Cam Henderson Family
Cammie Vester Henderson, a lifelong resident of Pike County, (except for a few
months spent in Redlands, California), was born November 11, 1904, southeast of
Bowling Green near Mt. Zion Church. Cammie was the son of Lell Vester and Lillie
Mae Johnson. He had three older brothers and one sister: Clyde, Leonard, Malcolm,
and Edith.
His paternal grandfather, John Henderson, migrated, with his parents and family, by
wagon, from Carolina. John married Melissa Baxter.
His maternal grandparents were James Johnson (1839 - 1921) and Lucinda Ingram
(1846 - 1944). They are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. His father, Lell Vester
(1868 - 1948) and mother, Lillie Mae (1869 - 1944) are also buried at Mt. Zion.
Cam attended Mt. Zion rural school for his elementary education and Bowling
Green High School one year.
On February 25, 1928, Cam was married to Katie B. Wilson at the home of her
parents near Cyrene. Their first home was on a 220-acre farm on Sulphur Creek,
three and one-half miles east of St. Clement.
Katie B. was born in 1906 in Lincoln County near Louisville to Frank and Katie
Gillum Wilson. She had three brothers and three sisters: Kirby, Quentin (Q. M.),
Mary Lillian, William and Virginia.
The family purchased and moved to the 427-acre farm (the home place of her
mother) in 1910, three and one-half miles southwest of Cyrene.
Katie attended Pleasant Grove school for two years, Buchanan High School two
years, and graduated from Bowling Green. She started her teaching career while
17 at Mt. Zion for a seven month term at $75 per month. Board and room cost
$20 per month. She also taught at Oak Grove, Prairie Mound, Pleasant Grove,
Watson, and Ashley Schools. Katie taught four years before being old enough
to vote. She acquired her college schooling mostly by extension, correspondence,
spring and summer classes, nights and on Saturdays. In the spring of 1971, Katie
retired from teaching.
The Hendersons were the parents of three sons: Frank L. (1931 - 1933); Glenn
Bryant, born 1934, and Cammie Quentin born 1944. Glenn married Patsy Capher.
They had one son, Kelly Glenn Henderson in 1964. This marriage was dissolved.
Quentin married Gladys Jane Running. A son, Christopher Quentin, was born 1973.
True to ancestral history, without a known exception, Glenn and Quentin each own
and operate farms. Each also engages in construction work.
The family moved to what is known as "The Henderson Farm" near Antioch Church
in 1938 and purchased the farm that fall.
