Louis M. Edwards, youngest son of former Probate Judge and Mrs. L. S.
Edwards of near Tuscumbia, passed away suddenly at Eldon Saturday
afternoon from a heart attack.
Mr. Edwards had gone to town with his son, Bob, his sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Hicks
and nephew, Bob Hicks. He had separated from them and was talking to a group of men
on the street near the Eldon Bank when he began to feel ill. He walked into an
alley and called Willard Abbett who was nearby to get a doctor. Dr. Shelton was
called and tried to revive him but he died in a few minutes.
Mr. Edwards daughter, Juanita, was also in town with a group of friends when she
heard that a man had dropped dead on the street, went to investigate and found it to
be her father.

Benjamin Evans was born in Pennsylvania January 22, 1807 and died at his
home near York Centre, Ohio September 2, 1889. In the year 1808 his
father with his family moved to Ohio and settled in Licking County on
the Welch Hills. At the age of 15 he embraced the Christian religion
and united with the M. E. Church.
In 1827 he was married to Miss Sarah Webster of Lock, Knox County, Ohio,
who still lived to mourn the loss of the companion of her youth, who for
52 years has shared with her life’s joys and sorrows. To them were born
six children, four still living, viz: Allen, Lewis, Julius and
Patience.
“Uncle Ben” always had a cheery word for all. He had not only a musical
nature, but a musical voice. He was one of the “sweet singers in
Israel”. He sang with the spirit and understanding. He rendered
effective and valuable service to the church choir by his spiritual
songs. As sinks the sun to rest when the day is done, so his life’s sun
went down calmly.
Deceased was the grandfather of Mrs. T. W. Cotton of Rocky Mount.

Ezra DeGraffenreid, 20 years old, of Kaiser, was almost instantly killed
about 12 o’clock last Wednesday, when some dynamite caps and powder
exploded while he was working on the road near New Hope. The only
person near when the accident occurred was G. W. Calkin, who had his
back turned at the time.
DeGraffenreid was thrown about sixty feet from the road over a fence
into a field. Both legs were broken and his skull crushed.
DeGraffenreid and Mr. Calkin had been shooting out some stumps from the
road and three or four sticks of powder and several caps were on the
ground shortly before the explosion. DeGraffenreid was thought to have
been in the act of loading a hole to shoot out a stump when in some
manner the charge was prematurely exploded.

Obituary: Miller County Autogram Sentinel, January 25, 1940
Beautiful and impressive funeral services were held here from the
Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 O'clock, for "Squire" John
Ferguson, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.M. Martin about
nine O'clock Saturday (January 20, 1940) morning, after more than a
week's critical illness. His mind was rational to the end and his
passing came peacefully.
President G. Byron Smith of Iberia Junior College, one of Mr. Ferguson's
truest and most intimate friends, delivered the funeral discourse
eulogizing his life's work among us and paying a beautiful tribute to
his memory. It was Mr. Ferguson's request that Dr. Smith perform this
last sad rites at his death, and Dr. Smith had so been requested by Mr.
Ferguson long before his death. Dr. Smith gladly accepted the petition
and spoke of his long life, of his integrity, and the unusual respect
and affection of the community toward him. Attention was called to the
wonderful century through which he had lived. He had seen and taken
part in the winning of the West and had lived through the period of the
development of this nation into what is perhaps the greatest nation of
the earth. Dr. Smith said that in his lifetime greater changes had come
to the human race than in any like period in the history of the world.
The development of the railroads, the invention of the!
telephone and telegraph, the automobile and the airplane, moving pictures, paved
roads, radios, and improved printing inventions had profoundly changed the habits
and thinking of the civilized world. He had lived through four wars and had taken
part in one. He had been the witness of all these things, and through all this
century had been a humble follower of the lowly Jesus. His death had been like the
falling of a sturdy oak, and it was unthinkable that such a life should not in its
fruition bring forth an immortality which should be everlasting. Some of Mr.
Ferguson's most favorite old time hymns were sung by a male quartet, composed by
Rev. Merle Bandy, C.L. Casey, Loran Adams and Ted Gray, and a beautiful and
impressive prayer was delivered by Dr. Henry Walker, pastor of the Congregational
Church.
The floral offering was beautiful, presented by the following: Mr. and
Mrs. R.M. Fendorf, Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Porter, the Joseph Crismon family,
Adams and Casey families, Royal Neighbors, County officials, Masons,
Iberia Postal employees, American Legion, Eastern Star, Legion
Auxiliary, M.E. Church, and R.L.C.A. Auxilary.
John Ferguson was born in Dumfries, Scotland, December 25, 1838; died in
Iberia at the home of his daughter, Mr. G.M. Martin, (with whom he had
lived approximately fourteen years) January 20, 1940, being 101 years
and 25 days old at the time of his death.
He came to the States at the age of 14 with his mother and two sisters,
his father having died at sea on their way over here and was buried in
the ocean.
He was married to Dorcas C. Shelton June 4, 1862 and to this union
fourteen children were born, five having precede him in death; two boys,
Joseph and James died in infancy; and three other sons, William T.,
George and Ed, having passed away during the past eight years. The
surviving members of the family are Charley Ferguson and Mrs. Lizzie
Williams of Crocker, Missouri; Fred of Hawkeye, Missouri; Jack of
Clinton, Missouri; Mrs. Belle Arnold of St. Louis, Missouri; Mrs. W. T.
Mace of Springfield, Missouri and Harry Frank and Mrs. G.M. Martin all
of Iberia. Besides the immediate members of the family, he leaves to
mourn his passing a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren,
as well as a host of other relatives and close friends.
Mr. Ferguson was one of Miller County's pioneer citizens, having for
many years been active in the civic, public, political and religious
affairs of his home community and county as well. He was active service
in the Union Army in Co. M. 3rd MO Vols. during the Civil War; served as
state commander of the Grand Army of the Republic at one time; and for
many years was commander of Miles Carroll Post, G.A.R. here in Iberia,
of which he was the last surviving member. He was a member of the
Iberia Masonic Lodge for approximately 60 years, also a member of the
local Eastern Star Lodge. For over 45 years he served as justice of the
peace of Richwoods Township, with office in Iberia. He was also a
long-time member of the Iberia Methodist church and remained strong in
the faith until the end. For many years, he was a member of its
official board, serving in this capacity at the time of the erection of
the present church edifice 36 years ago.
