Lindell Paul Ellison and Ilah Helen Bone Ellison
Bolivar--A 23-year-old ministerial student and his 21-year-old wife
burned to death early today when fire destroyed their rented,
three-room frame cottage two blocks south of Bolivar’s public square.
Dead are Lindell Paul Ellison, a student at Southwest Baptist College,
and his wife, Ilah Helen.
The young couple apparently suffocated as flames raged through their
home - which they had moved into only three weeks ago - about 2 a.m.
The body of Mrs. Ellison was recovered from the smouldering debris at
dawn but Ellison’s body, found near the back door, wasn’t taken from
the structure until several hours later.
Polk County Coroner Willard B. Erwin said the fire apparently was
caused by an overheated wood-burning stove in the small residence.
He said there probably would be an inquest.
The fire was discovered about 2:10 a.m. by Luther Robertson, Bolivar
night watchman, and Fred Neuhart, a companion.
“They had smelled smoke in the south part of town for quite a while but
it was so foggy they couldn’t track it down,” Erwin said. “But they
finally spotted the smoke coming out of the house,” he added.
The two men broke in the front door of the residence and discovered the
whole interior was in flames, the coroner reported. The Bolivar fire
department was called but couldn’t control the blaze.
Ellison came to Southwest Baptist two years ago as a ministerial
student from St. Louis, Erwin said. In his spare time, the youth had
worked for college Prof. Owen Hendrix on a farm southwest of Bolivar.
The couple moved to the farm in September but came back to Bolivar
about three weeks ago.
Two weeks ago, young Ellison was named pastor at Deerfield Baptist
Church and had preached his first sermon as its minister only last
Sunday.
Ellison’s mother, Mrs. Nellie B. Ellison, is believed to be living in
Fredericktown. His wife is survived by her mother, Mrs. Kizzie Bone,
of Farmington.
The bodies were taken to the Erwin and Blue Funeral Home.

George M. Mitchell
$9300 Found On Transient
Man Stricken Here Carrying Large Sum
An investigation is underway here today to determine the identity of
a 66-year-old man, who authorities say had $9300 in cash pinned to
his underwear when he died of an apparent heart attack Thursday
night.
The man, identified only as George M. Mitchell, died at 9:30 p.m.
Thursday at Springfield Baptist Hospital where he was taken by AAA
Ambulance after he became ill while walking in the 400 block East
Walnut.
Public Administrator Henry J. Keller said that seven $1000 bills and a
number of $100 and $10 bills were found pinned on his undershirt.
The money was turned over to Keller after authorities were unable to
determine the man’s address or learn if he had any relatives. Keller
said that before he died the man gave addresses on both East and West
Walnut but that a check at the West Walnut street address revealed that
he had not lived there and that there was no number corresponding to
the one he gave on East Walnut.
In addition, Keller said, the man was carrying eight savings account
books indicating deposits totaling about $12,000 in savings firms in
Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. Keller said it was believed the man
might have come here from Indianapolis.
The body was taken to the Ralph Thieme funeral home, where fingerprints
were taken yesterday to aid in the investigation. Funeral arrangements
are incomplete pending an outcome of the investigation.
Keller said that the money will be kept in his possession for nine
months if no relatives are located. At the end of that period it will
be turned over to the state, where it will be held for 21 years pending
any claim by heirs, Keller said.
Detective Bob Lee said that a check was being made on all business
establishments and rooming houses in the Walnut street vicinity to
determine if anyone had known Mitchell. Lee said that Mitchell was
about 6 feet tall, weighed about 180 pounds and had a neat appearance.
He was wearing a suit apparently purchased in Los Angeles, Lee said.
