Obituary: Jefferson City News Tribune, Sunday, July 23, 1995
Taisy M. Downing, 92, Eldon, died Friday in the Eldon home of her
daughter-in-law, Nancy Downing. She was born Dec. 8, 1902, in Morgan
County, a daughter of John R. and Flora Mae Jobe Madole. She was
married Feb. 4, 1927, to Clyde Downing, who died on Nov. 12, 1982. She
was a school teacher and had worked at the Tweedie Shoe Factory.
Survivors include one sister, Lois Deffenbaugh, Versailles, and a
granddaughter. Two sons, Wendell Downing and Billy Don Downing,
preceded her in death.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home,
Versailles. The Rev. Gene Cain will officiate. Burial will be in
Greenmore Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Barnett. Visitation will be from
5-7 p.m. today.

Sarah A. Fercho, 77, Eldon, died Friday at Lake Ozark General Hospital.
She was born June 4, 1918, at Kaiser, a daughter of Joseph F. and
Marinda Wright George. She was a homemaker and a member of Hickory
Point Baptist Church.
Survivors include: two brothers, Joseph F. George, Iberia, and Charles
L. George, Barnett; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The body will be cremated under the direction of Griswold Kayes Funeral
Home, Eldon. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Marie E. Bax, 76, St. Elizabeth, died Friday at the University of
Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics. She was born Dec. 4, 1919, at
St. Thomas, a daughter of William and Elsie Martin Bock. She was
married in 1941 at Meta to Roman Sabalka, who died in 1959. On Jan. 2,
1960, she was married to Theodore Bax, who died June 27, 1990.
She was a cook at St. Elizabeth R-4 School for over 20 years. She was a
member of VFW Post 1000 Ladies Auxiliary, Independence; WPFA in St.
Elizabeth, and St. Lawrence Catholic Church, St. Elizabeth.
Survivors include: a foster son, Harold Brockes, St. Thomas; three
brothers, Louis Bock, Meta, Willard Bock Fenton, and Joe Bock, Lee’s
Summit; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church,
St. Elizabeth. The Rev. John Degnan will officiate. Burial will be in
the St. Lawrence Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at Rekus
Funeral Home, St. Elizabeth, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Robert L. Blair, 63, Eldon, died Sunday at St. Marys Health Center. He
was born Aug 10, 1931, in Nodaway County, a son of David and Lois
Hartman Blair. He was married Feb. 14, 1994, in Tuscumbia, to Carol S.
Orr, who survives at the home.
A resident of the Lake area since his retirement, he had lived in St.
Joseph. He was employed as an elementary school principal.
Other survivors include: three daughters, Linda White, Okinawa, Japan,
Lora Goff, Ft. Leonard Wood, and Lisa Brown, Newport News, Va.; one son,
Robert Blair, Axtell, Kan.; one sister, Yvonne Hill, Barnard; one
brother, Francis Blair, Barnard; four stepchildren and six
grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. at Greenmore Memorial Gardens,
Barnett. The Rev. Clinton F. Wofford will officiate. Visitation will
be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

Edna Marie Doerhoff, 73, St. Elizabeth, died Monday at St. Marys Health
Center. She was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Marys Home, a daughter of Fred
and Dora Schulte Berendzen. She was married May 25, 1949, in Marys
Home, to Norman Doerhoff, who survives at the home.
She graduated from Eugene High School in 1939 and received a bachelor’s
in education from Central Missouri State University. She taught in
rural schools in Miller County and taught business education in the St.
Elizabeth R-IV School District for 43 years. She also taught CCD for 10
years. After her retirement, she volunteered at the school and at St.
Elizabeth Nursing Home.
She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, St. Elizabeth, the St.
Ann’s Sodality, Central Missouri State Alumni Association, Missouri
State Retired Teachers Association, Miller County Retired Teachers
Association, Public School Retirement System, National Association for
Family and Community Education, Helping Hands Homemakers Club and
Show-Me Conference Business Educators.
Other survivors include: seven sons, Rick Doerhoff and Kevin Doerhoff,
both of St. Elizabeth; Ron Doerhoff of Bonne Terre, Randy Doerhoff,
Roger Doerhoff and Jerry Doerhoff, all of Jefferson City; and Jeff
Doerhoff, St. Charles; three daughters, Sue Doerhoff-Thoreson, Columbia,
Kim Yocom, Kansas City, and Ann Wilde, Jefferson City; two brothers,
Norbert Berendzen, Jefferson City, Clarence Berendzen, Marys Home; two
sisters, Evelyn Speedy, Arvada, Colo., Mary Ann DeCook, Jefferson City;
16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
The Rev. John Degnan and Msgr. Gerald Poelker will officiate. Burial
will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m.
Wednesday at the St. Elizabeth Community Center, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Tuesday, August 1, 1995
Frederick Lee Pope, 84, California, died Sunday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Memorial Campus. He was born Dec. 1, 1910, in Brumley, a
son of Arthur M. and Martha E. McDowell Pope. He was married Nov. 21,
1933, in Sedalia, to Ruth Elizabeth Hert, who died March 27, 1994.
He graduated from Old Linn Creek High School and attended the University
of Missouri-Columbia. He worked at the A.M. Pope & Sons Lumber Co. in
the Lake Ozark area, and later owned and operated a service station in
Houston, Tex. He was then employed in the hardware business in Houston
before retiring in 1975. He also was a farmer. He was a member of the
Methodist faith.
Survivors include: one son, Bert Pope, Hot Springs Village, Ark.; two
daughters, Donna Longan, California, and Patricia Frantz, Houston; nine
grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
one daughter, Sue Ann Pope, in 1946.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral
Chapel, California. The Rev. Roy Sparks and the Rev. Juanita Roberts
will officiate. Burial will be in California City Cemetery. Visitation
will be from 6-8 p.m. today.

Floyd L. Feltrop, 73, Tuscumbia, died Tuesday at his home. He was born
April 1, 1922, in Eugene, a son of Albert and Bessie Lovell Feltrop.
A lifelong resident of Cole and Miller counties, he received a degree in
engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia. A Marine Corps
veteran of World War II, he was self-employed as a well driller.
Survivors include two sisters, Ann Young, Kansas City, and Frances
Lampe, Orlando, Fla.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at
Eldon City Cemetery. The Rev. Eldon Myers will officiate. Visitation
will be from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday at Griswold-Kays Funeral Home,
Eldon.

J.D. Scrivner, 57, Barnett, died Thursday at St. Marys Health Center.
He was born Sept 9, 1937, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of Ernest and Lela Opie
Scrivner.
He lived in the Eldon area most of his life. He worked as a dry wall
installer and was a member of Carpenters’ Local 945 for 37 years. He
was a member of the Assembly of God and Baptist churches.
Survivors include: three sons, Bill Scrivner and Steve Scrivner, both
of Barnett, and Rodney Scrivner, Jefferson City; two daughters,
Staphanie Scrivner, Jefferson City, and Diane Scrivner, Russellville;
four brothers, Jewell Scrivner, Vallejo, Calif., James Scrivner and
Larry Scrivner, both of Versailles, and Forrest Scrivner, Osage Beach;
two sisters, Pauline Geiger and Byrlene Connell, both of Eldon. One
son, Darrell Scrivner, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. Dan Wakefield will officiate. Burial will be in Big Rock Cemetery,
Barnett. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today. Memorials are

James Elmer Karr, 103, Iberia, died Tuesday at Lake of the Ozarks
General Hospital. He was born Oct. 3, 1891, near Iberia, the son of
Everett and Jane Jackson Karr. He was married June 16, 1923, to Frances
Kinder, who died Oct. 17, 1936. He was married July 16, 1938, in Eldon,
to Gladys Wilson Howser, who died April 20, 1992.
A World War I Army veteran, he taught in the rural schools of Curry and
Hickory Point. He served as Iberia postmaster from 1946-1961. He was a
charter member of Honey Springs Baptist Church near Iberia, where he
taught Sunday school for more than 80 years and served as deacon for
more than 50 years. He was a member of Iberia American Legion Post 105.
Survivors include: two sons, Charles Karr, Marcellus, Mich., and Howard
Karr, Kansas City; two stepsons, Ray Howser, Kaiser, and Tommy Howser,
Stoutland; three daughters, Emma Bishop, Longview Texas, Eula Mae
Powell, Littleton, Colo., and Donna Sue Wisner, El Dorado Springs; one
stepdaughter, Joretta Allee, Jackson; one sister, Verna Wells, Rolla; 22
grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The
Rev. Charles Caldwell and the Rev. Dennis Nichols will officiate.
Burial will be in Hickory Point Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8

Jennie Doerhoff, 74, Marys Home, died Tuesday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Still Campus. She was born May 16, 1921, in Marys Home, a
daughter of Pete and Mary Francis Beutle Bungart. She was married Oct.
2, 1944, in Marys Home, to William J. Doerhoff, who died Oct. 4, 1972.
A lifelong resident of the Marys Home area, she was a homemaker. She
was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Marys Home, the
Altar Sodality, the Legion of Mary and the Marys Home Senior Citizens.
Survivors include: two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Stegman and Debra Sue
Luebbering, both of Marys Home; two sisters, Alvena Hollenbeck, Marys
Home, and Julieann Carver, Jefferson City; two brothers, Jerome Bungart,
Raytown, and Ambrose Bungart, Jefferson City; and six grandchildren.
Two sons preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic

Arthur Dean Wall, 66, Eldon, died Friday at his home. He was born April
21, 1929, in Granite City, Ill., the son of Jesse and Katrine Barr Wall.
He was married Feb. 9, 1969, in Las Vegas, to Norma J. Freeman, who
survives of the home.
A self-employed roofer, he lived the last 12 years in Eldon. He was a
member of Christ’s Church, Kaiser, and was an Air Force veteran of the
Korean War.
Other survivors include: two sons, Michael D. Wall, Eldon, and Jeffrey
S. Wall, Branson; one daughter, Kathleen P. Cox, Indianapolis, Ind.;
three stepsons, Robert Sifuentes, Linn Creek, Michael Sifuentes, Palm
Springs, Calif., and Rick Sifuentes, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; and 10
grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillilps Funeral Home, Eldon.

Eunice B. Connell, 86, Jefferson City, died Tuesday at Capital Region
Medical Center-Still Campus. She was born Oct. 8, 1908, in Iberia, a
daughter of Joseph and Frona Surface Bailey. She was married in June
1934, in Tuscumbia, to John Edward Connell who died in 1984.
A homemaker, she was employed by Oberman’s and Tweedie’s Shoe Co. until
her retirement.
Survivors include: four sons, Bill Connell, Centertown, Herschel
Connell, Lake Ozark, and Charles Connell and Roy Connell, both of
Jefferson City; two daughters, Katherine Colvin and Edna Turner, both of
Jefferson City; 21 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and six
great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at New Hope Baptist Church, near
Marion. The Rev. Daniel Doolin will officiate. Burial will be in New

William N. “Bill” Wyrick, 91, Eldon, died Friday at Miller County
Nursing Home, Tuscumbia. He was born Dec. 7, 1903, at Etterville, a son
of William N. and Vertie Templeton Wyrick. On Feb. 19, 1930, he was
married at Eldon to the former Pearl B. Reed, who survives of the home.
A lifelong resident of the Etterville and Eldon areas, he worked as an
auto mechanic for many years. He was a member of the Etterville
Christian Church.
Other survivors include: two sons, Martin Wyrick and Robert Wyrick,
both of Eldon; a daughter, Jean Bradshaw, Eldon; two grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon,

Ruth R. Williams, 89, Eldon, died Thursday at Eldon Health Care Center.
She was born Dec. 24, 1905, in High Point, a daughter of Monroe and
Myrtle Laue Amos. She was married Dec. 24, 1929, in High Point, to Gail
R. Williams, who died Dec. 15, 1971.
A homemaker, she lived in Miller County all her life. She was a member
of First Baptist Church, Eldon; the Order of the Eastern Star; and the
Manning Willing Workers Extension Club. She was employed as a cook for
the Eldon public schools for 20 years.
Survivors include: one daughter, Della Fern Fry, Eldon; one sister,
Lula Fern Brown, Kansas City, Kan.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. Bro.
Donald Renken and Br. Joel Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in
Eldon City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday.

Bruce James Patterson, 36, Rocky Mount, died Saturday in Morgan County
as the result of a drowning accident. He was born July 25, 1959, in
Grain Valley, a son of Joseph and Lucy Evelyn Patterson. His father
survives in Brumley.
He lived in Florida for seven years and returned to Missouri in 1992.
He had worked for the Independent Stave Company in Eldon and in the
logging industry as an independent logger.
Other survivors include four brothers, Paul Patterson, Lake Ozark,
Kelvey Patterson and Bryan Patterson, both of Tuscumbia, and John
Patterson, Bolivar; and one sister, Debby Huddleston, Brumley.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia. The
Rev. Gene Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Hickory Point
Cemetery near Iberia. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday.

Benny Byron Hughes, 88, Iberia, died Saturday in the Miller County
Nursing Home, Tuscumbia. He was born on Feb. 9, 1907, in Maries County,
a son of James and Minnie Branson Hughes. In 1932, he was married to
Bertha Dickens, who died on Oct. 19, 1977. On Feb. 5, 1982, he was
married to Orphia Keeth, who survives of the home. He owned and
operated the Western Auto Store in Dixon for many years.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Glynnis Parker, Tahlequah,
Okla., and Alice Lucas, Granite City, Ill.; a son, Doug Hughes, Arnold,
Md.; a sister, Margie McKinnon, Rolla; two brothers, James Hughes,
Springfield and Roy Hughes, Tulsa, Okla., three grandchildren, four
step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, and five
step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Long Funeral Home, Dixon,
with the Rev. Raymond McClary officiating. Burial will be in the Dixon

Charles E. Kirkwood, 71, Princeton, N.J., died Friday at Princeton
Medical Center. He was born March 30, 1924, in Fort Sam Houston, Texas,
a son of Robert and Laura Smith Kirkwood. He was married to Bessie Lee
Goforth, who survives at the home.
He graduated from the Iberia Academy in 1945 and from the University of
Missouri. He worked at Uniroyal Corporation for 25 years before
retiring as plant manager of several Uniroyal installations. He worked
for Amtico (Congoleum) Corp., Trenton, N.J. for the past 13 years.
Other survivors include: one son, Ronn Kirkwood, Evanston, Ill.; one
daughter, Frankee Trombley, Arnold, Md.; one sister, Elizabeth
Miodunski, San Antonio; and three grandchildren. One son, Charles C.
Kirkwood, died May 22, 1993. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at
Brays Advent Christian Church, near Iberia. Pastor Bill Fox will
officiate. Burial will be in Brays Cemetery. Arrangements are under
the direction of Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia.

Ollie Mace Atkison, 83, Tuscumbia, died Friday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Memorial Campus. She was born Dec. 26, 1911, at Linn Creek, a
daughter of George Thomas and Margaret Elizabeth Papen Mace. She was
married April 6, 1935, at Jefferson City, to Hilgar C. Atkison, who died
July 11, 1993.
She was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, serving 30 years in
Tuscumbia before she retired in 1974. She was a member of the First
Baptist Church, Tuscumbia. She was a member of the board of directors
for the Miller County Historical Society; the Oasis Extension Club and
senior citizens’ activities in Tuscumbia.
Survivors include: one foster daughter, Kathy Sims, Kansas City; one
brother, Harrison Mace, Tuscumbia; and two sisters, Cleo Sartoris, Holts
Summit, and Mae LaGrand, St. Charles.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church,
Tuscumbia, with the Rev. Don Bilbary officiating. Burial will be in the
Tuscumbia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the
Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. Memorials are suggested to the First

Richard P. “Dick” Loyd, 53, Eldon, died Monday at Capital Region Medical
Center-Memorial Campus. He was born Feb. 14, 1942, in Independence, a
son of Paul Q. and Irene Isabelle Aston Loyd. He was married Aug 31,
1968, in Macks Creek, to Sandra Markwell, who survives at the home.
A Lake area resident for 30 years, he was employed as a dispatcher for
the Miller County Sheriff’s Department. He had also worked as an
accountant for 30 years. He was a member of the Miller County Ambulance
Board and was formerly a member of the Rocky Mount Lions Club.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Kimberly Brewner, Eldon, and
Krisanna Loyd, North Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, Ron Loyd, Bangor,
Maine, Randy Jones, Denver; one sister, Kay Birdsong, Eldon; and four
grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.
The remains will be cremated. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m.

Opal Glendon Harrison, 88, Olean, died Saturday at Eldon Healthcare
Center. She was born April 29, 1907, in Moniteau County, a daughter of
William J. and Perlina Farris Bartsch. On March 4, 1930, she was
married at Kansas City to Forest Ray Harrison, who died on Sept. 10,
1966.
She had been a resident of the Olean community since 1917, where her
family operated the Olean Telephone Exchange until 1945. A 1928
graduate of Olean High School, she attended Central Business College,
Kansas City.
She had worked at the Olean Post Office. She was a longtime member of
the Olean Christian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for more
than 40 years.
Survivors include: a daughter, Betty J. Roark, Olean; a son, Billy R.
Harrison, Belleville, Ill., two grandchildren and three
step-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon,
with Don E. Renken and Jim Kruse officiating. Burial will be in Olean
Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today. Memorials have been

Clyde Lloyd “Bud” Love, 71, Vichy, died Friday at his residence. He was
born Feb 11, 1924, in Maries County, a son of Charles and Lucy Ragan
Love. On Jan. 1, 1969, he was married at Iberia to Vernetta Wyrick, who

James S. “Jimmie” Stricklan, 76, Dixon, died Monday at Phelps County
Regional Medical center, Rolla. He was born May 16, 1919, in Dixon, a
son of Coad and Parthenia Duncan Stricklan. He was married Nov. 23,
1946, at Dixon, to Pauline L. Woody, who survives at the home.
He farmed and drove a school bus for the Vienna School District for 34
years. He was a member of the Wheeler Christian Church near Dixon.

The Rev. James E. Miller, 64, Iberia, died Sunday at John Cochran V.A.
Hospital, St. Louis. He was born Sept 2, 1930, in Granite City, Ill., a
son of Ernest and Mildred Stephens Miller. He was married to Norma
Gardner, who survives at the home.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was held in a Korean prisoner
of war camp. He worked at Laclede Steel in Alton, Ill., for 33 years
before retiring in 1986. He was a former member of Bethel Chapel,
Granite City, and had been serving as pastor of the Full Gospel
Tabernacle, Iberia.

A U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he was employed as a

A resident of the Eldon area since 1969, he was an ordained minister
for a nondenominational church.

Lodge, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Scottish Rite, and the
Moolah Shrine Temple, all in St. Louis.
Survivors include one brother, Ellis D. Skaggs, St. Louis, and one
sister, Reba Manes, Springfield.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brays Advent Christian Church. The

He was born Nov. 9, 1919, in Miller County, a son of Alonzo and Leora

Robbins, who survives at the home.
He was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church, Barnett. He was
a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was employed with
Benson Lumber Company, Eldon, for 38 years and was manager for 20 years
before he retired in 1984. He was a member of the Eldon Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 2442 and the American Legion Post 229 in Lake Ozark.

Indianapolis, to W. Shannon Frame, who died Feb. 10, 1985.
A homemaker, she had lived in the Eldon area since 1929. She was a

the Arrowhead Garden Club.

Center-Still Campus. He was born July 30, 1942, in St. Louis, a son of

Pace, survive in Jefferson City. He was married Aug 14, 1965 in Eldon,
to Kay Bunch, who survives of the home.
A Vietnam era Air force veteran, he owned and operated Pace’s Clothing
Store in Eldon for 10 years. He worked as a supply manager for the
Department of Corrections for the past 10 years. A state licensed
basketball referee, he officiated in central Missouri for 25 years. He
was a member of VFW Post 2442, Eldon, and of First Baptist Church,
Eldon.

Gina Pace of the home; one brother, George D. Pace, Mesa, Ariz.; and

Paul Helvey, 79, Eldon, died Saturday at the Lake of the Ozarks General
Hospital, Osage Beach. He was born July 14, 1916, in Centerville, the
son of Lemreau and Almeda Wilson Helvey. He was married Nov. 8, 1939,
in St. Charles, to Lois A. Bowles, who survives at the home.
A farmer, he lived in Eldon since 1988. He was a member of the First
Baptist Church, Eldon, where he was a church deacon and a former men’s
Sunday school teacher.
Other survivors include: one son, Billy Dean Helvey, Eldon; one
daughter, Mary Susan Niemeyer, Columbia; and four grandchildren.

Herschel W. “Buck” Bishop, 58, Eldon, died Thursday in Eldon. He was
born Sept. 15, 1937, in Miller County, a son of Herschel L. and
Lourraine J. Bilyeu Bishop. He was married Dec. 19, 1959, in Aurora
Springs to Patsy Jane Johnson, who survives at the home.
He was employed by Tri-County Tractor Sales and had been a Volkswagen
mechanic for 25 years. He lived in Miller and Morgan counties
throughout his life. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God
in Versailles.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Shona Turpin, Rocky Mount; one
son, Warren C. Bishop, Eldon; two brothers, Forrest Bishop and Tex

Mildred M. Gerhardt, 82, Eldon, died Saturday in the Miller County
Nursing Home. She was born April 18, 1913, in Eldon, a daughter of Paul
G. and Alice E. Hollenbeck Apperson. She was married May 16, 1948, in
Lake Ozark to Alva G. Gerhardt, who died March 14, 1970.
Mrs. Gerhardt worked as a bookkeeper for the state of California. She
was a member of the First Christian Church, Eldon, and was active in the
Christian Women’s Fellowship orgnizatino at the church. She was past
president of the Evening Euterpean Club. She lived in various locations
throughout the country with her husband before returning to Eldon in
1966. She is survived by several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. David Grousnick will officiate. Burial will be in Eldon City
Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials are

Leona M. Cartner, 83, Eldon, died Sunday at Capital Region Medical
Center-southwest. She was born July 11, 1912, in Bagnell, the daughter
of Elzie E. and Jennie Woolley Gier. She as married Nov. 2, 1929, in
Bagnell to James L. Cartner, who died June 24, 1971.
A lifetime resident of Miller County, she and her husband owned and
operated Ozark Tackle and Supply. She was a member of First Baptist
Church, Eldon, and was a member of the Esrudoma Sunday school class.
She was a member of the Eldon Senior Citizens organization.
Survivors include: one son, Bob R.Cartner, Eldon, two daughters, Betty
L. Harbison, Eldon, and Patricia Rowles, Springfield; two sisters, Neva
Pearon and Nadine Opie, both of Eldon; four brothers, Clint Gier, Eldon;

Center Southwest. He was born Nov. 28, 1923, in Miller County, a son of

J. Cook, who died Aug 18, 1984.
An Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he worked as a laborer in the
Union Local 296 in Molalla, Ore., until his retirement in 1984. He
lived in Oregon for 30 years before returning to Missouri in 1989.
Survivors include: one daughter, Gracie King, Forks, Wash.; and one
sister, Berniece Kuoppala, Tuscumbia.

was born Feb. 25, 1917, in Eldon, a daughter of Grover and Anna Moss
Webb. She was married in 1942 in Washoe County, Nev., to Harvey B.
Kelsey, who died in 1977.
A graduate of Eldon public schools, she was a homemaker. She worked as
a receptionist for Dr. James Allee, and was employed by the American Red
Cross during World War II. She had lived in the state of California
before moving back to Eldon in 1978.
She was a member of the Ninth Street Christian Church, Eldon, the
Sorosis Club and the Hospice of Jefferson City and Mid Missouri.
Survivors include: one son, Harvey Bruce Kelsey, Albuquerque, N.M.; one
daughter, Kimberly LaMontine, state of California; one brother, Warren

Center. She was born Aug 12, 1992, in Tuscumbia, the daughter of George
P. and Martha A. Melton Swanson. She was married Oct. 24, 1928, in
Eldon, to Milton K. Artz, who died Sept 28, 1974. She lived with her
husband in Dalhart, Texas, El Reno, Okla., and Kansas City, Kans., prior
to his retirement from Rock Island Railroad. They then moved to the
Artz farm near Eldon. She lived in Eldon from 1974-1995, when she moved
to Springfield.
Before her marriage, she taught in Bagnell, Jim Henry, Lurton and Bear
schools in Miller County. She was a member of the First Christian
Church in Eldon and the Christian women’s fellowship. She is survived
by one sister, Clarice Shaw, Shawnee Mission, Kan.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church. The

was born March 5, 1921, in Brays, a daughter of William A. and Mary E.

Mace, who survives at the home.
She taught school in Iberia and the surrounding area for 38 years. She
was a member of the Brays Advent Christian Church and the Iberia Order
of the Eastern Star 537. She was a member of the KKI and the Iberia
Garden Club.

Leavenworth, Kan., to Paul Van Bebber, who died in September 1969.
She was employed as office manager for St. Joseph Parish and Immaculate
Conception Church, and was bookkeeper for KRCG-TV. She was a member of
St. Joseph Cathedral and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She
served on the Jefferson City Park Board and helped establish Memorial
Park swimming pool. She was past president of Hawthorn Garden Club and
a charter member of Meadow Lake Acres Country Club.
Survivors include: two daughters, Joyce Koecher, Evansville, Wis., and
Suzanne Van Bebber, Mountain View, Calif.; two sons, Jack Van Bebber,

insurance agent with Farm Bureau for the past four years. He was a
member of First Baptist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Kenneth L. Martin, 69, Eldon, died Friday at Lake Ozark General
Hospital, Osage Beach. He was born Jan 2, 1926, at Eldon, a son of
Riley S. and Ida Hicks Martin. He was married to Iris M. Hickman, who
died on Sept 18, 1988. He later married Sandra Martin, who survives of
the home.
He was raised in Eldon and moved to Kansas City, Kan., where he worked
for the Kansas City, Kan., street department for 15 years before moving
back to Eldon in 1968. He then worked for the Eldon City Park
Department and the School of the Osage, Lake Ozark.
Other survivors include: a stepson, Gerald Wilson, Kansas City, Kan.;
three stepdaughters, Donna Tennal, Kansas City, Kan., and Judy McGuire
and Kathy Lister, both of Camdenton; a sister, Opal Allen, Kansas City,
Kan., and several step grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Riley Lamm Cemetery, Eldon, with
Jim McGowin officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today and 10
a.m.-noon at Griswold-Kays Chapel, Eldon.

Stella Marie Farrell, 67, Muskogee, Okla., formerly of Tuscumbia, died
Tuesday at Muskogee Regional Medical Center. She was born June 17,
1929, in Tuscumbia, a daughter of Clarence and Flora Burks Wyrick. She
was married to Beverly Farrell, who preceded her in death.
She lived in Muskogee for the past 20 years. She worked as a nurse’s
aide at Miller County Nursing Home.
Survivors include: three sons, Ernest Farrell, Eddie Farrell and Sammy
Farrell, all of Muskogee; one daughter, Donna Hull, Kansas City; three
sisters, Della Hull, Mesa, Ariz., and Addie Wyrick and Nancy Wyrick,
both of Tuscumbia; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon. The
Rev. Eldon Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery,
Tuscumbia. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today.

Freda Constance Kehr Beckman, 85, Longmont, Colo., died Oct. 20 in
Longmont. She was born Feb 27, 1910, in Miller County, the daughter of
Fred F. “Doc” and Cora Mae Houston Kehr. She was married June 24, 1931,
at Eldon to Kermit William Beckman, who died Oct. 16, 1984.
She attended schools in Eldon, Bolivar, Versailles and Jefferson City.
She worked at Oberman’s Clothing Manufacturing Company in Jefferson City
as a stenographer. She was a member of the Rebecca’s in Kansas, and had
lived in Wichita, Kan.
Survivors include one daughter, Lois Dorman, Longmont, and two grandsons.
Private funeral services and cremation were at Howe Mortuary, Longmont.
Burial was in Eldon Cemetery.

Warden U. Purl, 38, Eldon, died Thursday at Lake Ozark General Hospital,
Osage Beach. He was born Aug. 5, 1957, at Tuscumbia, a son of Vincel E.
and Bertha Bailey Purl.
He was a production technician at Solo Optical Co., Eldon, for 15 years.
He was a lifelong resident of Miller and Morgan counties. He was a
member of Lighthouse Fellowship, Eldon.
Survivors include: two sisters, Mildred Concoran, Huntsville, Ala., and
Helen Mann, Columbia; and three brothers, Rodger Purl, Higginsville, and
Herman Purl and Ivah Purl, both of Eldon.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lighthouse Fellowship Church,
Eldon, with Raymond Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Big Rock
Cemetery, Barnett. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday and 9-11 a.m.
Monday at Griswold-Kays Chapel, Eldon.
