
Mrs. Davenport was employed as a waitress at Case’s Tower Restaurant in
Lake Ozark. She was also a member of the Spring Garden Baptist Church.
Survivors include: her husband, Robert A. Davenport of the home; five
daughters, Wanda Smith of California, Billie Merriott of Tipton, Linda
Cole of Ludington, Mich., Sylvia Borhn of Eldon and Brenda Scott of
Cleveland, Ind.; two sons, Robert Davenport of Eldon and William “Butch”
Davenport of Eldon; two sisters, Juanita Murphy of Deer Park, Texas, and
Sylvia Farmer of Jefferson City; one brother, James Henley of Fulton; 18
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services took place at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3 at the Phillips
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Carpenter officiating.
Interment was in the Spring Garden Cemetery in Eugene. Memorials are

Daniel E. “Dan” Porter, 76, of Eldon died Tuesday, June 13, 1989 at Lake
of the Ozarks General Hospital in Osage Beach. He was born June 29,
1912 in Pennytown to Charles and Ida Dutcher Porter. On June 29, 1937
he was married in Tuscumbia to Ethel May King who survives at the home.
Mr. Porter was a lifetime Eldon area resident. HE was employed by the city of Eldon
for 33 years.
Other survivors are five sons, Bill Porter, Danny Porter, Charley Porter, Roy Porter
and Donald Porter, all of Eldon; three daughters, Lena Richardson, Ida Polly and
Mary Witten, all of Eldon; a sister, Rosie King of Eldon; 24 grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral
Home with the Rev. Selby Graham officiating. Burial will be in Dooley
Cemetery.

Charles Edward Harrison, 87, of Sedalia died June 3, 1989. He was born
March 28, 1902 in Eldon. On April 16, 1975 he was married to Alice
Knuth Turley, who survives. Mr. Harrison was a farmer.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters, Ruth Duncan of
Barnett, Ruby Tyler of Eugene, Ethel Pendleton of Dixon and Alysie Gier
of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Fred Harrison of LaTour; two sisters, Nellie
Workman and Blanche Whittenburg, both of Eldon; five sons, H. R. Turley
of Kansas City, Timothy Turley of Guntown, Miss., and John Turley and
Alonzo Turley, and A.B. Turley, all of Sedalia; 26 grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 7 at Ewing Funeral Home in Sedalia.

Anna Mabel Martin Heldstab Towle, 78, of Eldon died Monday May 15, 1989
at Baptist Memorial Medical Center in Oklahoma City. She was born June
30, 1910 in Dove to Robert Bert and Anna Gertrude Sells Martin. On Dec.
1, 1928 she was married in Eldon to George R. Heldstab, who died Feb.
22, 1984. On July 8, 1984 she was married in Eldon to Herb Towle who
survives at their home in Follette, Tex.
Mrs. Towle taught school for several years, worked at the Glaser
Brothers Pants Factory for 14 years and then joined the Missouri
Division of Insurance in Jefferson City as a secretary, until her
retirement.
She served on the Miller County Nursing Home Board of Directors for
several years. She was a member of the Ninth Street Christian Church in
Eldon and the Follette (Texas) Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Georgia
Juanita Stowe of Boulder City, Nev., Lillian Gentry of Kansas City and
Nellie Gold of Republic; a sister, Irene McCasland of Eldon; two
brothers, Leonard Martin of Hemet, Calif., and James Martin of San
Diego, Calif; two step-daughters, Donna Marlow of Oklahoma City, Okla.,
and Arlene Woods of Hutchinson, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Ninth Street
Christian Church in Eldon with the Rev. Calvin St. Clair officiating.
Burial will be in Tol Wood Cemetery near Eldon under the direction of
Phillips Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.
Thursday at the funeral home.

Local real estate developer and cattleman Ernie Jones, 73 of 204 Gerhart
Ave., Eldon, died Tuesday, June 2, 1987 at Memorial Community Hospital
in Jefferson City. He was born Sept 19, 1913 in Montreal, Mo. to Daniel
and Dollie Kail Jones. He was married to Ila E. Scott, who survives in
Camdenton.
Mr. Jones moved to Eldon in 1946 where he operated Ernie Jones Auto
Sales, a Chrysler dealership, until he sold the business in 1973. He
had been active in real estate and cattle raising all of his life.
Surviving him are his wife; his step-mother, Lola Jones of Montreal;
three sons, Jack Jones of Eldon, Jim Jones of Ironton and Ronnie Jones
of Jefferson City; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Faye Miller of Camdenton.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral
Home in Eldon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at
Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Graham officiating. Burial
will be in Greenmore Memorial Park at Barnett.

Andy Clifton Workman, 87, of Tuscumbia died Wednesday, July 15, 1987 at
his home. He was born March 30, 1900 in Miller County to Calloway and
Mary Ellen Williamson Workman. On Dec. 11, 1922 he was married in
Miller County to Stella Mae Murray, who died April 1, 1977. In February
of 1982 he was married in Tuscumbia to Vina Shultz, who died in 1985.
Mr. Workman was a lifelong resident of Miller County. He was retired
from the Missouri Highway Department and for 52 years he was a lay
minister in the Pentecostal movement.
Surviving him are a daughter, Irene Hamacher of Tuscumbia; a son, Henry
Paul Workman of Montgomery City; a brother, John Workman of Eldon; six
sisters, Arizona Matthews of Imboden, Ark., Nora Todd of Nelson, Dora
Pope of Kansas City, Mattie Platter of Lake Ozark and Melva Morgan and
Sarah Duncan, both of Eldon; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gateway New Testament
Church near Eldon with the Rev. Russell Hyatt officiating. Burial was
in the Tuscumbia Cemetery with grandchildren as pallbearers.

Funeral services for Okie Cleveland Simpson, 87 of 420 W. 12th ST.
Eldon, were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home. Mr. Simpson
died Friday, July 27, 1979 at Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City.
He was born Jan. 17, 1892, in Miller County to Ben and Nora Jarvas Simpson. Dec.
24, 1912, he was married at West Aurora to Colena B. Hagans, who died May 26, 1975.
Mr. Simpson was a member of the Eldon Ninth Street Christian Church and the Eldon
Lodge, International Order of Odd Fellows. For more than 40 years he worked for the
Rock Island railroad, retiring in 1960 as a carman.
Survivors include two son, Herman Simpson and Herschel Simpson, Kansas City; a
daughter, Mrs. Jean Parkison, Iberia; a brother, Louis B. Simpson, Kansas City; a
sister, Mrs. Dorothy South, Kansas City; and 17 grandchildren, 19
great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Selby Graham and the Rev. Robin Sigars officiated at the services. Burial
was in Eldon Cemetery.

Lyman Henry Wood, 67, of Eldon died Monday, March 21, 1988 at the Harry
S. Truman Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia after a long
illness. Mr. Wood was born March 7, 1921 in Eldon to George and Ethel
Odom Wood. On Aug. 26, 1941 he was married to Effie Abbott, who
survives at the home.
Mr. Wood was a mechanic at Ernie Jones Auto Sales and also had worked
for Bowness Auto Parts. He was a member of the Bagnell Baptist Church.
Surviving him in addition to his wife are two sons, Norman Wood of Avon,
Colo. and Leslie Dale Wood of Cucamonga, Calif.; a daughter, Cleta Sue
Moon of Burleson, Tex.; a sister, Minnie Heldstab of Eldon; eight
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the
Rev. Wendell Estill and the Rev. Jim McGowan officiating. Burial will
be in Tol Wood Cemetery. Visitatio was held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday
at Griswold-Kays Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to Meals
on Wheels.

Hilda May Stark, 49, of Rte. 2, Eldon died Friday, Feb. 12, 1988 at the
University of Missouri Health Sciences Center. She was born Aug. 8,
1938 in Eugene to Leo Edward and Lucille Wright Hager. Her mother
survives at Eugene.
Mrs. Stark was the first female road deputy sheriff in Miller County.
She also had worked as a dispatcher for the sheriff’s department and for
six years was owner-operator of Big Mama’s Hideout in Tuscumbia. She
was a 1955 graduate of Eugene High School. She was also a member of the
Bethany Lutheran Church in Eldon.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a son, Dennis Stark of
Eldon; a daughter, Geraldine Patterson of Tuscumbia; two brothers, Fred
Hager of Eldon and Arthur Hager of Eugene; two sisters, Helen Marshall
of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Barbara Helton of Eldon; five
grandchildren; and a step-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon with the Rev. Ralph Egolf officiating. Burial was in the
Tuscumbia Cemetery.

Sebe Edward Robbins, 75, of near Russellville died Monday, Jan. 18, 1988
at his home. He was born Oct. 8, 1912 in Miller County to Samuel and
Rosalee Lawrence Robbins. On Jan 30, 1937 he was married in Versailles
to Doris Fay Knoch, who survives at the home. Mr. Robbins lived in this
area all of his life.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three daughters, Wanda Enloe of
Eldon, Rosalee Bierbower of Stayton, Oregon, and Vicky b of Hardin, Ky.;
a sister, Vercia McKinley of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a brother, Earl
Robbins of Rocky Mount.
Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Griswold-Kays Funeral
Home in Eldon. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the
funeral home with the Rev. Jasper Hunter officiating. Burial will be in
the Eldon Cemetery.

Mabel Flossie Wall, 73, of Eldon died Monday, Jan. 25, 1988 at Lake of
the Ozarks General Hospital in Osage Beach. She was born July 27, 1914
in Pueblo, Colo., to George and Cordealia Karr. On March 18, 1933 she
was married to Ora P. Wall, who died March 26, 1968.
Mrs. Wall was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. She lived in
Iberia for many years before moving to the North Shore area (Lake of the
Ozarks).
Surviving her are a son, Farris Wall of Montreal; a daughter, Linda Ash,
of Eldon; a sister, Ezmul Wall of Brumley; two brothers, Thursten Karr
of Iberia and Lincoln Karr of Lenexa, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and a
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral
Home in Eldon with Joe Dobson officiating. Burial will be in the Curry

Evalene Lucille Cooper, 62, of Rte. 2 Barnett, died Friday, August 24,
1984, at her home. She was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Miller County to
James Daniel and Helena L. Sidebottom Lehew. On April 21, 1940, she was
married in Eldon to Grant Waldo Cooper, who died Dec. 19, 1970.
Mrs. Cooper worked at Fasco Industries in Eldon. She was a member of
the Full Gospel Faith Center in Eldon. She had lived all her life in
Miller and Morgan counties.
Surviving her are seven sons, Jerry Cooper of Independence, James Cooper
of Grandview, Bob Cooper of Stewardsville, Joe Cooper of Custard, S.D.,
Darrell Cooper and Dany Cooper, both of Eldon, and Terry Cooper of
Barnett; three daughters, Sue Gentry and Kathy Woodward, both of St.
Joseph and Beth Whittle of Barnett; two sisters, Lillian Conner of Eldon
and Treva McMillen of Osage Beach; and 17 grandchildren. One son, Tracy
Dewaine Cooper, died Dec. 18, 1974.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. Jim Metscher officiating. Burial was in Greenmore
Memorial Gardens.

Earl G. “Jack” Dorl, 82, of Eldon died Wednesday, June 14, 1989 at his
home. He was born March 28, 1907 in Etterville to Gottlob and Mary Jane
Graham Dorl. On Oct. 27, 1928 he was married to Dollie Mae Hicks, who
survives.
Mr. Dorl worked for the Dolby Locker Plant in Eldon as a meat processor
for 17 years and was with the Block and Cleaver Locker Plant for nine
and a half years. A lifetime resident of Miller County, he was a member
of the Etterville Christian Church and Modern Woodmen of America. He
served as director and president of the Harbison School Board and served
on the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Board for 45 years. He also farmed and
raised minnows in the Saline Creek area for 50 years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three sisters, Alice Henley of
Jefferson City and Emma Wetzel and Louise Shikles, both of Eldon.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home
of Eldon with the Rev. Jim McGowin and the Rev. Eldon Myers officiating.

Ruby Mae Jones, 73, of Eldon died Friday, June 9, 1989 at Memorial
Community Hospital in Jefferson City. She was born Jan. 19, 1916 in
Etterville to John Edmund and Myrtle Edith Harris Bacon. On May 28,
1934 she was married to Richard V. Jones who died May 30, 1978.
Mrs. Jones lived in the Mt. Pleasant community for many years, moving to
Eldon in 1976. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church,
the VFW Auxiliary and Barnett Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, where
she was a past worthy matron. She was employed as a secretary by the
Miller County Ambulance District.
Surviving Mrs. Jones are two sons, James R. Jones of Eldon and Ricky B.
Jones of Lawton, Okla.; a brother, John Bob Bacon of Richmond, Mich.;
and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mt. Pleasant
Christian Church with the Rev. Jim McGowin officiating. Burial was in
the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery under the direction of Phillips Funeral Home
of Eldon. Eastern Star services were conducted at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at
the funeral home.

Millie E. Hoskins, 90, of Eugene died Thursday, June 1, 1989 at the
University of Missouri Medical Center in Columbia. She was born Aug.
23, 1898 in Miller County to Willard and Lydia Morgan McFall. She was
married to John J. Hoskins, who died February 8, 1955.
Mrs. Hoskins was a lifetime resident of the Eugene community and she
operated a restaurant there for many years. She was a member of the
Spring Valley Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon with the Rev. Cellis Crum officiating. Burial was in the
Eugene Cemetery.

Frederick V. “Val” Kallenbach, 92, of Mexico, Mo. died Thursday, June 8,
1989 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico. He was born Aug. 5, 1896
in Tuscumbia to William and Cora Bell Thompson Kallenbach. On June 27,
1924 he was married to Marcia Alma Thompson, who died Oct. 15, 1965. On
June 16, 1969 he was married in Eldon to Lettie Holloway Jenkins, who
died July 6, 1986.
Mr. Kallenbach worked for Anchor Milling in Tuscumbia and Eugene for
more than 20 years. He was a lumber salesman for several years in
Kansas City for Lloyd St. Claire Lumber Company and during the mid-1940s
he served as the Cole County collector.
He farmed in Miller County for many years. HE was a Navy veteran of
World War I and as a former Post Commander for Eldon VFW Post 2442. He
was a member of the Oak Street Church of Christ in Eldon.
Surviving him are three sons, John Ray Kallenbach of Ashland, Va., Roger
Kallenbach of Cameron and Warren Kallenbach of Palo Alto, Calif.; four
brothers, Forrest Kallenbach of Doniphan, Royal Kallenbach of Eldon,
Harry Kallenbach of Raymore and Dr. G. P. Kallenbach of Mexico, Mo.;
five sisters, Ethel Kallenbach of Etterville, Gola Lee Curtis of
Sedalia, Dean Steenbergen of Jefferson City, Cora Wolverton of Kansas
City and Kathleen Blankenship of Burbank, Calif.; five step-sons, John
D. Jenkins of Garden Grove, Calif., Andrew Jenkins of Henley, Clyde Lee
Jenkins of Tuscumbia, Dr. Tennyson Jenkins of Garden Grove, Calif. and
James C. Jenkins of Eugene; a step-daughter, Lula Fishburn of Haven,
Kan.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Sam F. Pierce, 73, of 316 N. Chestnut ST., Eldon died Monday, June 26,
1989 at St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City. HE was born Jan.
29, 1916 in Miller County to James and Frona Stark Pierce. On Dec. 3,
1944 he was married in Eugene to Stella E. Ekstam, who survives at the
home.
Mr. Pierce was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked as a machine
operator for Allis-Chalmers Combines in Independence before retiring in
1983. He moved to Eldon from Kansas City that year. Mr. Pierce was a
member of the Oak Street Church of Christ in Eldon and the Steel Workers
local in Kansas city.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Dennis Pierce of
Eldon; a brother, Joe Pierce of Independence; two sister, Mae Pauk of
Marthasville and Elsie Ekstam of Eugene; and two granddaughters.

of Christ with Bro. Jim Medlock officiating. Burial will be in the
Eugene Cemetery under the direction of Griswold-Kays Funeral Home of
Eldon.

Orris W. Hoff, 96, of Independence died Monday, March 27, 1989 at
Liberty at the New Mark Care Center. He was born Oct. 22, 1892 in
Eugene to James Robert and Sarah Jane Knisley. On April 2, 1922 he was
married to Bonnie M. Stickney, who died July 29, 1986.
Mr. Hoff lived in the Etterville area many years, in Iberia for 30 years
and at Eldon for three years before moving to Independence two and a
half years ago. HE was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Surviving him are nine daughters, Jewell Upton of Eldon, Leona Beard of
California, Jane Gardner of Minneapolis, Kan., Joan Anderson of
Kingsville, Lizzie Root of Independence, Virginia Killion of Kansas
City, Kan., Maymie Laws of Crocker, Lydia Bunch of Bowling Green and
Janet Johnson of Sedalia; six sons, Orris Hoff Jr. of Pleasant Hill,
James Hoff and George Hoff, both of Independence, Daniel Hoff of Blue
Springs, Harold Hoff of Kansas City and Roland Hoff of Waynesville; two
sisters, Beulah Jones and Mayme Hayes, both of Eldon; a brother, Arlie
Hoff of Pueblo, Colo.; 42 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and
four great-great-grandchildren.

Ethel Thomas, 99, of Henley died Sunday, March 26, 1989 at Jefferson
City Manor Care Center. She was born March 23, 1890 in Spring Garden to
Andrew Johnson and Margaret Susan Carney Bond. On March 27, 1917 she
was married in Kansas City to Gus Thomas, who died Dec. 6, 1946.
Mrs. Thomas lived in the Henley community most of her life. She
operated a store there for many years. She was a member of the Eugene
Christian Church, Eugene Chapter 386, Order of the Eastern Star and the
Spring Valley Extension Club.
Surviving her are a daughter, Margret Jenkins of Henley; a son, Glenn A.
Thomas of Springfield; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

with Eastern Star services at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held

Fred E. Thornbrugh, 89, of Eldon died Friday, Feb. 17, 1989 at Osage
Beach Healthcare Center in Osage Beach. He was a former Eldon
Businessman. He was born Jan 6, 1900 in Butler to William Edgar and
Mattie Huffman Thornbrugh. On Nov. 29, 1928 he was married in Butler to
Louise Anderson, who died April 25, 1982.
Mr. Thornbrugh moved to Eldon from St. Joseph in 1937 and owned and
operated the Western Auto Store in Eldon until he retired in 1970. He
had worked as cashier at Stewarts Restaurant in Lake Ozark for several
years. He was a member of the Eldon First Christian Church and the
Masonic Lodge in Butler.
Surviving him are a son, Charles Thornbrugh of Lake Ozark, and two
grandsons.
Funeral services were held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. Warren Conner officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill
Cemetery at Butler on Tuesday.

Ray Henley, 74, of Olean died Friday, February 17, 1989 at Memorial
Community Hospital in Jefferson City. He was born Nov. 23, 1914 in
Eugene to Mason Otto and Bertha Bontrager Henley. On June 21, 1936 he
was married in Tuscumbia to Edna M. Stevens, who survives at the home.
Mr. Henley was a farmer and had lived in the Spring Garden area for the
past six years. He lived in Illinois for 47 years and was employed by
Kraft Foods of Walnut, Ill. for 16 years. He also had farmed in
Illinois and was a member of the Red Oak Methodist Church, Masons and
Eastern Star in Walnut, Ill.
Other survivors are a daughter, Joyce A. Walker of Prescott, Ariz.; a
half-brother, James Henley of Kansas City; three half sisters, Alma Huff
of Kansas City, Helen Gibson of Eugene and Emma Harney of Springfield,
Oregon; and two grandchildren.

Darrell W. “Red” Whittle, 67, of Eldon died Tuesday, May 16, 1989 at the
Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia. He was born February 11,
1922 in Kaiser to Arlie Everett and Ida Mae Johnston Whittle. On Oct.
26, 1943 he was married to Jewell M. Birdsong, who died March 12, 1973.
Mr. Whittle was a carpenter and worked in bridge construction. He was
an Army veteran of World War II, serving in China and Central Burma. He
was awarded two bronze stars during his service. A lifetime resident of
the Eldon community, he was a member of VFW Post 2442 in Eldon and the
Mt. Zion Christian Church at Tuscumbia.
Surviving him are three sons, Walter Gene Whittle and Darrel W. Whittle
Jr., both of Eldon and Perry Joe Whittle of Kansas City, Kan.; five
daughters, Marilyn Shepherd of Kaiser, Starr Roe and June Dummermuth,
both of Eldon, Lola Abbett of Tuscumbia and Omega Hollandsworth of Linn
Creek; a brother, Lloyd “Pete” Whittle of Eldon; four sisters, Eula Witt
of Tuscumbia, Letha Gentry of Reed Springs, and Omega Baughman and Betty
Parkhurst, both of Eldon; 24 grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mt. Zion Christian
Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Gene Edwards will
officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 2442.

Glen Whittle, 74, of California died Saturday, May 6, 1989 at Memorial
Community Hospital in Jefferson City. He was born Aug. 21, 1914 in
Versailles to Everett and Alpha Ellen Branch Whittle. On April 8, 1965
he was married to Lena Bland Edgar, who survives at the home. Mr.
Whittle was a retired farmer and a member of the Mt. Nebo Full Gospel
Church near Stover.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Whittle is survived by six step-sons,
Donald Edgar of Lamar, George Edgar and David Edgar of Versailles, John
Edgar of Imperial Beach, Calir., Oral Edgar of California and Timmy
Edgar of Latham; four step-daughters, Mable Wiecken of Versailles, Fern
Brown of Higley, Ariz., Naomi Miller of Otterville and Sandra Pike of
Chula Vista, Calif.; three brothers, Vinson Whittle, Melvin Whittle and
Wilford Whittle all of Stover; two sisters, Gertie Dowell of Trenton and
Lula Capps of Stover; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral Home in Versailles with the Rev. Gene Cain officiating. Nephews

The Rev. Earl E. Hoskins Sr., 79, of Rte. 1, Henley, died Thursday,
April 13, 1989 at Charles E. Still Hospital in Jefferson City. He was
born May 16, 1909 at Henley to Frank W. and Cora Belle Belshe Hoskins.
On Dec. 31, 1932 he was married in Jefferson City to Leora M.
Sappenfield, who survives at the home.
Rev. Hoskins was a lifelong resident of Central Missouri. He was an
ordained Baptist minister and served several area churches while also
farming in Cole County. At the time of his death he was a member of the
Hickory Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four sons, Earl E. Hoskins Jr. of
Jefferson City, and Wilburn E. Hoskins, Thomas L. Hoskins and Robert D.
Hoskins Sr., all of Henley; a daughter, Juanita B. Kirchner of Lohman;
two sisters, Bernetta Scruggs of Jefferson City and Mae Belle
Walkenhorst of Lee’s Summit; a brother, John E. Hoskins of Versailles;
13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Frances Fern Duncan, 55, of Brumley died Friday, April 21, 1989 at Lake
of the Ozrks General Hospital in Osage Beach. She was born April 26,
1933 in Brumley to William and Leona Albertson Luttrell. On June 16,
11954 she was married in Eldon to Oleph Duncan, who survives at the
home. Mrs. Duncan lived in Kansas City from 1955 until 1984, when she
moved to the Brumley area.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, William Scott Duncan of
Olathe, Kan., Beverly Jo Choat of Grandview and Sherry Brisbin of Kansas
City; three sisters, Ruby Smith of Brumley, Icel Robinett of Raytown and
Gladys Phillips of Marshalltown, Iowa; and three grandchildren.

Margaret H. Spalding, 76, of Eldon died Wednesday, April 12, 1989 at
Memorial Community Hospital in Jefferson City. She was born Feb. 24,
1913 in Eugene to George W. and Anna Belle Miller Norfleet. On Jan. 3,
1942 she was married in Tuscumbia to Clarence Spalding, who survives at
the home.
Mrs. Spalding lived in the Eldon and Eugene communities all of her life.
She was a member of the Eldon First Christian Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Carlene Dalton of
Eldon, a granddaughter, Jackie Wood of Eugene; two great-grandchildren;
a brother, Elijah Norfleet of Eugene; and three sisters, Marinda Scott
and Ellen Jacobs, both of Eldon, and Mary Bond of Russellville.

Noble W. Upton, 80 of Eldon died Sunday, April 23, 1989 at Lake of the
Ozrks General Hospital. He was born March 11, 1909 in Camden County to
Soloman T. and Lucy Alice Sconce Upton. On July 28, 1928 he was married
in Jefferson City to Pearl Downing, who survives at the home.
Mr. Upton was a retired track foreman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
HE had been with the railroad for 46 years when he retired. He was a
50-year member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Association and
the Aurora Springs Baptist Church. He had lived in the Aurora Springs
community most of his life.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Donald Upton of
Eldon and Samuel T. Upton of Kansas City; three daughters, Rose Marie
Shroyer of Port Hueneme, Calif., Hazel Potts of Eldon and Ruby Fay Parks
of Windsor; a sister, Emeline Teal of Eldon; 19 grandchildren; and 18
great-grandchildren.

Helen A. McDowell, 86, of Eldon died Monday, April 24, 1989 at Eldon
Skilled Care Center. She was born Feb. 23, 1903 at Eldon to Will V. and
Lydia Ann Pierce Waltz. She was married to Graydon McDowell.
Mrs. McDowell lived in Kansas City from 1921 until 1968. She was
employed as a sewing machine operator at Betty Rose Manufacturing prior
to her retirement. She moved back to Eldon in 1968.
Surviving her are a sister, Alverretta Waltz of Eldon; an uncle; and
several cousins.

in Eldon with the Rev. John M. Hayes officiating. Burial was in the

Timothy Craig Benne, 22, of Rte. 1, Eldon died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1986 in
Eldon. HE was born Jan. 14, 1964 in Wichita Falls, Tex. to Vernon David
and Olive Agee Benne. His mother, Mrs. Dick (Olive) Caviness and his
father both survive at Eldon.
Mr. Benne was a 1982 graduate of Eldon High School, where he played on
the football team. He had been with a construction battalion of the U.
S. Navy based at Port Huenema, California. HE had been stationed in
Okinawa. He also was a member of the Eldon First Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Benne is survived by his maternal
grandmother, Mildred Agee of Eldon; a brother, David Benne of McAllen,
Tex.; a half-brother, Ritchie Caviness of Eldon; a half-sister, Shannon
Benne of Abilene, Tex.; and his paternal grandparents, Vernon and
Catherine Benne of Osage Beach.

Norris Waite Jr., 34, of Springfield died Wednesday, March 29, 1989 at
his home. HE was born Feb. 5, 1955 in St. Louis to Norris and Lou
Abbett Waite, who survive at Eldon.
At the time of his death, Mr. Waite was a student at Southwest Missouri
State University in Springfield. He held degrees in chemistry and
biology from Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, the University of
Missouri-Columbia in poultry science and Southwest Missouri State
University in Springfield with a degree in economics and finance. He
was active in the Naval Reserves and had served in the United States
Navy Air Corps. HE was a member of the Eldon First Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a half-brother, Shannon Waite
of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; two sisters, Karen Conover of Jefferson City and
Martha Waite of Springfield; a brother, Mark Waite of San Diego, Calif.;
and his maternal grandmother, Mary Abbett of Eldon.

Rev. James Ryan officiating. Burial was in the Eldon Cemetery.

Lucy J. Gray, 96, of Eugene died Thursday, March 9, 1989 at Boone
Hospital Center in Columbia. She was born Oct. 1, 1892 in Miller County
to Benjamin and Mary Malinda Miller Hinds. In 1910 she was married in
Eugene to Oscar J. Gray, who died in 1943.
Mrs. Gray lived in the Eugene community most of her life and for many
years was a correspondent for the Eldon Advertiser and Miller County
Autogram-Sentinel. She as a member of the Eugene Christian Church and
the Eugene Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a former
member of the Eugene Willing Workers Club.
Surviving her are her daughter-in-law, Rayma Gray Henley of Eldon; two
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren. Her son, James E. Gray, died in 1947.

Ida Agnew, 87 of Washington, D.C. died Sunday March 19, 1989 at
Georgetown Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was born September 29, 1901
in Tuscumbia to John W. and Augusta Buster Agnew.
Miss Agnew was a graduate of Central Missouri State University in
Warrensburg and taught school in Eldon during the 1940s. She worked for
the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines in Washington, D.C. from
1945 until she retired in 1971. She was a member and deaconess emeritus
of the National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.
Surviving her is a sister, Amanda Harmon of Silver Springs, Md., and
nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Tuscumbia
Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald E. Crooks officiating. Visitation was
held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home in Eldon.

Raymond E. Ferguson, 85, of Collinsville, Ill., born October 20, 1920 in
Iberia, Mo., died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Anderson Hospital in
Maryville, Ill.
Mr. Ferguson was a retired switchman for the Terminal Railroad
Association of St. Louis, and was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a
former member of Masonic Lodge 712, in Collinsville; the Scottish Rite
Bodies, and Ainad Shrine Legion of Honor. He was a past associate
guardian of Job's Daughters, Bethel #42, and past chapter advisor of
Ascalon Chapter Order of Demolay.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Rose (Swigert) Ferguson -
his first wife, Marjorie L. (Bennett) Fuller - his parents, Sherman R.
and Maggie E. (Slawson) Ferguson - two brothers, Lowell, and Robert
Ferguson, and a sister, Phoebe Knecht.
Surviving are three daughters and three sons. They are Judy Commire &
husband, Bob, of Sebring, Fla; Janet Bright and husband Jim, of Excelsior
Springs, Mo; Ed Ferguson & wife Lynn, of E. Falmouth, Mass.; Danny
Ferguson of Westland, Mich.; Mary Humphrey & husband Gary,of
Colliinsville, Ill., and Alan Ferguson of Monticello, Wis. Two sisters:
Dorothy Aldridge of Fairview Heights, Ill., and Ruth Hayes of Thayer, MO.
One brother: Ralph Ferguson, of Joplin, MO. A step-daughter Linda
Fleming & husband Paul, of Hamel, Ill., a step-son Paul Bilyeu & wife
Jane, of Casselberry, Fla. A special friend, Emma Kamm, of Collinsville,
Ill. Nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces
and nephews.

Kenneth C. Brumley, 69, Eugene, died Friday at Miller County Nursing Home,
Tuscumbia. He was born June 27, 1922, at Iberia, a son of Charlie and Grace
Patterson Brumley. His mother, Grace Cardwell, survives at Eldon.
A farm laborer, he was a lifelong resident of the Eldon community prior to
moving to Eugene earlier this year. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II,
and a life member of VFW Post 2442, Eldon.
Other survivors include: two sisters, Rita Stigall, Eugene, and Barbara
Hutchison, Jefferson City; and two brothers, Jim Cardwell, Eldon, and Cance
Cardwell, Jefferson City.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon, with the Rev.
Gene Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Gott Cemetery, Ulman, with military

Bonnie Marjorie Hoff, 78 of 103 D Willow Creek Apartments, Eldon, died
Tuesday, July 29, 1986, at St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City.
She was born Aug. 9, 1907, in Eldon to George and Sarah Jane Hicks
Stickney. On April 2, 1922, she was married to Orris W. Hoff, who
survives at the home.
Mrs. Hoff lived in the Etterville community for many years and in Iberia
for 30 years. She had lived in Eldon for the past three years. She was
a member of the Assembly of God Church.
In addition to her husband she is survived by nine daughters, Jewell
Upton of Eldon, Leona Beard of California, Mo., Jane Gardner of
Minneapolis, Kan., Jean Anderson of Kingsville, Lizzie Root of
Independence, Virginia Killion of Kansas City, Kan., Marjorie Laws of
Crocker, Lydia Bunch of Bowling Green and Janet Johnson of Sedalia; six
sons, Orris Hoff Jr. of Pleasant Hill, James Hoff and George Hoff of

A longtime resident of Eldon and native of the Eugene area, Nile K.
Wright, 78, of 104 Autry Ave., Eldon, died Thursday, June 23, 1983, at a
Jefferson City hospital. Mr. Wright was born April 23, 1905, at Eugene
to Joseph L. and Lena Simpson. On April 23, 1927, he was married to
Blanche McDonald, who survives.
He moved to Eldon in 1967 after retiring from Western Union in Chicago
after 43 years with the company. He was a maintenance supervisor. Mr.
Wright was a graduate of Tuscumbia High School. He also was a member of
the Eldon First Christian Church.
In addition to his wife of the home, Mr. Wright is survived by a son,
Keith L. Wright of Hibbing, Minnesota; a sister, Maude Wright of Eldon;
and two grandchildren, Karyn and Kristopher.

Earl Witten, 78, of Rte. 4, Eldon died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1987 at his
home. HEewas born May 20, 1908 in Etterville to Elgan and Florence
Mitchell Witten. On Oct. 19, 1945 he was married in Kansas City to Lucy
Lasswell who survives at the home. Mr. Witten was a lifetime resident
of Miller County and was a retired sawmill worker. He was an Army
veteran of World War II.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Earl Witten and
Lester Scott, both of Eldon; a daughter, Norma Phillips of Eldon; a
sister, Bertie Belt of Eugene; and three grandchildren.

Robert Melvin Witten, 67, of 503 E. Fourth St., Eldon, died Sunday, Feb.
17, 1985, at his home. He was born Nov. 8, 1917, in Eugene to James and
Barbara Johnston Witten. On March 25, 1948, he was married in Tuscumbia
to Opal O Wyrick, who survives at the home.
Mr. Witten was a member of the Old Path Baptist Church. He lived in
Kansas City for 45 years and worked for Frank Purcell Lumber Co. there
for 32 years. He moved to Eldon in 1980.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Tom Tillery of
Youngstown, Ohio, and Robert James Witten of Kansas City, Kan.; two
daughters, Carolyn Sears of Kansas City, Kan., and Sue Kaiser of Eldon;
and two sisters, Sylvia Walker of Kansas City, Kan., and Goldie Grant of

Lucy M. Witten, 74, of Rte. 4, Eldon died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1987 at
Charles E. Still Hospital in Jefferson City. She was born Feb. 3, 1913
in Miller County to Samuel and Emmaline Rogers Lasswell. In December,
1934 she was married to Allee Scott, who died Aug. 5, 1941. On Oct. 19,
1945 she was married to Earl Witten, who died Jan. 18, 1987. Mrs.
Witten was a lifetime resident of the Eldon area and was a member of the
Glenwood Baptist Church.
Surviving her are two sons, Lester Scott and Earl Stanley Witten of
Eldon; a daughter, Norma Phillips of Eldon; a brother, Chester Lasswell
of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three grandchildren.

Alvin H. Pletzer, 58, of Eldon died Wednesday, July 23, 1986, at Memorial Hospital
in Jefferson City. He was born July 2, 1928, in Mary’s Home to Jay and Ruby Stout
Pletzer. On June 19, 1954, he was married in Eldon to Marcella Wood, who survives
at the home.
Mr. Pletzer was owner of his own plumbing service and also was a member
of Plumbers Local 36 in Jefferson City and Local 562 in St. Louis. He
was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Eldon VFW
Post 2442. He lived most of his life in Eldon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Larry Pletzer and
J.C. Pletzer, both of Eldon; and two sisters, Pat Simpson of Eldon and
Jerry Pletzer of Osage Beach.
Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 1986, at the
Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. James O’Sullivan officiating.

Wayne Vencil Spalding, 63, of Rte. 5, Eldon, died Sunday, Sept. 14,
1986, at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Administration Hospital in
Columbia. He was born June 9, 1923, in Eugene to William S. and Martha
J. Roberts Spalding. He was a lifetime resident of Miller and Cole
counties.
Mr. Spalding first was married to Ruby Wickham in December 1945. She
died in October, 1963. On Oct. 25, 1964, Mr. Spalding was married to
Delpha Clark, who survives at the home. He was a poultry man and was a
member of the Eldon First Assembly of God Church and the Disabled
American Veterans.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Spalding is survived by three sons, David
Spalding and Shawn Spalding, both of Eldon, and Rusty Nicholson of
Panama City, Fla.; five daughters, Debbie Trusley, Tina Spalding,
Shannon Spalding and Shawndra Spalding, all of Eldon, and Donna Wood of
Rocky Mount; a brother, Warren Spalding of Eldon; and four
granddaughters.

Letha J. “Sally” Golden, 74, of Rte. 4, Eldon, died Friday, Sept. 18,
1987 in a traffic accident on U.S. 54 at Route M in Eldon. She was born
June 26, 1913 in Enid, Mo. to June Murray and Ella Velena Epperson
Stidham. On September 4, 1937 she was married in Tusucumbia to Lawrence
W. Golden, who survives at the home.
Mrs. Golden was a member of the Etterville Christian Church and Eldon
VFW Post 2442 Women’s Auxiliary. She was a St. Louis resident for 34
years, moving to the Eldon area in 1971.
Surviving her, in addition to her husband, are two sisters, Ruby Baise
of Jefferson City and Rose Sartin of Fort Scott, Kan.; and a brother,
Garnett Stidham of Jefferson City.

Roy Carmine Madole, 66, of 312 N. Olive, Eldon died in Eldon Tuesday,
Sept. 22, 1987. He was born Nov. 7, 1920 in Eldon to Roy D. and Jewell
Etter Madole. On Dec. 26, 1914 he was married in Tuscumbia to Ina F.
Hall, who survives at the home. Mr. Madole was an excavation contractor
in Eldon. He had served in the Army Air Corps for four years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Linda Brockman of Lake
Ozark; a brother, Robert L. Madole in Ormond Beach, Fla.; and two
grandsons, Brian and Wade Brockman.

Bert J. Apperson, 88, of Rte. 1, Russellville died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1987
at Russellville. He was born June 4, 1899 in Miller County to John and
Lou Brown Apperson. On Sept. 27, 1937 he was married in Versailles to
Margie Davenport, who survives him.
Mr. Apperson was a lifetime Eldon area resident. He was employed with
the Rock Island Railroad as a section crew member for many years. He
also was employed with Kraft Foods in Eldon and with the Eldon School
District, serving as a bus driver and custodian until his retirement.
Other survivors include two daughters, Ruth Madalon of St. Louis and
Donna Alieksaites of Russellville; two sons, Jack Apperson of
Russellville and Ralph Apperson of Eldon; 10 grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.

A lifetime resident of the Eldon area, Cecil Louie Apperson, 78 of Rte
3, Eldon, died Saturday, March 5, 1983 at his home in the Saline Creek
area. Mr. Apperson was born July 17, 1904 at Eldon to Thomas Henry and
Eva Jane Hicks Apperson. On May 5, 1928 he was married at California,
Mo., to Beulah Ann Cantwell, who survives. Mr. Apperson was a farmer.

and Darrell Apperson, both of Eldon; a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Fisher of

Alfred Herman Hake, 51, of Rte. 1, Eugene, died Sunday, Marc 6, 1983 at
Charles E. Still Hospital (Jefferson City). He was born Nov. 25, 1931
at Mary’s Home, son of Albert and Margaret Berendzen Hake. His parents
survive at Mary’s Home. On Feb. 16, 1957 he was married at St. Anthony
to Cordula Evers, who survives at the home.
Mr. Hake retired in 1979 from the Missouri State Highway Department
where he worked in maintenance and traffic. HE had worked for the
department for 28 years. He was vice president of the Miller County Fox
hunters Association and was a member of the VFW. He served in the U.S.
Army during the Korean Conflict.
Also surviving him are a daughter, Karla Hake of the home; two sons,
Alan Hake and Charles Hake, also of the home; and a sister, Anna Marie
Lepper of Mary’s Home.

Lena May Perkey, 94, of Olean died Friday, Aug. 8, 1986, at the Nevada
City Hospital in Nevada, Mo. She was born Nov. 2, 1891, in Cedar County
to John Benton and Matilda Fellpot. She was married on Sept 9, 1909, in
Nevada, to William Perkey, who died June 25, 1954. Mrs. Perkey moved to
Olean in 1969. She was a member of the Olean Baptist Church.
Surviving her are three sons, Charlie Perkey of Mexico, Mo., Kelder
Perkey of Rich Hill and Herbert Perkey of Nevada, Mo.; six daughters,
Martha Perkey of Nevada, Mo., Edith Schmidt of Stockton, Bernice Lanning

Alonzo Simpson, 89, died Monday at his home at 212 West Twelfth St., in
Eldon. A native of Miller County, he was born April 1, 1877, to James
and Ann (Davidson) Simpson. On April 10, 1898, Mr. Simpson married Eva
May Witten who died April 7, 1958. Mr. Simpson, a member of the Ninth
Street Christian Church, had lived in Eldon since 1949.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Keeran of Eldon; three sons, Dolph
and Carl, both of Eldon, and Louie of Show Low, Ariz.; four sisters,
Mrs. Lena Wright of Barnett, Mrs. Leannah Cox of Kansas City, Mrs. Nancy
Malone of Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Miss Blanche Simpson of Rocky
Ford, Colo.; 23 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.

Mason Otto (Doc) Henley, 96, Rte. 1, Eugene, died Wednesday, Jan. 27,
1982 at his home. He was born Oct. 20, 1885, at Eugene to Thomas and
Malinda Norfleet Henley.
He first was married to Mel Franklin and later to Bertha Bontrager, both
of whom preceded him in death. On Jan. 2, 1919, he was married in
California, Mo., to Marie Sophia Kubil, who died Nov. 11, 1975. Mr.
Henley lived in Miller County all of his life and had been a farmer. HE
was a member of the Spring Garden Baptist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Emma Harney, Springfield, Oregon,
Mrs. Helen Gibson, Eugene, and Mrs. Alma Huff, Kansas City; two sons,
Ray Henley, Walnut, Ill., and James Henley, Kansas City; a brother,
Lester Henley, Jefferson City; and eight grandchildren, 16

Herbert W. Bunch, 93, of Rte. 2, Eldon died Monday, July 25, 1988 at
Harry S. Truman Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia. He was
born July 11, 1895 in Miller County to Thomas J. and Florence H. Holder
Bunch. On April 21, 1923 he was married in Tuscumbia to Edith Beard,
who survives him.
Mr. Bunch was a retired farmer and was a deacon at the Blue Springs
Baptist Church. During World War I he served with the U.S. Army in
France for more than 16 months.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bunch is survived by two daughters, Faye
Conners and Mildred Polly, both of Eldon; three sisters, Lois Greenup
and Naomi Crum, both of Eldon, and Virgie Bowlin of Lone Jack; six
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Beach Health Care Center. She was born Aug. 2, 1913 in Iberia to Arlie

Crocker to Lloyd V. Birdsong who survives.
Mrs. Birdsong was a lifetime resident of Miller County. She was a

Mrs. Acock is survived by four sisters, Mary Dalton of Versailles,

Ralph L. Spalding, 77, of Eldon died Sept 22, 1988 at his home in Eldon.
HE was born in Etterville on Feb. 19, 1911 the son of William G. and
Alice L. Bell Spalding. On Aug. 22, 1948, he was married to Betty
Bowden who died on Nov. 6, 1972.
Mr. Spalding was self-employed as a plumber and a sheet metal worker.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Eldon and a lifetime
resident of the Eldon community.
Survivors include: one son, David Spalding of Eldon; one daughter, Jane
Spalding of Springfield; one brother, Clarence Spalding of Eldon; one
sister, Phillipean Spalding of Eldon; and two grandchildren, Melissa
Spalding and Melanie Spalding.

Opal L. Chapman, 64, of 607 S. Chestnut St., Eldon, died Saturday, June
11, 1988 at Memorial Community Hospital in Jefferson City. She was born
March 21, 1924 in Conway to Porter Charles and Elizabeth Irene Willard
Weaver. On Aug 14, 1942 she was married in Springfield to Fred L.
Chapman, who survives at the home.
Mrs. Chapman was a member of the Fundamental Baptist Church in Ash Grove
and the VFW Auxiliary in Eldon. She moved to Eldon from Ash Grove in
1964.
Other survivors are her mother, Elizabeth Watts of Ash Grove, four
daughters, Katherine Arleen Ault, Sheran Jean Webb and Juanita Faye
Lang, all of Eldon and Debbie Elizabeth Honeycutt of Springfield; four
brothers, Edward Weaver and Floyd Weaver, both of Ash Grove, and Bill
Weaver and Gene Weaver, both of Walnut Grove; three sisters, Faye
Siebert of Rolla, Maxine Hayes of Ash Grove and Kay Cameron of
Springfield; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon with the Rev. Danny Fox officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn
Cemetery at Walnut Grove.

Doris M. Denman, 62, of Rte. 3, Eldon died Sunday, Aug. 21, 1988 at
Ellis Fischell Research Hospital in Columbia. She as born Jan 30, 1926
in Union County, Iowa to Blaine and Fannie Priest Garrett.
Mrs. Denman owned and operated Doris Truck Stop near Eldon for 17 years.
She moved to Eldon from Arkansas 45 years ago. She was a member of the
Eldon Ninth Street Christian Church and the Auxiliary of VFW Post 2442.
Surviving her are her father of Sedalia; two sons, Eugene Denman and
David Denman, both of Trona, Calif.; a daughter, Deloris H. Hubner of
Eldon; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Griswold-Kays Funeral
Home with the Rev. Mike Dumler officiating. Burial was in the Eldon
Cemetery.

Bertie M. James, 93, a longtime resident of the Eldon community died
June 10, 1988 at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Versailles. She was
born Nov. 18, 1894 in Etterville, the daughter of James R. Hoff and Sara
Kneisley. On Aug 12, 1915, she married John Herman James in Aurora
Springs. He preceded her in death in 1966.
Mrs. James was a charter member of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church
which is now the Eldon Christian Church. She was the owner of the
Aurora Springs Market from 1944 to 1966. Upon the death of her husband,
she moved to Independence and had lived there for many years.
Survivors include two sisters, Beulah Jones and Maymie Hayes both of
Eldon; and two brothers, Orris Hoff of Liberty and Arlie Hoff of Pueblo,
Colo.
Visitation was held last Saturday, June 11 at the Griswold-Kayes Funeral
Home in Eldon. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, June 12,
1988 at the Griswold-Kayes Chapel, with the Rev. Selby Graham
officiating. Burial was in the Eldon City Cemetery.

Albert Franklin Byrd, 87, of Brumley died Saturday, June 18, 1988 at
Lake of the Ozarks General Hospital in Osage Beach. HE was born Aug 7,
1900 at Kaiser to James R. and Matilda Reed Byrd. On Oct. 17, 1928 he
was married in Linn Creek to Edna Rena Brown, who survives.
Mr. Byrd was a lifetime resident of Miller County and was a retired
farmer. HE was a member of the New Hope Freewill Baptist Church at
Kaiser.
Surviving in addition to his mother are seven sons, Lloyd Byrd of Eldon,
Alfred Byrd of Dallas, Tex., Willie Byrd and Ralph Byrd, both of Kaiser,
Rufus Byrd of Playas, N.M., Edgar Byrd of Ulman and Claud Byrd of
Brumley; three daughters, Ruby Otto of Brumley, Roma Bond of Eldon and
Peggy McDowell of Iberia; 27 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Two grandsons preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stevinson-Mossman
Funeral Home in Iberia with Bro. Gene Edwards officiating. Burial was
in New Hope Cemetery.

Eunice G. Spalding, 95, of Wichita, Kan., died on April 7, 1988 at
Terrace Gardens Nursing Home in Wichita. She was born Aug 10, 1892 near
Lebanon to Tom and Kate Spalding, who spent many years in the Miller
County area near Eugene. While living near Eugene, Miss Spalding joined
the First Christian Church there and was baptized in the Ritchie pond.
She was a half-sister of Dell Spalding, a longtime resident of Eldon.
Miss Spalding went to Kansas to work in the 1920’s and except for a
couple of years during the early 1030s she lived most of her adult life
there. From 1923 until 1961 she as a housekeeper for Harvey and Rachel
Grace. She moved to an apartment at Terrace Gardens in 1979. Miss
Spalding was a member of Riverside Christian Church in Wichita and was
an honorary deaconess there.
Surviving are her two sisters, Jane Spain of Methodist Manor in
Marionville and Tirzah (Mrs. Wayne) Spalding Wright of Aurora; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held April 11 at Culbertson Funeral Home in
Wichita with Dr. Bob Ely officiating. Burial was in the Old Mission
Mausoleum in Wichita.

James Cecil Haynes, 83, of Raytown died Tuesday, April 26, 1988 at
Research Medical Center in Kansas City. He was born March 14, 1905 in
Eldon to Martin M. and Sarah C. Johnston Haynes. On Oct. 12, 1924 he
was married in Tuscumbia to Luella Broox Etter, who survives in Kansas
City.
Mr. Haynes was a retired die caster. He had worked for Ruperty Die
Casting. He lived in the Kansas City area for many years. He was a
member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Muriel L.
Morrison of Kansas City; a son, James J. Haynes of Foster City, Calif.;
a sister, Nell Adams of St. Louis; six grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon with the Rev. Jim McGowin officiating. Burial will be in the
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Eldon.

Lettie Louisa Kallenbach, 88, of the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico,
Mo., died Saturday, July 5, 1986 at the Audrain County Medical Center.
She was born March 10, 1898, in Mt. Sterling to Andrew Jackson and Mary
Lorinda Carver Holloway. On Oct. 13, 1913, she was married at Spring
Garden to Ingram Dwight Jenkins, who died Sept 14, 1968. On June 16,
1969, she was married in Eldon to F.V. “Val” Kallenbach, who survives.
Mrs. Kallenbach lived in the Tuscumbia-Eugene area most of her life,
moving to Mexico in August 1985. She was a member of the Oak Street
Church of Christ in Eldon.
In addition to her husband she is survived by five sons, John D. Jenkins
and Dr. Tennyson Jenkins of Garden Grove, Calif., Andrew Jenkins of
Henley, Clyde Lee Jenkins of Tuscumbia and James C. Jenkins of Eugene; a
daughter, Lila Fishburn of Haven, Kan.; two sisters, Clara Fishburn of
Alden, Kan., and Pearl Twyman of Overland Park, Kan.; three step-sons,
Dr. Warren Kallenbach of Palo Alto, Calif., Roger V. Kallenbach of
Cameron and John Ray Kallenbach of Richmond, Va.; 22 grandchildren; 19
great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home
with the Rev. Danny Fox officiating. Burial was in the Spring Garden
Cemetery.

Earl L. Simpson, 62, died Aug. 5, 1981, at Kansas City. He was born at
Eugene on Feb. 15, 1919, to Elias and Rachel Buster Simpson. He was
raised in the Eugene community.
In 1960 he was married at Miami, Okla., to Margaret Sue Mills, who
survives. He also leaves a brother, Roy Simpson, Eugene; and three
sisters, Tina Binkley, Eldon and Rosa Crumpley and Alice Jenkins, Kansas
City.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Patton Funeral Home in Huntsville.
Burial was in Huntsville.

Randall Joel Simpson of Kansas City, son of a former area resident, died
Saturday, Dec. 7, 1985, while he and a companion were repairing a tire
and were struck by another car. He is survived by his wife, Jan, and
two sons; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Simpson of Parkville. The
elder Mr. Simpson was born and raised in Eldon and was the son of the
late Dolph and Golda Simpson of Eldon.
Several members of the Simpson family from Eldon, Jefferson City and
Columbia attended memorial services Tuesday at Mt. Moriah Funeral Home
in Kansas City.

A nearly lifetime resident of the Eldon area, Golda Maude Simpson, 86,
of Rte. 1, Eldon, died Thursday, May 31, 1984, at Charles E. Still
Hospital in Jefferson City. She was born April 28, 1898, in Etterville
to John Martin and Malinda Adeline Sullens Agee. On Aug. 25, 1918, she
was married at Etterville to Dolph Simpson, who died April 15, 1971.
Mrs. Simpson was a member of the Ninth Street Christian Church in Eldon
and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Serviving her are four sons, Junior Roland Simpson of Kansas City,
Jewell Simpson of Parkville and Maurice Leon Simpson and Donald Grant
Simpson, both of Eldon; two daughters, Wanda Lorene Wright of Kansas
City, Kan., and Juanita Joanne Jarrett of Eldon; 16 grandchildren; and
11 great-grandchildren. One son, Gene Burdette Simpson, preceded her in
death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev.
Calvin St. Clair officiating. Burial was in the Eldon Cemetery.

Floyd Wayne Keller, 70, of Humansville died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006, at
his home.
The son of Floyd James and Flo Roe Keller, he was born Jan. 5, 1936, at
Springfield.
He married Neva Wilson Dec. 24, 1953, and they were the parents of two
daughters, Annette and Karen.
A member of the Humansville Christian Church, Wayne worked in the
composition department of Witt Printing Co. for 25 1/2 years.
His father and a sister, Jeanette Parry, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Neva, of the home; his mother, Flo Keller of
Humansville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Annette and Donald Haling of
Humansville and Karen and David Kesterson of Battlefield; three
grandchildren, Cassie Ahlers and husband Jerry of Humansville, Jessie
White and husband Bryan and Jeremy Kesterson; four great-grandchildren,
Koby, Lilly and Kade White and Tucker Ahlers; two brothers and
sisters-in-law, Robert and Paula Keller of Humansville and Raymond and
Carolyn Keller of Bolivar; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were Monday, Sept. 18, in Murray Funeral Home, Humansville, with
the Rev. Bill Vernon officiating and burial following in Humansville

Mary Velma Sawyers Eidson, 84, of Macks Creek died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006,
at Windsor Estates in Camdenton. She is the sister of Vera Zelma Scott,
Hermitage.
The daughter of Lewis Alvin and Lucy Irene Mitchell Sawyers, she was born
March 9, 1922, in Hickory County.
She and Arnold Eidson were married in 1942 in Camden County.
Her parents, three brothers, Virgil Floyd Sawyers, Lovell Sawyers and
Cecil Loyd Sawyers, and a sister, Juanita Frances Girard, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include two children, Arnold Everett Eidson and wife Joann of
Tonganoxie, Kan., and Linda Kay Carroll of Englewood, Colo.; one sister,
Vera Zelma Scott of Hermitage; six grandchildren, Donald, Denise and David
Yokum, David, Dwayne and Daniel Eidson; seven great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; many other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in Bethel Missionary
Baptist Church at Nemo with the Rev. Jack Sawyers officiating. Music will
be by the Ginnings Sisters. Pallbearers will be David Eidson, Dwayne

Lovell Dean Davis, 53, of Pleasant Hope died Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, at
St. John's Hospital, Springfield.
He was born March 20, 1953, in Torrington, Wyo., the son of Wayne and
Bertha Kelley Davis.
He served his country for many years in the U.S. Marines, under the
special forces. He served in the Vietnam War for several months at the end
of the war. He served his country and was wounded during the war,
receivingan honorable discharge in 1971.
He made his living by ranching in Wyoming and driving semis across the
United States. He made his pastime of working on semis and automobiles. He
enjoyed buying "junk," as he called it, just to make his wife mad.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home; seven children, Samuel and
Kasey Evans of Pleasant Hope, Sherry and Jason Heath of Buffalo, Christy
Evans and Brian Strafford of Pleasant Hope, Tami and John Simpson of
Louisburg, Mike Davis, Jeremy Davis and spouse and Dean Davis and his
spouse; three sisters, Doris Burtin of Torrington, Wyo., Dayna Thomas of
Cheyenne, Wyo., and Connie Davis of the state of Wyoming; 17
grandchildren, all of surrounding areas of Pleasant Hope.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister who was stillborn.
Cremation rites will be accorded by the Montgomery-Viets Funeral Home of
Buffalo. Private family services will be held at a later date

Dixie Nadine Emberton of Santa Clara, Calif., a native of Bolivar, died at
8:10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, in Mountain View, Calif., at the age
of 85 years, just 15 days shy of her 86th birthday.
She had suffered for years with congestive heart failure. She was a native
of Bolivar and a graduate of Bolivar High School. She was the daughter of
Hobart and Clara Spurgeon and sister of David Spurgeon, who preceded her
in death.
She was a life-long Christian and was baptized at the age of 13 at First
Baptist Church of Bolivar. She married Kenneth Emberton in 1941 and moved
to Baltimore, Md. Before World War II, she moved back to Bolivar when her
husband enlisted in the service. After the war, they made their home in
Baltimore. They moved to California in 1956. She was a homemaker and
active in Santa Clara Baptist Church since 1959. Her husband, Kenneth,
passed away in 2000.
She is survived by her two daughters, Kenna Granath and husband Ron of
Morgan Hills, Calif., and Melissa K. Gibson of Yucca, Ariz.; her four
grandchildren, Ken Granath of Los Bonos, Calif., Carrie Pizzo of San Jose,
Calif., Gregory Gibson and Claran Emberton of Yucca, Ariz.; and three
great-grandchildren, Jamie Pizzo, 11, Kristen Pizzo, 8, and Nicholas
Pizzo, 5. Also surviving are her sisters, Shirley Carson and husband
Johnny, Annabelle Leith and husband Tom and Ruth Wommack and husband J.V.,
all of Bolivar; her brother, Dr. Harlan Spurgeon and wife Joann of
Springfield; and her aunt and uncle, Maxine and Tony Spurgeon.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Butler Funeral
Home Chapel with Pastor Billy E. Russell officiating. Musical soloist will
be Brad Wommack with Rose Roweton as the pianist. Burial will follow in

Joshua "Josh" or "Spiderman" Nathanael Winckler, 31, of Half Way died
Friday, Sept. 15, 2006, as the result of an auto accident.
He was born March 18, 1975, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Steven and
Debbora Newell Winckler. He was a carpenter, attended Glad Tidings
Assembly of God Church and a member of the Woodland Worriers Paint-ball.
His maternal grandfather, Howard Newell, precedes him in death.
Josh is survived by his parents, Steven and Debbi Winckler of Half Way;
four sons, Andrew Lundy, Tyler and Trevor Winckler, all of Phoenix, Ariz.,
and Nathanael Winckler of Half Way; a brother and his wife, Caleb and
Lindsay Winckler of Springfield; a sister and her husband, Sarah and Chris
Clark of Springfield; a girlfriend, Christina Letterman of Half Way; a
maternal grandmother, Dessie Newell of the state of Kentucky; paternal
grandparents, Gerald and Carol Winckler of Half Way; as well as numerous
other relatives.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at Pitts Chapel with Pastor
Walter Breashers officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today
(Wednesday) in the funeral home. His body will be cremated following

Ward Eidson Inglis, 96, of Bolivar died at 5:20 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 17,
2006, in Citizens Memorial Health Care Facility, Bolivar, following a
lengthy illness.
He was born Aug. 4, 1910, in Polk, the son of James and Mary Ellen Eidson
Inglis, the youngest of four children. He was a farmer who enjoyed
hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Bolivar Christian
Church.
His parents, a brother, Howard Inglis, and two sisters, Neva McLean and
Leta Barton, precede him in death.
He is survived by seven nieces and nephews and close friends.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the Mt. View
Cemetery, Polk. Arrangements are under the direction of Pitts Chapel of
Bolivar.

Delma Charlene Tucker, 70, of Bolivar died at 3:32 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19,
2006, at Citizens Memorial Hospital in Bolivar after a sudden illness.
She was born March 31, 1936, in Bunker and grew up there, the daughter of
Tommie Ernest Ratliff and Ella May Patterson Ratliff. Charlene met her
future husband, Joe, in the Bunker area, who was a brother of her best
friend, and they dated for a very short time and were married May 2, 1955,
in the state of Mississippi. To this union two daughters were born.
Charlene and Joe loved being together, whether watching the eagles rear
Bennett Springs or watching St. Louis Cardinal baseball.
She loved her knitting, crocheting and making gifts for others. She was
presently making Christmas gifts for her family and friends. Charlene was
very involved with the Polk County Christian School and the Polk County
Humane Society in charitable ways. She was a member of the Wellspring
Baptist Fellowship and attended when she could. She had many hours of
enjoyment listening to "Bill Gaither" music and also watching QVC.
She and Joe lived many places while Joe was in the Army, but for many
years lived in Lebanon, moving to Bolivar in 1998 after Joe passed away.
Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph Lewis
Tucker, in December 1997; and three sisters and two brothers.
She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and shared with others her faith.
Surviving are her two daughters, Debby Helton and husband John of Kansas
City and JoAnn Summers and husband Carl of Bolivar; one grandson,
Christopher Helton of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many other nieces,
nephews, cousins and the pups she loved and enjoyed.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at the home of
Carl and JoAnn Summers with John Wheeler officiating. Memorial
