Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Friday, November 29, 1996
Roman A. Verhoff, 75, St. Elizabeth, died Wednesday at Truman Memorial
Veterans Hospital, Columbia. He was born March 8, 1921, in St.
Elizabeth, a son of William and Anna Evers Verhoff. He was married
April 22, 1950, in St. Anthony, to Leona Margaret Schaffer, who survives
at the home.
An Army veteran of World War II, he was a farmer. He was a member of
St. Lawrence Catholic Church and American Legion Post 545, both in St.
Elizabeth.
Other survivors include: five sons, William Verhoff, Michael Verhoff
and Anthony Verhoff, all of St. Elizabeth, and Charles Verhoff and
Andrew Verhoff, both of Jefferson City; two sisters, Lucy Holterman,
Freeburg, and Kathrine Pfaff, state of Washington; 10 grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. The Rev. John
Degnan will officiate. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Visitation will be
from 4-8 p.m. today at St. Elizabeth Community Center, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Rekus Funeral Home, St. Elizabeth.

Ross S. Hoskins, 89, Eldon, died Sunday at St. Marys Health Center. He
was born March 4, 1907, in Henley, a son of Harvey and Louise Agnes Opel
Hoskins. He was married Dec. 20, 1958, in Reno, Nev., to Maggie Musick,
who survives of the home.
An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was a member of Immanuel
Baptist Church, Jefferson City. He worked as a machinist in the
aerospace industry in the state of California, retiring in 1969. HE
then moved to Lebanon and to Eldon in 1980.
Other survivors include: one half-sister, Pauline Donigan, Lebanon; and
one stepbrother, Gene Martin, Lebanon.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. Gene Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion
Cemetery, Tuscumbia. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today. Memorials
are suggested to the Mt. Zion Cemetery Association.

Warren J. “Bud” Roark, 76, Jefferson City, died Thursday at Villa Marie
Skilled Nursing Facility. He was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Tuscumbia, a son
of James C. and Alice Martin Roark. He was married July 1, 1955, in
Jefferson City, to Eleanor Distler, who died Jan. 18, 1997.
He attended Jefferson City High School and was a Navy veteran. He
worked as an electrician for local businesses until his retirement in
1985. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical
Workers 257, and a lifetime member of VFW Post 1003, where he served as
past commander.
Survivors include: three brothers, Bill W. Roark and Bobby D. Roark,
both of Jefferson City, and Jack D. Roark, Bonne Terre; and one sister,
Freida Colter, Jefferson City.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Houser-Millard Funeral Home.
Entombment with military honors, will be in the mausoleum at Hawthorn
Memorial Gardens (Jefferson City). Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1
p.m. Saturday. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor’s
choice.

Charles Freman Fahrni, 76, Russellville, died Wednesday at St. Marys
Health Center. He was born March 13, 1921, in Miller County, a son of
Charles and Dona Enloe Fahrni. He was married July 27, 1944, in
Russellville, to Margie Procter, who survives at the home.
He attended school in Kansas City, and worked at Sheffield Steel. He
was a livestock farmer and did carpentry work, both in the Russellville
area. He was a member of the National Cattleman’s Association.
He attended Centropolis Baptist Church, Kansas City, and was a past
member of Enon Baptist Church, near Russellville, where he served as a
trustee and helped establish the educational unit. In 1970 he
transferred his membership to Corticelli Baptist Church, near
Russellville, where he was a trustee for the past 27 years. He served
on the executive board and finance committee of the Concord Baptist
Association.
Other survivors include one son, Don Fahrni, Russellville, and one
granddaughter.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Corticelli Baptist Church. The
Rev. Nelson Duke and the Rev. Dale Larison will officiate. Burial will
be in Enloe Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at
Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home, Russellville. Memorials are suggested to
Corticelli Baptist Church or Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar.

David Lee Wickam, 57, Washington, D.C., died Aug 11 at George Washington
University Medical Center, Washington, D.C. He was born June 16, 1940,
in Miller County, a son of Gean D. and Veeta Woolery Wickam. His mother
survives in Brumley.
He was a Navy veteran. He worked as a research assistant at the Federal
Trade Commission, Washington, D.C., for 25 years.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Laura Louise Garner, Los Gatos,
Calif.; five brothers, Earl Wayne Wickham, St. Peters, Doial Wickam and
Dennis Wickam, both of Brumley, and Shirrel Daniel Wickam and Richard
Wicham, both of Lake Ozark; two sisters, Laura Scott, Brumley, and Helen
Wheeler, Springfield; and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gott Cemetery, Brumley.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hedges Funeral Home, Osage
Beach.

Guy Berry, 94, Iberia, died Wednesday at Maries Manor Health Care and
Rehabilitation Center, Vienna. He was born June 27, 1903, in Miller
County, a son of Leonard and Effie Cross Berry. He was married in 1944
in Minnesota to Ruth E. Cuhel, who died Nov. 20, 1987.
He graduated from Drury College in Springfield and received a master’s
degree in teaching from Michigan State University. He worked as a
federal meat inspector at Swift Packing in St. Paul, Minn., for 32 years
until retiring. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, West
St. Paul, Minn.
Survivors include one sister, Pauline Rowden, Iberia.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The
Rev. Earl Skidds will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery near
Iberia. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday. Memorials are
suggested to the Brays Advent Christian Church, Iberia.

August G. “Gus” Bax, 98, St. Elizabeth, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth
Care Center. He was born Nov. 8, 1898, in St. Elizabeth, a son of
Joseph and Anna Dickneite Bax. He was married Nov. 11, 1924, in St.
Anthony, to Rosa D. Braun, who survives at the home.
A farmer, he was a lifelong resident of St. Elizabeth. He was a member
of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, St. Elizabeth.
Other survivors include: two sons, Norman J. Bax, Broken Arrow, Okla.,
and Giles A. Bax, St. Petersburg, Fla.; one daughter, Lorraine Bax,
Kaiser; two brothers, Anton Bax and Victor Bax, both of St. Elizabeth;
two sisters, Catherine Hoecker, St. Elizabeth, and Martha Berendzen,
Marys Home; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.

Garland “Jack” Thomson, 82, Jefferson City, died Monday at St. Marys
Health Center. He was born July 15, 1915, in Tuscumbia, a son of Lee
and Minnie Roark Thomson.
He was a member of the Saline Valley Church of Christ, and was a
musician with a music show in the Eldon area. He lived in Eldon most of
his life and worked as a union carpenter for many years.
He is survived by one daughter, Judith Comer, Jefferson City, six
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. One son, Richard Lee
Thomson, preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tuscumbia Cemetery.

Chet Zuck Sr., 77, Eldon, died Thursday at his home. He was born Nov.
15, 1919, in Douglas, Kan., a son of Guy G. and Chloe Helen Morehead
Zuck. He was married July 24, 1946, in Wichita, Kan., to Helen Morris
who survives at the home.
He had been a foreman for Dunstan and Yows Construction Co. since 1953.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served overseas through eight
campaigns. He was a member of VFW Post 1003, Jefferson City. He was a
member of the Methodist Church and attended First Baptist Church, Eldon.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and private pilot.
Other survivors include: two sons, Robert Eugene Zuck, Barnett, and
Chet Zuck Jr., Tuscumbia; two sisters, Violet Fisher, Canton, Kan., and
Vernie Woodworth, Cabool; three grandchildren and one
great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. Randall bunch will officiate. Burial will be in Greenmore Memorial
Gardens, Barnett. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today. Memorials

Melva K. Wood, 92, Eldon, died Wednesday at Good Shepherd Care Center,
Versailles. She was born June 9, 1905, in Miller County, a daughter of
Arch P. and Linda Sidebottom Wood. A lifelong resident of Miller
County, she was a homemaker. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include one son, Joe Wood, Eldon, six grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Eldon City Cemetery.

Clark L. Hale, 85, Fresno, Calif., formerly of Eldon, died Wednesday at
St. Agnes Medical Center, Fresno. He was born Sept 9, 1911, in Hickory
Hill, a son of M. E. and Ida Leona Musick Hale. He was married to Marie
Russell, who survives of the home.
He worked as a meat cutter at Eldon IGA Foodliner, and operated a resort
at the Lake of the Ozarks. He moved to the Lake area in 1946, to Eldon
in 1960 and to Fresno in 1978. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a
member of the VFW.
Other survivors include: one stepson, Jim Baker, Clovis, Calif., and
one granddaughter.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
Burial will be In Hickory Hill Cemetery with graveside military honors
by VFW Post 2442 of Eldon. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

E. Lee Enloe, 83, Jefferson City, died Saturday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Southwest. She was born Sept. 28, 1913, in Brumley, a
daughter of George W. and Hanna May Broome Helton. She was married June
30, 1932, in Jefferson City to Isaac J. Enloe, who died in August 1977.
A 1932 graduate of Tuscumbia High School, she was a homemaker. She was
employed as a license examiner in the Motor Vehicle Division of the
Missouri Department of Revenue. She was a member of Memorial Baptist
Church, where she taught Sunday school for 25 years, and sang in the
church choir. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union, the
AARP and the Missouri State Retirees Association.
Survivors include: two sons, L. Jack Enloe, Carthage, and W. Mark
Enloe, Jefferson City; one daughter, Marilyn K. Ebert, Nixa; two
brothers, Robert Helton, Jefferson City, and Warren Helton, Eldon; two
sisters, Elpha Crump, Jefferson City, and Helen Mathews, Eldon; five
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Baptist Church. The
Rev. Ferrie Cole and the Rev. Allen Speer will officiate. Burial will
be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at
Buescher Memorial Home. Memorials are suggested to Memorial Baptist

Ruth J. Hogan, 86, Jefferson City, died Monday at Methodist Hospital,
Omaha, Neb. She was born Sept 4, 1910, in Olean, a daughter of Robert
L. and Laura Atkin Jordan. She was married to Arthur M. Hogan, who died
Nov. 12, 1978.
A 1928 graduate of Eldon High School, she received a bachelor’s degree
in education from Warrensburg State College, and a master’s degree from
Peabody College, Nashville. She was a teacher with the Jefferson City
public school system for 33 years until her retirement in 1976. She
served the last 27 years of her career as elementary art supervisor for
the public schools.
She was honored in 1983 when the annual Ruth Hogan Children’s Art
Exhibit of the Jefferson City public schools was designated with her
name. In 1994 she was recognized by the Capital City Council on the
Arts with the Jefferson City Arts Award. She was a member of First
Untied Methodist Church, Capital City Council on the Arts, the state and
local Retired Teachers Associations, and Jefferson City Art Club, where
she served as president.
Survivors include: one son, Arthur M. Hogan, Omaha; one brother, Dr.
Robert A. Jordan, Tulsa, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Buescher Memorial Home. The Rev.
Dorothy Lairmore will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant
Cemetery, Miller County. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday.

Leonard A. Lepper, 78, Eugene, died Monday at his home. He was born
Jan. 24, 1919, in Marys Home, a son of Herman and Theresa Mormann
Lepper. He was married June 10, 1941, in Marys Home, to Norma Schulte,
who survives at the home.
He was a lifelong resident of Marys Home. After working many years as a
mechanic, he was employed in the maintenance division of the Missouri
National Guard. He retired after 11 years of service. He was a member
of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Marys Home, and was active
with the Marys Home Senior Citizens Group.
Other survivors include: three sons, Allan Lepper, Eldon, and Kenny
Lepper and Ralph Lepper, both of Marys Home; three daughters, Becky
Schulte, Marys Home, Doris Schulte, Barnett and Terri Lepper, Eldon; one
sister, Martha Talken, Jefferson City; two brothers, Andrew Lepper,
Eugene, and Joe Lepper, Henley; 12 grandchildren; two
step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three
step-great-grandchildren; and two foster grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic
Church. The Rev. William Korte will officiate. Burial will be in Our
Lady of the Snows Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8:30 p.m.

Margie Lee Phillips, 81, Crocker, died Saturday at Osage Beach Health
Center. She was born May 30, 1916, in Miller County, a daughter of
Claude and Laura Smith Thornsberry. She was married July 8, 1939, in
Lebanon, to Robert B. Phillips, who died Jan. 16, 1964. She was a
member of First Baptist Church, Crocker, and the ladies auxiliary of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars. She worked at the Fort Leonard Wood
commissary, retiring after 30 years.
She is survived by one grandson, Steve Phillips, Strafford; one
granddaughter, Susie Umlauf, Rockbridge; and three great-grandchildren.
One son, Richard Lee Phillips, died Nov. 11, 1983. One daughter, Doris
Jean Phillips, died Aug 31, 1947.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Birmingham-Martin Funeral Home,
Crocker. The Rev. Ben Woody will officiate. Burial will be in Zion
Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Thursday. Memorials are

Joseph Bruce Allen, 77, Eldon, died Saturday at St. Marys Health Center.
He was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Miller County, a son of Fordyce and Chloe
Foote Allen. He was married Sept 6, 1959, in Kansas City, to Ella Mae
Campbell, who died Sept 4, 1988.
He was employed as a machine operator at Lake City Arsenal, Kansas City,
for 30 years until his retirement in t he early 1980s. He was a member
of the Masons and First Christian Church, Eldon.
Survivors include: two daughters, Judith K. Looten, Olean, and Joyce F.
Campbell, Versailles; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

Elvy Earl “Buddy” Hawk, 76, Eldon, died Saturday at Eldon Healthcare.
HE was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Camden County, a son of James R. and
Martha Jane Whalen Hawk. He was married Nov. 7, 1949, in Vienna to
Martha Keeth, who survives in Eldon.
An Army veteran of World War II, he received four Bronze Stars. He was
a self-employed woodcutter and raised mules for raccoon hunting. He was
a member of Old Path Church, near Eldon.
Other survivors include: three sons, Tim Hawk, James Dale Hawk and Joe
Hawk, all of Eldon; three daughters, Janie Hawk, Susie Admire and Shelia
Dinwiddie, all of Eldon; nine grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren. Two sons, Mark Hawk and Daniel Lee Hawk, preceded
him in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. Danny Graham will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscumbia Cemetery.

Veva Sanning, 87 Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Miller County, died
Friday at Osteopathic Medical Center, Fort Worth. She was born Feb. 21,
1910, in Tuscumbia, a daughter of Jess and Eva Graham Hicks. She was
married in 1968, in Eldon, to Otto Sanning, who survives in Eldon.
A homemaker, she had lived in Fort Worth for the past two years. A
resident of Miller County for most of her life, she attended Saline
Valley Church of Christ.
Other survivors include: one son, Joseph E. Staley, Fort Worth; one
stepson, Ed Sanning, Rocky Mount; one sister, Marie Conner,
Independence; one brother, Carl Hicks, North Kansas City; four
grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two
step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

Helen Marie Tellman, 85, Jefferson City, died Saturday at St. Marys
Health Center. She was born Nov. 23, 1911, in Marys Home, a daughter of
George H. and Agnes Mormann Kempker. She was married June 6, 1933, in
Marys Home, to Leonard John Tellman, who died Dec. 23, 1989.
She had attended Our Lady of Snows Parish School in Marys Home. A
homemaker, she also had been employed with Rost Heating and Plumbing
Co., Davis Cleaners and the Missouri State National Guard as a
bookkeeper.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, St. Anne’s Sodality,
St. Marys Health Center Auxiliary and St. Marys Busy Fingers Quilters.
Survivors include: three daughters, Vera Lynn Luebbering and Verna Lee
Luebbert, both of Jefferson City, and Carole Marie Pilkington, St.
Cloud, Fla.; two sisters, Josephine Stevens and Veronica Evers, both of
Jefferson City; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church.
Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8
p.m. Monday at Buescher Memorial Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Lee Burks, 96, Eldon, died Sunday at St. Marys Health Center. She was
born Jan 19, 1901, in Miller County, a daughter of Marvin E. and Lena
Harrison Slote. She was married to Paul Pittman Wright. She was later
married Feb. 12, 1940, in Tuscumbia, to William Benjamin “Ben” Burks,
who died June 16, 1983.
She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, serving as church secretary,
song leader and Sunday school teacher. She was later a member of First
Baptist Church of Eldon, where she was a member of the quilting club.
She lived most of her life on a farm in Miller County, moving to Eldon
in 1982.
Survivors include: two daughters, Monica McMillen and Velda Wood, both
of Eldon; one sister, Leona Swofford, Kansas City; one brother, Charles
Slote, Carl Junction; two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and
two great-great-grandchildren. Two infant daughters and one son, Paul
Wright Jr., preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The Rev. Jasper Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscumbia
Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today. Memorials are

Lila L. Stark, 90, Eldon, died Thursday at Lake of the Ozarks General
Hospital, Osage Beach. She was born March 19, 1907, in Linn Creek, a
daughter of Kelly and Elsie Jane Waters Bottoms. She was married March
26, 1925, in Bagnell, to Joe Stark, who died Jan. 2, 1963.
A longtime resident of the Lake area, she worked for Dogpatch U.S.A.
She studied history of Camden and Miller counties.
Survivors include: two daughters, Irma Lee Fleeman, Columbia, and
Pauline Mae Brown, Lake Ozark; three sisters, Edith Brown, Lapeer,

Thomas A. “Tom” Banner, 86, Eldon, died Thursday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Madison. He was born Sept. 21, 1911, in Camden County, a
son of Samuel and Leona Marie Harvey Banner. He was married July 18,
1936, in Tuscumbia, to Maggie Leona Dorl, who died Jan. 28, 1987.
He was an iron worker and bridge construction worker prior to returning
to Eldon in 1945. He was a longtime farmer in the Eldon and Barnett
areas. HE owned and operated Banner & Sons Feed Mill in Barnett prior
to retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Eldon. He was
a member and past master of Barnett Masonic Lodge 591 AF & AM. He
served two terms on the Eldon School Board.
Survivors include: three sons, Charles Banner and Sam Banner, both of
Eldon, and Larry Banner, Barnett; one brother, Jim Banner, Houston,
Texas; two sisters, Jessie Whitworth, Eugene, Ore., and Martha Clear,
Warrensburg; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church. The Rev.

Wilma J. Swofford, 48, Brumley, died Friday at Boone Hospital Center,
Columbia. She was born Sept. 18, 1948, in Brumley, a daughter of Gordon
S. and Norma Brown Robinett. Her parents survive in Brumley. She was
married July 21, 1969, in Pulaski County to Larry R. Swofford, who
survives at the home.
A lifelong resident of Miller County, she was co-owner/secretary of
Kountry Scape, Kaiser, and a member of Glover Chapel Church of Christ.
Other survivors include: two sons, Eric Swofford and Travis Swofford,
both of Brumley; one brother, Gary Robinett, Brumley; one sister,
Glendia Barry, Brumley; and four grandchildren.

Oval Ethel Sauls, 97, Iberia, died Monday at Balanced Care, Dixon. She
was born June 19, 1900, in Crocker, a daughter of Horatio and Cynthia
Jane Dodd Prater. She was married July 4, 1917, in Iberia, to Andy
Sauls, who died Aug 14, 1969.
A homemaker, she was a member of Iberia Church of the Nazarene, where
she taught Sunday school for many years.
Survivors include: one son, Harold R. “Hallie” Sauls, Sedalia one
daughter, Edith Lucinda McDowell, Iberia; one brother, Glen Prater, Yuba
City, Calif.; three sisters, Emma Faldtz, Lincoln, Neb., and Eva Wilson
and Alice Moss, both of Iberia; four grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. One son, John
Bethel “J.B.” Sauls, died April 13, 1990.

Medical Center-Madison. She was born March 29, 1924, in Miller County,
a daughter of Jessie and Lilllie Cross Albertson. She was married Aug
30, 1943, in Jefferson City, to Joseph B. Lammers, who died in 1947. She
was married December 11, 1952, in Jefferson City to John C. Lammers, who
died Jan. 29, 1982.
She attended Wilson School in Miller County and graduated from Tuscumbia
High School. She worked in nursing service at Fulton State Hospital for
several years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist
Church.
Survivors include: one daughter, Sherri Buchanan, Jefferson City; one
son, John A. Lammers, Hartsburg; one brother, Charles Albertson,
Chelsea, Wash.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Beata Angeline Kliegel, 74, Jefferson City, died Friday at Capital
Region Medical Center-Southwest. She was born Jan. 16, 1923, in St.
Elizabeth, a daughter of Frank X. and Mary Rehagen Kemna. She was
married Oct. 29, 1949, in Jefferson City to Edward Joseph Kliegel, who
died Jan. 27, 1989.
An accomplished seamstress, she was employed with Singer Sewing Co. in
Jefferson City and designed costumes for numerous local theatrical
productions. She taught swimming lessons to children and adults for 20
years from her home. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic church, St.
Ann’s Sodality and the church council. She also was active in the Girl
Scouts, Helias Band Boosters and Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include: three daughters, Mary Kay Burns, Affton, Maria
Hursig, Albuquerque, N.M., and Maureen Olsen, Moorhead, Minn.; one son,
Frank Kliegel, Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Alma Hughes, Jefferson City;

sustained in a traffic accident. He was born Dec. 7, 1916, a son of

in Iberia to Geneva Colvin, who died Sept 23, 1992.
He taught in several rural schools in Miller, Boone, Randolph, Johnson
and Pulaski counties. He was a member of the Retired Teachers
Association and the Masonic Lodge.

Center, Jefferson City. She was born Feb. 10, 1920, in Box, Okla., a

married Sept. 30, 1939, in Boonville, to Clifford I. Strange.
A graduate of School of the Osage High School, she lived most of her
life in Eldon but moved to Jefferson City in 1978. She was a homemaker
and later worked for Wal-Mart in Eldon and Jefferson City, retiring in
1982. She was a charter member of Jefferson City Baptist Church, where
she was active in the choir and with children.
Survivors include: four daughters, Jean Willburn, Fairfield, Calif.,
Mary Curtit, Jefferson City, Donna Badley, Guymon, Okla., and Linda
Kemmer, Linn; four sons, Clifford Strange Jr., Eldon, Harold Strange,

Lowin “Sarge” Dinwiddie, 70, Eldon, died Saturday at St. Marys Health
Center. He was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Kaiser, a son of John and Minnie
McDaniel Dinwiddie. His mother survives in Eldon. He served in the
Army for 22 years until his retirement in 1966. He was self-employed in
refrigeration, heating and air-conditioning service until his
retirement.
He was a member of Aurora Springs Baptist Church, Aurora Springs; the
Refrigeration Service Engineers Society, Central Missouri Chapter; a
life member of Miller County VFW Post 2442; a life member of Rocky Mount
Amvets Post 108; and a volunteer with the Baptist Builders Association.
Other survivors include: one son, Keith Dinwiddie, Eldon; one stepson,
Wayne Porter, Eldon; two stepdaughters, Freda Green, Tuscumbia, and

He served in the Missouri Highway Patrol for 30 years, retiring as a
lieutenant. He also was a veteran of the Marine Corps and was an Amy

She was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, and was a life member of
VFW Post 2442 Ladies Auxiliary. She worked for 15 years as a nurse’s
aide at Still Hospital, retiring in 1992. She lived in the Versailles

Naomi I. Dutcher, 72, California, died today at her home. She was born
Jan. 14, 1925, in Eldon, a daughter of Clifford and Iola Bass Gamphor.
She was married April 8, 1951, in Eldon, to Kenneth Dutcher, who
survives at the home.
She was a 1943 Graduate of Eldon High School. She worked as an
executive secretary at BMA Insurance, Kansas City, and was co-owner of
K.A. Dutcher Paint & Varnish, California. She was a member of First
Baptist Church, California.
Other survivors include: one son, Darryl Dutcher, California; one
daughter, Nora Yelton, California; three brothers, Raleigh Gamphor,
Grandview, Victor Gamphor, Eldon, and Lynn Gamphor, Ft. Lewis, Wash.;
one sister, Rita Coors, Golden, Colo.; and two granddaughters, One son,
David Kent Dutcher, died March 1, 1960.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home,
California. The Rev. Greg Morrow and the Rev. Gary Schulte will
officiate. Burial will be in High Point Cemetery, High Point.

Lucille Jenkins, 79, Independence, formerly of Eldon, died Friday at
Truman Medical Center East. She was born July 25, 1917, in Eugene, a daughter
of Charles M. and Edna Jackson Jenkins. Her father’s nickname was “Steamboat
Charley”.
She lived in the Eugene community most of her life, moving to Kansas
City in 1980. Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at noon Monday in Eugene Cemetery. Bro.

Ray Kliethermes Sr., 86, St. Anthony, died Wednesday at St. Marys
Health Center (Jefferson City). He was born March 9, 1910, in Loose Creek, a
son of Matt and Genefa Jaegers Kliethermes. He was married Jan. 27, 1932, in
Okeene, Okla., to Anna C. Boeckman, who survives at the home.
He owned and operated a produce company in Meta from 1929-1934, and
farmed in the St. Anthony community since 1946. He was a member of the St.
Anthony Senior Citizens Group and St. Anthony Catholic Church.
Other survivors include: six sons, Al W. Kliethermes and Jerome
Kliethermes, both of Eldon, Raymond Kliethermes Jr. and Edward Kliethermes,
both of Marys Home, James N. Kliethermes, Eugene, and Paul Kliethermes, St.
Anthony; two brothers, Leo Kliethermes and Herbert Kliethermes, both of St.
Elizabeth; one sister, Lorraine Luebbert, St. Elizabeth; 22 grandchildren,
four step grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two step great-
grandchildren. Two sons, Matthias Kliethermes and William Kliethermes,
preceded him in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Oral Dow Keeth, 87, Eldon, died Nov. 14, 2000, in Osage Beach. He was
born Jan 7, 1913, in Pulaski County, a son of Pearly and Ollie Shelton
Keeth. He was married Oct. 30, 1935, in Tuscumbia, to Delpha
Richardson, who survives at the home. He was a self-employed carpenter.
Other survivors include: three daughters, Jean Blankenship, Rocky
Mount, and Helen Arnold and Shelly Richardson, both of Eldon; one son,
Mitchell Keeth, Eldon; four brothers, Leo Keeth, Idaho Falls, Idaho,

Bennie B. Campbell, 90, Iberia, died December 20, 2000, at Capital
Region Medical Center. HE was born March 11, 1910, in Helix, Ore., a
son of Alfred and Rebecca Zumwalt Campbell. He was married March 11,
1933, in Iberia, to Dorcas Louise Ferguson, who survives at the home.
A graduate of Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, he received a
master's degree in mathematics from the University of Missouri-Columbia,
and a master's degree in public school administration from Washington
Universtiy, St. Louis. He taught school in Tuscumbia, Macks Creek,
Climax Springs and Bunker. He coached sports; was principal and
superintendent at several schools; and refereed basketball throughout
Central Missouri. HE taught school in Alton, Ill., for 30 years,
returning to Iberia in 1972.
He was a member and deacon at Iberia First Baptist Church. HE served as
Sunday school superintendent at various times, and was a member of
Gideons International. He raised Charolais cattle in Iberia.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Lois Marie Akers, Fox Creek,
Alberta, Canada; two sons, Wallace Campbell, Hartsburg, and Jim
Campbell, Minneapolis; one sister, Letha Johnson, Richland; eight
grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Hoover M. Richardson, 92, Harrisonville, died Dec. 12, 2000, in
Harrisonville. He was born Jan. 13, 1908, in Tuscumbia, a son of
Phiander P. and Clara Alice Birdsong Richardson. He married Oct. 3,
1947, to Erma L. Knoch, who died Sept. 30, 1990. He was a construction
laborer and farmer. He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include: three daughters, Alice Hildebrand, Harrisonville,
Margaret Imler, Joplin, and Sue Lucas, Green River, Wyo.; nine
grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. One son, Charles Bowden
preceded him in death.

William Kenneth Shelton, 80, Brumley, died October 26, 2000, at Lake
Regional Hospital, Osage Beach. He was born Oct. 3, 1920, near Brumley,
a son of Alonzo and Verdie Witt Shelton. He was married June 15, 1950,
in Tuscumbia, to Geraldine Long who survives at the home.
An Army veteral of World War II, he was a lifelong resident of Brumley.
He worked for Osage Asphalt, and retired from Lake Asphalt, Linn Creek.
He was a member of Mount Union Church of Christ, Brumley.

Robert G. Lawson, 52, Valley Park, a former resident of Dixon, died
Friday at John Cochran Veterans Hospital, St. Louis. Mr. Lawson was
born March 17, 1931, in Maries County, a son of Roe and Velva Barnhart
Lawson. He was married June 18, 1956, at Vienna, to Margareta
Engelhardt, who survives. He was a veteran of the Korean War and a
member of V.F.W. Post No. 439, Valley Park. He was employed as a
carpenter.

Lawson, of the home; two daughters, Miss Peggy Lawson, of the home, and

Kenneth Craft, a former Miller countian died in St. Louis, Aug 1, having been in
poor health for several months. He would have been 52 years old had he lived until
the 24th of this month.
He was the son of the late Fred Craft and Lura Craft Martin and was a grandson of
the late Dr. Conner, one of the pioneer doctors of Miller County. A brother,
Walter, also preceded him in death.
He was born in Brumley, where he lived until his graduation from high school. Most
of the remainder of his life was spent in St. Louis. He is survived by his wife,
Katie, nee Brown; a sister, Mrs. Mable Phillips of Kansas City; three
step-brothers, Paul and Stanley Martin of Olean, and Dorsey Martin of Caledonia,
Wisconsin; a step-sister, Mrs Max Haines of Grandview; two nieces, Mrs. Juanita
Danoff of Columbia and Mrs. Jean Sears of Kansas City; two nephews, Walter Craft
Jr. of California and Billy Phillips who lives in an eastern state, and many other
relatives and friends.
Mr and Mrs. Paul Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Martin of Olean attended the
funeral services Sunday afternoon in Troy, MO, where burial was made.

John L. Conner, son of Dr. J. L. Conner and Elnora Conner, was born
December 15, 1882 and passed away September 1st, 1948 at the age of 65
years 8 months and 17 days of age. On March 19, 1910 he was united in
marriage to Ida Maude McCullough, and to this union 4 children were
born: Mrs. Ralph Wall of Kansas City, KS, Roland Connor of San Antonio,
TX, Mrs. Basil Crisp of California, MO and Loran Connor of the home.
All his life was spent in and around Brumley, MO where he married and
raised his family. His wife, Maud, preceded him in death having passed
away February 17, 1941 and also one sister, Bernice passed away at the
age of sisteen.
He leaves to mour his passing his children, one sister, Mrs. Laura
Martin of Olean, MO, 6 grandchildren, 2 nephews and 2 nieces and many
other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 4, at the
Brumley Christian Church with Rev. A.L. Alexander officiating. Burial
was made in the Hawkins Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge
of the Hedges Funeral Home of Iberia.

Miss Stella Pauline Kallenbach, 86, Eldon, died Monday at Villa Marie
Nursing Home, Jefferson City. She was born July 9, 1897, at Tuscumbia,
a daughter of John and Minnie A. Nixdorf Kallenbach.
Miss Kallenbach was a graduate of Central Missouri State College,
Warrensburg, and did graduate work at the University of Colorado. She
taught history and political Science at several places in Missouri. She
had lived in Eldon the past 12 years, and had served as director of
Missouri Girls State for two years. She was a member of the Saline
Valley Church of Christ.
Survivors include: two brothers, Henry Kallenbach and Edison
Kallenbach, both of Eldon; and two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Curty, Eldon, and
Miss Ruth Kallenbach, Jefferson City.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillilps Funeral Home, Eldon,

Mr. Vernon was a member of the Aurora Springs Baptist Church and he was
employed at the Glaser Brothers Manufacturing Co., Eldon, and was later
employed at the Glen Ridge Trouser Corp. until his retirement in 1971.
He was a lifelong resident of Miller County.

John Randell Wood, 68, Eldon, died Thursday at his home. He was born
July 22, 1914, at Eldon, a son of John Alfred and Ethel Ann Reed Wood.
On Dec. 25, 1938, he was married in Tuscumbia to Alice B. Kidwell, who
survives at the home.
Mr. Wood was a member of the Temple Masonic Lodge in Springfield and the
Abou Ben Adhem Shrine of Springfield. He worked as an insurance
salesman in Missouri and Texas until he retired and moved to the Lake of
the Ozarks area.

Leve C. Workman, 82, Eldon, died Thursday at Charles E. Still Hospital
(Jefferson City). He was born Aug. 5, 1899, at Henley, the son of
William and Phoebe Robinett Workman. He was married Aug 22, 1922, to
Cynthia Jane Pope, who survives at the home.
A resident of the Eldon area most of his life, Mr. Workman was a
maintenance worker with the Rock Island Railroad for 40 years prior to
his retirement in 1970.

Care Center. He was born April 29, 1902, in Miller County, the son of
Solomon and Betty Wall Cochran. On Dec. 17, 1922, he was married at
Iberia to Fern Moneymaker, who survives at the home.
Mr. Cochran was a retired farmer and lifetime resident of Miller County.
He was a member of the Mount Union Church of Christ near Brumley.

19, 1926, at Jefferson City, to Elsie E. Jenkins, who survives at the

a barber for more than 60 years prior to his retirement.

Oscar Howard, 91, Linn, died Saturday at Charles E. Still Hospital
(Jefferson City). Mr. Howard was born Aug 10, 1891, at Baxter, Ky., a
son of Jarvis and Belle Neeley Howard. He was married Dec. 21, 1955, at
Vienna, to Georgia Gilbert, who survives at the home.
He was a lifelong resident of the Meta and St. Elizabeth area prior to
moving to Linn four years ago. Mr. Howard was a retired Rock Island
Railroad employee, a veteran of World War I, and a charter member of the
American Legion Post at Iberia. He served two terms on the rural Miller
County School Board and he was a member of the Osage County Historical
Society. He was also an honorary Kentucky Colonel, appointed by Gov.
Julian Carroll.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. June Williams, Kansas
City, and Mrs. Betty Radmacher, Linn; one brother, James Howard, St.
Elizabeth; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Bock, Meta; seven grandchildren

Chester Harold Starkey, 78, of 1922 S. Circle Dr. (Jefferson City), died
Thursday at Columbia Regional Hospital following a lengthy illness. He
was born April 24, 1905, at Eldon, the son of Homer N. and Sarah Strike
Starkey. He was married Octg. 29, 1929, at Jefferson City to Margaret
Woratzeck, who died March 3, 1968.
He was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral, the State Highway Employee’s
Association of Missouri, the American Association of Retired Persons,
and F.O.E. No. 2693. He retired from the Missouri State Highway
Headquarters Garage after 18 years of service. He was also a meat
cutter for Kroger and A&P, and served as area supervisor for over 26
years while with Kroger.
Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Bob McElwaine, 4428 Rainbow
Circle; one sister, Mrs. Donald Hunter, 1132 East Dunklin St.; and four
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held last Sunday for Elmer Carroll, 88, Waynesville, who
died Aug. 19. He was born Aug. 30, 1894, at Iberia, a son of Franklin
and Bashay Peoria Elkins Carroll. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Zora Carroll. Mr. Carroll was a member of the Iduma Church.
Other survivors: three sons, Chester Carroll, Southerlin, Ore., Lloyd
Carroll, Swisshome, Ore., and Hershel Carroll of Big Piney; two
daughters, Ozelma Spratley, Jefferson City, and Orpha Wood, Ft. Clayton,

Ralph John Reven Jr., 53, Eldon, died Tuesday at Lake of the Ozarks
Clinic. Mr. Reven was born Aug 12, 1929, at Jefferson City, a son of
Ralph and Anna Bailey Reven. On Jan. 1, 1962, he was married to Marva
L. Harms, who survives at the home. He was a machinist employed at
Kansas City before retiring in 1966. He served in the U.S. Army and
moved to Eldon in 1966.

Jewel H. Wilson, 59, Dixon, died today at the Universtiy of Missouri
Medical Center, Columbia. He was born Aug. 19, 1924, in Miller County,
the son of Leonard and Frankie Wilson. His mother survives at Iberia.
On Oct. 31, 1942, he was married at Tuscumbia to Emogene Blankenship,
who survives of the home.
Mr. Wilson was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the V.F.W.
Post, Iberia, and the Mt. Gilead Church, Iberia.
Other survivors include: two sons, Ernie Wilson and Jim Wilson, both of
Iberia; a daughter, Mrs. Judy Blankenship, Iberia; five brothers,
Spurgeon Wilson, Junior Wilson, Bobby Wilson, and Kenneth Wilson, all of
Iberia, and George Wilson, state of Michigan; three sisters, Mrs. Edna
Humphrey, and Mrs. Margaret Cochran, both of Iberia, and Mrs. Ruby Mees,
Phoenix, Ariz.; and six grandsons.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at the
Stevinson-Mossman Funeral Home Chapel, Iberia, with Brother Larry Neal
officiating. Burial will be in the Pankey Cemetery, near Iberia.
Millitary graveside rites will be conducted by the Fort Leonard Wood
Mortuary Team. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral

Mrs. Sophia M. Cooper, 89, of 1310 Linden Dr. (Jefferson City), died
today at St. Mary’s Health Center (Jefferson City) after an illness of
about 1 ½ months. She had been hospitalized for the past week. She was
born Nov. 5, 1893, at St. Elizabeth, a daughter of Casper and Mary J.
Stumpe Luebbert. On Sept. 14, 1914, she was married at St. Elizabeth to
Thomas Cooper, who died in 1950.
She moved from St. Elizabeth to Jefferson City before her marriage to
work in the dining room of the old Central Hotel. Before her retirement
in 1980, she worked as housekeeper at the Governor’s Mansion for
Governors Bond and Teasdale. She had worked in the past at Mrs. Petits
Dining Room, then located at the corner of McCarty and Madison Streets.
Mrs. Cooper was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral and the altar and
rosary society.
Survivors include: a son, Joseph Cooper, San Antonio, Texas; four
daughters, Mrs. Mary Benedict, 313 Boonville Rd., Mrs. Dorothy Tipton,
Godfrey, Ill., and Mrs. Helen Saults and Mrs. Estelle Laton, both of
Branson; a brother, Henry Luebbert, Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Mrs.
Anna Luetkemeyer, Jefferson City; seven grandchildren and 8
great-grandchildren.
The rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Houser Funeral Home. The
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Cathedral, with burial
in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Timothy Andrew McNeal, 2, of Tuscumbia died today at the University of
Missouri Medical Center at Columbia after suffering from leukemia for
more than a year. He was born at Fort Worth, Texas on Aug. 20, 1980,
son of Danny and Belinda Sue Kelsay McNeal. His parents survive.
Other survivors include: two sisters, Miss Angela McNeal and Miss Karin
McNeal, both of the home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard
McNeal, Sedalia; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Kelsay,
Iberia; paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete McNeal and Mrs.

Tuscumbia. She was born Aug. 29, 1985, at Capps, a daughter of William and Lucy
Burton Stark. On Dec. 24, 1905, she was married to Cordell Burnett, who died Aug
11, 1958. On March 17, 1964, she was married to Oliver Abbet, who died Jan. 9,
1981. A lifelong resident of Miller County, she was a member of Mt. Zion Christian
Church, Tuscumbia.
Survivors include: four sons, Truman Burnett, Eldon, Lawrence Burnett and Herbert
Burnett, both of Iberia, and Bill Burnett, Granite City, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs.
Luch Benda, Granite City, Ill., and Mrs. Jewel Lindsey, Bethlehem, Pa.; two

Osage Beach. She was born Jan. 24, 1900, in Miller County, the daughter

County, she worked for Glazer Brothers Pants Factory, Eldon, until 1961.

Terry Wayne Vaughan, 29, Gardner, Kan., formerly of Iberia, died
Saturday at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Shawnee Mission, Kan.,
after suffering injuries in a motorcycle accident one week ago. Mr.
Vaughan was born Sept. 9, 1953, at Iberia, a son of Wayne and Donna
Renfrow Vaughan. His parents survive at Iberia. He was married Dec.
16, 1982, at St. Louis, to Michelle Bailey, who survives.
Mr. Vaughan was a graduate of Iberia High School. He received his B.A.
degree from Southwest Missouri State, Springfield and he received his
Master’s degree in public administration from the University of
Missouri-Columbia. He was employed as city administrator in Gardner,
Kan. He was a member of the Iberia United Methodist Church.
Other survivors include: one sister, Mrs. Barbara Witt, Iberia; and his
grandmother, Mrs. Florence Vaughan, Meta.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Stevinson-Mossman funeral
Home, Iberia, with the Rev. Charles Heidbrier officiating. Burial will

Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Tuesday August 2, 1983
Maj. Ralph Edward Sewell, 70, Eldon, died Sunday at Memorial Community
Hospital (Jefferson City). He was born May 11, 1913, at Independence,
the son of Myer Vernon and Nilda Neal Sewell. On April 24, 1943, he was
married at Eldon to Rosanne Kelsay, who survives of the home.
Major Sewell retired in 1964 as a major in the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. He began his military career in 1941 and received his
commission in 1943. He served in France, Czechoslovakia, Guam, Iwo
Jima, Aaiwan, Germany, and five stations in the United States. He
received the bronze star, purple heart, as well as other military
honors. He was past member of the Eldon Lions Club, and operated a
Derby Station in Eldon for two years after his retirement ans was
manager of the Eldon Fair for three years.
Other survivors include: a son, Lt. Col. James W. Sewell, U.S. Army,
Germany; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Phillips Funeral Home,
Eldon, with the Rev. James Westmoreland and the Rev. Arnim Ray
officiating. Burial will be in the Eldon City Cemetery. Visitation
will be after 2 p.m. today at the Pillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

James G. Harbison, 83, Martinsburg, died Friday at his home. Mr.
Harbison was born Aug. 28, 1900, at Etterville, a son of Charles W. and
Elizabeth Dorl Harbison. He was married May 15, 1924, at Eldon, to
Burdie Hoskins, who survives at the home.
He was a member of the Union Baptist Church, Mexico. He lived in the
Etterville community for a number of years before moving to Martinsburg
in 1971.

one brother, Wesley Harbison, Eldon; two sisters, Mrs. Rena Crisp,

survives at the home. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of Snows
Catholic Church in Mary's Home and the St. Anthony Sunshine Gals.
