Freedom Cemetery

Transcribed by Shirley Sieting.
Freedom Cemetery is located west of the Little Maries River,
just over the county line in Maries County; but so many Miller
County residents are buried there that it seems helpful to
post the list in Miller County.
The large drive-through gate is fastened to an archway made of native rock
that has an insert of granite at the top with the word "Freedom"
inscribed. The cemetery is fenced and well-kept. There are 2 old cedar
trees in the center and pine trees have been plated in places around the
edge.
Nearby stands the old Freedom Church -- abandoned years ago. It was a fine
rural church with two doors facing the east -- eight tall windows and a
platform in the front which still hold tow again upright pianos and what
looks to be a pulpit. There are six of the hanging lights which used to
be common in schools and churches in rural Maries County. It has a
cathedral type of ceiling -- the wainscotting on the walls being carried
all the way up and across, reminding one of the old Lindell church, on the
East Side.
We counted 26 rough field stones that apparently mark gravesites at
Freedom Cemetery. There is also a funeral home marker that is no longer
readable. May peony bushes have been planted and outside the fence in the
brushy pasture there were daylilies and yucca plants blooming.
