Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Monday, April 4, 1983
Clemens J. Otto, 72, of 1201 St. Mary’s Blvd.* died Sunday morning at
his home following a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 2, 1910, at St.
Anthony, the son of Hieronymus A. and Anna M. Schepers Otto. On Sept.
3, 1938, he was married at Jefferson City to Anna L. Otto who survives
of the home.
Mr. Otto attended St. Anthony’s schools and was a member of St. Peter’s
Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society, and Carpenters Local No. 495.
He was employed as a carpenter until retirement in 1971.
Other survivors include four sons, Jerome J. Otto, Philadelphia, Penn.,
John C. Otto, 207 Landwehr Hills*, Joseph C. Otto, 604 Kansas St.*, and
Gary J. Otto, St. Anthony; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Kempf,
Boonville, Mrs. Barbara Martin, 1806 Bassman St.*, Mrs. Peggy Stoving,
Florissant, and Mrs. Ann Dake, 1101 S. Country Club Dr.*; three
brothers, George J. Otto, St. Anthony, Norbert J. Otto and Herbert D.
Otto, both of St. Elizabeth; and 17 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peters
Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin Gormley officiating. Burial will be
in Resurrection Cemetery*. Memorials may be made to the Helias
Foundation. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at
Buescher Memorial Home with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Thursday, April 7, 1983
Cletties Hees, 84, Eldon, died Wednesday at Memorial Community Hospital.
Mr. Hees was born Jan. 17, 1899, at Proctor, a son of Albert and Ida
Jobe Hees. On May 12, 1923, he was married to Mary Grace Foote, who
died April 20, 19161. He later was married to Dora Phelan, who survives
at the home.
He was an engineer with the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 45 years
before retiring in 1964. He had lived in the Eldon area since 1960. He
was a member of the Eldon First Baptist Church, the Brotherhood of
Locomotive Firemen and Engineers, Jefferson Lodge No. 43 AF & AM, Eldon
Chapter 210 Order of Eastern Star, Karim Khan Shrine and Eldon Lodge
I.O.O.F.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Lois Hayes, Jefferson City;
one brother, Ralph Hees, High Point; three sisters, Mrs. Leta Bunch,
Jefferson City, Mrs. Lela Barbour, Waynesville, Mrs. Fay Scott,
California; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home,
Eldon, with the Rev. James Westmoreland officiating. Burial will be at
the Eldon City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the first Baptist Church at
Eldon.

Obituary: Jefferson City Post Tribune, Monday, February 7, 1983
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday for Clarence M. Currence,
93, Eldon, who died Thursday at the Smithville Convalescent Center,
Smithville. Services were held at the First Baptist Church, Eldon, with
the Rev. James Westmoreland and the Rev. Arnim Ray officiating. Burial
was in the Eldon City Cemetery.
Mr. Currence was born March 9, 1889, at Eldon a son of George B. and
Sarah M. Beeson Currence. He was married March 12, 1911, at Olean, to
Elsie E. Rea, who died July 27, 1982.
Mr. Currence was a member of the First Baptist Church, Eldon. He was a
retired barber, who started barbering in Olean in 1910. He moved to
Eldon in 1921 and continued to work as a barber until his retirement in
1955. He is survived by a son, Roy M. Currence, Gladstone, four
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

David E. Currence, 91, of Eldon, died Friday at the Osage Manor Nursing
Home in Eldon. He was born Jan. 15, 1892 at Olean, the son of Joseph
and Sarah Bartlett Currence. He was married Sept. 30, 1916 at Spring
Garden to Opal Arlene Lunceford, who survives of the home. A lifetime
resident of Miller County, he was a retired farmer. HE belonged to the
Greenridge Baptist Church.
Other survivors include: four sons, Estel Currence, Howard Currence and
Dale Currence, all of Eldon, and Wilfred Currence, Barnett; 16
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services, under the direction of the Phillips Funeral Home in
Eldon, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at the Greenridge Baptist
Church, the Rev. Cellis Crum officiating. Burial will be in the
Greenmore Memorial Gardens in Barnett. Memorial contributions are
suggested to the Kidney Foundation or the Greenridge Baptist Church.

Walter Ansell Gentzsch, 68, Eldon, died Thursday at Charles E. Still
Hospital (Jefferson City). Mr. Gentzsch was born Nov. 13, 1914, at
California, a son of Walter Henry and Alta Floy Apperson Gentzsch. He
was married Feb. 15, 1961, to Margaret Kidwell, who survives at the
home.
He was a member of the Eldon United Methodist Church. He was employed
as a carpenter in the construction business and he lived in the Eldon
area most of his life.
Other survivors include: one stepson, Ron Brown, Lee’s Summit; two
stepdaughters, Beverly Skiles, Taiwan, and Anita Deffenbaugh, Pomona,
Calif.; two sisters, Phyllis E. Cooney, Bedford, Va., and Gayle McGowan
New Carlisle, Ind.; and 13 grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Eldon City
Cemetery with the Rev. Calvin St. Clair officiating. Visitation will be
after 4:30 p.m. today at the Phillips Funeral Home, Eldon.

Elizabeth Beck, 89, of St. Elizabeth, died Wednesday at the Villa Marie
Skilled Facility in Jefferson City. She was born March 11, 1894 at
Henley, the daughter of Henry and Agnes Loethen Adrian. She was married
May 2, 1923 at Jefferson City to Joseph Beck, who died March 29, 1948.
She was a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church of St. Elizabeth,
and a member of the St. Ann’s Sodality of the church.
Survivors include: five sons, Alfred Beck, Kansas City, Ted Beck,
Agawam, Mass., Ray Beck, Columbia, and Leonard Beck and Norbert Beck,
both of St. Elizabeth; one daughter, Mrs. Pauline Huhman, Tuscumbia;
three sisters, Mrs. Rose Schmidt, Mrs. Clara Schmidt and Mrs. Bertha
Beck, all of St. Thomas; 39 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Stevinson-Mossman
Funeral Home in St. Elizabeth. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Saturday at the St. Lawrence Catholic church. Burial will be in the St.
Lawrence Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the
Stevinson-Mossman Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services were held Monday in Bartlesville, Okla., for Harvey
Junior Long, 59, of Barnsdall, Okla., who died Friday. Mr. Long was
born on May 4, 1923, in Barnsdall, Okla., a son of Harvey Nicholas and
Mary Jane Witt Long. He was married July 8, 1954, in Dewey, Okla., to
Billie Jo Mantor who survives at the home. Mr. Long was a long time
employee of the National Zinc Company in Dewey.
Other survivors include one son, Kenneth Harvey Long, Dewey, Okla., two
daughters, Mrs. Carol Jane Notley, Dewey, Okla., and Miss Patricia Ann
Long of the home; five brothers, Claude Long, Persing, Okla., Delmer A.
Long and V.E. “Gene” Long, both of Brumley, Jack Long, Bartlesville,
Okla., and Don W. Long, Hallsville; four sisters, Mrs. Esther Taylor,
Fort Smith, Ark., Mrs. Daisy Shalbot and Mrs. Doris Luttrell, both of
Brumley, and Mrs. Betty Key, Dewey, Okla.; and three grandchildren.
Burial was in the Ethel Reece Cemetery under the direction of the Arnold
Moore Funeral Residence.

Mrs. Ersa R. Longan, 79, Eldon, died Wednesday at a Wellsville nursing
home. She was born Jan. 12, 1904, at Rocky Mount, a daughter of Joseph
and Mary Ann Cochran Wood.
Survivors include: a brother, Andrew J. Wood, Cochees, Kan.; and a
sister, Mrs. Stella Bunch, Eldon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Griswold-Kays
Funeral Home, Eldon, with the Rev. Tommy Bunch officiating. Burial will
be in the Union Cemetery at Rocky Mount. Visitation will be from 1-9

Mrs. Mayme June Owens, 58, of Iberia, died Saturday at the University of
Missouri-Columbia Medical Center. Mrs. Owens was born May 18, 1924, at
Skiatook, Okla., a daughter of James Gale and Mary E. Robinson Ricker.
On Dec. 31, 1937, she was married at Camdenton to F.W. “Bill” Owens, who
survives of the home. Mrs. Owens was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Other survivors include: four sons, William C. Owens and David R.
Owens, both of Mack’s Creek, James Leroy Owens, Iberia, and Richard Lee
Owens, Brumley; five daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Goldsberry, Fountain, Fla.,
Mrs. Phillis McDaniel, Eldon, Mrs. Maxine Fay Happe, Wardsville, Mrs.
Barbara Nations, Mack’s Creek, and Mrs. Gladys Lewis, Weatherford,
Okla.; a half-brother, Clonnie Ricker, Wapata, Wash.; 24 grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Stevinson-Mossman

Mrs. Rose M. Strope, 81, of St. Thomas, died Sunday evening at the St.
Elizabeth Manor Nursing Home in St. Elizabeth. She had been in failing
health for several years. She was born Aug. 31, 1901, at St. Elizabeth,
the daughter of John and Lucy Verhoff Borgmeyer. She was married at St.
Thomas to Theodore Kroll, who preceded her in death. She was then
married at St. Thomas to Louis Stope, who also preceded her in death.
She attended St. Elizabeth schools, and was a member of the St. Thomas
the Apostle Catholic Church and the Ladies Sodality of the church. She
had been employed as the switchboard operator for the St. Thomas
Telephone Company until her retirement in 1968. Survivors include one
son, Robert Kroll, Louisville, Ky.; and four grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at the Buescher Memorial Home in St. Thomas
today at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the St. Thomas
the Apostle Catholic Church Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael
Wilbers officiating. Burial will be in the St. Thomas Parish Cemetery.
Visitation at the funeral home will be today from 6-8 p.m.

Gladback of Tuscumbia, died Tuesday at the home. He was born Feb. 9,
1983, at Tuscumbia.

Mrs. Elizabeth Koerber Redel, 83, Vienna, died Sunday at the Christian
Old People’s Home in Ferguson. She had been a patient there for two
years. She was born Feb. 8, 1900, at St. Elizabeth, the daughter of
Jake and Margaret Holzer Weidinger. She was married Oct. 3, 1922, to
George J. Koerber, who died Nov. 28, 1969. She was then married on Aug.
2, 1971, to David George Redel, who died Sept. 30, 1980. She was a
member of the Visitation Catholic Church and the St. Ann’s Sodality, in
Vienna.
Survivors include: two sons, Albert Koerber, Florissant, and Francis
Koerber, Hazelwood; one daughter, Mrs. Joan Frank, Hazelwood; one
brother, Philip Weidinger, Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie
Jurgensmeyer and Rose Weidinger, both of Columbia; and eight
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Visitation
Catholic Church with the Rev. Don Antweiler officiating. Burial will be
in the Visitation Cemetery. A rosary will be recited today at 7:30 p.m.

Leonard C. Morgan, 70, of Eugene, died Sunday at the Fulton State
Hospital. He was born Dec. 9, 1912, at Mary’s Home, a son of Charles
and Adeline Berendzen Morgan. On Sept. 30, 1933, he was married at
Mary’s Home to Virginia Partain, who survives of the home.
Mr. Morgan was a life-long resident of the Maries Home community and was
a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church.
Other survivors include: two sons, James L. Morgan, Jefferson City, and
Mike Morgan, Dixon; three daughters, Miss Carol Morgan, Jefferson City,
Mrs. Kathleen Normeny, Powder Springs, Ga., and Mrs. Marilyn Jenkins,
Eugene; a brother, Fred Morgan, Eldon; nine grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the
Snows Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Vaughn officiating. Burial will
be in the Mary’s Home Cemetery. Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. today at

Mrs. Ruthe Ann Wahls, 65, Eldon, died today at her residence. She was
born July 13, 1917, at Franklin County, a daughter of Ernest and Lula
Gallanam Sindlinger. On July 3, 1957, she was married at Tunica, Miss.,
to Donald Wahls, who survives of the home.
She had lived in Eldon since 1972. Other survivors include: one brother, Wilford
Sindlinger, Sullivan.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Eaton Funeral Home in
Sullivan. Burial will be in the Blue Springs Cemetery at Sullivan. Visitation will

Mrs. Minnie Josephine Beanland, 89, Eldon, died Wednesday at the Good
Shepherd Nursing Home, Versailles. She was born Jan. 26, 1894, at
Excelsior, the daughter of John and Ella Comer Bookout. She was married
Feb. 17, 1911, at Nowata, Ok., to E. T. “Ted” Beanland, who died Aug.
19, 1978. She was a member of the First Christian Church and had lived
in Eldon since 1926.
Survivors include: three sons, John Beanland, Anna, Ill., Edsel
Beanland, Rocky Mount, and Howard Beanland, Collinsville, Ill.; two
daughters, Mrs. Jewell Daugherty, Edwardsville, Ill., and Mrs. Fern
Koleson, Collinsville, Ill.; one brother, Murel Bookout, Fairfax, Okla.;
25 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Phillips Funeral

Jerald Eugene “Jerry” Rowland, 73, of Eldon, died Sunday at Charles E.
Still Hospital (Jefferson City). He was born Oct. 18, 1909 at
Centralia, a son of John W. and Beulah Kalmbach Rowland. He was married
May 24, 1936 at St. Joseph to Amelia Hatfield, who survives of the home.
A retired farmer, he was on the Board of Directors of REA for 24 years,
and was a former Board of Director for MFA. He was a member of the
Rural Fire Association.
Other survivors include: two sons, Jerry D. Rowland, Anaheim, Calif.
and Billy Joe Rowland, Tipton; one brother, Harold Cook Rowland,
Boonville; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Phillips
Funeral Home in Eldon, the Rev. Jim Randall officiating. Burial will be
in the Greenmore Memorial Gardens in Barnett. Visitation at the

Mrs. Mayme E. Humphrey, 82, of Pineville, died Friday at St. John’s
Hospital in Joplin. She was born Sept. 24, 1900, a daughter of Herman
and Emma Burton Lueckenhoff. She was married Nov. 24, 1926 to Rockford
M. Humphrey, who died June 25, 1967.
A retired funeral director, she owned and operated the Humphrey Funeral
Homes in Pineville and Noel. She was a graduate of the St. Louis
College of Mortuary Science. She was a 50-year member of the Order of
the Eastern Star in Vienna, and a member of the Pineville Christian
Church.
Survivors include: one son R. M. “Rocky” Humphrey, Bella Vista, Ark.;
one sister, Ollie Lueckenhoff, Pineville; and three grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Union
Cemetery near Iberia, the Rev. William Lange officiating. Visitation at
the Stevinson-Mossman Funeral Home in Iberia will be after 5 p.m.
Monday. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Pineville Christian
Church.

Glen C. Phillips, 75, Iberia, died Tuesday at Boone Hospital Center,
Columbia. He was born Jan. 25, 1908, at Iberia, the son of Mitch and
Belle Wallis Philips. HE was married Sept. 24, 1966, at Las Vegas,
Nev., to Lovie Wallis Nabors, who survives of the home.
Mr. Phillips lived in California for many years where he was in the
trucking business. He moved back to Iberia in 1967 and farmed until
retiring in 1973.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Judy Martin, Tuscumbia,
and Ms. Glenna Phillips, Iberia; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Joyce Crane,
Grants Pass, Ore.; a stepson, Avon Nabors, Round Rock, Texas; three
grandchildren, one great-grandson and three step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Stevinson-Mossman
Funeral Home, Iberia, with the Rev. Bill McGarity officiating. Burial
will be in the Alder Springs Cemetery, near Iberia. Visitation will be
from 6-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to time of the service Thursday, at
the funeral home.

Mrs. Chloe Cochran, 69, of Iberia, died Tuesday at Lake of the Ozarks
General Hospial in Osage Beach. She was born Oct. 7, 1913, at Iberia, a
daughter of George M. and Daisy Williams Pemberton. In 1935, she was
married to Jabe Cochran who died Dec. 27, 1962.
Mrs. Cochran was retired in 1969 from the Arrowhead Lodge at the Lake of
the Ozarks. She was a member of the Mt. Union Church of Christ, near
Brumley, but had attended the Iberia First Assembly of God for several
years. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Iberia.
Survivors include: three sons, Wayne Cochran and Billy Cochran, both
of Iberia, and Dennis Cochran, Fairbanks, Alaska; two daughters, Mrs.
Sue Esmond, Kansas City and Mrs. Donna Whittle, Brumley; three
brothers, Clark Pemberton, Richland, Champ Pemberton, Brumley, and
Furnell McCrory, Iberia; two sisters, Mrs. Belle Driskell and Mrs.
Lucille Salsman, both of Richland; 21 grandchildren and 19
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Iberia First
Assembly of God with the Rev. Randall Hoffmann officiating. Burial will
be in the Mt. Union Cemetery near Brumley. Visitation is after 2 p.m.

Clayton Lee Dunkeson, 2 months, of Eldon, died Saturday at his home.
The Dunkeson infant was born March 4, 1983, at Columbia, son of Carl and
Patricia Boicourt Dunkeson. His parents survive in Eldon.
Other survivors include: paternal grandparents, Eldon and Gwendolyn
Dunkeson, Lockhart, Texas; maternal grandparents, Arvel and Mary
Boicourt, Barnett; and paternal great-grandfather, Arthur Townsend,
Lockhart, Texas.

Memorial Gardens, Barnett, with the Rev. Buena Huffman officiating.

Mrs. Elizabeth H. Jackson, 72, of 1310 Linden Dr. (Jefferson City) died
Monday afternoon at St. Mary’s Health Center following a sudden illness.
She was born Sept. 9, 1910, at St. Elizabeth, the daughter of Jake and
Anna Wilbers Mickelis. She was married Feb. 19, 1938, at Columbia to
Howard P. Jackson, who died April 1, 1982.
A lifelong member of the Central Missouri area, she was a member of the
Immanuel Baptist Church.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Hiatte, Holts
Summit, and Mrs. Charles Long, Hartsburg; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Ann
Belcher, St. Louis, and Mrs. Myrtle Stieferman, Tamuning, Guam; two

Anthony J. Jacques, 88, of 10 Jackson St., died Saturday at St. Mary’s
Health Center (Jefferson City). He was born Nov. 20, 1894, at Mary’s
Home, the son of Joseph and Mary Angenendt Jacques. In April 1925, he
was married in Kansas City to Clara Schrader who died on Oct. 7. 1979.
Mr. Jacques worked as an accountant.
He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Amelia Crouse, Mrs. Anna Gerber,
and Mrs. Emma Schrader, all of Ventura, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter’s Catholic
Church with the Rev. Eric Schlachter officiating. Burial will be in
Resurrection Cemetery (Jefferson City).

Henry Monroe “Roe” Duncan, 57, of Stoutland died Sunday at his home. He
was a former resident of the Brumley area. Mr. Duncan was born Aug 29,
1925, at Brumley, son of John and Florence Rodden Duncan. On Oct. 18,
1960, he was married at Crocker to Cleva Rowden, who survives at the
home
He had been employed at Ozark Hatcheries at Stoutland for 28 years. He
was a member of the Richland Church of Christ.

Aubrey J. Johnston, 72, of Olean, died Monday at his home. He was born
Jan. 19, 1911, in Moniteau County, a son of Andrew Simpson and Mary
Elizabeth Shoemaker Johnston. On May 25, 1935, he was married to Lucy
Ada Sahrin, who survives of the home. Mr. Johnston was a farmer and a
member of the Olean Board of Trustees.

Virgil G. Howser, 66, Barnett, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital
(Jefferson City). He was born Jan. 26, 1917, at Eldon, the son of
Richard and Dessie Mae Houston Howser. He was married July 5, 1939, at
Tuscumbia, to Lavern Close who survives at the home. Mr. Howser was a
retired carpenter and lived in the Barnett area most of his life.

Walter O. Davis, 78, of Eldon, died Sunday at Charles E. Still Hospital
(Jefferson City). He was born March 6, 1905 at Brumley, a son of Elmer
Z. and Rebecca Welshaunse Davis. On Nov. 5, 1928, at Linn Creek, he was
married to Dorothy Hodges, who survives of the home.
Mr. Davis was a farmer who operated the Farmer’s Mutual Switchboard in
Olean for 16 years. He also worked at the Eldon Hog Market before his
retirement.

Hospital (Jefferson City). She was born March 4, 1916, in Camden
County, a daughter of Elmer E. and Martha Jane Burns DeLozier. In
November 1931, she was married to Leo Jungmeyer, who survives of the
home. A homemaker, Mrs. Jungmeyer was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Eldon and the XYZ Club.

Nile F. Stone, 59, Ozark, formerly of Eldon, died Saturday at Reed
Springs from an apparent heart attack while hunting. Mr. Stone was born
Dec. 15, 1923, at Iberia, a son of Willis and Mae Lawrence Stone. He
was married Feb. 18, 1944, at Hoghson, Calif., to Theresa Denman, who
survives at the home.
He raised hunting dogs and he was a life-long resident of Miller County.
He was a member of the Old Path Baptist Church near Eldon.

Gale L. Stone, Noel, and Junior Stone, Columbia; four daughters, Mrs.

Roy Allison, 73, 1922 Green Meadow Dr., died Saturday at Chastain’s Home
(Jefferson City) following a lengthy illness. HE was born Feb. 19,
1910, at Eldon, a son of James Robert and Emma Clio Vaughn Allison. He
was married Sept. 15, 1935 at Warrenton to K. Aileen Tribble, who
survives of the home.
A member of the Jefferson City area most of his life, he served in the
7th Army from 1942-45. He saw action in the European Theater and was
injured in a jeep accident in Germany. He worked for the Division of
Family Services for 40 years before retiring in 1975.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Roy Sone Post, Veterans of
Foreigh Wars Roscoe Enloe Post, American Legion, Disabled Veterans, and
Jefferson Lodge #43 AF AM.

A lifelong resident of the Eldon area, Mr. Shackleford was a member of

Clairmore, Okla., she was married to William Clay Tracy who died Jan.
21, 1975.
Mrs. Tracy was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a

Billy Frank Cochran, 51, Iberia, died Friday at Kaiser. Hew was born
April 19, 1932, at Hawkeye, a son of Jabe and Cleo McDowell Cochran. He
was married May 16, 1951, at St. Louis, to Joyce Nappier, who survives.
Mr. Cochran was a former employee of the Miller County Ambulance
District, and served as the Miller County coroner in 1977-78. At the
time of death he had been working at the Lake of the Ozarks General
Hospital in Osage Beach as a nurse’s aid.
A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of the First Baptist Church,
Iberia, and the American Legion Post 229, Eldon.
Other survivors include: four sons, David Cochran and Darryl Cochran,
Kansas City, Danny Cochran, Kaiser, and Donnie Cochran, Osage Beach; two

Velma H. Jasinsky, 83, Osage Beach, died Friday at Osage Manor Nursing
Home, Eldon. She was born June 15, 1900, at Humboldt, Iowa, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amsey J. Hayden. She was married Dec. 2, 1922,
to Zard Jasinsky, who died March 18, 1977.
Mrs. Jasinsky was a member of the Harper Chapel Methodist Church, Osage
Beach. After moving to the Lake area in 1945, she and her husband owned
and operated the Star Motel, Osage Beach, until they retired in 1964.
Survivors include: one son, Dick Jasinsky, Osage Beach; one brother,
Ray Hayden, La Canda, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Inez Himrod, Des Moines,
Iowa; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Birdie Louise Thompson, 95, of Jefferson City, died Tuesday at the
St. Joseph Home for the Aged. She was born Sept. 1, 1887 in Iberia, the
daughter of John R. and Sarah Watkins Bond. She was married April 28,
1939, in Hot Springs, Ark. To William F. Thompson, who died May 10,
1958.
She was in the Army Nurse Corps during WWI. A graduate of the
Washington University School of Nursing, she worked for a time in Auruba
for Standard Oil. She worked at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis until her
retirement.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iberia. Survivors include several
nieces and nephews.

Ralph E. Lupardus, 79, Memphis, Tenn., died Thursday in Memphis. HE was
a former resident of Jefferson City. He was born Jan. 29, 1904, in
Miller County, a son of Jim and Edina Lupardus. On Dec. 24, 1923, he
married Marie Long, who preceded him in death. In 1953, he married Mona
Jones, who survives at the home.
Mr. Lupardus was a long-time employee of Oberman Manufacturing Company.
He joined the company while it was operating in Jefferson City and then
moved to Memphis with the firm. He was a charter member of Memorial
Baptist Church, and was involved in Jefferson City Park Board softball
for many years.
He is survived by: three daughters, Mrs. Jo Kieselbach, Holts Sjmmit,
Mrs. Bette Wojtkiewicz, Lockwood, and Mrs. Peggy McKay, Portsmouth, Va.;
a brother, Vernon Lupardus, state of Oklahoma; a sister, Mrs. Helen
Rackers, Fort Myers, Fla.; seven grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.

Memphis, Tenn.

Mrs. Anna Groose, 89, Mary’s Home, died Saturday at St. Mary’s Health
Center. She was born Sept 3, 1893, in Miller County, a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Evers. On April 21, 1914, at Mary’s Home, she was
married to Henry J. Groose who died July 5, 1962.
Mrs. Groose was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church and
the Ladies Sodality. She lived in the Mary’s Home community all her
life.
Survivors include: two sons, Leonard Groose and Walter Groose, both of
Eugene; two daughters, Mrs. Flora Bruning, Jefferson City, and Mrs.
Alberta Schmitz, St. Louis; one sister, Mrs. Theresa Kempker, Eugene; 14
grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Snows
Catholic Church in Mary’s Home with the Rev. John Vaughn officiating.
Burial will be in Mary’s Home Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9
p.m. at Philips Funeral Home in Eldon. A rosary will be recited at 7:30
pm.

Albert Edward “Bert” Hill, 84, Eldon, died Friday at Charles E. Still
Hospital (Jefferson City). He was born Jan. 19, 1898, at Eldon, a son
of Jesse Lafayett and Emma Lee Thompson Hill. On Feb. 22, 1923, he was
married at Tuscumbia to Ila Mildred Tucker, who survives of the home.
A member of Saline Valley Church of Christ, he was a life-long resident
of Miller County and a farmer.
Other survivors include: four sons, Harold A. Hill, Robert A. Hill and
Charles J. Hill, all of Eldon, and Davin E. Hill, Ft. Worth, Texas;
three daughters, Mrs. Alice Sutherland, High Ridge, Mrs. Dorothy
Crabtree, Eldon, and Mrs. Barbara Austin, Dallas, Texas; a brother, John
Hill, Tuscumbia; 33 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, at Phillips funeral Home, Eldon,
with Brother Murl Nash officiating. Burial will be in Tuscumbia
Cemetery. Visitation will be noon-9 p.m. today.

Nile K. Wright, 78, Eldon, died Thursday at Memorial Community Hospital
(Jefferson City). He was born April 23, 1905, at Eugene, the son of
Joseph L. and Lena Simpson Wright. He was married April 23, 1927, to
Blanche McDonald, who survives.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Eldon. Before his
retirement in 1967, he was a maintenance supervisor for Western Union in
Chicago for 43 years. He moved from Chicago to Eldon in 1967.
Survivors include: one son, Dr. Keith L. Wright, Hibbing, Minn.; and
one sister, Maude Wright, Eldon; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Phillips Funeral Home in
Eldon, with the Rev. O.D. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the
Eugene Cemetery.

Oleph “Ode” Duncan, age 77, of Brumley, died Sunday, July 4, 2004, at
Lake Regional Hospital in Osage Beach.
Survivors include: wife, Joyce C. Landreth, and one son, William Scott
Duncan, both of the home; four daughters, Linda Sue Kyle of Pleasant
Hill, Kelly Jean Louk of Belton, Beverly Jo Duncan of Brumley, and
Sherry Teresa Brisbin of Pleasant Hill; two brothers, Donald Duncan of
Brumley and Tennyson Duncan of Eldon; one sister, Juanita Wall of
Crocker; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 9, at Rekus Funeral
Home in Iberia. Interment with military honors will be in Greenberry
Cemetery located on the family farm near Brumley. Visitation will be
from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Ann Rusk Ulrey, 85, of Eldon died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at Eldon
Healthcare Center. She was born July 24, 1914, in Miller County to
Louis A. and Della Albertson Rusk. On June 24, 1947, she was married in
Eldon to Jack Ulrey, who survives at the home.
Mrs. Ulrey was a 1932 graduate of Eldon High School and also was a
graduate of Central Missouri State University. She began teaching at
Rocky Mount and then joined the Eldon Public School faculty, first as a
second grade teacher and then became an art teacher. She retired with
more than 30 years tenure. Mrs. Ulrey was a member of the Eldon United
Methodist Church asd was a former member of the Missouri State Teachers
Association and Retired Teachers Association. Also surviving her is a
daughter, Nancy Ulrey of Bartlesville, Okla.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon with the Rev. Fred Smith officiating. Burial was in the Eldon
Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Eldon United Methodist Church of
the American Heart Association.

Bonnie Fay Small Kallenbach, 87, of Bolivar, formerly of Tuscumbia, died
recently. She was born May 30, 1912, in Tuscumbia to Thomas Hendricks
and Minta Lenora Goodrick Small. In 1936, she was married in Jefferson
City to Robert Wynes Kallenbach, who died in 1975.
After being graduated from Tuscumbia High School in 1931, she enrolled
at Central Missouri State College, now University in Warrensburg,
earning a lifetime teaching certificate. She then taught for three
years in one-room school houses: Manning, Vernon and Bond, all in Miller
County.
After her marriage, she lived in Carthage for a year then moved to
Brazito. Her husband was an extension agent for Cole County from 1937
until 1941. In 1941, they moved to Bolivar and Mrs. Kallenbach was a
room mother and 4-H leader in sewing and cooking. After all her
children were in school, she was a bookkeeper for Ruby Ables, a sales
clerk for Delarue Department Store and a substitute teacher. After her
youngest child entered college, she returned to teaching at Pleasant
Hope Elementary School and finished her bachelor’s degree at age 50 by
taking summer school and extension courses. She was graduated cum laude
from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield in 1963.
In 1963, Mrs. Kallenbach moved to Owensville with her husband and taught
fifth grade there. In 1969, they retired to the farm in Tuscumbia where
her husband had been reared. In 1976, Mrs. Kallenbach received an award
from the Department of Agriculture when the home place was honored as a
Centennial Farm for being owned by the same family for more than 100
years.
In 1977, Mrs. Kallenbach sold the farm to her daughter and son-in-law,
Deanne and Charles Murphy. She returned to Bolivar, where she was
active in the Bolivar Garden Club and Better Homes Extension Club,
serving as an officer for both. She was a charter member of the Bolivar
Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible
school.
Surviving her are three children, Deanne Kallenbach Murphy of Tuscumbia,
Bill Bob Kallenbach of Bolivar and Rose Kallenbach of Lenexa, Kan.; five
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Glenna
Harryman of Louisville, Ky. A brother, Kelly Small, died shortly after
she did.

Anthony S. Jurgensmeyer, 60, of Jefferson City died Thursday, Aug. 12,
1999, at his home. He was born Aug 11, 1939, in St. Elizabeth to
William and Irmine Schwaller Jurgensmeyer. His mother survives in
Jefferson City. On April 27, 1963, he was married in Mary’s Home to Ann
Mary Kempker, who died June 6, 1998. On July 3, 1999, he was married in
Jefferson City to Karen Hart Kempker, who survives at the home.
Mr. Jurgensmeyer was a 1957 graduate of St. Elizabeth High School. He
was a retired union carpenter. Mr. Jurgensmeyer also was a member of
the St. Joseph Cathedral, the Knights of Columbus and Carpenters Local
345.
Also surviving are a son, Steve Jurgensmeyer of Jefferson City; two
daughters, Sheila Tannehill of Waverly, Ohio, and Stephanie Blankenship
of Jefferson City; three step-sons, Doug Kempker of Eugene and Keith
Kempker and Darrin Kempker, both of Jefferson City; a step-daughter,
Merideth Lehman of Jefferson City; two grandchildren; two
step-grandchildren; four brothers, Donnie Jurgensmeyer of the state of
Virginia, Ronnie Jurgensmeyer of the state of Florida, Bill Jurgensmeyer
of Jefferson City and Pat Jurgensmeyer of the state of Illinois; and two
sisters, Janice Holtmeyer of St. Charles and Susan Jurgensmeyer of
Springfield.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Cathedral
with the Rev. Daniel Merz and the Rev. Christopher L. Cordes
officiating. Burial was in Hawthorn Cemetery under the direction of
Dulle Trimble Funeral Home of Jefferson City. Memorials are suggested
to the Hospice of Jefferson City and Mid-Missouri or the Missouri River
Hospice.

Henry L. Ryan, 84, of Prairie Village, Kan., died Monday, Oct. 18, 1999,
at Manor Care in Prairie Village. He was born Jan. 3, 1915, in Eldon to
Henry Roy and Virginia Maude Kelsay Ryan. He is survived by his wife of
65 years, Mary Louise Ryan who survives at Manor Care.
Mr. Ryan was reared in Eldon and was a graduate of Eldon High School and
Kansas City University. He was traffic manager for the Ash Grove Cement
Company for 40 years before retiring in 1979. He was licensed as a
practitioner before the Interstate Commerce Commission and participated
in rail, motor and water carriage of cement issues before state and
federal regulatory agencies. He also was active in the development of
transportation policy.
He was a charter member of the Homestead Country Club and was a longtime
member of the Old Mission Methodist Church and its First Raters Class.
He was one of the three original J. C. Nichols homebuyers in the
then-new housing development of Prairie Village.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Ryan is survived by a daughter, Joan Ryan
Ball of Mission Woods, Kan.; two sons, David L. Ryan of Topeka, Kan.,
and D. Michael Ryan of Eugene, Oregon; eight grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Moriah and
Freeman Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Old Mission
Methodist Church, 5519 State Park Road, Shawnee Mission, Kan. 66205.

Anna Burris Armstrong, 85, of Naples, Fla., died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999,
at Naples Community Hospital. She was born May 17, 1914, in Eldon to
Carl “Curly” Ray and Elsie Cathcart Loving Burris. Mrs. Armstrong, a
former resident of Kansas City, was retired from Phoenix Box and Label
Company of Kansas City.
Surviving are three children, Joann Macomber of Montana, William Joseph
Armstrong of Kansas City and Linda Armstrong of Naples, Fla.; a brother,
Bert Burris of Eldon; two sisters, Ethel Franklin of Ogden, Utah, and
Betty G. Thorn of Ironton; a sister-in-law, Mary Burris of Eldon; four
grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated under the direction of Park Lawn Funeral Home in
Naples Fla. Graveside services will be held at a later date at Eldon
Cemetery.

Glen Hadley Stone, 61, of Yuma, Ariz., died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at
his home. He was born April 27, 1938, in Ulman to Logan Hadley and Eula
Sarah Shepherd Stone. His parents, who preceded him in death, also had
been residents of Eldon. In 1967, Mr. Stone married Karen Wilson, who
survives at the home.
Mr. Stone was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was
employed with Yellow Freight as a truck driver for 22 years, retiring in
1995. He was a member of the Ulman Christian church.
Also surviving him are three daughters, Starla Buechter of Iberia, Shona
Watson of Lincoln, Neb., and Tosha Edwards of Dunning, Neb.; a son,
David Jones of Jefferson City; two stepsons, Mark Williams of Kansas and
Mike Williams of Lincoln, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; and two sisters,
Mildred Eads of Jefferson City and Margaret Morris of Columbia.
His body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Carmen Hildred James Robinett Rayburn, 86, of Eldon died Friday, Oct. 1,
1999, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. She was born
Feb. 9, 1913, in California, Mo., to Elmer and Evalena Caldwell James.
In 1934, she was married to Osby Robinett, who died in 1977. In 1986,
she was married at Aurora Springs to Charles Rayburn, who died in 1991.
Mrs. Rayburn was a member of the Ninth Street Christian Church in Eldon.
Surviving her are a daughter, Lorraine Robinett Richardson of Eldon;
five grandchildren; a sister, Wilma Bowlin of Woodland, Calif.; and a
brother, Gene James of Olean. She was preceded in death by children
Alice Mattie Robinett and Melvin Jerome Robinett.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Aurora Springs Baptist
Church with Pastor Ernie Buscher officiating. Burial was in Hickory
Hill Cemetery at Hickory Hill.

Basil James Bunch, 75, of Surprise, Ariz., formerly of Eldon, died
Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at Veteran’s Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz.
He was born Oct. 19, 1913, in Miller County to James Vineyard and Julena
Myrtle Bowlin Bunch.
Mr. Bunch was baptized Dec. 1, 1940, by the Rev. Willard Brewer and was
a member of the Blue Springs Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Eldon
High School and served in the U.S. Army at Great Lakes, Ill. He
received his associate’s degree at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar
and a Bachelor’s Degree from Colorado State University in Greeley,
Colo., and a Master’s Degree from Lincoln University in Jefferson City.
During his early career, Mr. Bunch worked at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita,
Kan. He taught school for many years, with his last teaching at Wood
Junior High School at Fort Leonard Wood.
He is survived by his goddaughter, Catherine Lee of Campbell, Calif.,
and her daughter Alexa and son Justen; a sister, Dorine Dietzel of
Bevard, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Opal Bunch of Rocky Mount and Lillie
Bunch of Eldon. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis Bunch
and John Bunch, and four sisters, Pearl Brewer, Bertha Bunch, Ethel Cox
and Tonsie Mae Bunch.
Following cremation, graveside services were held Saturday at Blue
Springs Cemetery in Eldon, conducted by the Rev. James L. Bunch.
Memorials may be made to the Blue Springs Cemetery.

Lularose Wilson of Pinckneyville, Ill., died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at
her home. She was born in Eldon to Bernis J. and Coralie Vernon
Sanders. Her grandparents were John and Rosa Vernon and Hugh and
Lucretia Sanders. On Jan 2, 1941, she was married to Colonel J. A.
Wilson of the United States Air Force. He died Sept. 27, 1945.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Pinckneyville First Baptist Church where
she served as church organist for many years. She received a Bachelor
of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, a Masters of
Education from the University of Illinois and did post-graduate work at
the Royal Holloway College in England. She was a member of the Delta
Kappa Gamma Women Teachers Sorority and was a teacher and counselor at
Pinckneyville Community High School from which she retired.
Surviving are a son, Jack Allen Wilson of Jackson, Tenn.; a sister,
Carole Etta Black of Du Quoin, Ill. and two grandsons.
Funeral services were held Oct. 24 at Pyatt Funeral Home in
Pinckneyville with the Rev. Maurice Swinford and the Rev. James Bush
officiating. Burial was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St.
Louis on Oct. 25. Memorials may be made to the Mary
Kuykendall-Carpenter Heart Fund.

Margaret Helen Humphreys, 85, of Tuscumbia died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999,
at her home. She was born Oct. 26, 1914, in Montrose to Ora Paul and
Edith May Silvers Whitfield. On April 22, 1933, she was married in Iowa
to Marshall Eugene Humphreys II, who died March 10, 1972.
Mrs. Humphreys was a graduate of Trenton High School. She and Dr.
Humphreys moved to Tuscumbia from Kirksville in 1937. She was a member
of the Tuscumbia Christian Church.
Surviving are a son, Marshall Eugene Humphreys III of Ulman; two
daughters, Marjorie Ann Howard of Tuscumbia and Martha Susan Grossman of
Henderson, Nev.; three sisters, Edith May Long of Kansas City, Betty
Jane Berry of Sunrise Beach and Dorothy Ann Whitfield of Lee’s Summit;
nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rekus Funeral Home in
Iberia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the
Tuscumbia Christian Church with the Rev. Gene Edwards officiating.

Imogene F. Bemboom, 75, Jefferson City, died Feb. 26, 2000, at St. Marys Health
Center. She was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Jefferson City, a daughter of Elmer and
Charlsie Snelling Martin. Her mother survives in Jefferson City. She was married
Jan. 16, 1943, in St. Louis, to Joseph H. Bemboom, who died May 12, 1995.
A member of Immaculate Conception Church, she worked for the Missouri Department of
Revenue for more than 20 years.
Other survivors include: one daughter, Charlotte Hackman, Wilmington, N.C.; one son,
Russ Bemboom, Jefferson City; two sisters, Anne McDowell and Brenda Keyes, both of
Jefferson City; one brother, Kenneth Martin, Warrensburg; and two grandsons.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Greg
Higley will officiate. Entombment will be in Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum.

Jack Wallace, 87, of Eldon died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at St. Mary’s
Health Center in Jefferson City. He was born Aug. 29, 1912, in Camden
County to J. O. and Annie West Wallace. On Dec. 21, 1935, he was
married in Jefferson City to Ruby Son, who died Jan. 18, 1962. On June
1, 1963, he was married in Harrison, Ark., to Eileen Slote, who survives
at the home.
Mr. Wallace was owner of Jack’s Saw Filing Shop in Eldon. He was a
member of the Eldon First Christian Church.
Also surviving him are a daughter, Pat Hill of Eldon; two grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Freida Wallis and Ina Mae
Wyrick, both of Eldon, and Veda Mock of Lenexa, Kan.; and a brother,
Ivan Wallace of St. Louis.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon. The Rev. Eldon Myers and the Rev. Jasper Hunter officiated.

Mrs. Charlsie M. Martin, age 99 years, of Jefferson City, MO, died Wednesday,
January 14, 2004, at the Jefferson City Manor Nursing Center. Mrs. Martin was born
January 30, 1904, in Miller County, MO, the daughter of Charles and Eveline
Shackelford Snelling, both deceased. She was married on February 11, 1920, in Miller
County, MO, to Elmer W. Martin, who preceded her in death on June 14, 1970.
A life-long resident of the Central Missouri area, Mrs. Martin attended Iberia
Academy School, Iberia, MO. A homemaker, she had been employed at the International
Shoe Factory for over twenty years. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Christian
Church in Miller County, MO.
Family and friends were looking forward to her 100th birthday celebration in
fourteen days.
Survivors include one son: Kenneth R. Martin and his wife Mary of Warrensburg, MO;
two daughters: Ann McDowell and her husband Harold of Jefferson City, MO, and Brenda
Keys and her husband Rick of Jefferson City, MO; one sister: Faye Wolf of
Collinsville, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and 7 great-great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son: James C. Martin; two daughters:
Pauline Bemboom and Imogene Bemboom, and 2 great grandchildren: Samuel T. Martin and
Taylor G. McDowell.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2004, in the
Freeman Chapel with Reverend David Avery officiating. Interment will be at Riverview
Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Freeman Mortuary from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

Melton Sloss. She was married to Wilford Hensley, who preceded her in
death. She was married Sept. 17, 1981, in Iberia, to Richard Lewis
Randall, who died Feb. 26, 1987.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Catholic Church. One infant son
preceded her in death.
Graveside services were in Union Cemetery, near Iberia. The Rev.
Clarence Wiederholt officiated. Arrangements were under the direction
of Rekus Funeral Home, Iberia.

Mrs. Zula Jane Jarrett, 64, Richland, died Monday. Surviving are two
daughters, Mrs. Doris Sharp, Kansas City, Kan.; and Mrs. Gretta Bolien,
Mt. Vernon; one brother, Milton Sooter, Iberia; two sisters, Mrs. Lillie
Livingston, Iberia; and Mrs Mae West, Jefferson City; and seven

Nellie Jones, 95, of Olmsted, Ill., died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at
Daystar Nursing Home in Cairo, Ill. She formerly lived in Eldon. She
was born Feb. 26, 1903, in Brumley to Henry David and Mariah Graham
Wall. She was married in 1924 to Troy Jones, who died in 1967.
Mrs. Jones was a member of the Caledonia Baptist Church in Olmsted and
the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving her are a son, Raymond Jones of Ullin, Ill., two
granddaughters, and a sister, Hazel Martin of Eldon. One daughter,
Olive Kathryn Mowery, died in 1979.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday at Gott Cemetery near
Ulman. Crain Funeral Home of Ullin, Ill., directed services.

Aleen Sooter, 76, of Brumley died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at Miller
County Nursing Home in Tuscumbia. She was born March 11, 1923, in
Miller County to Bert and Rhett Luttrell Strutton. On Aug. 17, 1960,
she was married in Kirksville to Ercil Ernest Sooter, who died Nov. 4,
1979.
Surviving her are three sons, Norman DeGraffenreid and Frank
DeGraffenreid, both of Eldon, and Harold DeGraffenreid of Tuscumbia; a
daughter, Charlotte Carson of Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Dennis
Strutton of Eldon; three sisters, Ruth Swortz and Bonnie McKee, both of
the state of California, and Dorliss Strange of the state of Louisiana;
seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rekus Funeral Home in
Iberia. The Rev. Charles Caldwell officiated. Burial was in Mt. Zion
Cemetery near Tuscumbia. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer
Society.

Norbert John Fennewald, 49, of Vienna, died Friday in East St. Louis,
Ill., after being hit by a car. Mr. Fennewald was born Dec. 3, 1913
near St. Thomas the son of Herman and Christine Fennewald. He was
married to Alma Luebbert Volmert on Oct. 7, 1947.
Surviving are his wife, one step-son, James Volmert; two step-daughters,
Mrs. Frank James, Hazelwood, Mo., and Mrs. Dewane Harris of Key West,
Fla.; three brothers, Ben Fennewald of Holts Summit, Clarence Fennewald
of North Dakota, Ed Fennewald of Kansas City; three sisters, Mrs.
Bernard Schell of St. Thomas, Mrs. Ilda Strope of Jefferson City, Mrs.
Josephine Jurgensmeyer of St. Elizabeth; and one step-grandchild.
The Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. today at a Vienna funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today for Doom Snellings, 77, of
Iberia, in the Mt. Zion Christian Church near Tuscumbia. Mr. Snellings
was born July 14, 1886, the son of Frank and Angeline Plemmons
Snellings. He was married April 5, 1922 to Miss Eveline Shackleford who
died April 17, 1951. He then married Miss Olive DeGraffenreid who
survives.
Mr. Snellings was a veteran of WW I and was a member of the Iberia
American Legion Post 105.
Survivors besides his wife include two grandsons and several nephews and
nieces. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Mr. Barnett was born May 8, 1879 in Maries County the son of William and
Nancy Barnett. He married Nettie Thomas in 1904 who survives.

Glen Barnett of Willow Springs; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Williams of St.
Louis and Mrs. Myrtle Wilson of Iberia; one sister, Mrs. Julia Sexton of

Maude Allee, 88, Jefferson City, died Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Home in
Jefferson City. She was born Oct. 28, 1906, the daughter of Everett and
Alice James Crane. She was married Feb. 22, 1933, in Tuscumbia to
Elmont “Jack” Allee, who died Dec. 28, 1987.
She was a homemaker and a longtime resident of Eldon. She moved to
Jefferson City in 1987. She was a member of First Christian Church in
Eldon.
Survivors include: one daughter, Kathryn Bauer Waite, Eldon; one
sister, Corrine Young, Springfield; three brothers, Calvin J. Spivey and
S. Rex Spivey, both of Rogers, Ark., and Joseph E. Spivey, Little Rock,
Ark.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home. The

Antoinette “Nettie” Schulte Smith, 86, of Ozark, died Monday, Feb. 15,
1999, at her home. She was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Mary’s Home to Henry
and Sophia Holzer Schulte. On Nov. 5, 1934, she was married to William
A. Smith, who survives at the home.
The Smith’s lived in St. Louis for 42 years. In 1978, they moved to
Ozark where they became active in church and community affairs.
Surviving Mrs. Smith is her husband Bill Smith of 64 years; two sons,
Richard Smith and James Smith of St. Louis; three daughters, Marilyn
Fletcher of Ozark and Carol Slater and Kathy Petersen of St. Louis; a
daughter-in-law, Ika Smith of Alexandria, Va.; three sisters, Jennie
Burrus of Moberly, Alvina Kimberlin of St. Louis and Lucy Williams of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Helen Schulte of Eldon; 15
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A son, William Smith of
Springfield, Va., preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at St. Joseph
the Worker Catholic Church in Ozark, with Father Paul McLoughlin
officiating. Burial was in Weaver Cemetery, St. Joseph Section, Ozark.

Eva G. Miller Morrow, 77, of Versailles, formerly of Eldon, died Sunday,
Nov. 22, 1998, at the Kidwell Home in Versailles. She was born June 23,
1921, in Owosso, Okla., to Earl F. and Rosa Sims Gambill. She was
married to Charley Miller, who died July 2, 1987. Mrs. Miller was a
member of the Olean Christian Church.
Surviving her are a son, Tom Miller of Sturgeon; a daughter, Ann
Campbell of Colorado; a half-sister, Louise Stangel of Kansas City;
eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services were held Monday at Spring Garden Cemetery

1936, in Jefferson City, to Delmar Wayne Amos, who died July 29, 1993.
She worked in the fitting room at Florsheim Shoe Co. She was a member
of Friendship Baptist Church, Mexico, and the Women’s Missionary Union
of the church.
Survivors include: one son, Virgil L. Amos, Mexico; one stepbrother,
Tom Procter, Eldon; one stepsister, Margaret Stram, Rockford, Ill.; and

Albert John Harris, 66, of Eldon died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998, at Ellis
Fischel Cancer Center in Columbia. He was born April 19, 1932, in St.
Louis to Albert A. and Mazie Zettler Harris. His mother survives in
Tuscumbia. On March 16, 1954, he was married in Joliet, Ill., to
Marjorie Moore, who survives at the home. Mr. Harris served in the U.
S. Air Force and was a self-employed home improvement contractor.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Albert
Harris and William Harris, both of Marshall; four daughters, Marion
Harrelson of Seeland, Mich., Margie Ford of Greenwood, Fla., Cathy
Edwards of Columbus, Ga., and Ginny Robertson of Columbia; three
brothers, Arthur Harris of Iberia, Donald Harris of Tuscumbia and Ozzie
Harris of Barry, Ill.; three sisters, Mazie Vogel of Canton, Lorraine
Johnson of the state of New Mexico and Aileen Autrey of Bowling Green;
and 10 grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of
Columbia. A private family service will be held at a later date.

Carl W. Vernon, 84, Eldon, died Tuesday at Charles E. Still Hospital
(Jefferson City). He was born Nov. 22, 1895, at Eldon, the son of Isaac
T. and Martha J. White Vernon. He was married Sept. 20, 1920, at
Jefferson City, to Edith Barnard, who survives at the home.
Mr. Vernon was superintendent of the Eldon Street and Water Department
for 37 years, retiring in 1973. Since then, he had served on the Eldon
City Cemetery Board.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Vernon was a member of the American Legion, the
Veterans of foreign Wars and the Veterans of World War I. He also was a
member of the First Baptist Church, Eldon.
Other survivors include: a son, Carl D. Vernon, Eldon; a daughter, Mrs.
Madelene Barker, Eldon; two brothers, Edgar Vernon, Eldon and Truman

Crocker, to Edna Marie Cochran, who survives at the home.
He worked for Burton/Duenke Construction at the Lake for 20 years and

Mount Union Cemetery near Brumley for 12 years.

He was a farmer, a cabinetmaker and a laborer for J. B. Deeres. He also
taught at Drury College in Springfield and worked for the Civilian
Conservation Corps. He was an avid outdoorsman.

Dannie Shelton, 78, Crocker, died Oct. 26, 1999, at General Leonard Wood
Army Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 9, 1920, near Crocker, a son
of John and Mary Long Shelton. He was married Sept. 12, 1947, in
Tuscumbia, to Lucille Stone, who survives at the home.
He was a 1942 graduate of Crocker High School and an Army veteran of
World War II, receiving the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He worked
at Fort Leonard Wood from 1961 until his retirement in 1986. He was a
member of Iberia VFW Post 6167 and Waynesville DAV Chapter 49.

Lester Shelton, Richland; one sister, Lois Dickey, Lamar; two

Robinson, Ill., to Charlotte Johnson, who survives at the home. He
served in the Army and Marines and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Una Mae Smith, 85, of Eldon, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Eldon Health
Care Center. She was born Feb. 21, 1914, in Calhoun to Calhoun and
Hattie Smith Wills. On Sept. 28, 1935, she was married to William
Jasper Smith, who died Sept. 23, 1971.
Mrs. Smith taught Sunday school for several years at the Eldon First
Baptist Church, where she was a member. She was employed at Montgomery
Ward in Jefferson City for 17 years, retiring in 1970. She also
assisted with the family business, Smith Paper in Eldon, for 15 years.
She was a member of the Eugene Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving her are a son, Virgil K. Smith of Henley; three grandchildren;
and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Eldon First

Retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander James E. Fendorf died Tuesday,
Feb. 2, 1999, of cancer at Dwight David Eisenhower Veterans
Administration Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kan. He was a former
resident of Eldon. He was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Jefferson City to
Frank and Icie Mayfield Fendorf.
He attended a one-room schoolhouse in the Ozarks and later graduated
from Stanford University and attended U.S. Navy post graduate school in
Monterey, Calif. He was a Navy pilot with 10,000 hours flight time,
primarily with the Pacific Fleet. He was among the first pilots to fly
into Korea when the war started in 1950, and participated in most of the
major actions, including the Pusan Perimeter, the Inchon Invasion and
the race to the Yalu River border between North Korea and Manchuria.
Among his last flights were the evacuation of Marines and soldiers from
the Chosin Reservoir through the post of Hungnam.
Lt. Commander Fendorf flew a total of 49 missions over Korea. He was
awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with four stars
and the Presidential Unit Citation. In Connection with his Navy duties,
he flew throughout the world, including support for the Dominican
Republic Action in 1965. He also participated in several support
flights in and out of Vietnam during 1965, 1966 and 1967 during which he
flew C130 assault aircraft. He also participated in two tours in
Antarctica in 1964 and 1965, flying ski-equipped C130 aircraft. For
this, he was recognized by having a glacier (Fendorf Glacier) in Queen
Maud Land named after him.
After he retired from the Navy, Lt. Commander Fendorf worked as an
investigator and assistant district director for the National
Association of Securites Dealers. He retired in 1987 after 18 years.
Surviving him are his wife of 39 years, Gloria Yvonne; three daughters,
Lisa Hoefgren of Bedford, Texas, Geri Urban of Leavenworth and Cherre
Miller of Weston; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two brothers,
Frank Fendorf of Overland Park, Kan., and Dr. Kenneth M. Fendorf of
Aptos Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Carolyn M. Fendorf of Lenexa, Kan.,
and Marilyn Gunderman of Overland Park, Kan.
Cremation at Davis Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth was followed by a
private burial ceremony at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. The
family suggests any memorial contributions be made to the St. Paul
Episcopal Church Choir in Leavenworth or the church of their choice.

Frances E. Basinger, 90, California, died Oct. 10, 1999, at her home.
She was born Aug. 31, 1909, in Olean, a daughter of Walter and Marvy
Wiser Campbell. She was married Aug. 28, 1932, in California, to Jewell
Basinger, who survives at the home.
A homemaker, she attended Prairie Hill School. She was a member of first Assembly
of God Church, California, and was active in the Gideons Auxiliary.
Other survivors include: one son, Jewell Francis Basinger, Leesburg; two daughters,
Christeen Karleskint, Kirkwood, and June Harman, California; seven grandchildren and
nine great-grandchildren. Two granddaughters preceded her in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home, California.
The Rev. Steve Walker and the Rev. Ivan Dameron will officiate. Burial will be in
Highland Cemetery, Latham. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials
are suggested to First Assembly of God Church, 204 N. Oak St., California, Mo.

Luther Wayne Pendleton, 68, Eldon, died Wednesday at St. Mary's
Health Center. He was born April 30, 1927, in Iberia, the son of Luther and
Edith Grosvenor Pendleton. He was married March 26, 1983, in Palmdale,
Calif., to Noma Pitchford, who survives of the home.
A Marine Corps veteran, he worked as a structural assembler with
Lockheed Aircraft in Palmdale and Burbank, Calif., from 1971-1990. Upon
retiring, he moved to Eldon. He was a member of Oak Street Church of
Christ.
Other survivors include: two sons, Barry Pendleton, Tehachapi,
Calif., and Bruce Pendleton, McCall, Idaho; four stepsons, LeRoy Bushong,
San Fernando, Calif., James Bushong, Burleson, Texas, Corbin Bushong, Lee's
Summit, and Mike Bushong, Pekin, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Nina Mack,
Ferndale, Calif.; one brother, Paul Leo Pendleton, Salisbury, Md.; one
sister, Ina Allen, Florissant; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Phillips Funeral Home,
Eldon. Minister Jeff Little will officiate. Burial will be in Smiths
Chapel Cemetery, Gainesville. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday.

Alvirda Mae Harrington, 72, of Olean died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at
Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. She was born March 4,
1926, in Mexico, Mo., to Forrest and Mildred Peters Mayes. On June 29,
1946, she was married in Mexico to I. B. Harrington, who died Dec. 5,
1989.
Surviving Mrs. Harrington are a son, Mark Harrington of the state of
Texas; three daughters, Denise Kinsey of Olean, Chris Johnston of Holts
Summit and Ellen Byrd of Eldon; five grandchildren, Jeremiah Johnston,
Audra Johnston, Charles Kinsey, Josette Kinsey and Kurtis Kinsey; two
sisters, Delores Pearson of Barnett and Ruth Phillips of Paris, Mo.; and
a brother, George Mayes of Winfield. One son, John Harrington, and a
granddaughter preceded her in death.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home
in Eldon. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mt.
Pleasant Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Edwards officiating.

JoAnn Pratt, 65, of Kansas City, formerly of California, died Tuesday,
Jan. 26, 1999, at her home. She was born Feb. 13, 1933, in Olean to
Charles A. “Chalky” and Nila Agee Atkin, former residents of Olean. She
was married to Oda C. Pratt, who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Pratt was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association of the Ladies
Auxiliary. She retired from Commerce Bank in Kansas City after 27 years
of service.
Surviving are a daughter, Celia A. Mallett of Kansas City; two sons,
William C. Pratt of Grain Valley and Joseph C. Pratt of Blue Springs;
three grandchildren; two stepsons, Dennis R. Pratt of Overland Park,
Kan., and Douglas A. Pratt of Missouri City; and three
step-grandchildren.
Burial was held Friday, Jan. 29, in Leavenworth National Cemetery in
Leavenworth, Kan.

Stanley Raymond Wall, 85, of Pacific died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at
Pacific Care Center of heart disease and complications of diabetes. He
was born Oct. 23, 1913, in Iberia to Dow and Eva (Groves) Wall. In
1931, he was married to Evelyn Casey.
Surviving him are three daughters, Shirley Groves of Union and Pat
Wright and Sharon Dane, both of Pacific; two brothers, Hannis Wall of
Denver, Colo., and Warren Wall of Eldon; a sister, Bonnie McDowell of
Madison, Ill.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren. A son, Glen Wall, preceded him in death in
April 1994.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Bell Funeral Home in
Pacific. Burial was at Sunrise Cemetery in Pacific.

Doris Nadine Clemens, 86, of Lee’s Summit died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, at
Lee’s Summit Hospital. She was born in Tuscumbia to Lawrence and Ercel
Wright.
Mrs. Clemens lived in the Eldon and Tuscumbia areas before moving to the
Kansas City area in 1953. While in Miller County, she taught and was a
principal in primary and secondary schools. She also had taught in a
one-room schoolhouse. After moving to Kansas City, she was an
advertising manager for Macy’s Department Store in Kansas City. After
that, she became the production manager for Valentine Radford
Advertising Agency in Kansas City.
Mrs. Clemens attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and Central
Missouri State University in Warrensburg. She was an active supporter
of the National World War II Memorial and was a member of Longview
Christian Church.
Surviving her are a son, Robert A. Clemens of Kearney, Mo.; a daughter,
Annette Vaughan of Independence; a brother and sister, Lloyd A. Wright
and Dorothy Nichols, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren. One daughter, Roberta Janet Clemens, preceded
her in death.
Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Speaks Suburban Chapel
in Independence. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at
Tuscumbia Cemetery.
